When It Was A Game - A 1976 No-Expansion Dynasty
NOTE: This Prelude (with some minor tweaks) was written four long years (and two less kids) ago for a dynasty that never got completed. I was going to write a brand new one for this, but in reading this over - I still feel the exactly the same way. I hope you like it, as I truly believe this will be my last work. Prelude I really have no business writing this. I have very little spare time anymore that my wife and family doesn't already have control of. There is grass to be mowed, cars to be fixed, Softball and T-Ball games to be coached... Yet, I just can't stay away. I love the game of baseball. I won't lie. Not the over-priced, over-marketed, steroid mess of today. I can do without the juiced players, the smaller ballparks and the 15-11 softball scores. You can give me a 2-1 pitching duel anytime. Collecting baseball cards as a child, watching my heroes of the 70's & 80's on television and imagining I was one of them. Eddie Murray, Mike Schmidt, Johnny Bench, George Brett, Nolan Ryan and Fred Lynn were my idols and I wished to be just like them - smashing wiffle balls over the house and losing more than a few dozen to what we called "the ball eating tree". Alas, bum knees and marginal ability left me to relive this era over and over in my head. That's part of the reason I decided to start in 1976. Salaries aren't ridiculous yet, and steroids are not as much as an influence as the athletes of today. I plan on keeping the league power numbers lower to simulate just how baseball might have been in a non-steroid era. So what can you expect from this? I'm not sure. Everybody seems to have their own favorite format when it comes to dynasties - so I decided to take what I felt were the best qualities from each. Dare I say, this is essentially 2 or 3 dynasties in one - Something for the in-depth readers, the stat-junkies and the fictional minor league managers. My hopes are that there will be something for everyone in here, (but probably everyone will hate it) and that you might feel inspired to write about your favorite players of the era. This will be my Opus, if you will. My final dynasty work. I am just getting too damn old to be putting the month of effort in setting up my dynasty just the way I want. That being said - I will be putting all of my effort into this and not throw out a crappy product. The road may be a long one and it may take forever to get there, but it's the ride that counts and when I am old and gray, I want to be able to look back and say I was a part of history - so to speak. Because history itself doesn't change, until it happens in my retro-reality. Next up you will get an overview of important happenings in the league circa Jan-March 1976. I won't insult you and say I wrote these, but merely transferred them from baseballlibrary.com (a great chronology resource). Then I may throw some Spring Training happenings followed by team summaries from fictional journalist Kevin Moss from the fictional USA Plain Beacon Journal Dealer Gazette Telegraph. So send any fictional hate mail his way, not mine. |

Jan 4 - Executives of the International Amateur Baseball Association (IABA) meet in Mexico City to end a long-standing feud between delegations‚ creating in the process a new organization named the Asociacion Internacional de Beisbol Amateur (AINBA). With the United States returning to the IABA fold‚ after a several-year absence‚ the first AINBA World Championships are scheduled for Cartagena‚ Colombia. Manuel Gonzalez Guerra of Cuba is named the first AINBA president. Jan 9 - Charles Ruppert‚ Giants VP and son-in-law of Horace Stoneham‚ announces the sale of the team to a Toronto group for $13.3 million. The fans' outrage prompts San Francisco mayor George Moscone to get a preliminary injunction preventing the move. Jan 14 - Ted Turner completes the purchase of 100 percent of the Atlanta Braves. Jan 22 - Pitchers Robin Roberts and Bob Lemon are voted into the Hall of Fame. Jan 27 - Astronomer Philip Dukower discovers what appears to be a huge comet approximately 7 miles in diameter heading towards Earth. He predicts that the comet is not on a collision course with Earth but could be visible to the naked eye in late March as it passes the Earth. Being a huge baseball fan, Dukower called the comet, "Babe". Feb 1 - East Lansing police arrest Dodger reliever Mike Marshall for disobeying the orders set by the Michigan State University police prohibiting him from taking batting practice. MSU feared he would hit balls too far and injure students on an adjacent tennis court. Marshall protests that it is against his rights as an MSU instructor and files a lawsuit against the school. Feb 2 - The Special Veterans Committee selects old-time players Roger Connor and Fred Lindstrom‚ and umpire Cal Hubbard‚ for Cooperstown. Hubbard becomes the first man elected to both the Football and Baseball Halls of Fame. Feb 4 - Federal Judge John W. Oliver upholds Peter Seitz's decision in the Andy Messersmith-Dave McNally free agency case. Feb 9 - Oscar Charleston is selected for the Hall of Fame by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues. Scientists believe that the comet will be visible for millions (weather permitting) on the evening of March 28th. Feb 23 - ML owners announce that spring training will not open until a new labor contract is agreed upon. Mar 1 - White Sox owner Bill Veeck opens training camp in Sarasota‚ Florida‚ but participation is limited to nonroster players. Mar 2 - The Cards trade 2B Ted Sizemore to the Dodgers for OF Willie Crawford. Mar 4 - In a last-minute deal‚ the Giants are bought for $8 million by Bob Lurie and Bud Herseth‚ assuring that team will stay in San Francisco. Mar 17 - Commissioner Kuhn orders teams to open spring training camps as soon as possible. All teams will comply within 48 hours. Mar 20 - Leo Durocher‚ hired to manage the Yokohama Taiyo Whales (Japanese League)‚ is sick with hepatitis and asks for a 5-week delay in reporting. The Lip receives a telegram from the Whales stating: Since the championship starts in 20 days‚ it's better if you stay home and take care of yourself for the remainder of the season." Mar 28 - A nearly completed Mets-Dodgers trade‚ involving ace pitchers Tom Seaver and Don Sutton‚ is leaked by the New York press. The subsequent public furor causes the Mets to abandon the deal. In a spectacular display, the comet affectionately called "Babe" by it's many supporters, streaks through the night sky - much closer to the earth than any comet has come before. The resulting magnetic disturbance knocks out power and disrupts controllers across North America. Apr 2 - The A's trade prospective free agents Reggie Jackson and Ken Holtzman‚ together with a minor league pitcher‚ to the Orioles for OF Don Baylor and pitchers Mike Torrez and Paul Mitchell. Apr 7 - At Aloha Stadium in Hawaii‚ a controversy arises about metal cleats prior to a PCL game with Tacoma. Despite the ban on the cleats in the stadium‚ Tacoma P Bill Butler insists on wearing them and stadium officials switch off the lights during warm-up. Thirty minutes to game‚ umpire Bill Lawton awards a forfeit to Tacoma since the home team is responsible for playing conditions. The PCL will uphold the forfeit‚ but minor league prexy Bobby Bragan will overrule it (according to historian Rich Marazzi). |

Notes
August 8, 2014: You may have stumbled onto this thread recently and noticed that some of the thanks/news/stories do not match up in the beginning. This is because I currently reworking the dynasty with the same base file and felt it a little silly to create another thread when I can just edit and fix this one. It should all equal out in the end.

That is much appreciated.
I have always planned on this being my last attempt at a dynasty and I think I have to content just right -- not too much, not too little. I want everyone to be able to know what their favorite player of that era is doing. So if there is anyone you are curious about - let me know and I'll keep tabs on him. I just discovered your Blue Jays dynasty recently and now I am currently debating making a stripped down 2014 version of a Indians dynasty similar to yours in addition to this one. All credit goes to you and your awesome work. Thanks again. |
