Rebuilding the New York Mets - 2012 & Beyond
On the heels of a 5th straight loss tonight to the Nationals, I am inspired to rebuild the New York Mets, THE RIGHT WAY. By being honest with the fanbase from day one, you can pull off a rebuilding project in the biggest media market in the world. Through the magic that is OOTP 13, we shall now see that plan in action! OOC: Yeah, no elaborate backstory. That would require thought, and after being in a TV studio for nearly 4 hours today (I made my first appearance on the TV version of a radio show I do with a few of my buddies, on public access), my brain is not capable of such right now. |

New Mets GM Delgado Gets Right to Work, Acquires Collin Balester from Tigers
I don't know how he does it, but already new Mets President of Baseball Operations Tom Delgado has made a move to get his team younger. Out of favor reliever Collin Balester has been acquired from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for two veteran arms, Miguel Batista & Tim Byrdak, as well as minor league shortstop Josh Rodriguez. "Acquiring Collin is part of my plan to get us younger and start thinking for the long term" Delgado said of the deal. Balester is a career 5-16 with a 5.17 ERA in 62 appearances (22 starts), but apparently Delgado believes that he can turn his career around in New York. He leaves Detroit having never pitched a single game for them. Balester takes Batista's spot on the roster, and lefty Daniel Ray Herrera has been called up from Triple-A Buffalo to take Byrdak's place in the bullpen. However, Delgado has hinted that there could be more moves made in the first few months of the season. "We never stop exploring ways to make the team better for the long term, and my scouts are hard at work every day, recommending players for us to try and acquire. We have a great opportunity to acquire young talent and develop them, and that's exactly what we're going to do here. This may make some fans angry, but my goal is to put together a team who will be proud to wear the Mets blue, white, and orange every day and every game. My goal is to turn these young players that we go out and acquire into future heroes." Delgado said. It appears that the new President of Baseball Operations is attempting a full-fledged rebuilding job in the biggest media market in the world, and he honestly believes it can work. How will it translate to attendance? Nobody knows for sure. |

Sim #1 - Pre-Season to May 2nd (I wanted to stop at May 1st but I have an itchy trigger finger!)
Record: 13-11 (3rd place, NL East) Starting Lineup/Bench (as of 5/2) 1. CF Andres Torres (.210, 3 HR, 11 RBI) 2. 2B Daniel Murphy (.217, HR, 6 RBI) 3. 3B David Wright (.247, 3 HR, 12 RBI) 4. 1B Ike Davis (.271, 3 HR, 13 RBI) 5. RF Lucas Duda (.260, 2 HR, 13 RBI) 6. LF Jason Bay (.237, HR, 6 RBI) 7. C Josh Thole (.311, 12 RBI) 8. SS Ruben Tejada (.241, HR, 8 RBI) ----------------------------------------------- Ronny Cedeno (.229, HR, 6 RBI) Vinny Rottino (.150, HR, 4 RBI) Kirk Nieuwenheis (.500) Mike Baxter (.333) Val Pascucci (.250, 2 RBI) Pitching Staff (as of 5/2) 1. Johan Santana (2-1, 2.48) 2. R.A. Dickey (2-1, 3.12) 3. Jon Niese (2-1, 7.20) 4. Mike Pelfrey (1-2, 5.04) 5. Dillon Gee (1-2, 6.43) --------------------------------------------- LR - Daniel Ray Herrera (0-0, 4.35) MR - Collin Balester (1-0, 4.05) MR - Jon Rauch (1-3, 6.10) MR - Ramon Ramirez (1-0, 3.00) MR - Manny Acosta (1-1, 3.68) Setup - Bobby Parnell (0-0, 4.76) Closer - Frank Francisco (1-0, 9 saves, 1.13) Team Rankings (National League) Runs Scored - 103 (6th) Batting Average - .235 (14th) On Base % - .301 (13th) Home Runs - 16 (t-11th) Stolen Bases - 7 (t-14th) Runs Against - 113 (t-13th) Starting Rotation ERA - 4.47 (14th) Bullpen ERA - 3.68 (8th!) Defensive Efficiency - .681 (12th) TD's Notes: I've already succeeded where the previous regime failed. We have a semi-competent bullpen! Francisco has been awesome, while everyone else has been holding their own for the most part. We're concerned about Rauch's bloated ERA, but we'll give him a chance to right the ship. As for the rotation, I'm not happy with our starters conceding so many runs. Niese and Pelf have to get the ERA's down, and while they're at it, maybe they can teach Dillon Gee how to pitch. Offensively, you could say we've been...well, offensive! (rimshot, awkward silence) I'll get my coat... Then again, we play in a pitcher's park. There's no hope for offensive success at Citi Field, so I'm gonna have to complain to Mr. Wilpon and maybe we can bring the fences in some more. Unfortunately, we lost a good right-handed bat (against lefties at least) in Scott Hairston to a back injury. He should be ready to go in a week to 10 days. Kirk Nieuwenheis was called up to replace him on the roster. However, I'm considering designating Rottino & Pascucci for assignment and thus Nieuwenheis might stick on this team for the time being. Nothing interesting on the waiver wire, nor is anybody on the trading block just yet. We'll probably wait until June to see where we're at, then go from there. |

