The CHICAGO CUBS- a complete history

I am starting a new thread as a life long Chicago Cubs fan. Obviously real history has been less then kind to the organization, so if we could just do it all over again maybe we could become the Yankees or something.

This opening post will provide ongoing updates for the records of my baseball season, it will be updated at the end of each season and can be an easy refrence at the start of the thread.

BARNSTORMING ENDS; WHITE STOCKINGS GO PROFESSIONAL

January 1, 1871

After weeks of deliberation, a group of owners of national baseball clubs met together in Chicago in hopes of making the all important step of creating a National League.

The tentative agreement is for 8 teams to begin play this spring with hosts cities including: Baltimore, St. Louis, Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Boston, Cincinnati and Brooklyn.

The stumbling block for the past many months had been the negotiation of the Chicago White Stocking team and their inclusion. Their presence was deemed of utmost importance since the club is considered one of the few that have the resources and finances to compete with the widely successful Boston Red Stockings.

The White Stockings were reluctant to join since they have been doing quite well barnstorming games accross the country and determining their own schedule.

A front office for the league is already being established with a choice of commisioner to be coming in the next upcoming days.

Rosters for the clubs will be determined from a national draft of already established talent and any new talent that wants to try out in their local city.

The success of the league is said to be expected a moderate, and long term success is considered a slim probability.

More to come about these developments soon.

White Stockings ready for inagural season

The Chicago White Stockings are ready to begin their spring training for the upcoming inagural Nartional profesional baseball league. The White Stockings will be managed by William Hulbert and will play their home games at the West Side Grounds near Halsted Street.

The team schedule will include 30 games, 15 home and 15 away. The top two division winners will face off in the championship. The National divisions are as follows:

AMERICAN
Cleveland Forest Citys
Philadelphia Athletics
St. Louis Brown Stockings
Baltimore Canaries

NATIONAL
Chicago White Stockings
Brooklyn Atlantics
Cincinnati Reds
Boston Red Stockings
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The roster for the Chicago team is all follows:

Frank Fleet P
22 year old right hander out of New York. The Whites will try and stretch him into becoming a starter, but wether he has the stamina remains to be seen.

Fergy Malone C
28 year old Irishman has a hot temper and is decent with the bat. He is especially influencial on the club through his leadership.

Jim Foran 1B
Yong and raw the 22 year old is still learning his craft. He does have some power and is a good candidate to improve.

Joe Quest 2B
Tried out and made the squad. A very young border line pro player. Hasnt shown anything in the game but will have a chance to prove himself.

Gene Kimball 2B
Very timid at the plate but good with the glove, Kimball is expected to platoon at second base with Quest.

Cap Anson 3B
Most likely the biggest star in the game. Immediate impact player that will influence the game in a variety of ways. A true star.

Steve King LF
Out of Troy Michigan King is another star. He has a great ability to swing the bat and hit from behind the count.

Charlie Pabor LF
Will primarily back up King. Needs to show much more polish in his overall game.

Tom Berry RF
Doesnt have the skill set to make any impact at all. Will be stretched at this level and needs to be a suprize to stick around.

George Guebel RF
Lanky German outfielder has good ability. Right field will be all his this season to make an impact.

Nealy Phelps 1B
Shouldnt really start at this level. But has worked hard and will get his chance to make an impact.

Al Barker RF
At 32 is the oldest man on the team. Brings maturity to the dugout but little else.

Charlie Sweasy 2B
Jesrey boy can make an impact at this level. Has quick feet and a knack for the game.

Count Sensengerfer CF
Another star and likely elite prospect. Has outstanding speed and a very dependable bat.

Ezra Sutton 3B
Star potential for the 20 year old Sutton. Said not to be the happiest away from his home in Jersey, but regardless he has the skills.

The experts are of course saying the Cubs should compete. Obviously however the lack of a starting pitcher of much quality could see this team struggle to get anyone out.

