San Francisco Quakes: The Beginning of a New Era
![]() Breaking News: USBL Expands To 26 Teams SAN FRANCISCO, CA (AP)-- After 23 years of no baseball in San Francisco, the city has been awarded with an expansion team in the United States Baseball League. After thoughtful consideration and many meetings at the league offices in New York, the owners agreed on adding two expansion teams to the Nixon League. The two teams will be the San Francisco Quakes, who will play in the West Division, and the St. Louis Sabres, who will play in the Midwest Division. They will immediately start to assemble their front office and coaching staffs before partaking in the Expansion Draft scheduled for tomorrow night. San Francisco owner Werner Campbell was quick to announce that 27-year-old Kevin Lewis will become the franchises first General Manager. Kevin has spent the last four seasons with the Atlanta Avengers, but was unable to put together a playoff caliber team. Many people are very skeptical of Campbell's decision. I first want to thank the city of Atlanta and Avengers owner Armando Brown for the great opportunity I had to run the team for the last four seasons. Although we didn't reach the playoffs, I felt the franchise was moving the right direction and I know that franchise will be one of the better ones in a few years. When Mr. Campbell called and asked to meet about becoming the potential General Manager for San Francisco, I couldn't refuse. What he presented to me at the meeting was above and beyond anything I could have dreamed about. He said he is willing to give me full control of all player and personnel decisions. Starting from scratch, with the expansion draft, is something I have always wanted to do. To build the team I want is going to be fun, although challenging at the same time. I look forward to making the San Francisco Quakes a household name quick," new GM Kevin Lewis stated to media. "When my assistants and I sat down and wrote down a list of potential General Manager candidates, Kevin's name was at the top of that list for many reasons. First, he is the youngest GM in the league and although Atlanta hasn't contended over the last few years, he was starting to really put together a solid foundation. Secondly, he has any immense amount of baseball knowledge and has what it takes to be the first GM in San Francisco history. I really look forward to working with Kevin as we begin to build this franchise. He has the full support from me and the rest of this organization as well as all the resources he needs," Owner Werner Campbell stated. The San Francisco Quakes will play their home games at Wells Fargo Stadium, which has a capacity of 49,300 fans. Also at the the press conference was the unveiling of the San Francisco Quake logo and uniform: ![]() ![]() Last edited by Klew1986; 01-13-2012 at 11:23 AM. |
