Bloodball's Best-forgotten Facts: Grumpires and Bat Brats

The Mager League Bloodball founders discovered in the holy text of Bloodball the mention of vampires, bat boys and even “full counts.” In the text, there were illustration of black-cloaked figures stooping over the necks of crouched grabbers (“catchers” in the old game) who were waiting for the flings to be thrown.

Adult referees were needed to keep the rules and bat brats had to carry the sacred clubs. It would be quite a spectacle seeing the bat brats flying though the stadiums during night games. Since there were no vampires in Hysterika at the time, the founders sent recruiters to Sylvania in the Old World.

Now negotiating with the vampire counts of Sylvania is not without risk, and some blood was spilled, but eventually a motley crew of vampires, young and old, was lured by the sport of bloodball and its promise of prestige and bloodsucking. The vampires were tricked into believing that occasional neck biting would be permitted in the game.

Though pleased with their official MLB vampiring uniform, it was quite a disappointment to the vampires to hear they were required to wear face masks to protect the grabber or clubber (“batter”) from puncture wounds. To add insult to injury, the vampires were then told there had been a mistake in spelling and that they should be called “umpires.”

This revelation just put the vampire counts in an even fouler mood, so when they did have to remove their masks, they typically displayed frowns and grimaces, so mager leaguers and fans alike began to call them grumpires, the name by which they are known today.

They might have a chance with those close outfield walls down the lines.

Bloodball's Best-forgotten Facts: The Blood Mangled Banner

That mind-boggling melody that is sung (an exaggeration) at the start of every Mage League Baseball game is the Star Mangled Banner. This ancient Hysterikan melody was picked up and words rearranged by the Imperial troops under siege at Sinsenasty in 2540 by an Ogre freebooter army.

As the Ogres flung themselves unsuccessfully at the solid walls of the fortress, the Imperial defenders displayed their scarred banner and screamed out those well-known (or are they annoying?) lyrics.

The Blood Mangled Banner

O! slay that you see by the dawn's early light,
What so cowardly they assailed at the twilight's last screaming,
Whose clawed stripes and bright scars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the Ogres' red glare, the blood spurting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that blood-mangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the sheep and the home of the slave?

Bloodball's Best-forgotten Facts: More Bloodball City Nickname Origins

A true Bloodball fan never has enough bloodball trivia. Here's more to gorge yourself on, Bloodball Fans!

Piggsplurgh was the nickname the Halflings gave to this city whose suburbs they filled with hog farms, and it exemplifies their gluttonous habits of devouring the quickly slaughtered animals. Piggsplurgh is also known as the “Squeal City” from the non-stop noise coming from its porkers.

Sinsenasty referred to the red light district prominent here during the late wars. Sin and nastiness is practically the city’s motto even today. Popularly called the "Blue Strip City."

Brokenlymb is that burrow across from Manfatten Island in New Ork where one Orc clan resided. Anyone other than an Ork found within the limits of this clan’s burrow had his limbs summarily broken for trespassing; hence, its other appropriate name “Flatcrush.”

Bloodball's Best-forgotten Facts: Injuryfielders and Others

“Running the bases in Bloodball is like running the gauntlet!” was reportedly spoken by one bloodballer. The reason is the injuryfield (or infield), bloodball fans!

The injuryfielders are made up of the fist baseman, sock’em baseman, hurt baseman and shirtstop. Besides grabbing the bloodball, these infielders main job is to hinder and harm any runner who dares to reach or advance base. In fact, even the grabber typically grabs the shirt tails of any clubber or manages to get a hit and tries to run to fist base. The infielders use fists, sock jaws, stomp on toes, or tear off jerseys to impede the runners –all of course against official bloodball rules! The problem is that although the grumpires notice such hooligan-like infractions, they often ignore them since flowing blood is often the consequence of such actions but is so appealing to vampires. No wonder injuries are so severe and lengthy!

Runners of course don’t have to worry about the outfielders since they are “outside their reach.” The outfielders usually are chasing down flying bloodballs like loopers, bolts, beeliners, and bouncing headrollers, or they are slingshotting the bloodball back to the infield often with the intent of braining the runners with it.

