From Tony C's Comeback & Expansion to ??? - The 1969(+) Boston Red Sox

In August of 1967 this happened then after taking all of 1968 off, Tony Conigliaro is making a comeback.

This is also the new era of expansion as the major league has expanded to 24 teams with the Seattle Pilots, Kansas City Royals, Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres entering their inaugural season.



(I've decided to join in and jump on the 1969 bandwagon started by Big T (expos) and then seconded by PhillieFever (phillies).)

Boston Red Sox Outlook for 1969 (by Baseball Digest)

Boston lacks quality pitching

A lot depends on the return of Tony Conigliaro, but without him the Boston Red Sox don't figure to make much of a splash in the Eastern Division race.

Even with Conigliaro, sidelined since August 1967 with an eye injury, the Red Sox would have to count on overpowering the opposition. They just don't have the solid pitching required of a major contender.

Conigliaro isn't the only Red Sox who's trying to snap back from injury. Shortstop Rico Petrocelli also suffered last year, and reportedly still has a lame throwing arm. Then there's Jim Lonborg, who broke his leg in a skiing accident in late 1967. As a result, he slumped from 22 victories in the pennant-winning year of 1967 to only six last season when Boston finished fourth.

The strongest part of the Red Sox, if Conigliaro can make it back, would be the outfield. Carl Yastrzemski (.301, 23, 74) may have been a cheese champion with his batting title being won on the lowest percentage in baseball history. But everybody knows he can do far better and probably will in 1969.

Yaz takes care of left field and centerfield is almost as well handled by Reggie Smith (.265, 15, 70), who is still developing both as a hitter and outfielder.

Conigliaro could solve any rightfield problem if he has regained full vision. If not, there may be a scramble. Ken Harrelson (.275, 35, 109) preferably should be at first because of his fielding inadequacies but could move to right. He's coming off a great year with the bat and there's no doubt he provides Boston manager Dick Williams with support for Yaz in the batting order.

Williams seems to think that an acceptable alternative in right would be Joe Lahoud (.273, 8, 42 at Louisville), a rookie.

The reserve strength isn't bad either. There are George Thomas (.288, 6, 52 at Louisville), who has been around and Jose Tartabull (.281, 0, 6).

In the infield, the picture is fine at the corners, with Harrelson the first baseman and George Scott moving to third as a replacement for drafted Joe Foy. Scott (.171, 3, 25) has played third before and should snap back from his poor year at bat. After all, he hit .303, with 19 home runs and 8w RBI in 1967.

Petrocelli's arm is a problem. Petrocelli (.234, 12, 46) and Mike Andrews (.271, 7, 45) at second give the Red Sox an excellent double play combination when healthy. If Petrocelli is unavailable for full-time work, the shortstop job might go to Luis Alcarado (.257, 0, 29 at Pittsfield) or Syd O'Brien (.263, 12, 60 at Louisville).

Dalton Jones, as in the past, will be available for pinch-hitting and fill in at third or second.

The Red Sox don't have the strongest catching in the league. Russ Gibson (.225, 3, 20) figures to do most of the work, with Gerry Moses and Carlton Fisk, two youngsters, taking turns as backup men.

Lonborg (6-10, 4.30) must make a comeback if the Red Sox are to do anything startling. They were a little lucky last year to get tremendous seasons out of two National League castoffs in Ray Culp and Dick Ellsworth. Culp (16-6, 2.92) and Ellsworth (16-7, 3.03) will be available again, but are not likely to repeat.

Jerry Stephenson (12-7, 3.37) figures to be the fourth starter and Jose Santiago (9-4, 2.25) also is in there if his arm is 100 per cent.

Sparky Lyle (6-1, 2.73) may be the workhorse of the bullpen.

The Red Sox have too many ifs to be rated as serious contenders. Try them in third place.

If there's one thing that this team has is the bats. Like mostly every other season, the offense has to carry the team because the pitching always seemed to take a back seat to the bats.

Welcome aboard my usual Red Sox time machine as we go back to the first year after rules changes that came about due to the "Year of the Pitcher", 1968.

Yes, those predictions came straight from Baseball Digest's April 1969 issue as did the team's outlook.

I'm looking forward to seeing if Tony C. can comeback to what he did in RL before the vision problems returned. I'm also sure that he will be "air conditioning" all of the AL ballparks.

I have the '69 Senators as one of my teams that I had selected in my first baseball game, Strat-O-Matic. I ordered six teams in a selector set: Red Sox, Indians, Senators, Mets, Braves, Cardinals.

Washington has a good 1-2 hitting punch with Frank Howard and Mike Epstein with third baseman Ken McMullen also providing some punch. Pitcher Dick Bosman was the AL ERA leader that year and Joe Coleman was a better pitcher than his 12-13 record would suggest. Their bullpen was average and was led by Darold Knowles, Denny Higgins and swingman Casey Cox. Their defense wasn't all that bad. They had a pretty good left side with third baseman Ken McMullen and shortstop Eddie Brinkman. Their up-the-middle defense, one of the key ingredients IMO of a contender or title winner, I think was under rated with Paul Casanova, Bernie Allen, Eddie Brinkman and Del Unser.
