1909 - Year In Review
The year was a year of firsts. In the National League the Cincinnati Reds, one of the oldest franchises still in operation, finally had a team that jumped to a contending status as they vaulted into first place for the first time this century at the beginning of June. The Reds then had to fight off the still mighty Pittsburgh Pirates as Cincinnati clinched their first pennant, post-1900, with a week remaining and in the process became the first team to win more than 100 games, finishing with a 101-53 record. Dick Hoblitzel led the way for the offense as he batted .337 with 5 home runs and driving in a major league leading 101 runs. The mound staff was led by Bob Ewing, the winningest pitcher in the majors (28) and the NL's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner. The Pirates finished in second place, 6 games behind, with the NL's Outstanding Hitter Award winner, Honus Wagner (.335-2-72, 53 SB) leading the lineup and Babe Adams (23-9, 2.41 ERA), the league's Rookie of Year Award winner, leading the pitching staff despite his being traded during the year by the Cardinals to the Pirates mid-season. The other yearly contender, St.Louis, finished in third place, 16 games behind the front-running Reds, thanks to the hitting of Ed Konetchy (.271-2-67) and Red Murray (.262-4-72, 54 SB) and 20-game winners Rube Waddell (21) and Slim Sallee (20).
The American League also saw a first as the Philadelphia Athletics also took the lead at the beginning of June then held off the Boston Red Sox in winning their first AL title. The Athletics were led by the bats of Eddie Collins (.336) and Frank Baker (96 RBI) plus the arms of Harry Krause (211 Ks) and Chief Bender (AL leading 25 wins), the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner. The Boston Red Sox ended up in second place, 6 games behind, were led at the plate by Doc Gessler (.309-1-76) and Tris Speaker (.299-4-81) and on the mound by Smokey Joe Wood (23 wins, 215 Ks). The Chicago White Sox finished in third place, 15 games behind, with the help of Fred Clarke (.273-2-60) and the arms of Big Ed Walsh (2.03 ERA, 19 wins) and Eddie Plank (22 wins, 1.97 ERA). Detroit's Ty Cobb showed that his winning the AL's first Triple Crown was not a fluke as he did it again in 1909 by batting .359 with 11 home runs and driving in 97 runs. Not to be left behind in firsts, the World Series had a first of its own. The Philadelphia Athletics became the first team to win the series after trailing 3 games to 1 as they won game 7 by a score of 4-2 thanks to a 2-run pinch hit home run by Al Orth, who played the outfield this year after years of pitching. A week after his World Series winning round tripper, Al Orth announced his retirement and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Code:

This game never fails to amaze me. Al Orth, a pitcher for most of his career, rides out the string as a backup fielder, gets a chance to pinch hit in the 9th inning of the 7th game of the World Series. What does he do? Slam a game and series winning homer, giving the A's their first World Series title. Following that he circles the bases for the final tim in his career, as he retires into the sunset. Good Stuff.

Definitely a good purchase. You will notice the difference between the games, X is a much better product than 9. BTW, I was away for a few days so I didn't get to start my 1950 Phillies dynasty, it should get rolling tonight.

1910 - Year In Review
U.S.President William H. Taft opened the 1910 baseball season by throwing out the first ball. His actions served to mark baseball as the "official" national pastime. The people in attendence, including Vice President James Sherman, saw Senators' pitcher Walter Johnson beat the defending AL champion Philadelphia Athletics. It was an aberation, however, as the Senators had trouble winning the rest of the way and ended in a tie for fifth place, 17 games behind. Philadelphia recovered from the loss but despite the effort of Triple Crown winning, as well as AL Outstanding Hitter Award winning, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (.377-8-106), the Athletics couldn't get any closer than 4.5 games and wound up in fourth place, 9 games back. Three-time champion Detroit took off from start to finish as they held a 3.5 game lead over the Boston Red Sox on Labor Day and clinched their 4th pennant with a half-week remaining. The Tigers were again led at the plate by Ty Cobb (.350 BA, 94 RBI, 54 SB) and on the mound by Eddie Cicotte (21 wins). The Boston Red Sox finished the season 7 games behind the Tigers thanks to the strong pitching of "Smokey" Joe Wood (AL leading 23 wins & 236 strikeouts), the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner. The New York Yankees ended up in third place thanks to the arm of pitcher Russ Ford (2.59 ERA, 2nd in AL).
After a two-year absence, the Pittsburgh Pirates returned to the top of the National League standings as they completely dominated the league, clinching the pennant with two weeks remaining, as they finished 15 games ahead and won a record 103 games. Pittsburgh was led at the plate by the NL's Outstanding Hitter Award winner, Honus Wagner (.327-6-77) and on the mound by Nick Maddox (2.18 ERA) and Howie Camnitz (NL leading 23 wins). The Chicago Cubs finished in second place, 15 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Vin Campbell (NL leading .332 BA) and the NL Rookie of the Year Award winner, Doc Miller (.300-4-89) plus the pitching of Rip Hagerman (MLB leading 1.89 ERA) and Frank Smith (20-10, 2.51 ERA, 144 strikeouts), who was awarded the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher Award. The New York Giants ended in third place, 19 games behind, thanks to the effort at the plate by Larry Doyle (NL leading 9 HR & 105 RBI) and the arm of Louis Drucke (21 wins, 194 strikeouts). The World Series marked the first meeting of two of the Major League's best hitters, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner, as it opened at Forbes Field. Detroit won the opening game, 5-1, behind the pitching of Ed Summers, then the Pirates took control as they swept the next four games to win the world's championship, four games to one. During the series, Ty Cobb bested Honus Wagner as he batted .454 to Wagner's .188. Code:
