Tiger Stadium,Detroit,Mi.
June 17th-19th,1985

June 17th-Red Sox-2 Tigers-0
Two runs in the 4th,courtesy of a Bill Buckner solo homer and a Jim Rice RBI single were the only runs that the Sox could muster off of Tigers starter Milt Wilcox(1-5), but it proved to be enough thanks to the phenomenal pitching of Bob Ojeda(8-4) who pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 as Boston upended first place Detroit 2-0.Bob Stanley,Boston's fantastic closer earned his 14th save of the season.

June 18th-Tigers-2 Red Sox-1
In another tight low scoring ballgame,Tigers SS Alan Trammell's RBI single in the bottom of the 8th put Detroit up 2-0 heading into the 9th,but Boston battled back, getting three hits including a Jim Rice RBI single off of Tigers closer Willie Hernandez, but Willie hung in there, coaxing a Bill Buckner ground out to preserve the 2-1 Tiger victory. For Hernandez,it was his 17th save of the season,as Detroit improved to 35-27,good enough for first place in a tightening AL East race.

June 19th-Red Sox-3 Tigers-2
In the third and final game of this highly competitive well played series, the Red Sox defeated the Tigers 3-2,thanks to a 3 run first inning followed by tremendous pitching by starter Al Nipper(3-8) and relievers Steve Crawford and Bob Stanley.Nipper, pitched 7 solid innings to earn the win,and Stanley the save, his 2nd of the series and 15th of the season.

Around The League

Orioles starter Ken Dixon(6-4) had everything working on Monday, shutting out the Yankees on 2 hits in the 3-0 Baltimore victory.

In a hastily called press conference on Tuesday, the San Francisco Giants announced the trading of 33 year old 3B Joel Youngblood to the New York Mets in exchange for 41 year old 1B Rusty Staub.

The Reds Eric Davis was unstoppable Tuesday night, going 3 for 4 with 3 home runs,2 walks,8 RBI and 3 runs scored,as the Reds destroyed the Giants 15-1.

Dick Schofield's 3 run double in the top of the 8th was the final nail in the coffin,as Mike Witt(9-3) and the surging California Angels defeated the Cleveland Indians 5-3 to move into 2nd place in the AL West, just 5.5 games behind the struggling Mariners.

Good pitching once again did the Tigers in on Thursday,as the Yankees Ron Guidry(5-4) held Detroit to just 3 hits and a walk while fanning 7 in a dominating complete game 2-0 Yankee victory.

Royals Stadium,Kansas City,Mo.
June 21st-23rd,1985

June 21st-Mariners-10 Royals-6
In a vulgar display of power, the Seattle Mariners took KC pitchers over the wall 5 times, while racking up 14 hits as Seattle defeated the Royals 10-6. MLB home run leader Ken Phelps led the way for the Mariners, going 2 for 3 with 2 home runs,2 RBI and 2 runs scored.Seattle also got homers from Phil Bradley,Dave Henderson, and Ivan Calderon. On the hill, the Mariners got a serviceable game from starter Matt Young(7-4),who got the victory despite lasting just 5 and one third innings, and allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and 4 walks while striking out just 1.As for the Royals, starting pitcher Dennis Leonard(3-3) had his worst start of the year, lasting just 2 and two thirds innings, and allowing 6 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3.

June 22nd-Royals-4 Mariners-2
Royals starter Bud Black(9-6) was in total command today, going 8 full, and allowing 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 before turning the game over to closer Dan Quisenberry, who pitched a perfect 9th to earn his 10th save of the season in the Royals 4-2 victory over the Mariners.Offensively, the Royals got a boost from the bottom of their lineup, thanks to a Buddy Biancalana solo homer as well as RBI hits from Dane Iorg and Darryl Motley. For Seattle, the lone bright spot was Danny Tartabull, who had 2 hits including his 13th homer of the season.

June 23rd-Royals-8 Mariners-1
In the third and final game of the series, the Royals continued their slow march back into the pennant race, totally dominating the Mariners in a message sending 8-1 victory.Starting pitcher Bret Saberhagen(8-6) was simply overwhelming today, holding the Mariners to 1 run on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5 over 8 innings pitched.Relief man Tony Ferreira finished up,striking out the first two batters he faced, before inducing a Darnell Coles ground out to end the game.Royals CF Willie Wilson was the story offensively, going 4 for 5 with a double,a triple,2 stolen bases and 4 runs scored. For Seattle,SS Danny Tartabull was once again the lone offensive contributor, going 2 for 3 with an RBI single, while starting pitcher Mark Langston(6-7) got saddled with the loss, allowing 6 runs(5 earned) on 11 hits and 2 walks in 6 and a third innings. He also struck out 4 batters.

Around The Major Leagues

30 year old Yankees pitcher Ed Whitson(5-5) was just about perfect on Friday, going the distance while allowing just one Tiger to reach base(Bob Melvin on a 5th inning single) as the Yankees blanked faltering Detroit 5-0.Whitson's final line looked like this: 9 IP -1 H- 0 BB -3 K- 91 pitches.

The Expos Hubie Brooks was on fire on Saturday, going 4 for 5 with a double,a homer,5 RBI,and a run scored,as Montreal upended the Mets 9-5

For the first time since opening day,the Detroit Tigers do not lead the AL East.Following their 4th straight loss to the surging Yankees on Sunday, and their 5th straight loss overall the Tigers have fallen one game behind the Indians, who lead the East with a record of 38-32.

Over in the National League's Western division, the Dodgers and Reds have all but left the rest of the division in the dust, thanks to win streaks of 9 and 8 games respectively, with the Dodgers leading the way at 45-22,and the Reds just 4.5 back at 41-27.The next team closest to the perennial powers are the Atlanta Braves, who at 32-35,are a whopping 13 games out of first place.

Tigers LF Johnny Grubb has a fractured right foot,he'll be out for up to 6 weeks.

Royals LF George Bell is having problems with recurring back spasms, the team has decided to shut him down for about a month.

Due to the "Groundhog Day" effet which I fear has been plaguing this dynasty lately,I'm going a whole different way here for now on.The plan now is to give one big monthly update, with small news items updated as they happen.I know it's been a little helter-skelter here lately, but I just feel like things are very repetitive, and I'm looking to get away from that.

Indians Hargrove Lost For Season!

Cleveland Indians 1B Mike Hargrove was lost for the season today, when on a close play at 1st he came down awkwardly on the base and wound up rupturing a tendon in his right foot.If all goes well during rehab,Mike could be healed and ready to go by the first of the year.In 68 games this season,Hargrove was batting .279 with 15 doubles,2 triples,1 homer,18 RBI and 35 runs scored. He'll most likely be replaced in the lineup by Andre Thornton, who had been the team's DH up to this point.

In Other News

Buried in the lineup behind the great Mike Schmidt,Phillies backup 1B Johnny Wockenfuss has been limited to just 56 at bats this season, and because of that he's demanding to be traded."I've been patient all year, but now,I've had it.It's play me or trade me".GM Paul Owens said he would try to honor Wockenfuss's request.

June 28th-White Sox-2 Twins-1

Led by the duo of starting pitcher Floyd Bannister(9-7 3.59 ERA 108 K's) and right fielder Harold Baines(.338 16 HR 60 RBI), the Chicago White Sox have been phenomenal lately, winning 20 of their last 28 games and improving their record to 48-37,putting them in 1st place in the AL's Western Division as we head into the All-Star break.Another reason for Chicago's success has been the play of their closer Bob James, who following a rocky start, has gone 3-0 with 11 saves and more importantly 0 blown saves in his last 18 appearances.Could this be the year that the White Sox finally break the curse?
