New England's Finest: A Pitcher's Tale

Hi all

I gave a dynasty a shot a last year, but I just never really got into it. However, I'm willing to give it another shot this year, with a pitcher. I was inspired, like last time, by Big Six's dynasties.

This will focus on a New England native pitcher, who goes to high school at Phillips Exeter Academy, which is where I went to school. It's not a baseball school- no private New England boarding schools are- but it has had a few MLB players- such as Sam Fuld.

My next post will have the details about him.

I'm using the standard MLB game, with league evolution on, and regular everything else.

"Academy Student Potential Draft Pick?" from the Exonian newspaper

Academy Student Potential Draft Pick? from the Exonian

John Anderson. Many of you know him as the senior in Wentworth, or as the three year captain (and four year MVP) of the Varsity Baseball team. What you might not know is just how good of a baseball player he is. Take a look at his stats, and you'll see what has us raving.

10-0, 0.71 ERA (Earned Run Average), 102.2 innings in 15 starts, 165 strikeouts vs. 19 walks (8.68 K/BB), .74 WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched, .78 FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching).

Anderson was named a Rawlings High School Second Team All American and was named the 23rd best high school prospect. Highlights of his year included a no-hitter against Deerfield Academy, in which he walked one hitter and struck out 12.

Scouts from five different teams, including the Boston Red Sox flocked to his final game, a start against Andover in which he went 8 shutout innings and struck out 16, earning the win in a 5-0 victory over our rivals.

Current mock drafts have Anderson being picked towards the end of the first round or the top of the second. We talked with John earlier this week following his start against Andover...

With the 12th pick of the 2011 MLB First Year Player Draft...

the Los Angeles Angels select left handed pitcher John Anderson, a high schooler out of Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire... June 15th, 2011

With the 12th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, the Los Angeles Angels selected a high school left hander from New England, John Anderson. The Angels hope that Anderson, currently only 17, will develop into the front of the rotation starter that scouts project him to be.

Scouts like Anderson's potential upside, but concerns linger about his ability to help teams in the future. At the young age of 17, he is at least 3 to 4 years from playing in the Major Leagues, and some question the strength of the competition in Anderson's high school league, which is not known for baseball.

Some have questioned whether such a risky pick should be taken so high in the draft, but Anderson does have a very high upside. His fastball has reached 98 mph, and his frame resembles that of other typical power pitchers. He also has a plus curveball, an average slider, and an excellent circle change, which comes in at around 84 mph.

Anderson is committed to UCLA, but a large signing bonus could make him change his mind. He is reported to want approximately $2,000,000, which could be too much for such a young player. However, the Angels have cash to burn.

With their next pick, the Angels took CF Alfredo Vallés out of North Salem High School in NY. His incredible speed...

From: John Anderson (johnnyrocket@ gmail.com)
Subject: Signed!

Hi guys,

We signed my contract today! The Angels offered me two and a half million dollars as a signing bonus, and I took it. Honestly, I would have been happy with a hundred thousand, but my agent, Pierre duPont, kept telling me that I was worth a lot more than that. He showed me how much the guy above me, Carlos Salgado, a Dominican centerfielder, signed for, and said I should get about what he got. So we said no to two offers in the million range, and then got this. Pierre said I could probably get more, but he didn't want to risk me not getting signed, so I said yeah, and I got my deal.

The Angels sent me to their Rookie League team (the lowest minor league level- I know you don't know this stuff mom), the Tempe Angels, who are in the Arizona League. I'm flying there now- I have a start in three days and I need to get to know everyone!

I can't believe it. Getting drafted as high as the Angels took me was incredible, but now I'm actually going to play for them! Granted, it's a minor league team, but whatever! Tempe is a pretty small city, but its still a lot bigger than Dover. It might take some getting used to living here, but I think I might rent an apartment in the city until I see if I can move in with a friend. I've got a lot of money now anyway!

Speaking of which, I'm gonna get you each a gift. Send me requests or whatever, and I'll see what I can do!

I'm so excited! I can't wait! I've been rambling, but whatever!