Sim #2 - May 2nd to June 1st
Record: 27-24 (3rd place, NL East, 3.5 behind Miami & Atlanta) Wildcard: 4th Place, 3.5 behind Miami & Atlanta Lineup & Bench (as of 6/1) 1. CF Andres Torres (.215, 7 HR, 20 RBI) 2. 2B Daniel Murphy (.261, 3 HR, 16 RBI) 3. 3B David Wright (.207, 4 HR, 19 RBI) 4. 1B Ike Davis (.251, 7 HR, 26 RBI) 5. RF Lucas Duda (.265, 5 HR, 26 RBI) 6. LF Scott Hairston (.290, 2 HR, 10 RBI) 7. C Josh Thole (.301, HR, 24 RBI) 8. SS Ruben Tejada (.237, 2 HR, 18 RBI) ------------------------------------------------------- Ronny Cedeno (.228, HR, 12 RBI) Jason Bay (.190, 3 HR, 16 RBI) Kirk Nieuwenheis (.353, HR, 2 RBI) Mike Baxter (.189, RBI) Pitching Staff (as of 6/1) 1. Johan Santana (7-1, 2.70) 2. R.A. Dickey (6-1, 2.71) 3. Jon Niese (3-4, 4.71) 4. Mike Pelfrey (2-3, 4.50) 5. Dillon Gee (2-6, 4.82) ---------------------------------------------------------- Long Relief - Ramon Ramirez (1-1, 2.35) Long Relief - Josh Spence (0-0, 0.00) Middle Relief - Collin Balester (1-0, 1.80) Middle Relief - Daniel Ray Herrera (0-0, 2.21) Middle Relief - Manny Acosta (1-3, 3.86) Middle Relief - Ryan Mattheus (0-0, 4.50) Setup - Bobby Parnell (0-2, 7.23) Closer - Frank Francisco (2-0, 15 saves, 1.26) Team Rankings (NL) Runs Scored - 212 (9th) Batting Average - .233 (14th) On Base % - .303 (14th) Home Runs - 37 (13th) Stolen Bases - 13 (t-15th) Runs Against - 204 (5th) Starters ERA - 3.74 (8th) Bullpen ERA - 3.20 (4th) Defensive Efficiency - .702 (3rd) TD's Notes: Notice you don't see Jon Rauch there anymore? Yep, we traded him! San Diego took him and minor leaguers Matt Den Dekker & Darrell Ceciliani in exchange for a live young arm in Josh Spence and solid 3B prospect, Jedd Gyorko. We also claimed Ryan Mattheus from Washington off of waivers. He's a solid arm and can only help add depth to our bullpen. We see Norichika Aoki on the trading block from the Brewers, but I'm not completely sure if we are going to make a play for him. 30 years old and has two more years on his contract. We may also make a play for free agent Michael Wuertz. He's got great stuff, but not much else. Still, I'd like to see what he's got left. I sent Wuertz a 2 year deal worth around 1.8 mil total ($920,000 for the rest of this season, $965,000 for next season). If we sign him, we'll most likely option Spence down to AAA and let him pitch regularly there. Very happy with what I've seen from our pitching (for the most part), except for Dillon Gee. I will definitely be looking to add a 5th starter before the deadline, because we cannot hope to finish well when our 5th starter is one of the worst in the majors! |