A Month of First for Pro Baseball; Whites hit with Injuries
The very first profesional league pitches were thrown this month in ball yards accross the country. Attendance was better then expected as fans came out to enjoy the early spring and see some live baseball.

The first game was played in Cleveland Ohio as the Forest Citys played the Canaries from Baltimore. A season and history of first in profesional baseball began then as the record books were opened for the first time.:
  • First major league hit by John Hatfield of the Canaries.
  • First major league strikeout by Dick McBride of Forest Citys
  • First major league run by Clevelands Bill Craver.
  • First major league stolen base by Dave Birdsall of the canaries.
  • First major league win by Al Spalding of Baltimore.
  • And Tom York, left fielder for the Cleveland team hit the very first long ball home run in big league history. The ball carried 411 feet!
The Canaries beat the Forest City's 4-3 in the very first game played.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
White Stockings Report

Tough Start
The Chicago White Stockings struggled to a 1-4 record for the month, well below the pre season expectations fans and media had had. One big reason was the lack of a dependable pitcher. Young Frank Fleet wasnt able to hold down the position sporting a 7.68 ERA and allowing 35 runs in 5 games.

The White Stockings lost 2 out of three to their rival Boston Red Stockings and then dropped their first two games of the home schedule against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Sutton sent to S. Louis for pitching
In reponse to their lack of a pithcer. Chicago traded young third base talent Ezra Sutton to the St. Louis Browns in exchange for starting pitcher Rynie Wolters. Wolters is expected to start all games for the rest of the season.

Injury Bug Hits
The injuries piled up on the Stockings as well this month to make matters more difficult. The team put a total of 4 players on the disabled list including star center fielder Count Sensenderfer who fractured his thumb.

Chicago 2-3 for month; season slipping away

The White Stockings are still trying to find themselves two months into the new season as they had another losing month and remain at the bottom of the National League with a 3-7 record. New addition Rynie Wolters has done well but it seemed like in May that the hitting was very inconsistent. In fact on in an extra innings loss to the Atlantics on May 20th the Whites didnt get their first hit until the 10th inning!

Many are saying that the team just isnt used to playing in a structured league and that they want to make their own schedule and plans. In fact some have even started rumors that the team may not even be interested in continueing in this league next season!

Still with 20 games left and Cap Anson finally beginning to swing the bat, the Cubs have alot to still play for this season. Also the incredible performance by player of the month Steve King has still many coming out the the ball park.

There's something about a young rookie winning the National Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Cherokee Fisher, a 26-year-old starter for the Cincinnati Reds.

In May, he topped off the month with a 3-1 mark and 2.25 ERA in 4 starts, tossed 36 innings, fanned 16 and held opposing teams to a .236 average.

This is the second month in a row Fisher has won this award

When Dave Eggler stepped up to the plate in May, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the American Batter of the Month award.
The young Philadelphia center fielder posted a .450 batting average with no home runs, 3 RBIs and scored 4 runs. Eggler also worked pitchers for no walks to post a .450 on-base percentage.

Pitcher of the month

George Zettlein has made fans throughout Major League Baseball take notice over the past month with an exceptional 3-2 record. No pitcher in the American threw better in May, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 5 starts Zettlein compiled a 1.84 ERA, putting up a 3-2 record, striking out 38 and tossing 44 innings.

Draft approaches

Next month the first annual amatuer player draft will take place in Philadelphia. The best prospects accross the country will be chosen to embark on a profesional baseball career that could bring them fame and glory.

We will have all the details next month as the season reaches its half way mark.

Despite Down Season; Star Cap Comes Around
The fact that the talented White Stockings are sitting comfortably in the cellar of the National Division at 6-14 has many wondering. Many are saying if this talented team has taken to this new league or are just going through the motions to get paid. The Whites have lost numerous games to teams they are more talented then.

