May 1st, 2013 Jays Stats and Musings
The Jays were cruising along nicely until they lost both their middle infielders on April 16th. The Jays were 9-6 and 1 game behind the Yankees. Since then Jose Reyes is back in the line-up and Brett Lawrie made a full recovery from an injury that took place in the exhibition game portion of the World Baseball Classic. Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion have carried most of the offense and the new Jays pitching staff is holding its own, but has not been spectactular. Currently on 3B Maicer Izturis is out, and should be back in a week. Lawrie is swinging a hot bat hitting .450 (9-20) in his last 5 games with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs. JP Arencibia has only 1 hit in his last 21 at bats over those same 5 games.

June 1st, 2013 Jays Stats and Musings
The Jays went 15-14 in May but were 7 games above .500 (25-18) on May 18th. The Jays went 4-9 after that and are 3-7 in the last 10 games. A big part of the recent months struggles has been in the bullpen, but the cupboard is pretty bare for relief help in AAA with Aaron Loup and Michael Schwimer both struggling. Josh Johnson has been great as he is 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA in his past 3 starts, but we need more from R A Dickey and Mark Buehrle if we are going to the post season. Drew Hutchison will be coming off the 60 day D/L soon, but will need 30 days of rehab before he can help. Buehrle injured himself in his last start, so we will need to see what the diagnosis is on him.
It looks like Gibbons is going with the following rotation to start June. 1) R A Dickey 2) Josh Johnson 3) Brandon Morrow 4) Mark Buehrle 5) Esmil Rogers. Rogers is in for J A Happ, Happ goes into middle relief. No help coming from AAA soon.
I will see if Michael Schwimer can help us and demote Ricky Romero except Schwimer is out long term with an injury. The only help we can get the pen is either via waivers or a trade.
Blanco is simply not working out, we will move him to AAA and bring up Thole. We will see if we can move Blanco via trade as he will need to clear waivers before going to AAA Buffalo.
Would like to upgrade Izturis, but not really much improvement in AAA. Will leave the infield as is.
Rajai Davis is the obvious move to AAA once he comes off the DL. Loewen has done very good in a back up role, he will stay up and let Brennan Boesch continue beating up AAA pitchers. |

July 1st Toronto Blue Jays Stats and Musings.
The Jays had their best month of the season so far going 15-12 and getting within reach of the Wild Card position but long term injuries to SPs Mark Buehrle and R A Dickey could make things difficult for the Jays to hold on. We had to scramble the roster a lot by moving under-performing players that were out of option years, forcing us to make some deals. I am not sure they made us better right now, but it will make our off season a little more flexible. As well Brandon Morrow was injured in his last start and his injury diagnosis is pending. With Morrow healthy our Rotation looks like... 1) Josh Johnson 2) Brandon Morrow 3) Tom Gorzelanny 4) Esmil Rogers 5) JA Happ
Mark Buehrle out 4 months, R A Dickey out 6 months, Brandon Morrow diagnosis pending, looks like we are in trouble at the starting pitchers position. Jesse Litsch is out for 3 more weeks as well. Drabek and McGowan are likely to get some starts.
I do believe our bullpen has more talent on it today, then we did at the start of the season. Still not a lot of depth, but I am happy with the Miller acquisition.
Arencibia out another 2 weeks, Navarro will have to stay as he is on his last option year.
Need more production from 2nd base as Bonifacio and Izturis platoon. Lawrie doing well after missing the 1st 3 weeks.
We certainly improved our depth with Sweeney and Boesch. Loewen has played well in a limited role. |

August 1st, 2013 Toronto Blue Jays Stats and Musings
The Jays were 13-13 in the month of July but lost very little ground in the AL East and the AL Wild Card spot. The Jays also had a key injury when RF Jose Bautista went down in early July, he will be out until mid August. If the Jays can still hang on until Bautista gets back, they could challenge for not only the Wild Card spot, but even possibly the division. This would be quite an accomplishment considering that the Jays have SP Mark Buehrle and SP R A Dickey out for the season. The Jays were able to make a deal to get A J Burnett, he is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in 3 starts since the trade. Coach Gibbons has determined his rotation as follows: 1) Josh Johnson 2) Brandon Morrow 3) A J Burnett 4) Tom Gorzelanny 5) Esmil Rogers Gibbons primary roster is as follows 1) 2B Emilo Bonifacio 2) SS Jose Reyes 3) 1B Edwin Encarnacion 4) CF Colby Rasmus 5) 3B Brett Lawrie 6) RF Melky Cabrera 7) LF Adam Lind 8) C J P Arencibia 9) DH Adam LaRoche
No adjustments to make at this time. Although or Rotation hasn't been great, overall it could be much worse. Still have issues in the bullpen so will move Drew Hutchison to AAA and promote Aaron Loup to the Jays.
Dioner Navarro has not provided the Jays a lot of offense, because he is in his last year of his deal and has no option years, we will pass him through waivers and promote Josh Thole.
No changes to make here, would like to upgrade Izturis, but neither Kawasaki or McCoy are upgrades.
A few injuries to overcome, Sweeney could replace Brentz, but Brennan Boesch will be back this early August. |

September 1st, 2013 Toronto Blue Jays Stats and Musings
The Jays went 15-13 in August and kept them in the Wild Card Race. The Jays at one point were 11 games above .500 and 3 games back of the dasteredly Yankees, but failed to hold onto the momentum. Pitching, and particularily starting pitching was the concern in August. AJ Burnett was 1-4 with a 7.98 ERA, Josh Johnson was 4-0 with a 4.08 ERA, Brandon Morrow was 0-3 with a 6.08 ERA, Tom Gorzelanny was 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA and Esmil Rogers was 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA. Gibbons is going to start September with the following rotation. 1) Josh Johnson 2) Brandon Morrow 3) A J Burnett 4) Esmil Rogers 5) J A Happ Offensively, they Jays are still producing even though RF Jose Bautista has missed some time. The Jays got some good months out of Edwin Encarnacion (.327 11 HR 26 RBI) Brett Lawrie (.324 10 HR 19 RBI) Jose Reyes (.271 4 HR 15 RBI) Adam Lind (.302 7 HR 16 RBI)
The Jays will call up Brett Cecil and Ricky Romero from AAA based on success they have had in AAA this season. They will likely simply get REL roles as we go into September expanded rosters.
The Jays will call up Jeremy Jeffress from AAA. Jeffress has 22 saves in AA this season and was good in 7 innings in AAA, its time to see what he can do. The Jays will also add REL Mickey Storey to the 40 man roster from AAA. The 27 year old Storey is 6-2 with 28 saves, a 3.13 ERA in 54 (AAA) games.
Although I did waive and designate Navarro, we will add him to the 40 man roster for the stretch run in case we run into trouble with either Arencibia or Thole.
We will call up Munenori Kawasaki who can add some speed to the lineup for the stretch run, should be used as a pinch runner late in games. We will also add Mike McCoy who can provide some extra defense depth and range at 3B late in games.
The Jays will recall Brent Brentz from AAA Buffalo, Brentz will add some pinch hit power from the Right side, he has 24 HRs this season at various levels. |

Hey Big T: You're obviously going much, much faster than normal this time around. Do you find that makes the game more or less immersive for you?
