The Dynamos of Chesapeake

So, I'll be writing a dynasty report from a fictional league. The team, as you may have guessed, is the Chesapeake Dynamos.

Some stuff about the league:

It's big. 2 leagues, 20 divisions each, 5 teams in each of those (I've done bigger, but everything took forever). I set 1-game series as the standard, and enabled interleague, so I probably won't be playing anyone more than twice this year. Because of the monstrous size, there are twelve wildcards per league (It would be less, but I can't set byes). This means that there are 64 teams and 6 rounds, of nine games each, in the playoffs.

Also: I will be playing, and posting the box score and recap of, every single game.

I'm going to start with a "Meet the Players" thing, so that'll be just a couple minutes (and by a couple, I mean quite a bit longer).

EDIT: Also, I've already played 20 games, before I decided to actually do this, so it'll start a little into the season.

So, I think the best way to do this will be to just start with the games. The first (or my twenty-first) will be coming shortly.

April 23, 2011, vs Bronx Skyhawks
Freddy Bravo's three-run bomb in the first gave the Dynamos an early lead. But they kept it up. In the third, Bravo hit a solo homer, to follow Pablo Espinoza's two-run shot right before it. The Bronx Skyhawks thought they still had a chance, but Carlos Ortiz's grand slam in the fifth ended that. RBI doubles in the sixth, for Espinoza and Bravo, stretched out the lead even further. In the eighth, reliever Juan Vicenteno allowed a sac fly and a bases-loaded walk, which gave the Bronx two runs, but that was all.
W, 12-2

Pitching:
W: Curt Wyatt (4-0), who pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing six hits.
L: Orlando Gonzalez (2-3), who went only two and a third innings, giving up six.

Player of the Game: Freddy Bravo, for his two home runs and five RBI.

Manager Harry Smith's Quote: "I think Curt really did a nice job, and his control throughout that game was great. Of course, our hitters did a great job as well."

April 24, 2011, at Austin Unions
Chesapeake managed a run in the first, but that was dwarfed by the bottom of the inning. Their pitcher, Von Neal, gave up ten runs, capped by Rodrigo Rangel's grand slam. Most people would think Chesapeake would be finished, but they would be wrong. Pablo Espinoza's third-inning three-run home run cut the lead to six. Daniel Knight's sixth-inning solo shot made it five. In the top of the eighth, Knight and Victor Pearce hit back-to-back homers, cutting the lead to three. Two bases-loaded walks later in the inning made it 10-9. Then Knight singled, driving in another run. The game was tied, but Vic Pearce couldn't give the Dynamos a lead, and instead flied out to end the inning. After no one could score in the ninth, the game went into extra innings. No one could score. Finally, in the twelfth inning, with Jon Jones pitching for Chesapeake and two outs, Artie Gregory homered, handing the Dynamos their third loss of the year.
L, 11-10 (12)

Pitching:
Chesapeake Starter: Von Neal, 1 inning, 10 ER, 61 pitches
Austin Starter: Joe Walker, 5.1 IP, 5 ER, 4 K
W: Luis Bermudez (1-0), who pitched 2.1 innings without a hit in relief. He did, however, walk three.
L: Jon Jones (0-1), for the walk-off he allowed. In his first appearance of the year, Jones went for 3.2 innings, and gave up nothing except for a single and the walk-off.
BS: Alex Gallagher (2), who gave up the game-tying single to Danny Knight.

Player of the Game: Daniel Knight. Though a member of the losing team, his two home runs, three RBI, and four runs were a big reason Chesapeake even had a chance.

Manager Harry Smith's Quote: We are confident that Von's performance was a fluke, and, though we lost, we still played -- [reporter says something inaudible] -- DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT US CRACKING UNDER PRESSURE! YOU THINK WE'RE CRACKING? TELL ME WHO'S ****ING 20-3! TELL ME WHO HAS THE BEST ****ING RECORD IN ALL OF ****ING BASEBALL! US! DON'T TELL ME WE'RE CRACKING, YOU PIECE OF ****! MY TEAM WENT OUT THERE, AND WE ****ING PLAYED OUR ****ING HEARTS OUT! FOUR HOME RUNS! TEN RUNS TOTAL! ONE BAD INNING! CRACKING UNDER PRESSURE? I THINK NOT! That will be all, ladies and gentlemen.

Author's note: I had fun writing that

EDIT: So, updates will be a lot less detailed than this. That way I can spend a lot of time actually playing.

April 25, 2011, vs New York Sky Knights: Ken Howard hits three home runs as Chesapeake defeats New York 10-0. Pablo Espinoza and Gary Bennett also homer, and Craig Hamilton pitches a six-hit shutout, with seven strikeouts.

April 27, 2011, at Washington Wheelers: Allen Nixon gets a quality start, and Johnny Clark's two home runs help the Dynamos win 5-4. Jon Jones gets the Save.