Despite all this team stat Cap "pop" Anson is still performing and doing what he does bet. After a slow start Pop has turned his season around and has reestablished his reputation as one of the best hitters around. Anson is batting .341 with 28 hits and 14 runs, as well as stealing 6 bases.

"I know how to play this game te right way," said Anson. "its not an easy game for easy men"

Pops has been seen numerous times in the dugout yelling at his teamates for their lack of effort or comfort level. Many feel the young Anson already has shown strong leadership ability.

LEAGUE NOTES
  • Cherokee Fisher, one of the stars of the league and three time NL pitcher of the month has a partially torm labru and will most likely miss the remainder of the season. The blow is a big one for the Reds who now need to find a starting pitcher with few or none on the market.
  • Similar but worse problem for the Red Stockings as their ace Asa Brainard
will miss close to a year of action after a ligament in his arm. Overuse of pitchers is something the teams and league us looking into. Is pitching in all 30 games to severe a schedule?
  • Lip Pike of the St, Louis Browns was the AL batter of the month while George Zeittlein of the A's took home the pitching honor.
  • The NL awards went to Cy Bentley of the Red Stockings and John Bass of the same team.

The Philadelphia Athletics are holding off two competitors in the Canaries and Browns. The St. Louis Browns especially went 4-1 in the month and seem to be peaking at the right time.

The Boston Red Stockings are taking advantage of the injury to Reds ace Cherokee Fisher and have closed the gap to just two games. The Reds went just 2-3 in the month are looking for answers on the mound. The two teams have 3 games in Cincinnati to decide things.

White Stockings Report

Trade rumors circled around the Chicago camp this month but eventually nothing was done. Star outfielder Steve King who leads the team with 19 RBI waqs rumored to be headed out to St. Louis, but the deal was snubbed in the end when it was discovered that King was injured off the field by a cat! (yes this is true)

The team went 1-3 in the month and wont be playing for any pennants, all the talk remains on what the franchise will do in the offseason.

The team does lead the major leagues in stolen bases with 28

September 1871

Red Stockings and Athletics to meet for Championsip
The Boston Red Stockings beat the Cincinnati Reds two out of three games in the last month of the season and did just enough to overcome the Reds and win the National League. The Reds had been in first place for almost the entire season, but lost out in the end, never recovering after their star Cherokee Fisher was injured at the end of July; they went 3-9 without him.

On the other hand the Philadelphia A's didnt have the same fate and kept their lead in the American league for most of the season. The A's held off the St. Louis Browns, and did it with a 3 game sweep of Cleveland in September.

Although the hot Red Stockings could be the favorites in the best of 7 championship, the series should be a good one.

STOCKINGS END SEASON A DISAPOINTING 10-20

The Chicago Red Stockings to everyone's suprize lost double the games that they won and had a disaster of a season, their first ones as profesionals.

"I dont think enough people on this team cared," said Cap Anson. "We really have to look seriously if we should continue. No one wants to waste their time."

Discorse is at a high even in the front office, as it was comfirmed that the team was shoping their star outfielder Steve King and came minutes away from shipping him to Cincinnati; King's off the field issues have been of particular concern but he still remains on the roster.

March 1872

Baseball Preview 1872 Season
A new season is upon us as baseball is back and spring is in the air. The National Legue will compete again with the same number of teams but an extended schedule. For the first time the schedule will increase by 20 games From a 30 game season each team will have a 50 gae season making the road to the championship as grueling as ever.

The defending champion Philadelphia Atheletics are among the favorites again but will have stiff competition throughout. Here is a quick summary of the competing teams:

NATIONAL LEAGUE
BOSTON RED STOCKINGS
The defending Nationa League winners will look to complete the whole thing this season and are optimistic at the prospect of doing so. Cy Bentley is back as their ace pitcher having recieved the top award last season. Deacon White their catcher is also a star in the making, White batted .385 last season and drove in 25 runs. John Bass a burly right fielder also will contribute, having batted .378 last season. If heallthy the Red Stockings are the most talented team in the league.

