Through The Ivy: A Chicago Cubs Dynasty with OOTP 13

New Management in Chicago for 2012 season
March 27th, 2012

The Cubs will head into the 2012 season with a brand new management, lead by Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. Epstein has been named the President of Baseball Operations and Hoyer will assume the role of the General Manager. Before joining the Cubs, Epstein was the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox and won two championships. Hoyer comes to the Cubs after leaving his role as General Manager of the San Diego Padres. Dale Sveum will take over as the Cubs' manager. Sveum is familiar with the NL Central as he was the Hitting Coach for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2011. All eyes will be on the new administration as they lead a rebuilding process which will hopefully result in a World Series title in the near future.

Stay tuned for a closer look at the 2012 Chicago Cubs!

Thanks to Ryan008 for allowing me to use the same format as he does in his Blue Jays Dynasty, if you haven't already seen it, you should definitely check it out... it's great!

Meet the 2012 Chicago Cubs - Starting Pitchers

SP Matt Garza
Age: 28 Pitches: R Velocity: 93-95 MPH
2011 Stats: 10-10 3.32 ERA 63 BB 197 K (Cubs)
Contract: $9,500,000 (arbitration eligible)
GM's Comments: We acquired Garza from the Tampa Bay Rays in an off-season trade prior to the 2011 season. We're gonna be looking for Matt to be the ace of the rotation this season. He had a very good K/BB ratio last season and he has the potential to strike out well over 200 batters this season. If Matt pitches well this season, we will definitely look into locking him up with a multi-year contract.

SP Ryan Dempster
Age: 34 Pitches: R Velocity: 90-92 MPH
2011 Stats: 10-14 4.80 ERA 82 BB 192 K (Cubs)
Contract: 1 year $14,000,000 remaining with Chicago
GM's Comments: 2011 was an off-year for Ryan. He is a very good pitcher and I am fully confident that he can turn it around and have a solid season. He can throw all 5 of his pitches effectively and his most effective pitch is his slider. However, Ryan will be 35 in May... It is a definite possibility that Ryan could be dealt before the trade deadline if we are having a bad season.

SP Paul Maholm
Age: 29 Pitches: L Velocity: 86-88 MPH
2011 Stats: 6-14 3.66 ERA 50 BB 97 K (Pirates)
Contract: 2 years $10,750,000 remaining with Chicago (2nd year Team Opt.)
GM's Comments: Maholm is the lone lefty in our rotation. He is very familiar with the NL Central as he spent the last 7 years with the Pirates. He does not have overpowering stuff and his key to success this season will be limiting the number of walks he gives up. His 6-14 record last season is very misleading as he posted a solid ERA of 3.66 and a 1.29 WHIP. Paul is a very welcome addition to our team!

SP Jeff Samardzija
Age: 27 Pitches: R Velocity: 93-95 MPH
2011 Stats: 8-4 2.97 ERA 50 BB 87 K (Cubs)
Contract: $2,800,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: Samardzija was great out of the bullpen last year. He really impressed us this spring. Me, Theo, and Dale all thought he was ready to make the move into the starting rotation. His control can be erratic sometimes but he has the ability to strike out a lot of batters, as he struck out 87 in 88 innings last season. He held opposing batters to a .199 average last season.

SP Chris Volstad
Age: 25 Pitches: R Velocity: 90-92 MPH
2011 Stats: 5-13 4.89 ERA 49 BB 117 K (Marlins)
Contract: $2,655,000 (arbitration eligible)
GM's Comments: At 6'7", Volstad is a towering presence on the mound. He pitched in Florida for the first 4 seasons of his major league career. He is not much more than a back-of-the-rotation starter but we hope he can at least eat up some innings and keep us in ballgames long enough for the offense to get a chance to score some runs.

Top Prospects
The Cubs do not have much in the way of pitching prospects. They signed 18 year-old Cuban pitcher Gerardo Concepcion to a 5 year contract worth a total of $6,000,000 this offseason. Concepcion, a lefty is still 2 or 3 years away from pitching in the big leagues and he will begin the season pitching in Boise (Short Season A). Concepcion is a low risk, high upside signing. He has potential to be a very good pitcher in the majors. Trey McNutt is another pitcher who could be pitching for the Cubs in a couple of seasons. He will begin the 2012 season in Tennessee (AA) and could be promptly promoted to Triple-A Iowa if he does well in his first few starts of the season. McNutt was taken in the 32nd round of the 2009 amateur draft and his velocity tops out around 95 MPH. It is very possible that McNutt will reach the show as a reliever rather than a starter, as there has been some talk of him converting to a relief pitcher.