Love you guys,
Johnny

Play by Play Man: And here’s John Anderson, the 17 year old starting pitcher for Tempe today. He was drafted by the Angels 12th overall this year, and signed with the organization three days ago, on the 11th.
Color Announcer: I like this guy. He pitched incredibly in his high school league, going undefeated and throwing a no hitter earlier this year.
PBP: Such a young player pitching here, am I right?
CA: You sure are. He’s 17 years old. At his age, most teenagers are worrying about getting into college, or girls, or whatever it is kids think about these days. But he’s playing baseball.
PBP: You got drafted out of high school too, right?
CA: Yeah, but I was 18, almost 19. Anderson must have skipped a grade earlier in his school career, which is surprising.
PBP: Here comes the Surprise Royals' first batter, Daniel Mateo. He’s bounced around a couple different leagues this year, heading over to the Appalachian League, and getting called up for a stretch to Single A.
CA: But he’s never been able to gain a foothold anywhere.
PBP: And here is Anderson’s first pitch. It’s a fastball, low and inside for ball one.
CA: Probably not the way he wanted to start his career, but it’s just one pitch.
PBP: Curveball taken for a strike… The third pitch is a ball, outside.
CA: On the 2-1 count, look for Anderson to throw a fastball. You never want to get behind a hitter 3-1.
PBP: You sure don’t. Here’s the pitch… and a fastball by him. He just couldn’t catch up to that one. 96 on the gun.
CA: That’s some great speed there. Now is probably when you throw some sort of change or slow curve, to get the hitter off balance. Even if you miss, you can come back with the blazing fastball next pitch.
PBP: The payoff pitch… Swing and a miss! He goes down on the slow curve. What do you think of that? Nice way for his career to start.
CA: He'll remember that for a while.

PBP: The 2-2 pitch to Adams… it’s in there! 96 mph fastball caught the outside part of the plate, and Adams is done. He’s looking at the umpire, but there’s nothing to argue there.

THIRD INNING
PBP: Sayyid Ramsaur at the plate. He’s leading off the third inning here for the Royals… The first pitch… swung on and lined to left for a single. He got that ball out over the plate and pulled it over the first baseman’s head for a base hit.
CA First hit of the day for Surprise. Also the first hit that Anderson has ever given up. Probably came sooner than he’d like, hahaha.

FOURTH INNING
PBP: Adams leading off the fourth inning. He struck out looking earlier in the ball game…
The 2-2 pitch… curveball in there for strike three. That just buckled Adams’ knees.
CA Adams has to change his approach. That’s two consecutive strike outs looking for him.
PBP:And here is Isaias, the centerfielder…
The 1-2 pitch… Strike out! The slider catches the corner. That’s 5 k’s for Anderson!
PBP: Carrasco up now…
Anderson has him in a hole… it’s 0-2. The pitch… swung on and missed! What a nasty off-speed pitch! He strikes out the side…!

FIFTH INNING
…Leading off the fifth for the Royals is Kulb… the 0-2 pitch is low- did he go? Yes! Four straight strikeouts…
…He blows a fastball by McCaule! Five straight K’s!

SIXTH INNING
CA This is a big moment here. Second and third, only one out.
PBP: And here is Poppe… takes a rip and its driven to right! It gets down and will score both runners! Poppe heading to second.. the throw… Safe! A 2 RBI double for Poppe, and Surprise leads 2-1!

SEVENTH INNING
PBP: The 3-2 pitch… Ball four, and Anderson has walked Herrera to lead off the 7th. And that will be it for Anderson. 10 strikeouts, and he cruised through five, before allowing two hits and three walks in the 6th. Still, not a bad outing, as he allowed only 2 runs, and kept his team in it.

Anderson's team was unable to come back, as they fell 2-1. Anderson's final stat line was 6+ innings, 4 hits, 2 ER, 10 K, 4 BB. He received the loss, and threw 121 pitches, 80 of them for strikes

Los Angeles Scouting Report: John Anderson

Date: September 15th, 2011. Report Compiled by Ric Wilson

Player Name: John Anderson
Age: 18
Team: Cedar Rapids Kernels
Level: Single A
Position: LHP

Season Stats:

Rookie League (Tempe Angels): 1 GS, 0-1, 3.00 ERA, 6 IP, 10 K, 4 BB, 1.33 WHIP
Single A (Cedar Rapids Kernels): 4 GS, 2-0, 2.49 ERA, 25.1 IP, 27 K, 16 BB, 1.42 WHIP

Potential Analysis
Potential quality #2, possibly low end #1 starter... Four quality pitches... Fastball has good movement, been clocked up to 98 mph, consistently sits at 95, 96... 12-6 curveball, nice rotation... Won't throw curve behind in the count... Above average pitch, but hangs it too much... Slider has a lot of potential... Has a good release point, good movement... Circle change is his go-to off-speed pitch... Change reminds me of younger Lincecum... Needs to develop his control... Walks too many batters to be effective, but his control should develop with help... Very athletic, very tall... Lots of stamina...