BREAKING NEWS: Ike Davis Out 9 Months With Broken Kneecap, Delgado Scrambles to Acquire Carp From Mariners! After breaking his kneecap in the Mets' victory over the Cardinals today, Ike Davis will miss up to 9 months of action. This has forced Tom Delgado to scramble to find a replacement. I'd say he found a pretty passable replacement, as he dealt 5 minor leaguers, including Jeurys Familia & Aderlin Rodriguez to the Mariners for 1B/LF Mike Carp and top pitching prospect Danny Hultzen. Carp was part of the Mets organization from 2004 to 2008 before being traded as part of the deal that brought relievers J.J. Putz and Sean Green to New York. The amount of prospects gained in return for Carp and Hultzen was enough to sway the trade into an acceptable level for Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik. "We are getting back 5 talented prospects in exchange for two players. I'll take my chances" Zduriencik said of the deal. Carp will join the Mets at Citi Field for the remainder of the series with St. Louis, and Hultzen is expected to join Triple-A Buffalo until the Mets are ready to call him up. In other news, the Mets completed the minor league contract signings of relievers Yhency Brazoban & Ryan Cole, Catchers Orlando Mercado & Dusty Ryan, and Shortstop Deivi Batista. Brazoban has been called up to the big club with Josh Spence being optioned to Buffalo. Cole & Mercado reported to Double-A Binghamton, while Ryan reported to Triple-A Buffalo. Meanwhile, Deivi Batista reported to Single-A Savannah. Last edited by Magus978; 07-18-2012 at 01:35 PM. |

Good luck with this one. Having grown up in New Jersey & having more than a few Met fan friends from Long Island, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Mets. Interested to see what you do here.

Rangers trade Starting Pitcher Holland to Mets for Offense Help in Torres, Cedeno Tom Delgado has struck again. The Mets made another move to get younger as they acquired struggling starter Derek Holland from the Rangers as well as a minor league arm in exchange for two veterans to help Texas's offense and try to push them back to the postseason. Andres Torres and Ronny Cedeno were sent to the Lone Star State in the deal. Torres was hitting .220 with 9 HR and 24 RBI, and Ronny Cedeno was hitting .212 with 16 RBI in mostly pinch-hitting duty. Derek Holland comes to the Mets with a dismal 2-8 record and a 5.33 ERA. Mets officials are optimistic that Holland can turn his season around and become a solid #2 or #3 starter. The Mets seem to be building for next season and beyond, especially with Mike Pelfrey out 3 months with a torn triceps, and Josh Thole on the DL with a sprained ankle. More Dealin' - Hairston Traded to Kansas City for Mitch Maier Another minor deal was completed late last night as the Mets acquired right fielder Mitch Maier and reliever Kelvin Herrera from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Scott Hairston and two fringe prospects - Juan Lagares & Michael Fulmer. Scouts spoke highly of Maier's contact ability, and believe he could be a useful player at Citi Field, where power is not necessary to succeed. Last edited by Magus978; 07-18-2012 at 03:14 PM. |

