Offseason 1903-1904: Minor Moves
No leagues fails, though there was the usual Classification wide movement. The Old Line League is formed as a Class E circuit with clubs in PA-MD-VA.
The Big South Association, whittled to 3 teams at one point in the winter, presses into action a second team in both Nashville and Knoxville. Towns with two Lower Classification clubs were not uncommon prior to the 1920 season when territory exclusivity was established. 1904
Seeing the success of the 7 game National Championship, the Lower Classifications move to allow longer series. Teams can participate in a maximum of 8 postseason games.
The club owners agree, with little public notice, to no longer award multi-year contracts. These contracts were only given to 'star' performers, but they were no longer considered good business. At the Winter Convention a meeting of baseball writers from various cities resulted in the formation of the Professional Baseball Newspaperman Association (PBNA). The PBNA quickly became a force in the game. With attendance and year end profits falling, especially in the smaller cities of the leagues, the FA and CF saw an opportunity. The owners put PBNA affiliated writers in the best seats and encouraged players and managers to give PBNA members preference. The privileges given to the PBNA writers lead to a even larger growth in the organization. The greatest immediate effect was a change in the tenor of baseball coverage across the county. Outside of Chicago and New York most papers would focus on only the local club. Coverage began to take more of a national approach to reporting. Even down to the Lower Classification cities, an astute baseball writer was supposed to be schooled in the Class A leagues, as well as whatever circuit the local club was in that particular season. The general feeling around baseball was it would be an all-Chicago National Championship. The Tigers were expected to be lead by CF Armando Bustamante (.339, 24 2B , 18 3B, 84 RBI, 83 R in 03), but 1903 was his first relative healthy season, and first triple crown hitter, 1B Graham Klippel. Big things are expected from the trio of Ralph Ersek (13-14, 2.89, 97 K in 03), Michael Faithful (15-16, 2.61, 99 K in 03) and Jorah Brobst (17-11, 2.22, 91 K in 03). Brosbt had the best overall numbers in 03, but he did little in 10 starts after being traded to Chicago by Washington. The Cardinals were said to have constructed of the greatest pitching staffs in the history of organized baseball. Leo Rusco (21-12, 2.41, 170 K in 03) and Giels Widelski (20-13, 2.28, 160 and the first no-hitter in organized baseball in 03) will anchor the Cardinals for years to come. However, at 39, Catseye Kozdron hasn't been good since 1898 and no winning record since 1896 and Yorvit Severiano lost 23 between Baltimore and Chicago. On the offensive side, C Jered Rathje may be growing into the best catcher in baseball. Philadelphia made the big splash by acquiring OF Tormmund Bangham (career: 287/361/404) from Buffalo. Tormmund has hit in the 4 slot for Buffalo the last couple years. He cost a possible superstar hitter in Nickie Marszalkowski (276/329/429, 10 2B, 13 3B in a half season with the Eagles), but the Eagles outfield needed something. George Positano (287/327/368 in 03) hasn't been the same player since back problems hit him in 02 and Jorge Claveria struggled to his worst season ever. The Eagles offense has been middle of the pack the last couple years, and as sluggish as offense has been the last several seasons, every little bit helps. |

1904
End of April
4/12 The Chicago Tigers were out to a good start (6-1) but it was the offense carrying the load. They pluck longtime Celts starter Estevon “The Wolverine” Manquero for a little used infielder of some promise. Manquaro (187-157, 2.90, 1100 K career) has been a bit wild in his only two starts in 1904. 2B Victarion Van Vooren has been inconsistent since breaking into pro ball in 1898. He has shown a knack for the home run ball (2 already this season) but he just has not been able to hold on to a starting job at any level. Celts are reay to give any hitter a shot. Someone other than Chayo Aguina and Buck Stufft need to get on base for Cincinnati. A total of 36 shut outs are thrown in the first month. FA: Cleveland leads Buffalo by 1, ChiCardinals by 1.5, Baltimore by 5 CF: ChiTigers lead New York, Cincinnati and Boston by 2 End of May 5/1 Philadelphia trades George Positano to Boston for 1B/C Manfred Zelek. With Tormmund Bangham and 1B Armande Schukei hurt, the offense needs a jumpstart. The Pitching isn't good enough to get by with the runs Eagles are scoring. Less than two weeks later it is clear Philly is in panic mode, shopping Zelek around. FA: ChiCardinals lead Cleveland by 1 and Buffalo by 5 CF: Cincinnati leads ChiTigers and Boston by 1, and St. Louis by 3 Last edited by Denny Lemaster; 02-10-2012 at 11:54 PM. |

A 1000 thank yous
I see we have passed 1000 views. Thank you for following, it's always nice to come back and see that more people are enjoying (hopefully) what's going on here.
