1985 And Beyond-An MLB Dynasty

The year is 1985, the Detroit Tigers are the defending world champions, Rod Carew, and Rollie Fingers are on the verge of ending their big league careers, Jose Canseco, Ozzie Guillen, and Vince Coleman are just beginning theirs, Tom Seaver is on the verge of 300 career wins, and Pete Rose is about to do the unthinkable, break Ty Cobb's career hit mark of 4,189. Heading into this season, Pete needs just 95 hits to break the record which has stood since Cobb's retirement On September 11th 1928. In this dynasty, you'll get to relive this historic season on a day by day basis, all the while watching as this season unfolds. Will the Tigers repeat? Will Pete break the record? Will the Royals, baseball's bridesmaids finally break through and win the big one, or will someone else come from out of nowhere to capture the World Series crown?

LCS Goes From Five To Seven Game Series

New York,NY-Since the switch to divisional play in 1969, the League Championship Series between each league's respective division champions has always been a five game series. Beginning this year though, that will all change and the LCS will move to a seven game series format, identical to the World Series.

The Rules

1. I will be playing as the Phillies, but as stated earlier, this is more of a leaguewide Dynasty.

2.Trading was off until the day before opening day then turned on.I wanted teams to start the season with the same lineups they did in real life.

3.Free Agency/Arbitration is the same as in real life,3 years for arbitration, 6 years for free agency.

4.I'll be using 3 year recalc, with players retiring according to history.

5.New players will enter the league with the team they broke in with.

6.Injuries are on low, fatigue on high.

7.Coaches and scouts are on as is financials.Suspensions and drug suspensions are also enabled.

8.Trading is set to Low/Hard/Neutral

9.All teams have 5 man rotations with start highest rested enabled.

10.Thats about it,Next up Opening Day!

Hershiser Magnificent In 2-1 Dodgers Win

Houston,Tx.-Astros starter Nolan Ryan(0-1) allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits over 8 innings pitched, but it still wasn't enough to beat the Dodgers thanks to a sparkling performance by pitcher Orel Hershiser(1-0) who went 8 shutout innings, allowing just 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Closer Tom Niedenfuer allowed 2 hits and a run in the 9th but hung on to get the save.

In Other National League Games

Von Hayes had a pair of RBI singles and Mike Schmidt added a two run homer to give Phillies starter John Denny(1-0) more than enough support in the Phils 4-0 victory over Atlanta.

Deadlocked at 0-0 entering the 11th,the Mets self destructed, allowing Tommy Herr to score on a Jesse Orosco wild pitch and then Jack Clark on an error by Keith Hernandez off the bat of Darrell Porter as the Cardinals hung on to defeat New York 2-0.St Louis starter John Tudor pitched 9 innings of shutout ball, while the Mets Dwight Gooden blanked the Cards for 7 and a third, neither pitcher was involved in the decision.

Cubs starter Dennis Eckersley allowed just 1 run on 9 hits over 7 and two thirds innings as the Cubs defeated the Pirates 5-2.Davey Lopes and Shawn Dunston each had two doubles and an RBI for Chicago.

An RBI double by Chris Brown followed by RBI singles by Chili Davis, Bob Brenly, and Bill Wellmeyer in the bottom of the first inning gave Giants starting pitcher Atlee Hammaker(1-0) all that he would need as San Francisco upended visiting San Diego 4-2. Hammaker allowed 2 runs on 3 hits to get the win, Dave Dravecky(0-1) took the loss.

In The American League

Charlie Moore's RBI double in the bottom of the 5th was the only run of the game, as the Milwaukee Brewers behind 8 and a third shutout innings by Teddy Higuera(1-0) defeated Tom Seaver(0-1) and the White Sox 1-0. Rollie Fingers collected the save.

Bob Kearney and Ken Phelps each had a homer and 3 RBI, while SS Spike Owen added 3 hits and 3 RBI of his own as Seattle destroyed Oakland 10-3. Starting pitcher Matt Young(1-0) got the win for Seattle while veteran Don Sutton took the loss.

Juan Beniquez's solo homer in the bottom of the 1st quickly gave the Angels a 1-0 lead on the Twins, but a 7th inning homer by Randy Bush tied it and eventually sent the game to extra innings where the Twins would win the ballgame 2-1 on a Greg Gagne two out RBI double that scored Steve Lombardozzi.

1985 is a great choice in my opinion. It's nice to already see some of my favorite players pop-up - Mattingly, Puckett, Viola, and Hershiser.

Yeah, once I knew that my last dynasty was done,I immediately made a decision to move back into my generation of baseball(1977-present) once I did that,it was just a matter of choosing a season. I chose 1985 because first of all,the Phillies were ready to drop into oblivion for pretty much 19 of the next 20 years.Secondly, all four divisional races were close in 85, with no team winning their division by more than 5.5 games.Add in Pete's race to Cobb and the decision was made.

Mattingly's RBI Single In 10th Sinks White Sox 6-5
Yankee Stadium,Bronx,NY-After falling behind 3-0 early, the yankees stormed back, getting a two run homer by Ken Griffey as well as RBI hits from Rickey Henderson, Andre Robertson and an RBI ground out by Willie Randolph to take a 5-3 lead into the 9th where normally reliable closer Dave Righetti could not hold the lead, giving up a two run triple to Ozzie Guillen tying the game at 5-5 and sending it to extra innings where Yankee 1B Don Mattingly won the game in dramatic fashion, with a bases loaded RBI single giving the Yankees the 6-5 victory. Dave Righetti(1-0) rebounded nicely to get the win, while Chicago's Bob James(0-2) took the loss.

In a beautifully played pitcher's duel, Red Sox RF Mike Greenwell's 2 run homer in the top of the 2nd wound up the only runs of the game as Boston shut out the Royals 2-0 thanks to a tremendous pitching performance by Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd(2-1) who allowed 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7 over 8 and two thirds scoreless innings toi earn his second win of the season. Bob Stanley collected the save, his 3rd. Brett Saberhagen(2-1) took the loss for Kansas City.

As per your usual dynasties - I will be reading. I love this era and if I ever did another dynasty - this would be it.

Maybe in this win the Tribe can win a few....

Ok, maybe not.