Meet the 2012 Chicago Cubs - Bullpen

MR Rafael Dolis
Age: 24 Pitches: R Velocity: 96-98 MPH
2011 Stats: 8-5 3.22 ERA 35 BB 48 K (AA - Tennessee)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: Rafael got the call-up in September last season, skipping AAA entirely. He pitched 1 scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout. Our Scouting Director, Tim Wilken, has a lot of positive feedback about Rafael and we think he can be a main part of our bullpen for many years to come. At 24 years old, he is the youngest member of our pitching staff. His fastball and slider are both very good pitches. If he improves his changeup, he could have a very successful career.

MR James Russell
Age: 26 Pitches: L Velocity: 87-89 MPH
2011 Stats: 1-6 4.12 ERA 14 BB 43 K (Cubs)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: Russell gave up way too many hits last year, as opposing batters hit .279 against him. Russell does however have very good control, only walked 14 batters in nearly 70 innings of work. He will primarily be used against lefties this season.

MR Randy Wells
Age: 29 Pitches: R Velocity: 89-90 MPH
2011 Stats: 7-6 4.99 ERA 47 BB 82 K (Cubs)
Contract: $2,705,000 (arbitration eligible)
GM's Comments:Randy was used as a starter for the last 3 seasons, but after posting a 4.99 ERA and giving up 23 homers in 23 starts last season, we will be moving him to the bullpen to start the year. If he impresses us and pitches like he did in 2009, he could very well earn his spot in the rotation back.

MR Travis Wood
Age: 25 Pitches: L Velocity: 90-92 MPH
2011 Stats: 6-6 4.84 ERA 40 BB 76 K (Reds)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: We acquired Wood this offseason from the Reds in the Sean Marshall trade. He is one of two lefties in our bullpen. Travis will be used mostly as a mop-up reliever and against left-handed batters. He has good stamina and can be used as a long reliever as well. Like Wells, if Wood impresses us, he could find himself in the starting rotation in the near future. He definitely needs to work on his K/BB ratio.

MR Kerry Wood
Age: 34 Pitches: R Velocity: 93-95 MPH
2011 Stats: 3-5 3.35 ERA 21 BB 57 K (Cubs)
Contract: 2 years $6,000,000 remaining with Chicago (2nd year Team Opt.)
GM's Comments: We will be using Kerry in a setup role this season. He still has more than enough in him to be an effective reliever for the next few years. Obviously, the key for him is to stay healthy. He's had a lot of injury problems throughout his career, but as of now, he is feeling good and ready to be a leader for our team and a mentor to the younger pitchers.

MR Shawn Camp
Age: 36 Pitches: R Velocity: 89-90 MPH
2011 Stats: 6-3 4.21 ERA 22 BB 32 K (Blue Jays)
Contract: 1 year $480,000 remaining with Chicago
GM's Comments: Last year was a disappointing season for Shawn in Toronto. Opposing batters hit .310 off of him, Shawn's key to success will be keeping the ball on the ground. We're gonna need him to bounce back this season to take the load off of Kerry's shoulders in the setup role to make sure that [Kerry] is able to keep his arm injury free.

CL Carlos Marmol
Age: 29 Pitches: R Velocity: 90-93 MPH
2011 Stats: 34 SV 2-6 4.01 ERA 48 BB 99 K (Cubs)
Contract: 2 years $16,800,000 remaining with Chicago
GM's Comments: Both Carlos' ERA and opponent batting average last year were higher than what we have come to expect from him. Carlos is a lights out closer as long as he can limit the amount of batters he walks. Chris [Bosio, pitching coach] has been working with Carlos on his mechanics so we hope that makes a noticeable difference this year. We are 100% percent behind Carlos as our closer.

Meet the 2012 Chicago Cubs - Position Players

C Geovany Soto
Age: 29 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): None
2011 Stats: 421 AB .228 17 HR 54 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: $4,300,000 (arbitration eligible)
GM's Comments: Geovany has had an production pattern for the last 4 years. In 2008 and 2010 he was very good, however in 2009 and 2011 he has been very bad at the plate. Geovany definitely has the talent to be one of the top offensive catchers in the MLB, as he has proven before. He needs to work on his consistency so he can be produce offensively every year. Geo will be our starting catcher this year.

C Steven Clevenger
Age: 25 Bats: L Secondary Postion(s): 1B
2011 Stats: 86 AB .407 3 HR 15 RBI (AAA - Iowa)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: With the limited at-bats Steven got in Iowa last season, he really impressed us with his ability to get on base. This spring, he was one of the hardest workers out there. He'll be backing up Soto at catcher but he will get a small amount of playing time at 1B as well.