I've been really happy with this so far. When you put alot of thought into a dynasty, it sometimes doesn't quite live up to your expectations. This one has been working (almost) as planned. One thing I feel I've been lacking in is more of a connection to some of the players. So for both author and reader I'm going to drop in some, well not biographies--more career recaps, of some players through out the game. Some are stars, some, not so much. I'll do my best to keep everything contained in this world, these guys need to measured against their own not their real life cousins. So here is the first go at it, as time goes on, these things hopefully will get a bit more focused. |

Player Profile: 1B Delmore Gracik 1893-1902 Detroit/Louisville
If Kody Eblin was the best “scientific” hitter of the first decade of the OL's, Delmore Gracik may have been the best hitter period. No one got on base as frequently as he did, and until the ball went dead, he had few peers as a power hitter.
Born in the summer of 1863 in Oshkosh, WI, his towering frame (6'5”, 245) was well suited to crushing baseballs. Like many, the OL's begun while he was already mid-career. A veteran of the Midwest touring circuit, he had been a fixture in the Louisville area for the last few years before organization. He was one of the first players to learn the power the owners were to wield. Settled in Louisville, and on his way to the first FA batting title, Delmore found himself dealt to Detroit for Mitchell Mugan (who was on his way to the first CF batting title). Crushed to leave his adopted home, Delmore hitting fell off. After spending the winter of of 1893-1894 deciding between Detroit and latching on to one of the touring clubs in the south and west, Gracik came back to the Heralds. 1894 offense hit levels that baseball never knew before and haven’t seen since. Gracik's numbers were among the top in every category. 135 runs and 105 BB to lead, 118 RBI, 17 HR, 34 2B and 197 H and .372 average were all top ten. The .470 OBP was his 2nd of 5 times leading the league in that category. 1894 begun a streak of leading the league in walks for 6 years. 1895 Gracik leads the league in home runs and RBI (26, 120) while keeping a top ten batting average. 1897 was the last 'big' season by Gracik, .354, 21, 100, 32 2B, and 104 runs. While the raw numbers are not as impressive, his standing relative to the league remained top ten in 1898-1899. Winning his second batting title in 98 at .353 and finishing fourth in 99 at .341. The real fall came in the power numbers: in 97 Gracik lead the league in slugging at .547, in 98 he finished 3rd at .441. He went from leading the league with 21 HR, to finishing 2nd with 7. He drove in 5 runs in the Heralds first National Championship victory, but hardly contributed in the 1899 series. By 1900, at 36 he dropped from 94 walks to 67 (still good enough for third in the league) and any contributions to the club were lost as the Heralds followed up their 2nd title with a collapse to 7th place. 