BROOKLYN ATLANTICS
Pitching may be a weak point for this team and much of the pressure will fall on the shoulders of starter Al Pratt who had an up and down year last year. Pratt will need support from an offense led by Davy Force their thrilling short stop. Still the Atlantics are not expected to compete with the big boys because of their lack of depth, but they can prove everyone wrong with a good run. They finished last season an impressve 15-15 and only 3 games out.

CHICAGO WHITE STOCKINGS
With the worst record in the entire leage last season the White Stockings are looking for a revival. The talent is there with Cap Anson and Steve King on offense and a number of role players that should fit in. On the mound Rynie Wolters lost a league leading 18 games but his numbers were not that rotten with an ERA under 3. IF Wolters can have a decent year look for the Chicago club to compete for the top spot this time. Its a matter of motivation for this team and its time for their stars to step up.

CINCINNATI REDS
The collapse of last season has left this team as hungry as ever. Their star is back and healthy in Cherokee Fisher who can do it with his arm and his bat, leading the league in home runs with three. Fisher needs to stay healthy and the Reds could pick up where they were in the middle of last season, by far the best team in the entire league. Levi Meyerle may be the most popular player in the league and as a young star, this may be his season to shine.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
CLEVELAND FOREST CITYS
Cleveland is most likely the lightest hitting team in the league and will need to find a way to generate runs this season. Jimmy Wood and Joe Hall will need to create runs and many feel like they wont be able to for the 50 game schedule. On the mound Cleveland can be more confident Dick McBride on the mound, he had a WHIP last season below 1. Cleveland needs to overperform to really stay in the race and compete for a title.

BALTIMORE CANARIES
Al Spalding is dubbed by everyone in the league as the best pure pitcher and someone who is dominant when he is on his game. Extremely smart and athletic, Spalding may be able to put his team on his back and carry them the a title. Jim ORourke and the offense just needs to give him some support and let him do the rest. No team in the league is more dependent on just one player then the Baltimore Canaries.

Philadelphia Athletics
The defensing champions will settle for nothing less then a repeat. Everyone was impressed by how they handled Boston in the championship and no one deserves more credit then George Zettlein who dominated the league on the mound and is the best rival Al Spalding has in this league. George Wright had a down year at the plate but still many feel he has the talent to make it big this season. The Athletics are now on everyones hit list, and will have to prove themselves in a longer season.

ST. LOUIS BROWNS
Lip Pike will lead an offense that can hurt you if not watched closely. Pike was awarded the best hitter prize and seems to be getting better as he goes. Candy Cummings needs to perform as good or better on the mound as the division is stocked with strong pitching and even a bad inning could cost them big. St. Louis isnt favored by anyone to compete, but with this league being so young, they can prove everyone wrong by wining when they arnt suppose to.

So another season is upon us, season number 2.

April 1872

Season begins; Chicago comes out strong
The Chicago White Stockings ended last season with the worse record in the league at 10-20. They vowed to have a much better seocnd season and true to their word they have come out strong in the opening month; a 5-3 record has then tied for the lead in the National League.

The Whites showed their ability especially in a 16-0 route of the Brookyn team on April 23rd. The biggest margin of victory in the young leagues history.

Hoping to shake things up, Chicago pulled a trade just before opening day. Chicago sent Charlie Pabor to Cleveland in exchange for second baseman Tom Carey. Carey has proven to be a good addition having driven in 6 runs along with a home run in the opening month.

The big star for the Whites this early season is pitcher Rynie Wolters. Wolters has 5 wins with a 2.72 ERA, the pitcher earned the pitcher of the month award for his efforts.

League Notes

Inuries Hurt favorites
Cherokee Fisher who missed half of last season went into the new year n the shelf for the favorite Cincinnati Reds. Fisher had shoulder soreness and missed the first 2 weeks of the season. The Reds started a mediocore 4-4.