Personality Report
He's well liked by teammates... Sometimes comes across as aloof or distant... Probably because he's very smart... Hard worker... Spends lots of his time in the ballpark... No problems reported with his behavior... Didn't spend signing bonus on house or cars, etc., like many do...

Recommendation/Development Plan
Has finished 2011 season with Single A team... No promotion at this time... Start 2012 in Single A, see how he does in first few starts, re-evaluate then... Plan: Start 2012 in Single A, promote to Double A early June. No September call-up this year. 2013 start in Triple A, called up to Majors in September. 2014 start season in MLB.

Just a funny fact. The Cubs went up 3-1 in the NLCS over the Rockies, then proceeded to blow the series, losing Game 7 at home 3-1. We got a rematch of the 07 World Series, as the Red Sox won the AL, and the winner was... Boston in 6 games, again celebrating on Coors Field. But the point of this was that OOTP knows that the Cubs are cursed.

Subject: 42 Man Roster

Hey there John,

My name is Collin Powell, and I have taken over the job of Tony Reagins as the General Manager. Tony was fired after this year's dreadful performance, and the Angels chose me to take over. You may have about this already, but I wanted to make sure you knew, as I have some information to give you.

As you may have heard, the MLB just decided to expand the number of players allowed on the secondary roster to 42. As such, we have decided to place you on the now 42 Man Roster, which will have several effects on you. First, your salary will increase to $414,000. Second, there is, as of right now, an excellent chance that you will be invited to Spring Training, so get ready. We do not expect you to make the team this year, however. Instead, we hope to start you at Double A and see how the season goes. This is a change in our plans from earlier, which had you staying at Single A to start the season. Hopefully this doesn't upset you- and it's hard to imagine why it would.

Congratulations,

Collin Powell
General Manager of the Los Angeles Angels

Subject: First Spring Training Start!

Hey guys!

I'm gonna get my first start today against the Royals! It's Spring Training, but it's still something! I'll probably pitch a couple innings, but it should be fun!

Anyway I have to go. I love you guys!

Johnny

John would go 4 innings in his start, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 2 batters, and earned the win as the Angels won 6-4. He made 5 more appearances in Spring Training, all in relief, finishing with a 2-0 record, a 3.68 ERA, and 11 K in 9.2 innings. However, he also walked 14. He started the season as the #1 for the Arkansas Travelers of the Double A Texas League

Gah My Bullpen...

Date: 7/1/2012
From: John Anderson (johnnyrocket@ gmail.com)
To: Anderson Family (afam@ gmail.com)
Subject: Gah My Bullpen...

Hi guys,

It happened again... I pitched a great game against Springfield, and then my bullpen blew the lead. Yesterday I pitched 8 shutout innings, but my team could buy a run. Then, in the top of the 9th, Sergio, a buddy of mine (he's 28, not too smart, and probably won't ever make it anywhere in the big leagues but he's still a great guy) blasted a home run to center. At this point I was thinking Yes! Finally! but no my coach sent in Adam Miller. None of us know him well- he was just demoted here from Triple A because he's not very good- and he went in and walked two batters, threw a wild pitch, then served up a fastball right down the middle to their best hitter, and he whacked it over the fence. I'd struck him out twice before, and I wasn't tired, even though I'd thrown about 110 pitches, but coach had to pull me. "It's not about winning games, it's about getting you ready for the bigs," he said. I guess it is, but even still, it sucks... I didn't even walk anyone today!

I guess I sound really selfish right now, but I'm just not happy. I've done really well recently, and I feel like I deserve to be moved to AAA. But whatever. I have a couple days off until my next start, and I'm gonna try to forget all about it now.

Love you,
Johnny

John pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 7. He walked none, and picked a runner off of first base. Despite his upsetness about the bullpen, he's only had two games blown. Admittedly, they have been his past two starts. He was named to the All-Star team despite a rough start to the season, and in the game he pitched a perfect inning, striking out one. He currently has a 5-5 record, with 3.59 ERA in 16 starts. He has pitched 115.1 innings, struck out 105, and walked 38. The Angels, the major league team, are 2 games behind the Rangers at the midway point of the season. It seems likely that he will be moved to AAA soon, probably when the rosters expand. However, as he is on the 42 man roster, he may get called up to the big leagues.