1901 it was even worst, as the club set records for losses in a season (which they would break the next year). At 37 and reduced to part time status, the Heralds traded the fading start to the also rebuilding Louisville Colonels. It was a bittersweet return to his adopted home. He was used almost exclusively in exhibition games and pregame warm ups. The record shows only 1 at bat in that return to Louisville. The next season (1903), Delmore played for the Class B Colorado Springs Tigers. While the average (.303) was still there, there weren't enough walks and extra base hits left. Leading Gracik to retire. Gracik retires with the following records: Single season OBP .492 in 1893, Career OBP .452 He is number 3 in career average (.3457 to Vin Hackleman's .3490), number 3 in career slugging (.5004 to Cesaro Fierros .5365), 3rd in Home Runs (110 to Anthony Cafasso's 128—the man traded to Detroit in 1901, Shaun Yurgl is 5th on the Home run list with 98), 10th in RBI (731 to Arrwyn Gookin's 868). 1904
End of June
FA: ChiCardinals lead Cleveland by 5, no one else within 12 games CF: Cincinnati leads Washington by 1, ChiTigers by 2, New York by 4—Last place St. Louis is only 7 back Pitching continues to dominate. Baltimore's Darcey Motsko and Boston's Leyman Sieman lead baseball with a 1.30 ERA. 122 shut outs have been thrown. 5 teams currently have ERAs below 2. End of July 7/5 Catseye Kozdron, currently of the Chicago Cardinals, becomes the first 200 game winner in history. Kozdron is also one of three players to have at least 200 losses, he was last over .500 sometime in 1901. 7/23 Longtime Celt and current Chicago Tiger Estevon “The Wolverine” Manquero becomes the 2nd 200 game winner. At 200-166, he's considered more “worthy”of the 200 game mantle than Kozdron. FA: ChiCardinals lead Cleveland by 6, no one else within 15 games. CF: Washington leads ChiTigers by 5 and New York by 6 End of season 8/9 Our third 200 game winner in just over a month. A Celt since 1893, Tom Von Hoene sits at 200-207 lifetime. Currently he is 14-15, 1.74, 123 K. The Chicago Cardinals take their second pennant in 3 years. The seven 7th place finishes in 8 years seem a long time ago. The pitching staff allowed barely 400 runs (416) and had one of the best offenses in the FA (531 runs). The trio of Kozdron (21-14, 1.73), Giels Widelski (23-12, 1.34) and Leo Rusco (23-11, 2.01) lead a strong pitching staff. The Cards will be without two of their best hitters for the National Championship. C Jered Rathje and RF Beiker Torrente will be missed. It looks like the Cards will go with two catchers who combined for 31 at bats this season. Ismael “Mean” Ambroiso (311/344/426, team leading 60 RBI an 65 runs) and steady pro Red Hindt (281/303/339) lead the offense. How tight was the CF race? First Time flag winner Washington was 3rd in ERA and 7th in runs allowed. Everything was bunched up in the CF. Randall McSparran was 2nd in the batting race (335/379/420, 25 2B) and Luis Hervandez (299/358/369, 22 2B) has been one of the best hitters in league history, including his legendary .425 in 1894. The staff was without an ace until 21 year old Albert Herche (20-5, 2.13, 111) arrived from Knoxville. Justen Knetter (19-15, 1.79, 136) and Tate Horsfield (18-16, 1.95, 136) will round out the playoff rotation. Almost season-killer Hugh “Brain-Child” Garringer (13-21, 2.53, 91) shouldn't get a start. Cleveland shortstop Niall Kubitz takes his 3rd batting title and his 5th straight top 3 finish. He also continues to post top ten totals in hits, home runs, RBI and runs. It is become the popular opinion that the 26-year old is the best player in baseball. Code:

1904: National Championship
Game One at Stock Yard Park (Chicago) With Justen Knetter (19-15, 1.79, 136 K) going for Washington and Catseye Kozdron (21-14, 1.73, 194 K) pitching for the Cards, it was sure to be a low scoring affair. And of course, it wasn't.