April 28, 2011, vs Miami Blackhawks: Von Neal pitches six shutout innings, striking out eight, and Johnny Clark hits a solo homer. Going into the ninth, Chesapeake leads 1-0, but Juan Vicenteno blows it, and Miami wins 3-1.

April 29, 2011, at Omaha Darts: Vic Pearce's solo shot and Gary Bennett's two-run double cap a 6-3 win, as David Ryan pitches a stellar seven innings.

April 30, 2011, vs Virginia Beach Cranes: Curt Wyatt goes seven innings and gives up four runs as Chesapeake wins 8-5. Johnny Clark hits two home runs.

May 1, 2011: Espinoza Wins Batter of the Month -- Pablo Espinoza, after hitting .404, with twelve home runs, 40 RBI, and 34 runs, won batter of the month. Espinoza, 26, said to the press: "Wow. I mean, I'm really gratified and honored that you guys decided I was the best hitter in the league for the last month. It's really great when everything comes together for me, hitting-wise, like it did last month."

Trade Rumors Surround CF Ortiz -- Chesapeake Center-Fielder Carlos Ortiz has been in the news of late, as rumor has it that the Dynamos will trade the 37-year-old for a younger player, who's a better hitter. Ortiz is the number-eight hitter in the Chesapeake lineup, and his .240 batting average, three home runs, and seventeen RBI indicate that he's seen better days. A senior front office official, who has asked to remain anonymous, said that "We're not sure what Carlos has to offer to the team anymore. Really, he's old, he can't hit, and he can't show the slightest bit of effort. Most people we can get in a trade are better and younger." Dynamo GM Jim Friedman responded, "That statement is absolutely wrong. We certainly want Carlos on the team. We want him for his intelligence. We want him for his leadership. We want him for his experience. We want him for his defense. And we definitely want him for his hitting. To say otherwise is ludicrous, and so is the suggestion that he doesn't show effort."

Email from Carlos Ortiz to Jim Friedman, Harry Smith:
We need to talk.

------------------------------------
I made up the last two items. So, I'm rolling a random number generator, which will determine how convinced Ortiz is by the truth, that I won't trade him (right now, anyway. Heh-heh.). This will affect his morale, which I will edit accordingly.

873 out of 1000! So he actually feels more secure.

You have a great imagination.

Bravo, keep it up. As I read Manager Smith's rant, I had "playoffs... who's talking about playoffs" running through my head.

Thanks. That really means a lot, because yours is one of my favorite dynasty reports.

I wish I had started this earlier; David Ryan had a no-hitter in his second start.

May 1, 2011, at St. Louis Turbojets: Craig Hamilton gives up two runs in seven innings, and Freddy Bravo and Victor Pearce homer as Chesapeake wins 7-2.

May 2, 2011, vs Anchorage Platoon: Vic Pearce and Pablo Espinoza homer, Allen Nixon has a quality start, the Dynamos score eleven times in the fourth inning and win 19-2.

May 3, 2011, at Greensboro Steeds: Von Neal gives up six runs, four earned, in seven innings. Gary Bennett homers, and so does Pablo Espinoza, who drives in four, and the Dynamos win 8-6.

May 4, 2011, vs Brooklyn Buckshots: Freddy Bravo hits two jacks and drives in four, Daniel Knight homers and drives in four, and even though David Ryan gives up five runs in four innings, Chesapeake wins 17-5.

May 5, 2011, at Austin Couriers: Pablo Espinoza drives in three, Carlos Ortiz and Daniel Knight homer, Curt Wyatt pitches five shutout innings, and all runs are scored in the sixth as Chesapeake wins 7-1.

May 6, 2011, vs Charlotte Honey Bugs: Craig Hamilton gives up just a run in eight stellar innings, but the game goes into extras. The Dynamos win 2-1 in the tenth when Ken Howard hits a walk-off double.

May 7, 2011, at Indianapolis Pinnacles: Allen Nixon gives up three runs in seven innings, Ortiz, Pearce, and Knight homer, and Chesapeake triumphs 6-4.

May 8, 2011, vs Colorado Springs Joy Riders: David Ryan pitches a four hit, twelve strikeout shutout, and Gary Bennett homers as the Dynamos win easily, 5-0.

The Dynamos are in first place in their division, with a 32-4 record. They are six games ahead of the Baltimore Sidekicks (who, incidentally, have the second-best record in the league, to me). Chesapeake also leads in runs scored, have allowed the least runs, and are first in the power rankings.

May 10, 2011, at Cleveland Venturas: Von Neal gives up seven runs in four innings, Daniel Knight hits two grand slams and drives in eleven, Vic Pearce and Carlos Ortiz also homer, and the Dynamos easily win 16-6.

May 11, 2011, vs Santa Ana: Ten runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth (combined, obviously), and homers by Knight and Espinoza make up for a lackluster performance by Craig Hamilton, and Chesapeake wins 11-8.