Transcript of Phone Conversation between Collin Powell (Angels GM) and Bill Mosiello (Arkansas Travelers Manager). August 23, 2012.

...
Collin Powell: Hey Bill
Bill Mosiello: Hello Collin
CP: So, John Anderson. Tell me about him.
BM: He's tearing it up right now. I'm surprised you haven't called him up to Triple A yet...? Are you going to?
CP: Possibly. He's starting today, correct?
BM: Yeah. Against Tulsa.
CP: This could be his last Double A start. I'll re-evaluate after the game, but looking at how he's done recently, he needs to be in a higher level.
BM: I'm totally with you. He's a great kid, and I love coaching him, but he just shouldn't be at this level right now. He's so much better.
CP: Exactly. I'm going to talk to the scouts soon, and see what they say, but I think this is what needs to be done for us, and for the him. Sorry that I'll be taking him away from the pennant race though.
BM: Hah, you do that every year. There's always someone who we need, who's too good and gets called up. I'm used to it. It's nothing personal.
CP: Alright. I'll talk to you after the game. Good luck.
BM: Alright. Adios

John didn't disappoint. He threw a complete game shutout, allowing two hits and walking one, while striking fourteen, a Travelers record. Soon after the game, he was called up to AAA Salt Lake, of the Pacific Coast League. His next start is presumable five games in the future. DISCLAIMER: I wrote this conversation after the game, after he was promoted. So yeah. That

Well I've seen lots of dynasties lately which have used Twitter and blogs effectively, and I've decided to hop on the bandwagon. I mean, what athlete doesn't have a Twitter these days? (A lot, but that's irrelevant) Now John has a new twitter, @johnnyrocket. NOTE: It's fictional. There may be a real @johnnyrocket out there, but I didn't make one. It's not a real Twitter account. Not that anyone would make that mistake... *cough* me.

After two starts in AAA, which didn't go so well (0-1, 5.17 ERA), John was sent down to AA for the playoffs, where he would receive the ball in the first game for the Arkansas Travelers...

Game call from LAMinors, 96.7

Hello and welcome to the first game of the 2012 Texas League Playoffs. Today, we have a match-up between the Arkansas Travelers and Midland Rock Hounds, featuring two excellent pitchers who could make an appearance in the Major Leagues sooner rather than later. John Anderson and Jacob Brigham... We'll see Anderson first, as the Travelers have the home field advantage this round...

.....................

The 1-2 to Gabriel Ortiz... Fastball swing and a miss! Nice pitch by Anderson, down and away. That's two outs now, here in the first...

.....................

Runner on first with two outs as Anderson stands in the stretch. 0-1 is the count. The pitch... it's a nubber out in front of the plate. Pardo out from behind the plate to grab it, and he throws to first to end the frame. No runs, no hits, no errors, and a runner left on base as the top of the first rolls to an end...

.....................

One out now for Anderson, with a runner on first base. He stands in the stretch, staring down Wilfred Solano. The 3-1 pitch... Solano swings, and hits a hard ground ball to short... This could be two! To second... and on to first! And the inning is over. To the bottom of the second we go!

.....................

Two balls, two strikes, two outs, here in the top of the fifth. Nobody on, and Jermaine Mitchell stands in against Anderson.... The Travelers hold a 3-0 lead here... And the pitch... A curveball swung on and missed for strike three! Five shutout innings for Anderson.

.....................

Here we go in the eighth inning. 4-0 Arkansas. Anderson with 9 strikeouts, 4 walks so far...
The 1-2 pitch to Nunez... Swung on and missed! 10 strikeouts! What a slider!...
Now Mitchell has two quick strikes on him. Anderson probably looking to put him away quickly... The windup and the pitch... Fastball over for strike three! 11 strikeouts! But Anderson is up around 120 pitches now...
Two outs in the eighth, and Choice batting. He has a full count on him... The payoff pitch from Anderson... Curveball swung on and missed! 12 k's! What a game! That will probably be it for Anderson, as he has thrown 126 pitches! He walks off the field to heavy applause!

The Travelers won 6-0. Anderson received the win with 8 shutout innings, striking out 12 and walking 4. He gave up only 1 hit the entire game, and the Travelers took a 1-0 series lead. They would win the game 5-4 and lose the third game by the same score, 5-4. In the fourth game, Arkansas won 12-2 to win the series and advance to the finals, against Northwest Arkansas. Northwest Arkansas won Game Five in 14 innings after tying the game in the 9th with a two out home run. Anderson would get the start in the first game.

