The year of the Tomahawks. A 1921 Chronicle of Detroit
Take it easy on me this is my first entry into the dynasty reports. This is a story about the coming season of the 1921 Detroit Tomahawks of the Golden Baseball League(not very original, but I like the logo.)
The GBL consists of an American and National League. Each league has four divisions with six teams in each division. Only division winners make it to the playoffs which has three rounds Regional(best of 5), Divisional(best of 7), Golden League Championship(Best of 7). It has an unbalanced schedule of 162 games with no interleague play. Detroit plays in the National League Midwest Division. The last time we saw the Detroit Tomahawks, they were watching the Staten Island Sunsets celebrate at the Detroit Grounds as they lost game 7 of the Divisional series by the score of 4-3. A season of unexpected success came to a sudden halt for a team who had never reached this level before. In the 18 years of the GBL, the closest Detroit was to the playoffs was in 1905 when they finished second 3 games out of first. In the next fourteen years they played in the middle or the bottom of the pack. In 1917 they finished in second 5 games behind the Jacksonville Knickerbockers. 1920 was a year of changes. New GM Jackson Denalli brought in manager Gerardo Rodriguez to take the reigns of Detroit. He guided the Tomahawks to their first National League Midwest Divison title and their first playoff birth finishing 91-71. Denalli retooled the entire organization. Ushering in new uniforms and logo for the Tomahawks there was great success in the minor leagues. The (AAA) Pocatello Nails finished 76-54 losing in the first round of the playoffs, (AA) Santa Fe Mauraders 75-45 won the Federal league championship, and the Daytona Beach Skychiefs finished a respectable 69-51 missing the playoffs by 2 games. 1920 is now over and a new season is coming. Expectations are high for the Tomahawks and it is time to show if 1920 was a fluke, or sign that they have turned a corner and ready to contend for the Golden League Championship in 1921. We will pick up this story in the pre-season of 1921. To be continued....
