FBA Gets Things Underway, Porter Shines

April 2, 1877

The Milwaukee Brewers got their inaugural FBA season off to an amazing start with a 2-hit shutout over the Pittsburgh Pirates. SP Eugene Porter led the Brewers by pitching a complete game while only allowing 2 hits. 2B Joey Chapman helped the Brewers' cause with a 3 for 4 effort, scoring 3 runs and scoring once.

New York Giants - 0

St. Louis Brown Stockings
SP Sam Epley

The Brown Stockings defeated the Giants 6 to 0 after Sam Epley allowed only 4 hits in 9 IP.

With 2 outs in the top of the 5th inning, Merizalde hit a 2 run homerun to be the first player in FBA history to hit a homerun.

Baltimore's Sawyer got his 1877 campaign off to a terrific start, throwing 9 innings and not allowing any earned runs.

SP Greg Berry won Player of the Game honors for the Superbas. He allowed 7 hits of 9 IP, strikeout 6. The 3 runs scored by Chicago were all unearned.

New York Starting Off Fast!

The New York Mutuals came into the 1877 season ready to play. They're 11-1 after the first month of the season.

SP Jonathan Starr - New York Mutuals

Starr was selected as the Pitcher of the Month after winning all 6 of his starts in April. He has pitched 54 innings, allowing just 1 earned run while striking out 14 batters.

Batter of the Month
OF Bill Gibbs - Philadelphia Keystones

Bill Gibbs earns BotM honors after going 17 for 51 with 1 HR, 6 RBI, and 12 runs scored in April. This is his 4th time winning the BotM award.

Rookie of the Month
P Jason Beauregard - Cincinnati Reds

Rookie pitcher Jason Beauregard has started 4 games for the Reds this year. He has won 3 of those starts behind 40 IP, 5 ER and an ERA of 1.13.

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Eugene Porter had a flawless month to lead his team to the top of the FBA after 14 games.

Pittsburgh and New York Agreed to First Ever FBA Trade

May 8, 1877

In the first trade to ever take place in the FBA, the Pittsburgh Pirates send 1B Carl McGowan to the New York Giants for MR Jonathan Cureton and SS Juan Garcia.
