BROWNS FINALLY GET SOME HITS IN GOODRICH

The Stockbridge Browns bats finally came alive in game 3 of their 4 game series in Goodrich. The Browns pounded out 17 hits in an 11-8 victory over the Bombers and snap Goodrich's 4-game winning streak. Outfielder Raymond Brunet and newly acquired catcher Carl Curran led the way for the Browns as each had 3 hits and drove in 3 runs. The victory gets the Browns back over the .500 mark at 10-9 on the season. Goodrich falls to 11-8.

The Browns scored 3 times in the second inning with Brunet's 2-run triple being the big blow. Stockbridge added 4 more runs in the third inning to go up by 7. Browns pitcher George Patton (2-1, 5.12) was cruising along as he had retired the first 9 Goodrich batters in order before the Bombers got on the scoreboard with a 2-run homer from Roger Beecher (.375,2,7) in the 4th inning. Stockbridge increased their lead to 10-2 before Goodrich made a game of it with 5 runs in the 8th inning.

Patton earned the victory, pitching 7 and two-thirds innings while allowing 5 runs on 8 hits. George Moore fanned 2 in a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the season.

MANAGERS NOTES: New catcher Carl Curran did his best to make me forget about recently demoted backstop Jim Heil. Curran had 3 singles in 5 at bats and drove in 3 runs......Shortstop Charles Rankins and thirdbaseman Bruce Coffee joined Curran and Brunet with 3 hits today.....It was Coffee's first hits against Goodrich pitching as he went 0-for-7 in the 2 losses after entering the series hitting over .500.

Things got a little dicey late as Patton all of sudden just lost the ability to find the plate. He walked 3 in a row to start the 8th inning and before I could get someone ready in the bullpen he had given up a double and a homerun to allow the Bombers to close the score from 11-3 to 11-8. Hugh Benefield faced one batter in the 8th to get us out of the inning.

In other action the Foal Indians moved ahead of Cottswald and into first place in the Breda Bay League after being the Explorers for the third straight game. This time it was 5-4 as Foal scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the victory. Foal pitcher Terrance Cox (1-3, 4.66) did not get the decision but the league strikeout leader did fan 14 Cottswald batters in the game.

Mark McLane did not allow an earned run in 7 innings as he won in his first start at AA, leading the Hollister Islanders past the Emory Lookouts 4-3. The 35 year old was 2-0 at AAA Danbury before his demotion this week.

21 year old infielder Oliver Mack (.367,2,17) drove in 3 runs to lead the Midas Marlins past the Newton Bears 7-6.

MAJOR LEAGUE ROUND-UP
SEALS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE

After going 16-8 in spring training many felt this was the year the Essex Seals might finally win their second pennant in franchise history. The Seals, who's only pennant came in 1952, finished in a tie for second last year and had hopes of stringing together 2 winning seasons in a row for the first time since 1958-59.

However, things could not have started any worse for manager Ray Telles, who took over for the retired John Cowell during the off-season. The Seals have lost 7 of their first 8 games and are already 6 games out of first place and the season is barely a week old.

The latest loss was a 7-4 setback against the Robbins in Port Windsor. Rumblings out of Essex are in full force as to how long manager Telles will hang on to his job. He previously managed the New London Lions for 5 seasons and won pennants in 1967 and 1968. He was named the Manager of the Year in 1967 but the way things are going in Essex it is unlikely he will be manager for the year this time around.

In other Bay League action first place Aberswyth beat Perth 3-2. 31 year old Chris Ford (1-0, 4.35) went the distance for his first win of the season in 3 starts. The only other game saw St Paul beat London 12-9. Outfielder Dale Monette (.429,3,10) homered and drove in 4 runs to lead the Sailors.

The Portsmouth Mariners had the day off in the Mountain League. The Mariners open a 12-game road trip in Chester tomorrow against the Clippers. Chester fell 6-4 to the Cardinals in Cahill in one of 3 games on the Mountain League slate today.

The Port Windsor Pirates improved to 6-1 on the season with a 9-3 victory over Abbotsford. Veteran infielder Nick Beam (.478,2,8) hit a pair of homers to lead the Pirates attack.

The other game took 10 innings to decide a winner. Oxford prevailed over Wellington 6-5 thanks to a pinch-hit rbi single from rookie Mark Davison.

HARRISON FACES A DILEMMA

Managing in the minors the past few seasons has been with just one goal in mind: To get back to the Breda Major Leagues where I spent a decade as a player with the Wellington Volcanoes. I had expected that chance would eventually come with Wellington until the Volcanoes organization fired me as their AAA manager at Dover in the off-season.

Portsmouth called quickly and gave me the job here at AA Stockbridge and I am enjoying it and figured I would spend a couple of seasons in the minors with the Mariners organization until a big league opportunity came. Little did I know that the opportunity might come so soon, and it would be with the lowly Essex Seals.

It is no secret to anyone who picks up a sports section that the Seals organization is in complete chaos. Team owner Mike Kopp Jr took over when his father passed away 2 years ago and promptly saw his team finish 2nd in the Bay League last season, it's best finish since 1955. Kopp's insistence on being involved in every baseball decision was rumoured to be one of the causes of the health problems that prompted managerJohn Cowell to retire in November.

Cowell was replaced by Ray Telles, a former manager of the year who led New London to back to back pennants in 1967-68. All was well in spring when the Seals went 16-8 but after losing 7 of their first 8 regular season games owner Kopp is threatening to can his manager and media rumours list me as one of the potential replacement candidates.

I'd love to manage in the majors but this situation is far from ideal. While I have never met Kopp I dont like much of what I have heard about him. To me the team does not look that strong and I would say they overachieved last season plus made a couple of bonehead trades in the winter. Add to that the pressure from Kopp shooting his mouth off in the papers saying a pennant is the only thing that will satisfy him this year and I think this is a no-win situation.

Nothing is definate yet but if the Seals do not turn things around quickly my agent says to expect a call from Kopp in the next week or two. At that point I may have a tough decision to make.

ESSEX SEALS TEAM HISTORY
The Seals all the dregs of Breda baseball. They have the worst winning percentage of all 16 major league teams and won their only Bay League Pennant in the franchise's 50 year history in 1952 but promptly lost the Breda Series in 4 straight games to Cahill. Chester is the only other of the 16 Breda League teams never to win a Breda Series but the Clippers have 4 pennants to their name.

Before finishing in a tie for second last year with 82 wins the Seals went 15 seasons in which they finished no higher than 4th and were 7th or 8th in 10 of those years.

APRIL 28, 1972 : STOCKBRIDGE GAZETTE
HARRISON TO BE NAMED SEALS NEW GENERAL MANAGER

Sources close to the Breda League Essex Seals have confirmed that the Seals will name Stockbridge bench boss Lane Harrison as the big league club's new general manager. Harrison, who missed the Browns game in Goodrich today with what the club described as flu-like symptoms, was not available to comment.

The Browns lost 8-7 to Goodrich and have dropped 3 of their last 4 games.

FROM THE THOUGHTS OF LANE HARRISON
I have to admit I was not surprised when I first got a phone call early this morning at our team hotel in Goodrich from Essex Seals owner Mike Kopp Jr. I had seen the rumours in the papers and my agent told me I was on the shortlist for a job in Essex. Kopp just wanted to talk to me a bit and said he was in Goodrich and could we meet for breakfast.

The meeting went well enough and I have to admit he did not seem anywhere near as overbearing as the media has painted him. He did not offer me a job at the meeting and while our conversations were quite general in nature, I could not help but feel he just might ask me to be the Seals manager if he decides to make a change. He said he would be in touch and about 6 hours later he was.

The Seals played this afternoon and I listened to a bit of it on the radio in the visitors clubhouse with a lot more interest than usual. They lost again, for the 9th time in 10 games this season. Just moments after the final out was recorded I got a phonecall. It was Mike Kopp Jr.

However, Kopp was not calling to offer me the manager job in Essex. Instead he asked me to run the entire organization as the Seals new General Manager. He offered me a 4 year guaranteed contract and despite all of the bad things I heard about the Seals and their forever struggling organization I could not pass it up since all I ever had managing in the minors was a 1 year deal.

We reached a verbal agreement on the phone - well he told me what he was offering and I said yes - and I hung up so I could tell my players on the Browns and the parent Mariners organization.

Just like that I was replaced as manager for that evening's game and our pitching coach took over. I left the Browns clubhouse and went back to pack for the trip to Essex. I had only been here a month but a lot of players made a great impression on me. Maybe I will see some of them in a Seals uniform in the future.

Now the hard work begins. The Seals have been the laughingstock of the Breda Leagues for decades. How could I, a former player with 4 years managing experience and no experience at all as a general manager, turn things around?

I can't believe how excited I am about this opportunity and the fact that Kopp told me I had a clean slate and could do whatever I felt was in the best interests of the club....at least until he disagreed with me. He laughed after that last remark but for some reason I don't think he was entirely joking.

So I am excited but I am also nervous as hell.

I will be in my new office in Essex at 6 am tomorrow to start pouring over scouting reports on our entire organization.

A quick note. I had not planned on switching teams so quick into this dynasty. I have been managing in the game for about 15 seasons and had never been offered a major league position until now so I figured I better take it.

I will continue to follow Stockbridge's season with small updates but now the focus is on trying to run an entire organization.

April 27, 1972 6AM - Essex Seals General Manager's office
I am alone in my office at the Essex Grounds. I might well be the only person in the stadium considering the hour and the fact that the team is in Port Windsor preparing for the third of a 4 game set with the Robbins. I will use this time to look through detailed scouting reports on the 121 players in our organization.

At 11 am I will be part of a press conference introducing me as the new general manager of the Seals and at 3:05 I will watch our game with the Robbins on tv. The plan is for me to meet the team in person tomorrow in Port Windsor and then join them as we continue our road trip with a stop in London.

Things could not be much worse for Essex as I take over. The team is 1-9 on the ice and 2 days into a terrible 29 day road trip.

Where do I start? Pitching is the key to any organization so lets start there.

Here are pitchers on my 40 man roster:

JOHN FLANAGAN: My scouts love the 29 year old saying he is on the verge of becoming an ace. He was 13-15 with a 4.96 era a year ago as a rookie. He is 0-2 in 3 starts so far this year and struggling with his control early. However, he is the closest thing I have to a number 1 starter.

DAN FUTRELL: The 33 year old Abers Forest native is the number 2 man in our rotation simply because we have nothing else. His career record is 86-110 and he gives up far too many walks and base hits to ever be more than a bottom of the rotation guy.

MARTY VOLK: Volk is number 3 in out rotation but scouts say he belongs in long relief or perhaps AAA. The 35 year old has good leadership skills and I assume that is why he was acquired in the off-season. He is 122-111 for his career which included stops in St Paul and Aberdeen before coming to the Seals.

HUGH DAVIS: A borderline starter, Davis gets the number 4 spot in our rotation. The native of St Paul went 11-5 with a 4.21 era for the Seals last year but he tends to walk more than he strikeouts and that is a big problem in this league.

ELI SMITH: The 31 year old has carved out a nice career as a mop up man on very little talent. He has made 341 major league appearances in his 10 year career and has a lifetime record of 29-27. My scouting staff feel he is better suited for a AAA bullpen.

JIM WILSON: The 30 year old was acquired from Ellborough in the off-season. He is very highly thought of by our scouting staff and they peg him as a potential closer. He regularly hits 97 mph on his fastball and possesses an outstanding slider.

MARTIN BRADBERRY- 27 year old lefthanded setup man is considered to be a fine major league reliever and quite a success story. Born in Essex, he was claimed off waivers by his hometown team prior to last season. After 7 years in the minors the Seals gave him his first shot at the Breda Leagues and all Bradbury did was go 14-1 with 2 saves in 78 appearances.

KEVIN RICE- The 28 year old enters his fourth season as the Seals closer. He has a tremendous strikeout to walk ratio (fanned 65 while walking 17 last year) and has saved 53 games over the past 3 years.

Rounding out the pitchers on my 40 man roster are the following 3 players at Carins of the AAA Pacific League:

Brett Yandell Cairns AAA - Promoted to AAA midway thru last season, the 26 year old went 11-4 in 19 starts and helped the Carins Redbirds win AAA Series championship. He is my only prospect considered possibly ready to pitch in a major league rotation. However, my scouts peg him as a back of the rotation starter at best.

Greg DeBolt Cairns AAA- A 24 year old who should be in the majors soon. He had 14 saves last year playing in A and AA and will spend a good part of this season as a setup man in AAA. Look for him to get a major league call-up before the season is over.

Archie Ford Cairns AAA- The 24 year old is another player who could join a farily strong major league bullpen. He pitched at all 4 levels last year starting in Class A and finishing with 2 major league appearances in September. Most of last year he was the closer for Cairns but in the majors he is probably better suited as a setup man.

I also have 3 pitchers on the 60 day DL

Cordell King- The 29 year old tore up his elbow last June and is not expected back at all this year. He is a serviceable bottom of the rotation starter in the major leagues. He was 15-5 as a rookie with Cahill in 1968 but was 29-36 over the next 2 years with an era more than 2 runs higher than his rookie campagin. Essex acquired him mid-way through the 1970 season. Last year he was 2-4 with a 5.61 era in 10 starts before the injury.

John Leake- At 38 the chances of Leake recovery fully from Tommy John surgery are probably slim. A late bloomer, the Wellington native became Essex's top starter from 1967 until his injury last July. I am not counting on him pitching for us again.

Chris Brumley- The 31 year old reliever established himself as a major league regular in 1969. He had a 2.67 era and was 6-0 as a setup man in 1970 and had 9 saves last year. There was a chance he could have claimed the closer job with the Seals this year but he blew out his arm in spring training and will be sidelined for a year.

LOOKING AT MY PITCHING DEPTH CHART WE SEE

MAJOR LEAGUE ROTATION
1- RHP John Flanagan
2- LHP Dan Futrell
3- RHP Marty Volk
4- LHP Hugh Davis

MR LHP Eli Smith
Set RHP Jim Wilson
Set LHP Martin Bradberry
CL RHP Kevin Rice

Code:
PROSPECTS
THR NAME	AGE	TEAM Notes
L Brett Rush 23	Fastby 1st rd pick in 1968. Had injuries but scout likes him
L Keith Davis 21	HollJct longshot to make majors. Candidate to promote to AA
R Tom Chaffins 21	HollJct has a shot at the majors
R Brett Yandell 26	Cairns 11-4 at Cairns last yr. Journeyman at best
L Paul Harris 20	HollJct may be better suited as a closer in majors
L Ken More 20	HollJct scout is not high on him but I think he is worth a look
L George McCoy 23	Fastby closer who has a shot at the majors
R Ward Williams 22	HollJct another closer who may make majors as a reliever.
There are only 3 pitchers (Rush, Davis and Chaffins) listed in my top 20 prospects and only Rush qualifies for the top 100 prospect list published at the start of the season by Baseball Breda. Rush ranks as the number 3 pitcher and 19th overall.

We do have a little more talent in our system when looking at position players but I will get to that tomorrow as it is almost time for the Essex Seals to play their first game with Lane Harrison in the general manager chair.

Hey this being a big-league General Manager is easy. My first day overseeing the organization and the major league Essex Seals improve to 2-9 on the season with an 11-2 pounding of the Port Windsor Robbins. Triple A affiliate Carins beats St Mary 6-5 in 10 innings. My class A team in Hollowell Junction wins over Addington. Only the AA affiliate Fastby Blue Jays suffer a loss today.

ESSEX WINS 11-2
Matt Lassater's 6th inning grandslam homerun broke open what was up until then a tight game and lifted the Essex Seals to just their second victory of the season, 11-2 over the Port Windsor Robbins. Shortstop Scott McLeod also had a big game for the Seals, going 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored while third baseman John Earls had 4 rbi's.

The only bad news offensively was our top young prospect, outfielder Harley Greathouse, went 0-for-3 and continues to struggle. In 9 games, Greathouse is 2-for-27 for an .074 average. I think my first difficult move will be to send him back to AAA to gain some confidence. That will likely happen in a day or two unless he suddenly gets hot. I will talk more about Greathouse and the rest of my position players in the next post.

You know our pitchers a little bit from the previous post so here is how they did today. Marty Volk got the start and allowed 1 earned run in 5 innings. He was lifted in the top of the 6th so Lassater could pinch-hit so Volk gets the win to even his record at 1-1.

Eli Smith was brilliant in 3 innings of relief, allowing just 1 hit. Martin Bradbury pitched the 9th giving up 2 hits and the final Port Windsor run.

Other action in the Bay League saw Perth beat Ellborough 7-6 thanks to Brian Jenkins walk-off homer with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th. Aberswyth and St Paul remain tied for first after each recorded a big win. The Aces thumped New London 14-3 while the Sailors downed the London Stars 10-6.

TRACKING THE ESSEX FARM SYSTEM

AAA CAIRNS RED BIRDS OF THE PACIFIC LEAGUE

The Red Birds, unlike the parent Essex Seals, have enjoyed some success over the past few years. The club has won the triple A Series twice in the past 3 years including last year when they finished with an 18 game lead atop the Pacific League and then swept Avon River League champion New Oxford in the series.

This year the Red Birds are off to a 10-7 start and sit 1 game behind the Pacific League leading Scheffield Suns. Today they beat the St Marys Chiefs 6-5 in 11 innings. 28 year old infielder Ellis Marvel homered and drove in 3 rbi's to pace Cairns. Veteran reliever Vince Stafford(3-0, 2.33) pitched 1 inning in relief of Bobby Warden to get the win. Tomorrow, prospect Brent Yandell (1-1, 5.00) gets the start as the Red Birds look to complete a 3 game sweep of St Marys.

AA FASTBY BLUE JAYS OF THE NORTH-SOUTH MOUNTAIN LEAGUE
We have discussed the Breda Bay League in great detail because it is the home of the Stockbridge Browns. The other Class AA league is where Essex' affiliate the Fasty Blue Jays compete. Presently the Jays are 11-10 and sit right in the middle of the North-South Mountain League standings.

Historically, the Jays are the winningest Class AA franchise with 8 AA Championships to their credit, however all but one of them came prior to 1954. The only recent success was winning the 1968 title. Last year the Jays finished dead last in the NSM League, 33 games behind the Blackpool Celtics.

The Jays opened a 3 game set at the Oxford Junction Jets with a 5-3 loss.

A HOLLOWELL JUNCTION GOLD SOX OF THE WABASH VALLEY LEAGUE
The Gold Sox are 8-14 and tied for last place in the 6 team Wabash Valley League. They are 7 games behind the first place Glasgow Arrows. The Gold Sox beat Addington 6-5 today. Notes from the game:

-Catcher Keith Coleman, a 20 year old second year pro homered and drove in 4 runs.
-20 year old pitcher Ken More struggled last just 4 innings while walking 6 and allowing 6 hits. The bullpen bailed him out of a bases loaded jam so he was only charged with 1 earned run. The performance was a little dissappointing after he struck out 10 and walked just 1 in a 7 inning effort last time out.

We did sign a new player to the Gold Sox roster. Pitcher Andy Walls, a 20 year old lefthander who is 6'11" tall and boasts a mid-90's fastball was signed to add depth to our bullpen. Our scouts see him as a longshot to make the majors and figure his control and lack of a solid second pitch will be his downfall. He struck out 111 batters in 93 innings while walking 67 for the youth league Goodrich Nauticals last year. He was undrafted so this will be his first pro team.

STOCKBRIDGE BROWNS UPDATE
I will continue to track my old club. The Browns suffered a terrible loss to the Bears in Newton falling 9-8 in 10 innings. Stockbridge entered the bottom of the 9th with a 8-4 lead before allowing the Bears to tie the game and then win it on Bill Love's 4th homer of the season, a solo shot off of Hugh Benefield with 2 out in the 10th. Bruce Coffee had another 3 hits for the Browns and is hitting .447 on the season.
