Washington SP Wins Rookie Award

October 16, 1876

SP Curt Young


The #1 overall selection in the 1874 draft made a big splash in the ABC this year. Young won 16 of his 38 starts, compiling a 2.27 ERA to win this year's Rookie of the Year award.

Baltimore's Moore Named ABC Best Batter

The ABC's Free Agency period began today with some big names becoming available this year.

SP Greg Berry

Berry was the ABC Rookie of the Year in 1872 and Pitcher of the Year this past year.

LF Cy Clark

Clark was the Gold Glove winning LF this past season.

RF Bill Gibbs

Gibbs is a 3-time Batter of the Year winner. He has a lifetime batting average of .352.

Ferrell Becomes ABC Highest Paid

December 16, 1876

CF Joshua Ferrell signed a landmark deal with the Nationals today. His 7-year, $14,198 contract makes him the highest paid player in the ABC with an average annual salary of $1,827.

FBA Holds Inaugural Draft

February 7, 1877

The FBA league ownership got together today to hold their Inauguration Draft. FBA league tryouts started on February 1, with the draft being held today after all of the teams got a good look at all of the players. The draft order was selected at random and here's how the first round selections played out.

Evans First To Defect From ABC

February 11, 1877

It didn't take long before the FBA signed its first free agent from the ABC. SP Kris Evans is the first player to leave the ABC and sign with a team in the FBA. Evans started 42 games last year for the Philadelphia Keystones. He won 18 games with an 1.85 ERA. He signed a 4-year contract worth $3,536 with the Cleveland Blues.

ABC Announces 1877 Season Schedule

March 11, 1877

The ABC 1877 season will again be 84 games this season. The season will begin on Friday April 6.

Here are the Opening Day match ups:

The Cincinnati Reds and Red Bishop will open the season on the road in Baltimore against the Orioles and Rick Sawyer.

Newly signed Superba Greg Berry gets the nod against Walton Webster and the defending champion Chicago White Stockings.

versus

Ralph MacDonald and the Keystones will travel to Boston to face off against the Red Stockings and Antonio Martinez

versus

Finally, we have ace Jonathan Starr starting off the season at home against the Curt Young and the Nationals.

FBA Inaugural Season Starts April 2

March 17, 1877

The FBA announced today that they will begin their season on April 2, 4 days before the ABC gets started. Like the ABC, they will play an 84 game season.

Here is the FBA's Opening Day match ups:

The Philadelphia Athletics begin their season on the road against the Louisville Colonels. SP Adam Blankinship takes the mound for the Athletics against Kent Weber for the Colonels.

versus

Sam Epley and the Brown Stockings travel to New York to take on the Giants and Aaron Krause.

versus

Eugene Porter leads his Milwaukee Brewers into Pittsburgh to take on Jesus Ruiz and the Pirates.

versus

Cleveland sends Eli Anderson and his Blues team mates into Columbus to take on the Buckeyes led by Justin Souders.

versus

Baseball America's Top 10 ABC Prospects

April 1, 1877

Today, Baseball America released their Top 100 Prospects list for the American Baseball Congress. There are 7 players on the list this year after making the list last year.

1. SP Adrian Miranda - Baltimore Orioles
Adrian moves up from 2nd on last year's list to take the top spot in 1877, his second year on the list.


2. SP Jimmy Wilson - Brooklyn Superbas
After being #3 on the list in 1876, Jimmy Wilson moves up a spot to #2 in 1877.


3. SP Mark Pittman - Philadephia Keystones
Pittman makes the list for the 5th year in a row after being draft #1 overall in 1872.


4. SP Ricky Armstrong - Brooklyn Superbas
Armstrong is the second Brooklyn player to make the list. 1877 is his 3rd year on the list.


5. SP Zack Ammerman - Cincinnati Reds
Ammerman jumps 3 spots to #5 in 1877, his 2nd year on the list.


6. MR Brandon House - Brooklyn Superbas
After being drafted 28th overall in 1872, House was named the #99 prospect in the ABC. This year, he is #6 after being #9 last year.


7. SP Alfredo Zamora - Philadelphia Keystones
Zamora was the #10 prospect last year. This year, he is upgraded to #7.


8. MR Jimmy Douglas - Brooklyn Superbas
Douglas is the 4th Brooklyn player on the list this year. After dropping out of the Top 10 to be #11 last year, he jumps up to 8th this year.


9. LF Garland Henty - Boston Red Stockings
Henty is the only non-pitcher in the top 10 this year. He is listed in the 9th spots after being 12th last year.


10. SP Ben Morgan - Washington Nationals
Morgan was drafted 5th overall in 1875. This is his first year in the Top 10.

1877 Baseball America FBA Top Prospects


Baseball America's Top 10 FBA Prospects

April 1, 1877
Baseball America announced the Top 10 Prospects in the FBA today. Just like the ABC, the FBA list is dominated by pitchers. There are 8 on the list with only 2 batters.

1. MR Elwood Barnes - New York Giants
New York's Elwood Barnes is the first #1 prospect in FBA history. He was drafted with the 8th pick in the 2nd round, 16th overall in the FBA Inaugural Draft.


2. CL Chris Taylor - New York Giants
After being selected 64th overall by the Giants, Baseball America has named Chris Taylor as the #2 prospect in the FBA.


3. MR Mike Owens - Cleveland Blues
Baseball America names Mike Owens as the #3 prospect in the FBA. He was drafted in the 7 round by the Blues.


4. SP Trevor Peters - Columbus Buckeyes
This 16th round draft pick has been named the FBA's #4 prospect.


5. SP Scott Hooper - New York Giants
The New York Giants get their 3rd prospect in the top 5 with Hooper. The Giants selected him 128th overall back in February.


6. MR Ryan McKay - Louisville Colonels
Good news for Louisville and their young prospect, Ryan McKay. Baseball America named him the #6 prospect in the league.


7. SS Jeffery Jackson - Louisville Colonels
The first position player, another Louisville Colonel, comes in ranked #7. Jackson was drafted 11th overall in the Inaugural Draft.


8. LF Devin Brown - Cleveland Blues
The second Cleveland players lands on the list at #8. This 24 year old should lead the Blues for many years to come.


9. SP Antonio Rodriguez - New York Giants
The New York Giants continue their dominance of this year list with SP Antonio Rodriguez. He was selected with the 161st pick over all.


10. SP Vic Barnard - Louisville Colonels
Barnard is the 3rd player to represent the Louisville franchise on the list. The 134th draftee is this year's #10 prospect.
