THE Cooperstown League
About 120 years of baseball. If the world would end tomorrow what story would be told of the game, and which names and teams would prove to be the best? If every franchise could choose their best player to ever play each position who would be the best? There are so many angles to look at a season like this from, so many questions to be answered. The rules and the game itself have almost not changed at all for 100 years, so comparisions and equality are very real across the generations. I have revamped the divisions and eliminated franchises that really dont have a chance due mostly to their limited history. Sou four teams will be left out and a reallingment of the existing divisions was created. The teams left out are:
**All greats from these teams past should find homes on other teams as most players have played for multiple franchises. The only exception I could find in this was that of Tony Gwynn. With Gwynn I decided to put him on the WEAKEST francises I had that was left, so to me this was the LA Angels who lacked the most talent in my estimation. So Gwyn will join the Angels. The reallinged divisions AL EAST
**All other teams will incude any teams that they used to be before relocating to their cuirrent city. So for example the Braves history inlcudes Boston/Milwaukee and Atlanta. Trades are turned off for the first season and a balanced schedule is used with division winners and a wild card coming out of each league. Interleague play is alowed and a dynamic storyline will be followed. Injuries are on so teams and their depth will surely come into play. Dynamic stories will also be allowed. Also some teams have very interesting position battles as many greats are fighting for a starting job. For this reason spring training will be enabled, so we will see who will win the starting job by winning out in the spring. Also note a player who played with a team for the majority of his career will almost always be with that team, however in some cases players were moved to teams they played for a limited time with, this is the case in order to make the league more competitive. Reggie Jackson is one example. he most likely will be playing for the Angels instead of the Yankees or Athletics who have many more options to fill his spot. The Rivalries
With the Cooperstown season ready to begin and the greatest to ever play taking the field, the rivalries and direct challenges to some fo baseball's deepest questions are ready to be answered. Here are some of the most intriguing rivalries as the season starts: BABE RUTH vs BARRY BONDS Who really is the home run king? Barry Bonds has all the questions of PED looming over his head but on a baseball field only one man can really rival him, and that would be King Ruth. Ruth and Bonds will battle for the true single season home run record and with one being so beloved and the other being so dispised, the rivalry is truly galactic. TY COBB vs PETE ROSE With their personalities being so over the top and their confidence being so high, these two players will literly fight for every win. The two of them will be among the leaders in hits for the season and Cobb definately is out to prove that he will win the batting title and prove that Rose was not the player he was. Make no mistake, both of these men would run over their mothers if they had a chance to take an extra base. RICKEY HENDERSON vs LOU BROCK When Rickey broke the record for career stolen bases he said with confidence that he was the greatest of all time. Now Henderson will have to put his words to the test as Lou Brock will have his chance to outsteal him. Henderson will have a stiff challenge not just from Brock, but from Cobb and others like Maury Wills. Who is the real Man of Steal? WALTER JOHNSON vs NOLAN RYAN Who is the hardest thrower to ever pitch and who is the ultimate intimidator? A number of pitchers will have a ton of strikeouts, but it seems as if Ryan and Johnson are the two legends that did it better then anyone and revolutionized the craft. Does Johnson throw hard enough to compete in the modern era? |

ED WALSH ONE HITS YANKEES!
NY Yankees 0 Chicago White Sox 1 The Cooperstown League began play today at Comiskey Park in Chicago on a cold afternoon where the tempature barely reached 40 degrees. All of the hype was to see the vaunted New York Yankees for the first time and Ed Walsh of the White Sox had the task of beating them. A Don Mattingly single in the first inning was the only scratch of the game for a lineup that had Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle. Walsh would strike out eight and face 28 hitters in a brilliant performance that had New York literally out in the cold. Whitey Ford for the Yankees also had a strong effort against the Sox and kept a shutout going before Sox outfielder Harold Baines took a fast ball through the cold air and gave the home team a one run lead with a home run. Walsh competed his effort with a one hitter in maybe the most improbable start to this season. |

