MLB Modified

I am going to do a MLB replay with some modifications. I am using most of the settings that GARLON used in his "Full Sim 1871-2009."
  • There was no organized baseball before 1901.
  • 10 teams in each league (AL and NL).
  • Two divisions in each league; complete Minor League system.
  • West coast baseball is alive and well!!
  • Negro League players are included.
  • Players start with no history.
  • Inaugural draft in 1901, with yearly amateur drafts after that.
  • Players do not retire according to history, and will not miss seasons according to history.

The 20 teams:

American League
East
  1. Washington Senators
  2. New York Yankees
  3. Cleveland Indians
  4. Boston Red Sox
  5. Baltimore Orioles
West
  1. Minnesota Millers
  2. Los Angeles Angels
  3. Kansas City Blues
  4. Detroit Tigers
  5. Chicago White Sox

National League
East
  1. Pittsburgh Pirates
  2. Philadelphia Phillies
  3. Havana Sugar Kings
  4. Cincinnati Reds
  5. Chicago Cubs
West
  1. St. Louis Cardinals
  2. San Francisco Seals
  3. Hollywood Stars
  4. Atlanta Crackers
  5. Milwaukee Brewers

It looks like there are six Negro League players available for 1901. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to import them and I am making a few more tweaks to the set-up and then I will hold the inaugural draft.

I am using the Lahman database (the one that comes with the game). I am trying to find out if I import the Negro League players from the Gambo database, will that mess up anything. If it does, I will have to switch to the Gambo database for the entire dynasty. Also, I am waiting to see if changing the team abbreviations will have an effect on the game.

I want to get everything right before I start.

I will also be adding in players from Japan (i.e. Sadaharu Oh) and some Pacific Coast League players, if I can figure it out.

In order for this replay to work, I found that I can't play with historical retirement dates. The computer will decide when a player retires. Players will start when their professional careers actually started, even if that is as a minor league player. The player database will include some Pacific Coast League players, other career minor league players, Negro League players, and eventually Asian players. I hope it will make for an interesting dynasty.

The 1901 inaugural draft is over. The top two Negro League players in the draft were Grant Johnson and Sol White. They were both drafted in the 6th round, picks 107 and 108, respectively. Also, both of them are in the starting line-ups for opening day.

Below are the top 20 picks:

Round 1
Round 1, Pick 1 - Los Angeles Dodgers: SP Cy Young
Round 1, Pick 2 - Houston Astros: 2B Nap Lajoie
Round 1, Pick 3 - New York Mets: SP Christy Mathewson

Round 1, Pick 5 - Pittsburgh Pirates: SP Rube Waddell
Round 1, Pick 6 - New York Yankees: SP Mordecai Brown
Round 1, Pick 7 - Cincinnati Reds: SP Jesse Tannehill

The 1901 season ended up with close races in three out of four divisions, with only the Cubs running away from the pack. The Cubs won with a 16 game cushion and were the only team to win 90 or more games.

Some non-major league players (In Real Life...IRL) had some big numbers in 1901. For instance, Hi Ladd, who hit 35 homers for the Twins, played most of his professional career in the Connecticut State League. George Kihm, who came in 5th in the AL in homers and RBI, had a great season with the Orioles. IRL he never made it to the "bigs," playing mostly in the American Association. Also, Phil Nadeau, who lead the AL in homers and RBI for the Angels, never played in the majors at all. He had a 17 year minor league career, playing all over the country, including the old Pacific Coast League.

Over in the NL, Ed Breckenridge (Giants) lead in homers and RBI. IRL he had a seven year minor league career, playing in northeastern leagues.

Negro League players, Grant Johnson (Cubs) and Sol White (Twins), both had a very good 1901 season. Johnson had six HR, 115 RBI, and hit .281; while White had 12 HR, 90 RBI, and hit .258. Some of the others didn't fare as well, Pete Hill hit .189 in 20 games with Giants, Frank Grant (Royals) hit .378 with 45 AB's, and Clarence Williams with the Senators, did not play at all.

So many homeruns. I take it you are playing with modern settings?

If you started this as a fictional league and you want historically accurate stats, in need to import the settings for the year in the Game Setup-->League Setup-->Strategy page. There you'll see the modifiers for the engine. If you keep the "Automatically adjust league totals" setting checked, then you will see the league evolve statistically in a way similar to real life. I.e., deadball era, more offense/home runs in the 1920s, etc.

I started it as a Historical League using the Gambo DB. And yes, I am using the Automatically Adjust League Totals. I basically follow Garlon's settings that he used in a replay.

On the HR leader board, I see a P. Nadeau hitting 43 HR. I'm assuming this is Phil Nadeau from the PCL? In 17 minor league seasons, Nadeau hit a total of 35 home runs. In two years in the PCL, he hit 1 home run.

You aren't by chance pointing to an older version of the DB, are you? I had this problem once when I was accidentally pointing to a version of the DB for OOTP10.

Nope, it is pointed to the most recent Gambo DB that I downloaded from padre's fan site. It is the Gambo/Spritze DB for OOTP 11 (V3).

The Chicago Cubs, who had baseball's best record (93-61), went all of the way in 1901.

1901 ALCS (4-0): Washington Senators over Chicago White Sox
  • ALCS MVP: SS/2B Bill Keister (WSH)...hit .600 and scored 6 runs
1901 NLCS (4-1): Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals
  • NLCS MVP: 2B Hobe Ferris (CHC)...hit .381 with 5 RBI
1901 World Series (4-2): Chicago Cubs over the Washington Senators
  • World Series MVP: Bill Donovan (CHC)...3 starts, 2-0, 21 strikeouts and 2.77 ERA
...Donovan

I ended up having to play the 1901 season over since I think I was pointed to the wrong historical database. So I decided to use the Spritze database for High School. This means guys will start their careers when they are 18 years old, or even younger.

It also includes many Negro League players, minor league players and later on Asian players.

I am also using a complete minor league system. So even though guys will start their professional careers when they turn 18, they won't necessarily go straight to the majors. For instance, HOF pitcher Ed Walsh started his major league career in IRL in 1904 at age 23. Right now in my dynasty, he just finished the 1901 season with the Pirates Triple A farm team, going 16-11. Whether he makes to the majors before 1904 remains to be seen.

I think this should be fun and interesting to see how this all works out.

The voting for the awards for the inaugural 1901 season are complete. An amazing season for pitcher Roger Denzer, who won both the Outstanding pitcher award and the ROY. At the appropriate time, the Outstanding pitcher will be renamed the Cy Young.

IRL both Denzer and Jocko Flynn didn't do much in the big leagues, but had some big minor league seasons.

I am going to induct players into the HOF after they have been retired 5 years. Some players won't make it since I didn't start until 1901. Even a guy like Cy Young probably will not have the numbers when he retires. He is already 35 years old and has only played for one year!!

The following real HOFers didn't even make it into the dynasty.
  • King Kelly
  • Jim O'Rourke
  • Cap Anson
  • Buck Ewing
  • Old Hoss Radbourn
After I simmed from 1871 until 1901 they had already retired; I then I erased the entire league history, because in this dynasty it never happened.

I will track all real HOF players as I continue along.

Very interesting legue you have going. I been trying to do a historical replay like the one you are doing. Where the Negro league players in the database or do you import them in individually?