“Get on you horse’ was once yelled at one outfielder, so the term, centaurfielder (cf) or centaur, appeared in bloodball lore. Maybe the names, wightfielder (rf) and elfielder (lf), originated from the races that first planted their stinkin’ feet in the grass there. Plus, Wights were first attracted to bloodball when they heard about dead balls, and Elves feel “left out" due to their own pompous attitude towards the other bloodball races.

MLB Creation Settings

These are some of the creation settings for Mage League Bloodball.

1. 16 "mager" league teams divided into two leagues.

2. 8 "miner" leagues, one for each bloodball race, each consisting of 12 teams - 6 in each competing league-each of these leagues' six teams provides bloodballers for only one MLB team. Miner leagues are AAA.

3. MLB and miner leagues play a 112 game schedule. Each team plays all the others in their league 16 times (8H,8A).

4. MLB play with 1956 year import setting including general strategic tendencies.

5. Miner league have unique general strategic tendencies depending on the bloodball race. These tendencies are based on the charactersitics of races from Blood Bowl (movement allowance, agility, armor value and strength).

6. No foreigners allowed.

7. Trades between teams in the MLB and miner leagues are restricted by race, so, in the MLB for example, an elf team in the Hysterikan League can only trade players to the elf team in the Irrational League.

8. No free agency.

9. 1956 finances.

10. Injuries set at very high.

11. Trading frequency average and easy.

12, Suspensions, drugs and injuries enabled.

Bloodball’s Best-forgotten Facts: Greenskins

Players of all races play Bloodball for racial pride and honor and the restrained brutality of the game, but greenskins fuel the sport more and more, especially for the greedy team owners.

Professional Bloodball players don’t get paid in gold crowns like in the Old World. Instead they are given salaries in the common currency of Hysterika – the greenskin. As you know, the greenskin is a slip of paper with a snake whose body is stabbed vertically with a stake in three places. This currency has painted portraits issued by the various races – Goblin, Imperial, Dwarf, etc on one side.

Historians of antiquity have found numerous examples of the old Hysterikan “dollar” currency, but its origin has confused historians (no surprise there) because there is no picture of dolls or females on it, only pictures of old and wrinkled, bearded humans. The dollar was also called a greenback because of its color no doubt.

During the past wars in Hysterika, the Imperial government at Sinsenasty used to issue bounties on dead Orcs and Goblins. Heads were too bulky to carry to the Imperial strongholds, so the Empire announced that the green hides of the slain Orcs and Goblins would suffice. These hides or “greenskins” were pinned together by a stake and brought to the Imperial agent who would set up his table by the side of a Owhoa river bank and conduct his “banking” transactions –greenskins for gold and silver. Thus, the first “bank” in Hysterika was founded by the invading Imperials.

The greenskin naturally became the popular currency choice for the post-war economy of Hysterika.

Yarath is as trusting as Ogres go which isn't much. Probably a ruse to trick batters into believing he's not doctoring up the ball which he does.

Sour Grapes League Report

Chewsday - Morque 31, 2601

“Spring Braining” came to an end today as the MLB teams wrapped up their 24-game schedule. The Dwarf Screwloose Frowns took the Hysterikan League (HL) mini-flag while in the Irrational League (IL), the Orc Brokenlymb Daggers won 17 games and won the title. The other MLB teams just snickered and laughed off the Sour Grapes League standings.

The real goal of the Sour Grapes League is to whittle down the opposition by any means possible and to cull the weak and infirm from the rosters. To that end, 104 players were mangled, mashed or fell to a host of sicknesses during the Spring.

Red Pox LF Sarm Holefire suffered post-headbanging trauma and was tossed from the MLB forever.
The imperilous Cleavehand Insanes seemed to take the brunt of the hammering. The Insanes’ Carolus Ludenhoffer had a kicked kneecap and his teammate 1B Kasmir Mohrmann , a pummeled shoulder; both are out for 4-5 months. 1B Eberhard Nuin has a collapsed elbow and is out for 7 months.

The Frowns’ SP Hoili Minecart will have bone chips cut out of his elbow and will be recovering on a Furyday beach for six months.

All these weaklings won’t be missed this season!

The real Mage League Bloodball schedule begins on Peril 6, 2601.
