AT ![]() Busch Stadium,St.Louis,Mo. August 2nd-5th,1985 August 2nd- Cardinals-4 Phillies-3 Thanks to RBI singles from Milt Thompson and Von Hayes,as well as an RBI ground out by Luis Aguayo, the Phillies took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning, but the Cardinals rallied, getting a leadoff single from Tommy Herr, followed by a Willie McGee walk, bringing up the red-hot Jack Clark, who wasted no time depositing a Steve Carlton(loss,6-6) fastball over the fence in left, putting St Louis ahead by the score of 4-3,and leaving them just three outs away from victory. In the 9th,Cards closer Ken Dayley(save,20) made quick work of the Phillies, with the final out coming on a Luis Aguayo ground out to short. August 3rd-Phillies-4 Cardinals-0 Phillies starter Shane Rawley(win,9-7) was judge, jury, and executioner today, thanks to a dominating performance against the St Louis Cardinals in which he allowed just 4 singles, while walking 3 and striking out 1 in a complete game 4-0 shutout victory here at Busch Stadium.much maligned 2B Juan Samuel was the hero offensively, going 2 for 3 with a home run,2 RBI and a run scored, the homer, was Samuel's 10th of the season. For the Cardinals, starting pitcher Ricky Horton(loss,4-5) pitched well in defeat, allowing 2 runs(1 earned) on 5 hits and a walk, while striking out 2 in five and a third innings pitched. August 4th-Cardinals-2 Phillies-1 For the second time in three days, the Cardinals Jack Clark came through with a clutch hit late in the ballgame to give St Louis a stunning come from behind victory.Trailing 1-0 after 7 and a half due to a dazzling performance by Phils starter Charles Hudson(loss,7-5) the Cardinals once again found their stroke late, getting back to back singles by pitcher John Tudor(win,12-7) and CF Willie McGee,putting runners on the corners with no outs.Following a visit to the mound by Phils manager John Felske, which resulted in Hudson staying in the game, and then a Willie McGee steal of 2nd.Tom Herr tied the game with an RBI ground out to short.Hudson then got Andy Van Slyke to pop-up,and now only needed to retire Jack Clark to get out of the inning still tied at 1-1.He couldn't do it.With the count 1-0,Clark ripped a double to right, scoring McGee and putting the Redbirds up 2-1 entering the 9th where once again Ken Dayley(save,21) was money, quickly retiring the heart of the Phillies lineup in order, earning his 2nd save of the series. August 5th- Cardinals-5 Phillies-4 Incredibly, for the third time in four games, the Phillies took a lead into the bottom of the 8th inning, only to come out on the other side trailing, and then ultimately losing. In today's game, the Phillies took a 4-1 lead into the 8th,where starting pitcher Tommy John allowed a one out double to Andy Van Slyke, followed by an RBI single to Tom Herr, ending John's night with the Phils ahead 4-2.Phils closer Steve Bedrosian(loss,3-3) entered the game next, getting Willie McGee to fly out before allowing a Jack Clark single to put runners on the corners with two outs for catcher Darrell Porter who crushed a 2-1 slider, sending it over the wall in straight-away center field, unbelievably putting St Louis ahead 5-4 as we entered the 9th.Once there,it was all Ken Dayley(save,22),who once again mowed the Phillies down in order, getting Garry Maddox on strikes to end the game, with the Cards in front 5-4.Earning the win for St Louis, was starter Danny Cox(win,7-8) who pitched 8 strong innings, allowing 4 runs(2 earned) on 8 hits, with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Dodgers 3B Pedro Guerrero continued his push for League MVP on Sunday, going 4 for 4 with 3 homers,5 RBI and 3 runs scored,in LA's 10-4 trouncing of fading Cincinnati. For the season,Guerrero is batting a healthy .323,with 25 home runs,70 RBI and 64 runs scored,He's also stolen 13 bases, has an OBP of .403 and a slugging percentage of .562 Mariners third sacker Jim Presley was on fire on Monday! you know I didn't even think about the possibility of that, and although a lot of things need to go right, the possibility is there. In the NL,the Mets and Dodgers have pretty much ruled the roost for most of the season, and although it's still too early to rule anyone out,it seems pretty clear that the only teams with a chance to overtake either team are St Louis,Cincinnati and maybe Atlanta. In the AL East,Detroit and Milwaukee have been killed by injuries, which has allowed the Red Sox and Yankees to start to pull away.In the West,Seattle,Texas,Chicago, and Minnesota have all had some time at the top,but look out.The Royals have finally started to play ball, and look primed to make a run.

August 10th- Cubs 6 Mets-3 Thanks to another brilliant performance by starting pitcher Dennis Eckersley(win,15-5), who pitched 8 spectacular innings, allowing 3 runs(1 earned) on 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6,the Chicago Cubs found a way to win at Shea, defeating the mighty New York Mets and their ace Dwight Gooden(loss,11-6) 6-3.The Cubs struck first in this one, when in the top of the 3rd with two outs, sppeedy Rob Dernier legged out an infield single, bringing up boppers Ryne Sandberg and Leon Durham, who hit back to back doubles, making it 2-0 Cubs after 3.The Mets would tie the game at 2-2 in the 5th,on a Wally Backman RBI sac fly, followed by a clutch RBI single by 1B Keith Hernandez. The game would remain tied at 2 until the 7th,where Eckersley himself would take Gooden deep on a two run shot to center, putting Chicago ahead by the score of 4-2.In the 8th,the Cubs would tack on two more,on an RBI sac fly by Leon Durham followed by a throwing error on the Mets Ray Knight, which allowed Ryne Sandberg to score from 2nd,making it 6-2 Cubbies after 7 and a half. The Mets would get a little closer in the bottom of the inning, when Darryl Strawberry launched his 22nd homer of the year over the wall in right, but it was too little too late,as Lee Smith came on in the 9th,racking up his 26th save of the season in 1-2-3 fashion, preserving the Cubs 6-3 victory. August 11th-Cubs-4 Mets-1 On the heels of Saturday's much needed victory, the Chicago Cubs found a way to stay within striking distance of the Mets, defeating them on Sunday by the score of 4-1,to move back into 3rd place in the NL East,9.5 games out of first.Trailing 1-0 as they entered the 4th,the Cubs got to Mets starter Bruce Berenyi(loss8-6),scoring 4 runs on 3 hits,2 walks and an error on 3B Ron Gardenhire, the key hit being a two run single by pitcher Steve Trout.Speaking of Trout(win,7-9),besides his exploits with the bat,he also pitched a whale of a ballgame, holding the Mets to just 1 run over 8 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3,earning his 7th victory of the season.Getting the save, once again was closer Lee Smith(save,27), who for the second straight day retired the Mets in order in the 9th.