Opening Day In Cooperstown League Did Not Disappoint
Monday April 6th There were big hits and dramatic finishes as the Cooperstown League opened in the style around the country. Ed Walsh was still the master of the mound with his one hitter but other games captured the imagination in what is sure to be a dynamic season. Cleon Jones Walk Off The Mets opened the season by coming from behind th beat the LA Angels in their last at bat. The hero of the night was Mets outfielder Cleon Jones who hit a walk off two run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning off of Troy Percicval with his team trailing by a run. Jim Edmonds had given the Angels a one run lead with a home run in the 11th but the lead would not hold up as the Mets completed their 18 hit attack and pulled it off in the ninth. Seaver 15 K's The Mets were lead by their ace Tom Seaver who pitched 10 innings and struck out 15 Angels in the process. A gutsy effort by Seaver that will set the standard for the remainder of the season. Boone Drives In Five as Mariners Sink Tigers Brett Boone isnt the most feared man in the Mariner lineup but the second baseman had a great opening day leading the home team to a 7-3 win. Boone homered off Justin Verlander and was a big part of a five run inning that turned the game around. Ty Cobb went 0-4 against Randy Johnson but did drive in a run. DelGado The Difference Carlos DelGado smashed a two run home run at the Metrodome which was the only runs of the game in a good pitching duel to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 opening win. Roy Halladay allowed only three hits going the distance while Bert Blylaven had a good start as well but his one mistake in the third inning proved to be the difference. Code:

Tuesday April 7
Yankees Break Out In Drubbing Of Sox The New York Yankees came out in a big way to make all forget their shutout on opening day as they scored 16 runs and beat the White Sox and Mark Buehrle 16-2. The Yankees were paced by Babe Ruth who went 4-5 with three doubles and four RBI while Thurman Munson contributed a grand slam. The Yankees scored seven runs in the second inning knocking Buehrle out of the game and pacing Ron Guidry to an easy win. The Yankees scored 16 runs on 16 hits and showed why the dominance of Ed Walsh was indeed so impresive on opening day. Mets Walk Off In 11th For Second Win Howard Johnson sent Met fans home happy as he hit a dramatic two run home run off Troy Pervical to in the 11th inning with a man on to give the Mets a one run lead. Wally Joyner had given the visitors the lead in the top of the 11th with a home run but Johnson had his moment of dramatics to give the Mets their second win. Darryl Strawberry already showed his colors as he and manager Casey Stengel were ejected from the game for disputing a call in the 6th inning. The Mets have been paced by Jose Reyes at the top of the lineup who went 3-5 today and stole a base. Marichal Falters In Big 9th For Nats Juan Marichal isnt suppose to tire while throwing in the late innings but at the Polo Grounds today the hard throwing star was part of a Giants effort that allowed 9 runs in the ninth inning to fall 13-6 to the Washington Nationals. Good enough for Cooperstown League? The Nationals were lead by Alfonso Soriano who drove in four runs on 3 hits and is trying to silence the critics that said he was well in over his head at this level. The Nats remain one of the most talented teams in the league and their pitching, lead by Dave Martinez in this one, held Barry Bonds to 1 hit in his first nine atbats. Code:

Orioles Score 20 In Win The Baltimore Orioles were in no mood in getting swept in the opening series of the season especially while playing at home. The Orioles wasted no time at Camden Yards on this night against Texas and had 10 runs after only two innings. Baltimore would smash five home runs on this night and would end with 18 hits and 20 runs. Roy Oswalt was the pitcher on the mound for Texas that had very little and allowed eight runs in 1.3 innings pitched. Eddie Murray hit two home runs and drove in three while Brooks Robinson went 4-6 with two RBI of his own. Mike Cueller didnt have great stuff for the Orioles either and left the game in the third inning, he had 20 runs scored by his offense and didnt get the win. McGwire Slams A's To Win The Kansas City Royals had nowhere to put Mark McGwire in the 11th inning of their game with the Oakland A's. McGwire came up with the bases loaded and Joakim Soria came at him with a fastball. McGwire drilled the pitch out over the left field wall and the A's won a tight game to take the rubber game of this series. Rickey Henderson scored three runs and drove in another two while Ed Joost walked three times and also went deep. Vida Blue and Kevin Appier didnt have much of their stuff and the battle in this one came down to the bullpens which went the way of Oakland. On a side note Jose Canseco is batting .600 and is the best after the first three games of the season. Mitch Williams Takes Over Closer Role The Philadelphia Phillies had to make some changes to their bullpen plans due to an injury this week. Brad Lidge the closer for the Phils will miss close to two months with a slight tear in his shoulder and manager Gene Mauch will have to replace him. Williams the new closer Mitch Williams is the man for the job currently getting it over Steve Bedrosian. Williams will have his chance and we will see if he lives up to his billing of the "Wild Thing" moving forward. The Phillies have started their season 1-2 after losing to the Cubs. Code:

Thursday April 9
Red Sox Show Muscle Just as the Yankees did yesturday, the Boston Red Sox broke out their bats and won a big game in Kansas City 17-8 behind 20 hits. Big Papi David Ortiz went 3-6 with 6 RBI inlcuding a grand slam. Ortiz 6 RBI Wade Boggs also rerouted a slow start going 5-6 and scoring three runs proving that his bat is just fine. Through the first four games of the season for the Sox however the leader at the plate is none other then Bobby Doerr who is hitting .667 with 10 hits in 15 at bats. "It is so easy to hit in this lineup" said Doerr after the statement win by the Sox. Caldwell One Hitter Mike Caldwell of the Milwuakee Brewers made the most of his spot start on Thursday against the New York Mets and had everyone watching. Caldwell had a no hitter going into the into the 8th inning before Bobby Bonila finally doubled to break the drama. Bonilla would later score but the Brewers were able to hand the Mets their first loss of the season. Gorman Thomas hit a three run home run to pace Caldwell as the big center fielder can hit a fastball a long way as Jerry Koosman found out. Grudge Series in Motown No series has more attention then the Yankees weekend series at Tiger Stadium against the Tigers. Joe DiMaggio had his best game of the short season going 3-5 with a go ahead home run as the Yankees scored four runs in the last two innings to take game one of this series. Everyone knows that Ty Cobb has it in for Ruth and the Yankees and when the centerfielder hit a two run home run in the sixth inning off Andy Pettite, it looked as it may have been his night. The Yankees however came and bit Denny McLain late as Billy Martin decided not to go to his bullpen earlier. Code:

Friday April 10
Shutouts Sparkle Day Two impressive shutouts were the highlights of this Friday in the Cooperstown League. Tom Seaver suprizes no one with his strong performances and on this night against the Milwuakee Brewers, Seaver made sure he earned his first win in a 10-0 Mets romp. Seaver struck out nine and walked only one as he had it all going including offensive support as the Mets up their record to 3-2. In another even more impressive performance came from Twins starter Frank Viola who made his first start of the season. Viola was a question to whether he would even make the Twins rotation stepped up against the Indians. Viola allowed only two hits to the Indians who everyone knows has a very potent offense. If Viola puts together a good string, the Twins could really be a power in the AL West. Reds Sting Giants The Cincinnati Reds introduced themselves to Giants closer Rod Beck. The Reds who were down three runs heading into the top of the ninth inning, put together a big inning and knock off the Giants by an 8-7 final. Kluszewski with 4 RBI Ted Kluszewski had a big game including a three run home run off Beck in the 9th inning, his second of the season, to finish the game with four RBI. The Giants will have to closer look at their closer role as they are sure to have close games that they just need to close out. The Reds did end the game with 16 hits in total. Red Sox Continue To Roll The Boston Red Sox are the hottest hitting team in the league as they put aside Bret Saberhagen and the Royals 11-3. The Red Sox had 18 hits on the night, this coming off of a 20 hit game yesterday to really impress. The Sox are hitting through out their lineup and have a .333 average for the young season. Great concept, and I love how you have organized it.
One question, how did you import the players? More specifically, did you choose a peak season to import or try to pick an average season or did you somehow create a composite career total to base the ratings? |

The template for the league is already included in all OOTP versions. Just go to quick starts and it will be there. I did make some tweeks and changed the rosters to my liking, but the rosters are pretty complete and all the settings are already there. I believe that all players are playing at their peak. |

DOH! (Where's that Homer Simpson emoticon when you need it?) How did I miss this quick start? I used to do a similar thing with Tony LaRussa Baseball back in the day, but I had to key in all of the data to create the players. This sure looks easier. Your idea to organize the two Texas teams into one is great. I think Tony Gwynn on the Angels fits really well too. As a Cardinals fan, I have to nit-pick your choice of Andujar over Bob Forsch. However, you are right on to put Brock in CF given the corner outfield choices. I always used Slaughter in right and Musial in left, but getting Medwick into the lineup is a good call to give them another RH bat. ** I have derailed your thread enough, but I will be reading. ** EDIT: It just dawned on me that these were probably the AI's choices and not yours. Still interesting. Last edited by Orcin; 02-03-2012 at 09:00 AM. |