1B Bryan Lahair
Age: 29 Bats: L Secondary Postion(s): LF/RF
2011 Stats: 456 AB .331 38 HR 109 RBI (AAA - Iowa)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: Bryan was phenomenal last year at Triple-A Iowa and was named the MVP of the Pacific Coast League. He hasn't proven himself yet but we're going to give him a chance this season and he will be batting clean-up to start out the season. He will be in full time versus righties but against lefties we will sit him most of the time unless he proves he can handle left handed pitchers.

1B Jeff Baker
Age: 30 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): 2B/3B/LF/RF
2011 Stats: 201 AB .269 3 HR 23 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: $1,375,000 (arbitration eligible)
GM's Comments: Jeff's primary role this season will be as a utility player. He can play both corner infield roles, second base, and also both corners of the outfield. Most of his playing time will come at 1B against left handed pitchers.

2B Darwin Barney
Age: 26 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): 3B/SS
2011 Stats: 529 AB .276 2 HR 43 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: Barney had a solid season last year, and I think he can definitely improve even more this season. He doesn't hit a lot of homers, but he has good power to the gaps. He hit 23 doubles last season and I wouldn't be surprised if he hit over 30 this year. He's going to be hitting 2nd in the order on Opening Day.

2B Blake DeWitt
Age: 26 Bats: L Secondary Postion(s): 3B
2011 Stats: 230 AB .265 5 HR 26 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: $1,100,000 (arbitration eligible)
GM's Comments: We're going to be using Blake off the bench to begin the season. He'll be mainly used as a pinch-hitter and will get a few starts at 2B when Darwin needs a rest. I don't see much fit for Blake in our plans this season and he could be gone before the end of the April.

3B Ian Stewart
Age: 26 Bats: L Secondary Postion(s): None
2011 Stats: 122 AB .156 0 HR 6 RBI (Rockies)
Contract: $2,237,500 (arbitration eligible)
GM's Comments: Ian is a guy who's not gonna hit for a very high average, but can hit 20 plus homers each season. He had injury problems last year, but if he can stay healthy, i don't see any reason why he won't play like he did 2 or 3 years ago. He will be our starting third baseman to open the season.

3B Joe Mather
Age: 29 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): 1B/LF/CF/RF
2011 Stats: 75 AB .213 1 HR 9 RBI (Braves)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: We signed Joe to be a utility player this season. He's going to be getting playing time at 3B and 1B against lefties. He's been having problems staying healthy throughout his career so we want to make sure we don't overwork him.

SS Starlin Castro
Age: 22 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): None
2011 Stats: 674 AB .307 10 HR 66 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: $480,000 (contract gets automatically renewed)
GM's Comments: Starlin Castro is the future of this franchise. When a guy leads the league in hits when he is 21 years old, you know you have something special. Starlin is still growing as a player, physically and mentally. Last year, he made some sloppy mistakes on defense and he's been working hard to improve on that part of his game. Starlin's going to bat 3rd in the order this year. I'm expecting big, big things from this kid.

LF Reed Johnson
Age: 35 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): CF/RF
2011 Stats: 246 AB .309 5 HR 28 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: 1 year $1,150,000 remaining with Chicago
GM's Comments: Reed is one of the toughest, grittiest players in the league. He always gives it 100 percent. Reed will not be a full time starter, but he will have an important role to play... He's going to be getting starts at RF versus left handed pitchers and will also be getting start at CF and RF.

LF Alfonso Soriano
Age: 36 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): None
2011 Stats: 475 AB .244 26 HR 88 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: 3 years $54,000,000 remaining with Chicago
GM's Comments: Soriano's production has obviously decline and his speed has dropped off from what it was 5 years ago, however, he finished last season with 88 RBI, the most he's had in a season with the Cubs. I feel like he can still contribute and hit 25 plus homers this season. He is the oldest position player on our team, and the front office expects him to help the younger players out. Alfonso will be playing LF and batting 5th in the lineup on Opening Day. He's been having some problems with his knee lately, but it's not going to stop him from playing

CF Marlon Byrd
Age: 34 Bats: R Secondary Postion(s): LF/RF
2011 Stats: 446 AB .276 9 HR 35 RBI (Cubs)
Contract: 1 year $6,500,000 remaining with Chicago
GM's Comments: Marlon is a great player to have on the team. He missed some games last year with an injury, but he's fully recovered and ready to give it his all and get another good season under his belt. Marlon will be manning CF for us this season.