Hindt and Ambrosio singled in the first to put runners at the corners. Ambrosio steals second and pesters Knetter into a wild pitch. A Trigueros ground out later, the Cards lead 2-0. Washington struck back in the third. Hurler Knetter reached first on an error by Card emergency back stop Dunn McHose. Aggar Honeck doubled him home, and after a ground out, McSparran, Hervandez, McMahen and Walter strung together singles to plate 3 runs total. 3-2 Senators. Bottom of 4, the Cards jump back in front on 4 two out singles and bases loaded walk, 4-3 Chicago. Pete Walter's single and steal leading off the 6th help tied the game. Mendy Iampos hustled his way around the bases to put the Senators up 5-4. But Knetter couldn't hold it. With two out and runners on first and second, pitcher Catseye Kozdron doubles in a run. A wild pitch and single by Ainsley Blazer push Chicago up 7-5. There was adventure in the 9th, but Kozdron was able to keep the Sens at bay. Chicago was up 1-0. Game Two at Stock Yard Park (Chicago) Giels Widelski and Tate Horsfield gave Chicago fans the pitchers duel that yesterday promised. Widelski allowed 5 his while Horsfield was stout until the bottom 8th. That 5 hit, 3 run inning pushed the score to 4-0, giving the Cards win number 2. |

1904: National Championship
Game Three at Washington Ballpark The Senators go with mid season sensation Albert Herche to stop the slide. He scatters 7 singles, only allowing 3 late runs. Wilton de Camps and Aggar Honeck's triples key the Sens offense, 5-3 Washington. Cards lead series 2-1.
Game Four at Washington Ballpark Knetter and Kozdron match up in game four. Tension filled to the end. Cardinal lead off hitter Ainsley Blazer lays a bunt down and hustles around on a steal and single to take an early lead. In the bottom of the third it is Aggar Honeck's turn to hustle around the bases. But the Sens couldn't get another across the plate. In the bottom of the fifth a decision by Cards' manager Pirro Alegre threaten to give the game to Washington. Randall McSparran pushes a single thru the right side. When he steals second, Alegre walks Luis Hervandez (299/358/369, 22 2B, 65 RBI) to get to Sparky McMahen. McMahen (260/294/357, 28 2B, 67 RBI), after falling down 0-2, spokes a grounder through the left side and McSparran hustles home. Pete Walter drives home another with a ground out. 3-1, Washington. With two out in the 6th, the Cards rally to tie. Ambrosio singles and steals second. When Jon Trigueros lines one to center, Mean Ambrosio trots home. Millard Visone doubles Trigueros home to knot it at 3. Bottom the 8th, Kozdron loses it. He hits P Justen Knetter, an error by Red Hindt sets up Kiko Ricardez's RBI single. McSparran drives home two with his single. The damage could have been worse, but Luis Hervandez grounded into a double play. The Cards couldn’t' get another run, and the Senators are loving being at home, 6-3 Washington. Series now tied at 2. Game Five at Washington Ballpark Washington sweeps the 3 games at home. Tate Horsfield gave up a single run in the fifth on Dunn McHose's RBI ground out. The Sens score single runs in the next three innings to take the game. Game Six at Stock Yard Park (Chicago) Albert Herche (20-5, 2.13, 111K) put the Senators on his back as a 21-year old, he had the chance to close out their first National Championship. Leo Rusco (23-11, 2.01, 174 K) had been hit hard in his first playoff start, the Cards needed him to throw the game of his life. Aggar Honeck leads off with a singles to lead off the game, Ricardez reaches on an error. Sparky McMahen doubles to score Honeck while Ricardez is thrown out trying to score. Then Herche and Rusco match zeroes thru 7. Top of 8th Ricardez triples to lead off and comes home on another Hindt error. The Cards come to bat in the bottom of nine knowing their 5 errors had put them in this position. The bottom portion of the lineup needed to come through. With one out, Millard Visone homers to cut the Senator lead in half. An out later Esteban Elunas gets a pinch hit single, and now Card star Ainsley Blazer needed to extend the inning. But all he can manage is a weak grounder to Wilton de Camps. Washington wins the game 2-1 and wins their first National Championship 4-2. |

Hey, used to be a pretty active member in the Dynasty board (OOTP 5&6), just wanted you to know I'm coming out of my lurking retirement to encourage you to keep up the great work. Dynamic leagues are awesome, and you've outdone many by doing it across 5 levels of baseball.
