May 1st, 2013 Jays Stats and Musings

The Jays were cruising along nicely until they lost both their middle infielders on April 16th. The Jays were 9-6 and 1 game behind the Yankees. Since then Jose Reyes is back in the line-up and Brett Lawrie made a full recovery from an injury that took place in the exhibition game portion of the World Baseball Classic. Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion have carried most of the offense and the new Jays pitching staff is holding its own, but has not been spectactular.

Currently on 3B Maicer Izturis is out, and should be back in a week. Lawrie is swinging a hot bat hitting .450 (9-20) in his last 5 games with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs. JP Arencibia has only 1 hit in his last 21 at bats over those same 5 games.

The Jays went 15-14 in May but were 7 games above .500 (25-18) on May 18th. The Jays went 4-9 after that and are 3-7 in the last 10 games. A big part of the recent months struggles has been in the bullpen, but the cupboard is pretty bare for relief help in AAA with Aaron Loup and Michael Schwimer both struggling. Josh Johnson has been great as he is 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA in his past 3 starts, but we need more from R A Dickey and Mark Buehrle if we are going to the post season. Drew Hutchison will be coming off the 60 day D/L soon, but will need 30 days of rehab before he can help. Buehrle injured himself in his last start, so we will need to see what the diagnosis is on him.

1) R A Dickey
2) Josh Johnson
3) Brandon Morrow
4) Mark Buehrle
5) Esmil Rogers.

Rogers is in for J A Happ, Happ goes into middle relief. No help coming from AAA soon.

Rajai Davis is the obvious move to AAA once he comes off the DL. Loewen has done very good in a back up role, he will stay up and let Brennan Boesch continue beating up AAA pitchers.

The Jays had their best month of the season so far going 15-12 and getting within reach of the Wild Card position but long term injuries to SPs Mark Buehrle and R A Dickey could make things difficult for the Jays to hold on. We had to scramble the roster a lot by moving under-performing players that were out of option years, forcing us to make some deals. I am not sure they made us better right now, but it will make our off season a little more flexible. As well Brandon Morrow was injured in his last start and his injury diagnosis is pending. With Morrow healthy our Rotation looks like...
1) Josh Johnson
2) Brandon Morrow
3) Tom Gorzelanny
4) Esmil Rogers
5) JA Happ

The Jays were 13-13 in the month of July but lost very little ground in the AL East and the AL Wild Card spot. The Jays also had a key injury when RF Jose Bautista went down in early July, he will be out until mid August. If the Jays can still hang on until Bautista gets back, they could challenge for not only the Wild Card spot, but even possibly the division. This would be quite an accomplishment considering that the Jays have SP Mark Buehrle and SP R A Dickey out for the season. The Jays were able to make a deal to get A J Burnett, he is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in 3 starts since the trade.

Coach Gibbons has determined his rotation as follows:

1) Josh Johnson
2) Brandon Morrow
3) A J Burnett
4) Tom Gorzelanny
5) Esmil Rogers

Gibbons primary roster is as follows

1) 2B Emilo Bonifacio
2) SS Jose Reyes
3) 1B Edwin Encarnacion
4) CF Colby Rasmus
5) 3B Brett Lawrie
6) RF Melky Cabrera
7) LF Adam Lind
8) C J P Arencibia
9) DH Adam LaRoche

The Jays went 15-13 in August and kept them in the Wild Card Race. The Jays at one point were 11 games above .500 and 3 games back of the dasteredly Yankees, but failed to hold onto the momentum.

Pitching, and particularily starting pitching was the concern in August. AJ Burnett was 1-4 with a 7.98 ERA, Josh Johnson was 4-0 with a 4.08 ERA, Brandon Morrow was 0-3 with a 6.08 ERA, Tom Gorzelanny was 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA and Esmil Rogers was 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA. Gibbons is going to start September with the following rotation.

1) Josh Johnson
2) Brandon Morrow
3) A J Burnett
4) Esmil Rogers
5) J A Happ

Offensively, they Jays are still producing even though RF Jose Bautista has missed some time. The Jays got some good months out of Edwin Encarnacion (.327 11 HR 26 RBI) Brett Lawrie (.324 10 HR 19 RBI) Jose Reyes (.271 4 HR 15 RBI) Adam Lind (.302 7 HR 16 RBI)

Hey Big T: You're obviously going much, much faster than normal this time around. Do you find that makes the game more or less immersive for you?

Definitely less immersive, but I am going to keep my Reds dynasty going as well where I go much slower. I thought I would try a 3rd, but with FHM once its completed in September and I have decided which way I will go. With the Reds one, I find myself sometimes impatient to see how my moves turn out LOL, which is usually bad...
