Spring Training Opens

March 18th, 1902

Not only were the Superbas clearly not prepared for their first game, but the prize addition to the team, Sam Mertes, was hurt in a collision on the base paths and will miss the next four weeks of Spring Training.

Pittsburgh won 8-4.

WP - Rube Waddell (1-0)
LP - Bill Donovan (0-1)

Spring Record - 0-1

Alright, Brooklyn. Here's hoping for an improved record this season! I believe in the "bums."

Just when it looked like another thumping for Brooklyn, the Superbas exploded for an 8 run 8th inning, capped by a three-run homer by Jimmy Sheckard.

Then, just when it looked like Brooklyn was going to win two in a row for the first time this spring, Harry MacNeal gave up a 2-out, 2-run homer to Duane Hennessey to give the Beaneaters the 10-9 walk-off win.

WP - Vic Willis (2-0)
LP - Harry MacNeal (0-1)

Spring Record - 2-10

Think of it this way: You're getting the bad luck out of the way now so you can roll through the regular season
