The Atlanta Chiefs (Online League)

This thread will be dedicated to my online team the Atlanta Chiefs, members of the United League Baseball league. The league is a what if league. it is set in 1995 and is started after MLB's strike caused the MLB to disband and the ULB to start with the same players. Each team in the league keeps 2 players from their MLB counterpart and then an inaugural draft was held. This is the story of the Atlanta Chiefs and their journey to becoming the best team the ULB has ever seen.

1995 Chiefs’ Starting Rotation

The Chiefs’ rotation heading into 1995 is a great rotation that should be the strength of the team. The rotation is a good mix of solid experienced vetrens and good young starters. The rotation is led by former Cy Young award winners righty Greg Maddux and lefty Tom Glavine, who are two of the greatest pitchers in the game. This rotation is among the best in the league and should win a lot of games for the Chiefs in 1995

RHP #31 Greg Maddux-28
Drafted: (None Keeper)
1994 Stats: 16-6, 1.56 ERA
Career: 131-91, 3.02 ERA
Scouting Report: Every game Maddux starts is a pitching clinic. Dominant front-line starter.

LHP #47 Tom Glavine- 28
Drafted: (None Keeper)
1994 Stats: 13-9, 3.97 ERA
Career: 108-75, 3.58 ERA
Scouting Report: Glavine looks like an ace to me. He knows what he’s doing on the mound and will simply get the job done.

LHP # 48 Zane Smith-34
Drafted: (6th round, 131 overall)
1994 Stats: 10-8, 3.27 ERA
Career: 88-101, 3.56
Scouting Report: Zane Smith is slightly above average as a starter. He will pick up a few wins. Smith is a streaky guy who needs to be more consistent. Tends to get behind hitters and loses confidenxe when he gets runners on.

RHP # 29 Tyler Green- 24
Drafted: (12th Round, 275 overall)
1994 Stats: 0-0, 7.36 ERA
Career: 0-0, 7.36 ERA
Scouting Reports: Borderline talent right now. I guess he could surprise me if he tightens up his arsenal, but looks like a future fifth starter or long reliever to me.

LHP # 42 Scott Karl- 24
Drafted: (20th Round, 467th overall)
1994 Stats:
Career:
Scouting Report: Maybe more suited to a spot starter role or to eat up a few innings if your team is getting shelled.

Injured:

RHP #55 Orel Hershiser- 36
Drafted: (14th Round, 323 overall)
1994 Stats: 6-6, 3.79 ERA
Career: 134-102, 3.00 ERA
Scouting Reports: A number 3 or 4 starter on most staffs –a useful pitcher, but if he’s your ace, you’re not going to win much
Injury: Torn Elbow Ligament in Spring Training out 10-11 Months

Top Prospects:

LaTroy Hawkins: He should be a middle of the rotation guy at some point in his career

1995 Chiefs’ Bullpen

The Chief bullpen is a very young inexperienced pitchers, but good youngsters. Doug Jones enters into the season as the veteran and closer that is expected to lead the youngsters throughout. The inexperience of this bullpen could prove to be a major weakness, but if they can overcome the lack of experience they have the potential to be a good bullpen.

LHP # 38 Mike Sirotka-23
Drafted: (18th Round, 419 overall)
1994 Stats:
Career:
Scouting Reports: Should one day challenge for the set-up or closer role in a big-league bullpen.

RHP # 54 Terry Adams- 21
Drafted: (16th Round, 371 overall)
1994 Stats:
Career:
Scouting Reports: The right hander should play an important role in a big-league bullpen at some point in his career. Has closer potential.

LHP # 56 Alan Embree-23
Drafted: (19th Round, 446 overall)
1994 Stats: 0-2, 7.00 ERA
Career: 0-2, 7.00 ERA
Scouting Reports: Should one day fill a role in a big-league bullpen. Projects to be a mid-to-long reliever.

RHP # 25 Juan Acevedo-24
Drafted: (26th Round, 611 overall)
1994 Stats:
Career:
Scouting Reports: He will eventually make a big league club. Not spectacular, but a serviceable bullpen guy.

RHP # 54 Joe Hudson-24
Drafted: (23th Round, 542 overall)
1994 Stats:
Career:
Scouting Reports: Above average middle-relief potential.

RHP # 27 Bob Wickman-25
Drafted: (15th Round, 350 overall)
1994 Stats: 5-4, 3.09 ERA, 6 SV
Career: 25-9, 4.11 ERA, 10 SV
Scouting Reports: Graded as an average reliever. He will get you through the middle innings when your starter gets tired early.

RHP # 32 Doug Jones-37
Drafted: (9th Round, 206 overall)
1994 Stats: 2-4, 2.17 ERA, 27 SV
Career: 43-54, 2.99 ERA, 217 SV
Scouting Reports: Jones is a pretty good option out of the pen. Probably not suited to be a set-up man, and really not what you look for in a closer, but a serviceable pitcher. Not every team can be made up of All-Stars.

Top Prospects:

Jay Powell: Projects to be a setup man or rally stopper in the big leagues

Tavo Alvarez: This kid needs to learn another pitch. His repertoire isn’t good enough. His best bet at a big-league career is in long relief

1995 Atlanta Chiefs’ Lineup/Bench Players

The Atlanta Chiefs were able to assemble a good lineup in the draft. The lineup is a good mix of veterans and young players. The lineup is built around veterans Gary DiSarcina, and Rafael Palmeiro as well as youngsters Garret Anderson and Shawn Green. The Chiefs may not have the most potent offense in the Majors but this lineup should be able to support the great pitching staff that they have

Scouting Reports: Berry is an excellent, if not elite, offensive player, who you can count on to have a solid season every year. .290/.340/.500 isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Could hit somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 homeruns and 100 RBIs.

RF # 15 Shawn Green-22
L/L
Drafted: (3th Round, 62 overall)
1994 Stats: .091, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 1 R in 14 games

1994 Stats: .143, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 0 R in 3 games