I'm rooting for Louisville, I hope they get out of this rut, or the Colonels may be caught up in the aforementioned dynamics. That brings up a question; Are all the shifts preplanned or are you letting on the field or gate performance influence the movement? Would love to see a team in Lexington to compete with the rest of the SEC towns, or maybe have Danville (KY) resume their success from the amateur days at the lower levels. Great work! |

I'll have to take a closer look at Louisville this off season to see what the problem there has been. They came so close so many years, to see them fall off to irrelevancy is kind of sad. I'm not sure how much the affiliation/minors shifting affects Louisville. I do the shifting on the first day of the Preseason. At that time, the active roster is expanded, so a team keeps control of all players on the 40-man roster. Teams do lose prospects, so it could be hurting clubs more than I realize. I find it gives the illusion of a somewhat independent minor leagues. Are the shifts preplanned? I'm essentially using a list of what used to be called D-I Football schools (or the equivalent) from 1901 to the present for the minor league towns. I have a spread sheet with that evolution to work from. As far as the affiliations go (option agreements in this universe), those change yearly and are not planned--those are assigned, draft style in descending order of Market Size. I try to base the affiliations on geography. Teams end up with 3-6 "affiliates" a season. By my list, 1915 will see the Lexington Wildcats join our universe. It looks like they will spend a lot of time in the top Southern/Eastern leagues going forward. The Colonels will make a return, for awhile at least. Off season 1904-1905: Overview of the Louisville Colonels
What went wrong?
I don't think it is an understatement to say 7/30/1893 may have been the most important day in the history of the Louisville Colonels. That's the day GM Graig Cordell sent 1B Delmore Gracik to Detroit for Mitchell Mugan. Gracik became one of the most loved and praised hitters of his era, Mugan was out of Louisville early in 1895. Mungan was pretty decent hitter around the league, just not with the Colonels. But Cordell and Hoppenworth could never find a 1B to hold the job. The register shows 9 different regular 1B in the 11 years since Gracik departed. Let's look at 95-99, that is five season run that was the Colonels' best shot at a title. Here is the average line for the Colonels' regular (meaning-most starts) first basemen from 95-99, with Gracik's average line just below: Code:
AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB HP SF K SB CS AVG OBP SLG Colonels 349 104 17 6 2 52 57 43 1 7 23 9 8 .299 .389 .404 Gracik 489 167 21 5 14 88 80 96 1 7 18 5 4 .343 .459 .494 But the Colonels had two men fall on their swords, decisions which hastened the slide into oblivion. GM Graig Cordell resigned from the Colonels after the 1898 failure, and promptly won two pennants with the Cleveland Tigers. After an unhappy, but successful year with the Chicago Tigers, Cordell returned to Louisville to try an rekindle the magic. The loss of C C Bromwich as manager may have hurt even more. After leading the Boston Bulldogs, and fired by an embarrassed Gentry Fogo, Bromwich found his way to Louisville for 1894. The 71 wins in that first season were the lowest of his career. But after a collapse in 1899 (4-11 in the last 15) Bromwich (losing out to Cordell's first team in Cleveland) walked away from the game. The real problem with all these resignations, is that Walden Hoppenworth was hired to replace Cordell in 1899. You look at the record of Walden Hoppenworth, and you wonder why he is still working in baseball. From 1893-1896, his Chicago Cardinals peaked at 68 wins. His 1897-1898 Cleveland Tigers won a max of 62 games. His 1904 Brooklyn Lions won 58 games. Hoppenworth has had one team with a winning record: the 1899 Louisville Colonels. Built by Graig Cordell. The 1900-1903 Colonels maxed out at 68 wins. Cordell, for contrast, took the Hoppenworth built Cleveland Tigers from 62 wins to a pennant. Over matched managers didn't help either. Zak Passage worked with the pitchers on those great All-Stars clubs of the early days, and has had a hand in building the overpowering Chicago Cardinals staff. In between, he lost control of a spiraling Colonels club that just missed 4 straight pennants. Fogo Gefell got his feet wet with the Colonels and promptly jumped ship to mismanage Philadelphia. Ray Esponz was coach of some of the league's weakest offenses in New York, and his Colonels clubs were just as bad as Passages before him. But, like Gefell before him, Philadelphia apparently likes men who have first failed in Louisville. Cordell is back and is taking his time in naming a new manager. We'll take a look at the current roster and see how they are rebuilding in the Commonwealth. |

I appreciate this in-depth analysis of the Colonels! It does seem strangely familiar somehow. ![]() It's interesting how you were able to trace a club's fortune to one bad player decision. The GM change will be fascinating to follow.