Sim #3 - June 1st to July 1st
Record: 38-41 (3rd, 11.5 behind Atlanta) Wildcard: 5th, 4.5 behind Miami/Chicago Lineup/Bench (as of 7/1) 1. CF Darin Mastroianni (.214, 13 RBI) 2. 2B Daniel Murphy (.280, 5 HR, 24 RBI) 3. LF Lucas Duda (.272, 9 HR, 41 RBI) 4. 1B Mike Carp (.197, 9 HR, 25 RBI) 5. 3B David Wright (.211, 7 HR, 32 RBI) 6. C Dusty Ryan (.237, HR, 8 RBI 7. RF Mitch Maier (.200) 8. SS Ruben Tejada (.221, 4 HR, 28 RBI) --------------------------------------------------- J.R. Towles (.286) Reese Havens (.333, 2 RBI) Jason Bay (.189, 4 HR, 19 RBI) Kirk Nieuwenheis (.296, HR, 5 RBI) Pitching Staff (as of 7/1) 1. Johan Santana (9-3, 2.81) 2. R.A. Dickey (9-4, 3.16) 3. Derek Holland (2-1, 3.05) 4. Jon Niese (4-8, 5.40) 5. Danny Hultzen (0-2, 5.74) ------------------------------------------------------- Long Relief - Bobby Parnell (0-3, 6.37) Middle Relief - Collin Balester (1-0, 3.22) Middle Relief - Michael Wuertz (0-1, 14.40) Middle Relief - Kelvin Herrera (0-0, 4.50) Middle Relief - Manny Acosta (1-3, 4.15) Setup - Daniel Ray Herrera (0-1, 2.60) Closer - Frank Francisco (3-1, 20 saves, 1.58) Team Rankings (NL) Runs Scored - 320 (13th) Batting Average - .231 (Worst) On Base % - .302 (15th) Home Runs - 61 (14th) Stolen Bases - 24 (15th) Runs Against - 336 (7th) Starters ERA - 4.02 (10th) Bullpen ERA - 3.67 (8th) Defensive Efficiency - .697 (3rd) TD's Notes: Well...I guess we still need to solve our offensive problems. I feel the only way we could potentially do so is to trade one of Santana or Dickey. Unfortunately, Santana isn't willing to be a palsie and waive his no-trade clause. Holland has had a pretty good start to life as a Met, I knew Citi Field would be a helpful sight to him. We still have some bullpen issues, as I traded Ramon Ramirez to make way for another young arm in Kelvin Herrera. I believe he'll be fine once he starts finding his groove. We do need to find another middle/back end of the rotation guy though, because Niese is having a dismal season, and Hultzen is struggling to acclimate to major league hitting. We are continuing to comb the waiver wire and the trading block, and we may unload a big piece or two when the deadline comes if the right deal can be made. Otherwise, I have no problem going into the rest of the season with what I have and hoping we can break .500. Doesn't mean that we won't stop looking for ways to improve the team though, I just won't sell our top prospects for a top player, especially since we're not in a position to seriously contend until we can improve our offense. Minor Moves Made Acquired: J.R. Towles, Darin Mastroianni, Mike Paulk Traded: Ramon Ramirez, fringe prospects |

Francisco is Lone Mets All-Star, President of Baseball Operations Delgado Furious at Dickey Snub! Frank Francisco is going to the All Star Game in Kansas City. R.A. Dickey is not, and he's got someone in his corner. Mets President of Baseball Operations Tom Delgado voiced his discontent with NL manager Tony La Russa for not selecting Dickey to be part of the National League pitching staff. "I'm pretty sure that La Russa doesn't have anyone that can catch the best knuckleball in all of baseball, and that's a damn shame. That's a cop-out if that's the case, because R.A. deserves to be there" Delgado said of the All Star snub. Dickey was less angry and more relieved to have time to rest before the second half of the season. "I'm not concerned about it at all. It is what it is, and I'm ready to focus on pitching my best for the Mets in the second half of the season" Dickey said. Dickey is 9-5 with a 3.17 ERA this season in 17 starts. |

R.A. Dickey (11-6, 3.28) 2. Derek Holland (6-1, 1.58) 3. Jon Niese (4-9, 4.72) 4. Danny Hultzen (2-4, 3.86) 5. Thankfully the Derek Holland move is turning out to be a stroke of genius. He's 6-0 with a 0.89 ERA in his last 7 starts! Unfortunately, Johan Santana will miss two weeks more with recurring back spasms. That closed our window of opportunity to trade him this season. We'll try again in the offseason, because I still think he can get us at least one good young arm. There wasn't anybody out there who we could have gotten to shore up our offense, nor could we get another starter for the rotation. We'll try to move Niese before the waiver trade deadline, but at the same time I think someone will try to claim him before we can get rid of him. |

Next year, kids. Next year! Even with the season slipping away from us, I feel I have accomplished part of the goal. We have plenty of young talent on the team, trying to develop their craft. Now we have to harness that young talent and turn them into long term winners. September is a great time to see what we have as far as the future. That's where guys like Cesar Puello, Martin Perez, and Joshua Satin come in. I wanna see what these kids can do and if they can bring it for the next few years. We'll also see who'll become a free agent and maybe, just maybe if all the cards fall right, improve our offense (not bloody likely). |

Tons of injuries late. Hence why you don't see Ike Davis, Daniel Murphy, Mitch Maier, Kirk Nieuwenheis, Bobby Parnell, or even Zach Lutz on the end of season stats. They all did terrible anyway, so who cares? Mr. Alderson, I hope you've been reading (yeah right). THIS is how you build a bullpen. 4th best Bullpen ERA in the National League, least runs against. Now if only we had some sort of offense to go along with an awesome pitching staff. My assessment of this season is simply this: I'm so demanding we bring the fences in, or I'm resigning. We need to balance things out and generate more offense. Also, I can safely say that no position player's job is safe for next season. If I can make a deal to improve the team, I will sacrifice them to make it happen. Yes, even you David Wright. You may be the face of the franchise, but you are not exempt from anything. END OF 2012 REGULAR SEASON! |