Career Ending Injuries
Young Baltimore centerfielder Marty Swandell was shocked to hear that his career dreams in baseball were over almost before they began. The player suffered a severe concusion while making a play. Suffering from memory loss among other things, doctors decided the young man should stop playing ball.

And the biggest news came out of Boston, as the Red Stockings lost their star pithcer Asa "Count" Brainard. The ace pitcher ruptured his ulnar ligament and there is no known alternative to fix such a problem, the pitcher will never take the mound again. The Count was no doubt one of the best pitchers in the league, and the Red Stockings really felt the loss, starting the year with the leagues worse record of 2-6.

Good performances
St. Louis Bob Addy had a first for the league going 5-5 in a game against Cleveland on April 19th. The Browns as a whole have been the talk of the league, starting off with an imressive 7-1 record.

Levi Meyrele also got 5 hits in a game against Boston. The young right fielder has been off to an unbelievable start and is the talk of the league. He is batting .514 with 9 RBI and already has bashed 2 home runs!

White Stockings on a Roll; King a Star

The Chicago White Stockings appear to have put it all together early in the 1872 season and sit atop of the National league with its best record of 11-5.

Many know of the talent of Cap Anson who is having a fine season of his own, but the star talent on the Chicago team has to be left fielder Steve King.

King is off to a grand start to the season batting .400 in 16 games while driving in 12 runs. Even more impressive King has not struck out once in his 75 at bats and is regarded around the league of having its best eye.

King summed up his early season well, " am seeing the ball so well it has become almost easy to hit." One thing is for sure that for the fans and anyone else following the 30 year old he makes the game look easy.

League Notes

20 GAME HIT STEAK

Levi Meyerle of the Cincinnati Reds had the longest hitting streak in baseball history by hitting in 20 straught games before his streak was halted by the Chicago White Stockings.
Meyerle has been off to an impressive start to say the least batting .455 with 3 home runs and 15 RBI's.

ATLANTICS SUFFER SUDDEN BLOW

The Brooklyn Atlantics lost their star hitter Wee Davy Force who suffered nerve damage while making a throw. Force hit .325 last season and and was batting .298 this year.
The Atlantics are 8-8 thus far this season.

INCREDIBLE GAME IN CHICAGO

The Atlantics and White Stockings played a game in Chicago that will be remembered for a long time. The teams combined for 40 hits and 25 runs in the 14-11 White Stocking win!

BASEBALL MONTHY

June 1872

CHICAGO IS PERFECT, TAKES 11 IN A ROW!
The Chicago White Stockings had been talking all off season about how they were poised to have a rebound year in the National League, now they have made it happen. The Whte Stocking have the best record in base ball and have strung together an incredible 11 game winning streak, going all of June without a single loss.

Pitcher Rynie Wolters has won an incredible 19 games already and won once again the pitcher of the month award. Wolters has been brilliant this season and is a huge reason for the team's success. Wolters wasnt expected to be such a strong presence coming out of St. Louis last season, but he has shown more then something this season.

Cap Anson (.345, 22 RBI) and Steve King (.414, 17 RBI) continue to fuel the offense but the unexpected performaces by Fergy Malone (.304 17 RBI) and Frank Fleet (.370, 13 RBI). Fleet made the successfull transition from pitching to the infield very well.

The White Stockings could be on their way to a championship, and interest and attendance have been on the rise.

A suprize at number three, this kid is said to be inconsistent and a risk.

League Notes

Addy a Perfect 6

Bob Addy of the St. Louis Browns went 6 for 6 in his game against Cleveland. The left handed second baseman indeed had a day to remember and is a big reason why the Browns are leading the American League.

Gedney out

Count Gedney of the Boston Red Stockings will miss the remainder of the season after he ruptured a disk in his back. Boston continues to suffer terrible injuries and sit with the worse record in the entire league.
