A "Whatif" history of modern baseball, 1901-2000+ (i hope) take #?
The story behind the what if scenario:
"After a bitter contract dispute with Giants' owner Andrew Freedman, Rusie responded by publicly thumbing his nose at Mr. Freeman, which was the 19th century variant of the middle finger. He was fined $200 (he made only $2,500). Rusie refused to play until Freedman returned his money and ended up holding out for the entire 1896 season. It was a fiasco for baseball; fans boycotted and the press railed against the owners. Owners implored Rusie and Freedman to compromise; neither would budge. The holdout was finally settled just prior to the 1897 season, as the owners collaborated for recoupment of the garnished wages, as well as a $5,000 settlement. This was partially out of respect for Mr. Rusie. However, the primary motivator was the threat of legal action against the reserve clause had his case gone to court."**** (****NOTE: Taken from Wikipedia.com) What if the trial went to court and the reserve clause was abolished because Amos Rusie won his case against the Andrew Freedman??? That is the scenario for this walk, or run, through baseball history. The year is 1901 and a new era in baseball has begun. Free agency is among us as the reserve clause was abolished thanks to the court case won by Amos Rusie against New York Giants' owner Andrew Freedman and the rest of the National League. Incoming Players All incoming players will be placed on their origional teams to represent them coming up through the team's farm system. All current rules for arbitration and free agency will be in effect after that. Rule 5 Draft A Rule 5 draft will be held for those seasons in which there are players that qualify. Team Changes All team changes will be noted. Playing of Games and Trades All games will be simmed. The CPU is in charge of all of the teams and the trades will be made by it and reported. Player Accolades All important player milestones and awards will be reported. Hall Of Fame The exceptional players will be inducted into the Hall of Fame immediately upon their retirement. The criteria for entering the Hall of Fame is as follows: Hitters: 3000 hits or 350 HR or 2000 hits plus a .300 average Pitchers: 300 wins or 350 saves or 200 wins plus a 3.50 or lower ERA Both: 750 VORP Minor Leagues All teams will have a reserve roster rather than minor league teams at different levels. (Since my origional one was destroyed, I decided to start over and try again but with the players coming in on their origional teams.) If a player comes up that you might want to have their stats followed, please let me know. Last edited by captaincarl; 02-21-2010 at 09:47 AM. |

In the beginning
In 1901, Ban Johnson, with the consent of the team owners, withdrew from the National Agreement and announced plans to operate independently as a second major league. The National League owners welcomed their rivals, the American League, with open arms after an agreement has been reached between the leaders of each league. They will abide by all rules and regulations, including the new free agency rules as brought about by the Rusie case. Here are the list of the teams:
Baltimore Orioles Boston Americans Chicago White Stockings Cleveland Blues Detroit Tigers Milwaukee Brewers Philadelphia Athletics Washington Senators |

Sounds like an interesting concept! I'll be interested to see what Babe Ruth gets when he becomes eligible for free agency. Or maybe he'll never have to test the market and sign with his teams before that point.

1901 - Year in Review
When the American League's first season opened, each team found itself stocked with talent from the other league. Probably the brightest star this first year was Nap Lajoie, second sacker for the Philadelphia Athletics, who finished second in the AL in average after jumping over from the rival Phillies. In addition to his hitting .342, Lajoie also drove in 100 runs and hit 10 home runs to capture the league's Outstanding Hitter Award. However, this was not enough to carry Philadelphia into contention for the AL title as they were a distant sixth, finishing 33 games behind the title winning Boston Americans. The Americans took over first place on July 1 and never looked back as they won by 8 games over the second placed Baltimore Orioles. Boston was led by the arm of Cy Young, who won 22 games as well as recorded an AL-leading 2.08 ERA and was second in strikeouts (147) to nab the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award. The Orioles were led by Mike "Turkey" Donlin, who batted .331 to go along with 12 home runs and 73 stolen bases.
While the upstart American League was playing its first major league schedule, the National League finished its 25th season. The New York Giants attained first place with less than ten games to go after trailing by as many as 12 games then held off the Phillies, Pirates and Cardinals up to and including the final game of the season to capture the NL pennant. The Giants were led at the plate by George Van Haltren (.334) and Charlie Hickman (NL leading 14 home runs and 96 RBIs), and on the mound by Christy Mathewson (22 wins, 2.36 ERA, 212 strikeouts). The second-place Phillies were hurt by the defection of Lajoie but still packed dynamite in the bat of Ed Delahanty (NL leading .342 average, 91 RBIs) and led by the arm of Bill Duggleby (22 wins, MLB leading 2.03 ERA). Pittsburgh ended the season in third place and were led by the bat of Tommy Leach (11 home runs) and the arm of NL Outstanding Award winner Rube Waddell (MLB leading 25 wins and 251 strikeouts). Wow,Slidin' Billy Hamilton get the ol' snub huh, despite having a .343 career average and 936 stolen bases(by far the most in history) This is an outrage!!!! LOL.Ok now that I'm off the soap box, what a way to celebrate your 25th season!!! the National league may never see a race so tight again..4 teams within 2 games of 1st place??? that's unreal. As for the world's series,I'm guessing 1903? then 1905...