BREAKING NEWS: Two Superstars Dealt! Wright to Seattle, King Felix to New York! In his offseason conference call, Tom Delgado declared that nobody was safe, not even the face of the franchise, David Wright. He said if the right deal came along, he'd do it in a heartbeat. Well, we have a pulse. With that pulse, a King comes to New York! King Felix, that is. In a blockbuster deal sending David Wright, Frank Francisco, and two good prospects to the Mariners, the New York Mets acquire the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. "We are extremely pleased to welcome Felix Hernandez to New York" Delgado said in a hastily arranged conference call. "Felix is a proven winner, and as much as it pained me to deal the face of the New York Mets to Seattle, it's a deal that I simply could not pass up. To get the best pitcher in all of baseball is not something you don't try to go for" Delgado added. |

Pre-Free Agency Transactions
Jason Bay traded to the Rangers for Mitch Moreland Dillon Gee, Mike Pelfrey, Zach Lutz non-tendered and released Mitch Maier, Mike Baxter, Cesar Puello, & Josh Satin optioned to Buffalo Top 10 Free Agents 1. Roy Oswalt (SP) 2. Jeremy Guthrie (SP) 3. Robinson Cano (2B) 4. Joe Saunders (SP) 5. Erik Bedard (SP) 6. Brandon McCarthy (SP) 7. Carlos Quentin (LF) 8. Lance Berkman (1B) 9. Mike Napoli (C) 10. Edwin Jackson (SP) TD's Notes: We have the money to get one of the top free agents, but I'm not interested in a bidding war. If I had to pick a guy to go after, it'd be Cano or Quentin. We need a 2B and we need a LF. I do think we can acquire one of those pieces in a trade though. I will be putting an offer on Cano though, just to cover our bases. One more piece of good news: I persuaded the powers that be to do some more adjustments to Citi Field, make it more offense friendly. Lots of unnoticeable changes, pushed the fences about 5-10 feet. |

Corban Joseph Selected by Mets in Rule 5 Draft, is Cano Coming to Mentor Him? Is this a hint of things to come from the Mets? In today's Rule 5 draft, the Mets lost Chris R. Young, but they picked up a 24 year old 2nd baseman who has been held down in the New York Yankees minor league system. Corban Joseph was selected with the 11th pick in the Rule 5 draft, and Mets officials were ecstatic to be able to pick him. "When a guy like that is mired in a team's minor league system, it's very hard to resist not taking a flier on him. Corban has good fundamentals and is a leader in the minor league clubhouse, and we feel that will translate well to the major league level" Mets President of Baseball Operations Tom Delgado said in a statement. This could be the first of two raids of the Yankees, as the Mets have reportedly offered Robinson Cano a 5 year contract starting at $20,000,000. |

BREAKING NEWS - Robinson Cano Taking His Talents to Queens All those Yankees fans now have a new reason to hate the Mets. In what could be seen as a stunning development, Robinson Cano has agreed to sign a 5 year, $105,000,000 contract with the New York Mets. This will come as a punch in the gut to the Yankees who were hoping to re-sign him to a 9 year deal to keep him in Yankee pinstripes forever. Instead, Cano will be bringing one of the game's best bats to Citi Field. "I believe signing Robinson (Cano) shows that we're making a commitment to winning this season and beyond. Anytime you can add both Felix Hernandez & Robinson Cano to the roster in the same offseason, you've sent a big statement to the rest of the league" Mets President of Baseball Operations Tom Delgado said in another hastily-arranged press conference. Continuing the coincidence of former Yankees joining their crosstown rivals, the Mets announced the signing of left fielder Melky Cabrera earlier in the press conference. Cabrera's deal is for 2 years at a total of $3,885,000. Also signed was another left fielder, Derrick Mitchell. His deal is 2 years, $3,100,000. Last edited by Magus978; 07-19-2012 at 12:54 PM. |

I once signed a Cano as a free agent for the Mets in some other game. Turned out to be a gigantic bust. I acquired Gregor Blanco that same off season, and while Blanco became a regular, Cano ended up benched.
Good luck to you, though. :-P |