I don't have a rooting interest at this time, I don't have a schedule, so if someone mentions Louisville, hell, I can spend a few days following Louisville through a season. It wasn't necessarily a bad trade at the time, both Gracik and Mugan won the batting title in the league they were traded from. And Mugan actually outperformed Gracik the month or so in the season after the trade. Gracik just turned out to have a great career at a position Louisville just couldn't fill. But I just believe the Colonels would have won at least 1 title if they had kept Gracik. Now, they are one of three clubs (Chicago Tigers and Pittsburgh are the others) without a pennant. |

Off season 1904-1905: Overview of the Louisville Colonels
As the 1904 off season opens, the Colonels don't quite have a full house. Of the possible 40 slots (20 man active roster and 20 players on option to lower classification clubs), the Colonels are only utilizing 29 at this time (clubs range from 25-35 at this time).
The Colonels were, all things considered, pretty much a dead average in pitching and hitting. The gap between them and the top clubs are huge though—they scored 111 runs fewer than Cleveland and allowed 50 more than the Chicago Cardinals. The Cardinals and Tigers have been the dominant teams the past few years. There might be other clubs contending, but these two usually seem to be close near the end. Since the name of the game is pitching in this era, we'll start there. Makes me wonder if something toxic is in the air in Louisville. Charlie Stanislav (RH, 25 years old, 15-18, 2.10, 136 K) made a huge jump in responsibilities from 03 to 04 (199.2 IP to 304.1 IP), but he isn't happy here. Maybe he'd rather be winning in Colorado Springs, or wants more runs or money. When a team leader is this unhappy, it can't be good. Cody Bruzek (RH, 25 years old, 11-20, 1.93, 140 K) has been the 'workhorse' for the Colonels since 1902. Until his shoulder gave him problems late in 04, he was a guy the Colonels could count on to take his regular turn. He has been growing as a pitcher, cutting down on walks and hit, even as the innings have increases. As long as the shoulder is healed completely, looks like he is on the verge of blossoming. Henley Ringe (RH, 27 years old, 17-18, 2.19, 145 K) gave the Colonels a great season in 1902 (16-18, 1.99, 138 K, 303.2 IP) wasted by a dog offense. 1903 and 1904 have involved a lot of hoping he would return to that form. His flashes of brilliance have been brief and are quickly becoming memories. The casual fan might point to the performance of Chris Andorf (RH, 23 years old, 14-6, 1.93, 108 K) as hope for the future. But he has been uneven over 02-03 seasons. He's full of talent, that's why he made it to Louisville at 21, but nothing of his performance in the lower classes hint at a successful future. Begu Topalli (RH, 38 years old, 2-7, 2.49, 35 K, 23 G) is the quote-unquote relief ace of the Colonels. While he had a fairly decent run as the Pirates reliever from 1896 to 1899, the past few years have been hard on him. He was out of organized ball in 1901 and spend 1902 with a Class D club. Not sure how much is actually left in his arm. Three other pitchers are on the extended roster: Andrey Cobin (LH, 24 years old, 15-14, 2.73, 111 K with Class C Lawrence Jayhawks), Norman Cowles (RH, 24 years old, 15-15, 3.83, 117 K at Class B Colorado Springs Tigers) and Emmet Voellinger (RH, 23 years old, 19-15, 4.00, 106 K at Class B Colorado Springs Tigers). Catcher is an area defiantly needing upgrading. Norwood Ronen (31, RH, 214/274/295) was the regular catcher. He has held that role since 1900, but has not been very productive. He spent 7 years with the Chicago Tigers, putting up good numbers in back up duty. As the every day catcher, he has slide from .295 to .214 in a Colonels uniform. James Letkiewicz (35, RH, 211/260/253) has been a back up catcher since the earliest days of the OL's. 1903 was probably his best season (297/388/406), but 04 ranks with his worse. Buster Sowul (25, RH, 249/356/305 at Class B Colorado Springs Tigers) talks a great game. Much better than he actually plays. He's made token appearances with the Colonels the last two years, that he can't “bust” through with only Ronen and Letkiewicz in his way speaks volumes about his actual ability. 