RF David DeJesus
Age: 32 Bats: L Secondary Postion(s):LF/CF
2011 Stats: 442 AB .240 10 HR 46 RBI (Athletics)
Contract: 1 year $6,500,000 remaining with Chicago
GM's Comments: We brought in David as a replacement for Kosuke Fukudome and Tyler Colvin. He's one of the smartest guys on the field on any given day, and probably one of the smartest in the whole league. He doesn't have elite speed, but he is a very good baserunner and also a great fielder. David's going to be in the starting lineup most days but we might sit him against lefties on some days when the matchup isn't favorable. He'll be our leadoff hitter to start the season.

Top Prospects
1B Anthony Rizzo is the one of the top 1B prospects in the MLB. Shortly after Jed Hoyer joined the Cubs from the Padres, he made a trade with the Padres to acquire the talented young player. Rizzo was great in AAA last year but was very disappointing when he was called up to the big leagues. He's going to start the season in Iowa, but it is almost a guarantee that he will join the big league club sometime this season. Another talented young player in the Cubs farm system is CF Brett Jackson, the Cubs picked him with their 1st round pick in the 2009 amateur draft. Jackson could be a five-tool player but he will have to improve his patience at the plate as he has a tendency to swing at bad pitches. Jackson will start the season in Iowa and like Rizzo, will probably be up in the majors sometime this season. With the 9th overall pick of the 2011 amateur draft, the Cubs picked 3B Javier Baez out of Arlington County High School in Florida. Baez will start the season in Peoria (Single A), he has great power potential and could hit 30-40 homeruns in a season. He has average speed and has the upside of a five tool hitter.

Just a few minor league free agent signings before the season starts... however, it is likely that there will be a few moves made in April/May. Thanks for reading!

Cubs Sign 2 Players to Minor League Deals
March 28th, 2012
The Chicago Cubs have announced the signings of pitchers Freddy Dolsi and Mark Prior. Dolsi has been assigned to Triple-A Iowa and Prior has been assigned to Advanced Single-A Daytona. Like many other teams have done, the Cubs will give Mark Prior another chance to restore his career.

Prior entered the league over a decade ago as the Cubs selected him with the 2nd overall pick in the 2001 MLB amateur draft. Prior had a promising career ahead of him until it was derailed by injuries. 11 years later, after stints with the Padres, Rangers, Yankees, Red Sox, and even the Orange County Flyers on the Golden Baseball League (Independent). Prior is back to where it all started, with one last chance to save his career.

In other news from around the league, Opening Day baseball will be underway today... Mariners vs. Athletics in Japan!

Wouldn't it be something if Prior turned it around. Obviously, I think that's an extreme long shot, but what a feel-good update.

Cubs Deal Byrd and DeWitt for Prospects
April 21st, 2012

The Chicago Cubs (6-8) and the Tampa Bay Rays (11-3) have agreed to the first trade of the 2012 season. Chicago will send veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd (34 years old) and 2B Blake DeWitt (26) along with $5,100,000 to the Rays in exchange for two minor league prospects; infielder Oscar Hernandez and Wilmer Almonte, a pitcher. Byrd has been struggling at the plate so far this season with a .091 average in 44 at-bats. Hernandez is a very capable fielder and can play all infield positions effectively. The 18 year old Hernandez has the potential to develop into a power hitter who can hit 30 homers a season. Almonte is 22 years old and a very solid pitching prospect. His top velocity can reach about 92 MPH, he has good stuff and can strike a lot of batters out.

With the injury of Matt Joyce, the Rays will use Byrd as an everyday RF for the next month and a half. DeWitt will most likely be used as an infield utility player. "Marlon is a very professional player and I think he's excited to have the opportunity to win a championship with Tampa", Cubs' GM Jed Hoyer said. "We're obviously in a situation right now we're we need to build for the future, and I think this trade definitely helps us with that."

The Cubs will call up SS Adrian Cardenas and CF Tony Campana to the 25 man roster. Cardenas was very impressive in AAA Iowa, hitting .431 in 55 at bats with only 4 strikeouts. Campana is one of the fastest players in the league and will split duties the duties in CF with Reed Johnson.

Players to Tampa Bay
OF Marlon Byrd
2B Blake DeWitt
$5,100,000

Players to Chicago
3B Oscar Hernandez (assigned to Advanced-A Daytona)
P Wilmer Almonte (assigned to Single-A Peoria)

I will report Cubs trades and breaking news as they happen. At the end of each month in the regular season I will write an update about the team and the rest of the league. Thanks, stay tuned!