May 12, 2011, at Hialeah Kingcobras: Curt Wyatt pitches eight shutout innings, Johnny Clark drives in two, with three hits, and even though Benny Bader gives up two runs in the ninth, the Dynamos win 3-2.

May 13, 2011, vs Cleveland Surge: David Ryan allows seven runs in his five innings. Freddy Bravo homers, but the Surge still win 8-3.

May 14, 2011, at Arlington Hurlers: Even though Bravo homers again, Chesapeake doesn't seem to have much of a chance. Allen Nixon gives up four runs, and going into the ninth, Chesapeake is down 6-2. But a 2-RBI singles, three RBI singles, and an RBI groundout give the Dynamos the game, 8-6.

May 15, 2011, vs New Orleans: The only run of the game is Johnny Clark's sixth-inning homer. Von Neal pitches 7.1 shutout innings, and Chesapeake wins 1-0.

May 16, 2011: Draft Poll Announced -- FBL News: Draft Pool Revealed: With the 2011 rookie draft only 30 days away, teams across Fictional Baseball League are preparing their scouting missions, trying to assess their long-term needs and hoping that they land the prospect that will positively define their club for the next few years. Most of the young men in the draft pool will have gone as far as they can go, but then, a few will surprise and pan out as quality -- or even great -- professional ballplayers.

Pre-Draft Analysis -- The system has exactly three people with serious potential in it -- SP Elmer Blades (R), 1B Antonio Olivares (R), and SS Wyatt Harrington (AAA), though OSA would dispute the last one (and I have some decent minor league relievers). So it would look as if I needed people pretty much everywhere. However, this is not the case, because my roster is generally pretty young. Craig Hamilton is 37, and Marcos Lara is too. Franklin Cherry and Jon Jones are both 36. Ken Howard and Carlos Ortiz (and Lou Krall, my backup CF) are 37. That's everyone over 30. Curt Wyatt is 20, and Allen Nixon, Juan Vicenteno, and David Ryan are 24. For batters, most are in their mid-20s. Gary Bennett and Johnny Clark are only 21.

What all this shows is that I need to draft:
  • Bullpen (to make up for Jones, Lara, Cherry, though I may have a little in my system already, it won't be of the same caliber)
  • Starting Pitching (to make up for Hamilton)
  • Outfield (I have four 37-y/o OFs)
  • Really anything (there's no harm in developing a good system, and mine sucks at the moment)
In fact, there may be a deal soon involving Harrington.

Any players you want screenshots of?

May 16, 2011: Dynamos Close Deals -- The Chesapeake Dynamos and Cleveland Surge have made a big deal involving two minor leaguers. The Dynamos gave up AAA shortstop Wyatt Harrington, who was ranked as the #16 prospect in America, and a 15th-round draft pick, in return for AAA right-fielder William Trent.

The Dynamos made another minor-league deal, this time with the Charlotte Skylines. Chesapeake gave up reliever Oscar Anderson for #3 prospect Miguel Hernandez, a starting pitcher.

There was one more minor-league trade the Dynamos made, with the Kansas City Steeds. They gave up catcher Eduardo Pena for closer Luis Miguel Gallegos.

May 17, 2011, at Chicago Breakouts: Craig Hamilton gives up two runs in a complete game, and Pablo Espinoza's ninth-inning home run is the winning one. Chesapeake wins 4-2.

May 18, 2011, vs Charlotte Tricksters: David Ryan strikes out twelve and gives up two hits in eight shutout innings. Pablo Espinoza and Gary Bennett each hit two home runs, Espinoza drives in eight. The Dynamos crush Charlotte 18-0.

I kept playing, and I'm now at the draft, on June 15. I'm 62-8 at the moment. All my pitchers are doing well, Pablo Espinoza is clearly the MVP so far, though really all my hitters are killing. I'll post a screenshot of my team page at the All-Star Break, which is in a couple of (in-game) days. Now, the draft special! I have the 200th pick.

1st Round: 3B John Hollingsworth: CON P 86, GAP P 61, POW P 47. A good but not great player, Hollingsworth will be either a good, .320-.330 hitting, starting third-baseman for us when Gary Bennett gets too old, or he'll be traded for someone I deem better, or who fills a need, since Bennett won't be leaving anytime soon.

2nd Round: RF John Chappell: CON P 51, GAP P 49, POW P 35. I hope I can get someone good for him in a trade. (Full disclosure: I didn't mean to draft him, I meant to draft an awesome MR.)

3rd Round: MR Tony Salas: STU P 85, MOV P 80, CON P 66. The reliever I wanted was drafted, but this guy and another awesome one were still there. He should be a bullpen ace in a couple years.

And then everyone else sucks.

I have traded Chappell! And three other minor-leaguers I have no use for. And it was for an awesome closer! So meet Jonathan Duty, everyone.