Hey guys,

So obviously I'm disappointed we lost, but whatever. I had a pretty sick playoff run. I just... I won both of our games in the finals. Game One and Game Five. But whatever. It's the offseason now. I'm gonna fly back home pretty soon. I can't wait to see you all! I might go visit Exeter- I want to see Coach Bill again. Also, I want to play some hockey again. Although the Angels would kill me if I did anything to myself... So I might not do that. Coach Mosiello gave me a workout plan- it seems pretty basic. Looks a lot like what I did at Exeter, only with heavier weights.

We're having a team dinner tomorrow night, and Coach said that I actually had a good shot at winning the pitching award for the Texas League. I don't want to toot my own horn, but I did have some nice stats. Lead the league in innings and strikeouts I think...

Anyway, I'll see you guys home. Me and some of the guys are heading to a team party. I promise I won't drink- a lot of us can't anyway.

Bye,
Johnny

Arkansas lost to Northwest Arkansas 12-3 in Game Six, losing the series 4-2. John won both of his starts, finishing the playoffs with a 3-0 record and a 2.31 ERA. He struck out 30 and walked 6, in 23.1 innings. We'll see what happens with the league awards, but one thing is almost certain- he's not going anywhere this season. He would have been called up to the pros already, and AAA is near done with their playoffs as well. I'll do a season recap after the MLB season concludes.

MLB Season Recap

At the conclusion of the MLB Regular Season, both the San Francisco Giants (with 108) and the Texas Rangers (with 101) had over 100 wins. Other divisions were won by Cleveland, who, with 96 wins, had the only winning record in the AL Central, the Milwaukee Brewers, who finished with 91 wins and 7 games up on the second place Cubs, and the Washington Nationals (!), who finished with 92 wins and an 8 game lead. In the AL East, both Toronto and Boston finished with identical 98-64 records, and so a one game playoff was held to determine who would win the division and who would earn the wild card. In the NL, the Colorado Rockies earned the wild car with an incredible 99 win season, which would have put them in first in any non-Western Division.

In the one game playoff, Boston jumped out to a 7-0 lead heading into the 7th inning, but Toronto began to mount a comeback, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the eighth. In the ninth inning, Toronto had runners on second and third, but were unable to score, and so fell 7-5.

The Division Series were very competitive, as all but one series went five games. The Red Sox knocked off the Indians, winning Game Five on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th inning. Texas barely survived Toronto, winning all three games at home by fewer than two runs, and being blown out twice in Toronto. Out in the National League, the Rockies swept the Nationals out of the playoffs, behind three dominant pitching performances. In the final series, the Brewers surprised the baseball world by knocking off the Giants in a tense series. Game Five was won by a complete game, 9 K effort from Shaun Marcum, who shut out the Giants.

In the ALCS, the Texas Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 series lead over the Red Sox at home, before losing in three consecutive walk off wins by the Red Sox. Adrian Gonzalez supplied two of the wins, with a walk off 2 run home run in Game Four and a sacrifice fly in the 9th of Game Five. However, the Red Sox were unable to build on this momentum as they lost the next two games in Texas, 7-6 and 5-1.

The Brewers won the ALCS in 7 games as Zach Greinke won Game One, Four, and Seven. He allowed 5 (3 earned) runs in 22 innings over that span, striking out 27. In Game Seven, Greinke pitched 8 innings and allowed one earned run, while striking out 13.

The Brewers and the Rangers met in the World Series, and the Rangers easily dealt with Milwaukee in a four game sweep. Milwaukee's pitching was overpowered by the depth of the Texas line-up, anchored by Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, and Ian Kinsler. In Game Three, Texas lit up Greinke for 7 runs on 8 hits in only 3+ innings, and finished with 13 runs and 23 hits. Game Four was over in the first, as Texas jumped out to a four run lead from which Milwaukee could not recover. Texas won the 2012 World Series!

Josh Hamilton led the AL with a .345 batting average, and Adrian Gonzalez led the other two triple crown categories with 45 home runs and 149 RBI. Elvin Andrus stole 74 bases. Hamilton had a WAR of 8.8, 2.2 runs better than the runner up, Prince Fielder (Indians).

Justin Masterson (Indians) lead the AL in wins with 20, while Rich Harden (Boston) lead in strikeouts with 224. The top ERA was claimed by Brandon Webb (Texas), who finished with an ERA of 3.249, slightly better than Felix Hernandez's 3.253.