The Hall of Fame election committee is meeting this summer to see if it should adjust the criteria for induction. They will then take another look at "Sliding Billy" to see if he meets the new criteria.
It was a surprise to see the race that close considering in real life, Pittsburgh won by 7.5 over your Phillies and 8.5 over Brooklyn. The Giants finished 37 games behind in real life, so it was quite a jump for them. I figure that I would allow MLB to play without a championship series between the two leagues so that the AL could "get their feet wet". You were right in your testings that the trades were very low during this time but there were a ton of "purchases", which would be the "trading" of a player for financial considerations. I'm thinking of raising the trading frequency to "simulate" this. Last edited by captaincarl; 01-24-2010 at 10:06 AM. |

1902 - Year in Review
The defending AL champions, the Boston Americans, looked to repeat and held a 1 game lead over the Chicago White Sox at the beginning of June. Chicago, however, had other plans and overtook Boston by the beginning of July and quickly extended the lead to 6.5 games. The Americans were able to pull to within 2.5 games by Labor Day but the White Sox pulled away and clinched the title with almost a full week to go. Chicago was led by the powerful bats of Mike Grady (13 HR), who they had acquired in a trade in June, Dave Brain, who had an AL record 14 triples and Herm McFarland, who batted .328 with 4 home runs and 63 RBI and was awarded the league's Outstanding Hitter Award. The mound staff featured a pair of 20-game winners, John Skopec (AL leading 23) and Clark Griffith (20). The powerful bat of Buck Freeman (11 HR) and the pitching of Cy Young (19 wins, AL leading 138 strikeouts) led the way for the Americans to finish in second place, 6 games behind. The Detroit Tigers ended the season in third place, 7 games back, thanks to the arms of Roscoe Miller (2.48 ERA) and George Mullin (136 strikeouts).
The race for the pennant in the senior circuit was certainly not as closely faught as the previous campaign. The Philadelphia Phillies, led by bats of Elmer Flick (.338 avg) and Ed Delahanty (8 HR) and the arm of ace starter Al Orth (21 wins, 2.30 ERA), took the lead at the opening bell and never looked back as they cruised to the title with an 8 game edge over the Chicago Orphans and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Orphans were led by the bats of Danny Green (.339 avg, 2nd in NL) and Topsy Hartsel (82 RBI, MLB leading 52 stolen bases) and the arm of Jack Taylor (MLB leading 25 wins, 2.25 ERA). Pittsburgh ended in the tie for second place thanks to the arms of NL Outstanding Pitcher Award winner Rube Waddell (21 wins, 1.47 ERA, 244 strikeouts) and Deacon Phillippe (21 wins). The National League also featured MLB's first hitting Triple Crown winner. Nap Lajoie, a free agent pickup by Brooklyn, led the senior circuit in average (.360), home runs (9), and tied for the league lead in runs batted in (84). Code:

Hey hey what do ya say!!! Billy Hamilton makes the hall! The HOF is such a subjective thing, and many of the guys in there IRL don't deserve it.It is fun to banter about tho..

Even though I've dropped the hits down to 2000, the player still has to hit a high average to be considered. The dropping of the number of wins will help some of today's pitchers, with 5-man strict rotations, a chance to get in. This allows pitchers like Bert Blyleven, Jack Morris and Luis Tiant the ability to get into the HOF because they deserve it. (Yes, El Tiante deserves to be in, especially if Jim Hunter and Don Drysdale are in!)
