1992 Boston Red Sox

I tired to stay involved with my fictional dynasty, but I always get drawn back to reality. So with that in mind, I have decided to try my hand at reviving the worst Red Sox team of my lifetime, the 1993 Red Sox. The '92 team finished 73-89, last in the AL East. The team had a barren minor league system, although there was some young talent with the big club in 1B Mo Vaughn (.234 15-57), SS John Valentin (.276 5-25), and SP Aaron Sele.

Below is the Opening Day Roster:

We made a couple of deals as Spring Training came to an end...First a complicated trade, that included three teams. First we traded CF Bob Zupcic to the expansion Colorado Rockies in exchange for Alex Cole. Zupcic hit .276 3-43 in his only full season for the Red Sox, while Cole hit .255 0-16 between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Once that deal was consumated, we shipped Cole off the to the Florida Marlins, along with OF Ivan Calderon and a minor leaguer for CF Chuck Carr. Carr will provide us with stellar centerfield defense and speed at the bottom of the order. He hit just .219 last year, but stole 10 bases in only 22 games for the St. Louis Cardinals before being drafted in the expansion draft by the Marlins.

The second deal was a bit more significant as we sent SP Joe Hesketh to the Cleveland Indians for two minor leaguers, RP Julian Tavarez and superstar in waiting RF Manny Ramirez. Hesketh was 8-9 with a 4.36 ERA and one save in 30 games last year, 25 starts for the Red Sox. He struck out 104 and walked 58 in 148 2/3 IP. Tavarez will be assigned to AAA, while Ramirez will start the season in AA, but is expected to be in Fenway Park as early as later this year.

Awesome.I like you cannot stay away from the historical stuff.I just find it much more immersive than the fictional game. The early 90's,although the beginning of the steroid era(especially in Oakland and Texas) was a really fun time in baseball history, there was no real dominant team then(maybe Toronto?),so from year to year,it was up in the air who was going to come out on top.Good luck, and I'll be following.

This looks good. Historial play is very fun. May I ask what roster set you're using? 1993 was the first of 14 straight losing seasons for my beloved Brewers, and I have been looking to start a dynasty with them.

Long Island's own Frank Viola! Good luck. At some point, I will do a historical Mets dynasty...I love this stuff.

Jay: I am just using default historical rosters............
Phillie: It has been a tough stretch, my pitching has been unreliable and I can't hit all of a sudden
EM: I am going to stick with the 22 year old Sele, trial by fire sort of thing, but if we are out of it in July, Viola is one of my few trading chips, so he could be gone, along with most of the bullpen.

Did Tettleton get traded or do you have duplicates in your league? I see him on both Texas and Detroit.

Trade News:

-A big trade out of Boston today as the Red Sox weakened themselves for the near future, but strengthened themselves in the future as they send 2B Scott Fletcher, RP Jeff Russell, 1B Carlos Quintana and $800,000 to the Atlanta Braves for 21 year old LF Ryan Klesko and 22 year old C Javy Lopez. It was alot to give up, but we are now looking at sluggers Manny Ramirez and Klesko manning the corner outfield spots in Fenway for years to come while Lopex shores up the catching situation starting in '94. Klesko was hitting .270 with two homeruns at the time of the deal and will be assigned to AA, while Lopez was hitting .308 2-16 and will also be with AA Le Roy.