The AL MVP was Josh Hamilton, and the Cy Young was Justin Masterson. The Rookie of the Year was Toronto's David F. Cooper, a 25 year old 1B, who batted .317 with 22 HR.

The National League will come later.

But first: Two rule changes! The season will be 168 games long now, and the waiver period length is now 2 days. More later!

In the National League, third year player Jason Heyward returned from a fractured thumb suffered in the fourth game of the season to bat .347 with 175 hits over the rest of the year. He would also set career highs in home runs and RBIs, but was nowhere near the league leader in those. He narrowly beat out Brian McCann (.342) and Yadier Molina (.340) for first place in average.

Ryan Howard crushed 51 home runs and 147 RBI, leading the league in both categories. Albert Pujols, who signed a three year contract with the Rockies in the offseason (note- unfortunately I started this league before the patch, and before I realized something was wrong with contracts. I have now edited the financials to fix it, but the first offseason players signed for very low totals), finished second with 49, and Tulowitzki hit 42. No other NL player hit 40.

Tulowitzki also added a .327 average and 25 stolen bases as he finished with a 10.4 WAR and ran away with the National League MVP.

Matt Cain led NL pitchers in wins with 21, and Brian Wilson had 53 saves, as the Giants had one of the most dominant pitching staffs in baseball.

Adam Wainwright had a 2.31 ERA, good for tops in the NL, while Strasburg struck out 286 in his first full season.

Adam Wainwright won the National League Cy Young Award with a 20-8 record in addition to his 2.31 ERA. He struck out 196 and walked only 56.

The Rookie of the Year Award was won by 26 year old SS Josh Mazzola, who put up a .309 average with 28 HR and 111 RBI.

That concludes the season recap. We will now return to John.

John won the 2012 Texas League Pitcher of the Year Award on October 3rd. And now, back to the season...

Being part of the 40 Man Roster, John was invited to the team meeting on the 20th of February, hosted by the new GM Collin Powell. The meeting took place on the first day of the pre-season, when the Angels had finished making moves.

John spent the offseason working out at home and spending time with his family. He also spent a lot of time talking with Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher, who worked with him on his control, one of the major problems with Anderson's pitching...

"Hey everyone, glad you could come." Collin stood at the front of the Angels clubhouse. "This is new. I want everyone to meet each other."

John looked around at the faces surrounding him. Familiar names were gone- Torii Hunter, Jered Weaver, Maicer Izturis, and Erik Aybar had all left in free agency. New faces had joined the team, making it nearly unrecognizable as the Angels team which had drafted him. Brad Hawpe sat in the front row, next to Brian Roberts, the two top off-season acquisitions for the Angels. Joe Blanton was now a part of the pitching staff, having signed a 4 year, 20 million dollar deal. Lyle Overbay, the final "name" acquisition, was at the far right of the bench in the back, sitting next to Kendry Morales. Clearly they had already met, John thought.

"As you can see, I've made some serious changes. I mean no offense to the returning players, but the past three years have been completely unacceptable. Third place is not where this team belongs. We are better than that. So I'm putting this out there right now. We need to win, and win now. We have the stars, we have the coaches, we have the fans. But you need to perform. I will do everything I can to make this team even better than it is now, but that might not happen. Get used to each other, as this will be the team." Collin finished, and stood silently at the front for a moment.

"Now, I want anyone who has never played with the Angels major league team to come to the front of the room."

John stood up. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Mike Trout stand as well. Although he wasn't particularly close to Mike, at least they knew each other, and were nearly the same age.

"Men, look at these players who are seated. They've established themselves. Can you do the same? I'm done now. The rest of the night is yours. Ervin, if you will?"

Ervin Santana, the longest tenured Angel, stood up. "Alright guys, I want you newbies to line up according to position. Pitchers on the left, batters on the right. Then state your position and your name, and the best restaurant you've ever eaten at."

John was first. "Hi everyone. My name is John Anderson- call me Johnny, please- I'm a starting pitcher, and... ummm.... I love Bertucci's Pizza, if there's anyone from New England here?" *cricket* "Well it's awesome pizza... I'll take you if we go to Boston...?" *cricket* "Uh... yeah..., so..." The assembled players sat in silence, staring with blank faces. "...Did I do something wrong...?:

Ervin burst out laughing. "Relax, Johnny. Congrats on being first, you got your hazing out of the way early."

John smiled awkwardly. "...Yeah..."

"Next!"