1B Charles Goes (LH, 32, 257/297/374, 24 2B, 7 HR, 53 RBI) had been a top flight offensive player for just short of a decade in Washington. But nobody knows him because Washington was a joke during his time there. Now, he still has most of his power, but the hits are getting harder to find. Never walked much but strikes out even less. As long as he can still rattle the walls, he'll have a place with the Colonels. Lee Sutherlin (SH, 22, 261/334/331 with Class C Lawrence Jayhawks) is on the extended roster as a 1B. Rickie Terrizzi (RH, 30, 258/285/339, 29 SB) was the regular at second, most of the year. Then he was sent to Colorado Springs at the end of August, and never played again for either club. No idea if he is in the plans of the Colonels, even though he's been one of the few bright spots the last few years. It is a full on competition at this point for the Colonels at second. Bart Gaca (SH, 25, 232/259/280 and 295/362/476 with Colorado Springs), Rolando Yepez (RH, 22, 234/269/329) and Alonso Movonda (RH, 25, 273/307/355) all showed something at different points of the season. Movonda has been a solid utility guy for the last three years. The Colonels might have their third baseman already. Gerwazy Cichocki (RH, 24, 239/267/302, 51 RBI) wins praises for his defense. The walks have been down the last two years and the power really dropped off in 04, but he is young enough to bounce back. Phoenix Condiff (RH, 23, 244/277/289 and 304/410/474 with Class D Brunswick and 337/442/500 with Class C Lawrence) looks like a hitter. But may have more of a future at 2B or 1B. Quinten Koziarz (RH, 34, 275/313/348 with Colorado Springs) has spent over a decade as a utility player in various leagues and classes, but never at the Class A level. Shortstop is a position that the Colonels could be set for at least a decade. Juommo Greuling (RH, 23, 275/318/362, 22 2B, 50 SB) came straight from graduating from St. Thomas (MN) to take the starting job for the last half of 1902. Who knows how good this guy will be in a few years. Leon Narvaiz (LH, 24, 256/274/356 and 309/339/387 with Colorado Springs) and Torbart Keckley (RH, 26, 297/397/376 with Colorado Springs and 318/413/434 with Lawrence) are either backups or trading chits. The outfield is a mixed bag. Sam Schorzman (LH, 30, 274/311/330, 19 SB) showed value in a part time role. Isiah Keeven (LH, 24, 220/280/304, 19 2B, 17 2B) got a shot because of a monster year at Colorado Springs in 1903. He's shown more power at lower classes, but hasn't had the same success at Louisville. Dick Zembrzuski (RH, 25, 264/327/366 at Colorado Springs) has less and less success the more he moves up the ladder. Linus Creppel (LH, 23, 310/353/381, 50 RBI, 51 Runs, 42 SB) is another “straight from college” success for the Colonels. He graduated from Sacramento State in 01 and played a significant role beginning in 02. Creppel took a big leap (254 to 310) in average so he could be on the edge of stardom or a flash in the pan. Poth Bajus (RH, 22, 298/337/357) has barely 120 professional games since leaving High School in 1901. With Creppel in center, looks to be at one of the corners. Cornell Wean (RH, 23, 221/252/309, 12 SB) spent time in Lawrence and Colorado Spring too. Most of his success has been in Class C, may still need a year or two. Aldo “Destroyer” Disandro Jr. (LH, 24, 329/377/471 at Colorado Springs) looks like the real thing. Has had three 'auditions' with the Colonels in 01, 02 and 04 which haven't gone well. Looks like he needs more consistency to be an effective hitter. |