Cubs End April with 9-14 Record
May 1st, 2012

The first month of the 2012 MLB season is in the books and the Cubs sit in 4th place of the National League Central with a 9-14 record. The Milwaukee Brewers lead the division with a 17-6 record, after starting out the season 11-0. SP Jeff Samardzija has been superb on the mound with a 3-0 record and an ERA of 1.38. This is Samardzija's first season as a starter in the majors and he has certainly had no trouble with the transition from the bullpen. Veteran SP Ryan Dempster has also been great to start out the season. After a disappointing 2011 season, the soon to be 35 year old has been fantastic, he's compiled a 2-1 record with a 2.06 ERA. The rest of the Cubs starting rotation has been off to a lousy start. Opening Day starter Matt Garza has been looking nothing like an ace, he has a record of 0-5 and an ugly 5.88 ERA. Out of the bullpen, both Rafael Dolis and lefty James Russell have been solid. Closer Carlos Marmol has been lights-out with a 0.93 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 9.2 innings, he's recorded 5 saves.

22 year old SS Starlin Castro is one of the only bright spots in the Cubs lineup so far this season. Castro leads the MLB with 37 hits. Castro's double play partner, Darwin Barney has been very good at the plate as well. Barney is hitting .301 in his third big league season. 1B Bryan Lahair has shown that he can definitely be an everyday starter at the highest level, he's hit 6 homeruns with a batting average of .279. The production of the rest of the Cubs hitters has not been good. The Cubs offense has produced 66 runs, the least in the National League.

With the recent departure of Marlon Byrd, outfield prospect Brett Jackson could be called up very soon if he continues to play well in Iowa. Another prospect who has been impressive in Triple-A Iowa is 1B Anthony Rizzo, however, Cubs GM Jed Hoyer does not want to make the same mistake he made in San Diego last season by bringing up Rizzo to soon. "With Bryan hitting well, it allows to keep Anthony in Iowa until we know he's ready to take the next step," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said, "We don't want to rush him."

How do you guys like the format I used for this update? How do you guys like the use of screenshots?

Let me know about information that I could be including in the updates and also about unnecessary information that I am including... Is it necessary for me to show the standings of the whole MLB and the league leaders in every monthly update?

ANY Feedback or advice is very appreciated. Thanks!

I like the format you're using. All I can say is good luck with the Cubs, it's going to be tough!

Cubs in 5th Place, 12 Games Behind Division Leaders
June 1st, 2012

As June begins, the Cubs are sitting in 5th place of the NL Central with a record of 22-29. The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals are tied at the top of the division, both teams have 34-17 records. The Cubs managed to sweep NL Central bottom dwellers, the Houston Astros, in a 3-game series. SP Matt Garza has continued to struggle as he now possesses a 0-10 record with a 4.83 ERA. Garza has been the victim of very bad run support when he is on the mound. The Cubs average 1 run per game when Garza is pitching. Both Paul Maholm and Randy Wells pitched outstandingly in May. Maholm posted a 2.68 ERA and held opposing batters to a .184 average. Wells was equally impressive with a 2.45 ERA in 6 starts. Since joining the Cubs rotation at the end of April, Wells has been very impressive. The Cubs bullpen has arguably been the strongest part of the team thus far, with an ERA of 2.72, good enough for 3rd best in the National League.

The Cubs offense continues to have trouble scoring runs, with a total of 176 runs, which is the least in the National League. Veteran LF Alfonso Soriano has begun to turn things around at the plate as he hit .282 with 5 HR and 20 RBI in May. SS Starlin Castro is 2nd in the NL with a 64 hits this season, but he had some problems in May, hitting .243 for the duration of the month.

May News & Transactions

The Cubs did not make any major transactions in May. C Welington Castillo was called up to the major league team and C Steven Clevenger. Castillo was named NL Player of the Week in his first week in the majors this year. He hit 5 homeruns in his first 5 games, including a 14th inning walk off.

Awards
3B Adrian Cardenas had a great month and was named NL Rookie of the Month. Cardenas hit .347 with 1 HR and 18 RBI in May. With Ian Stewart struggling, Cardenas should see increased playing time at the hot corner.

Trade Rumors
1B Jeff Baker might not be a member of the Chicago Cubs for much longer. The Cubs have an abundance of capable infielders and Baker has been playing very poorly. Another player who might be on his way out soon is RF Reed Johnson. Johnson has handed in a transfer request because he is looking for a starting role. Johnson could be traded soon to make space for CF Brett Jackson, who likes like he will be ready for the MLB very soon.

I'd like to ask for a bit of comparison: how's Roy Halladay doing in your league? He's been nothing sort of atrocious in mine.
