MLHR: Major League Historical Replay... what if?

Hello everyone,

My name is Matt (formerly known as Matt from TN), creator of the one and only Time Warp Baseball. After an 8-9 year hiatus, I've rejoined the OOTP Dynasty community because, well, I love this stuff. I have brought an idea that I had almost 10 years ago back from the dead and given it a few tweaks.

In Major League Historical Replay (MLHR), I will be replaying Major League history beginning in 1876 through the modern day... with a few twists. First, all players will play their entire careers with the team they debuted with. So Babe Ruth will be a lifetime Red Sox, Rod Carew a Twin, Roberto Alomar a Padre and Randy Johnson an Expo, just to name a few.

I will also ensure that no player starts his rookie season older than 25 to ensure that they have the potential for a long career. That will get particularly interesting when we see players such as Satchel Paige. I have also turned off injuries and player development. I will manually age the players at the same rate beginning at age 35... same for everyone.

In addition to that, there will be a 162-game schedule every year and I will attempt to normalize statistics to resemble those of the modern day. We will have 5-man rotations and a full 6-man bullpen. There will be no park factors, believing that those factors are already built into the players' actual career statistics.

The goal of this league is to have fun reliving baseball history, get to know some of the more obscure players and to see which teams would have had the best organizations if players were never traded away or allowed to leave via free agency.

There will only be a National League, and therefore no World Series, until 1901. And I plan to add expansion teams on schedule. Once we have enough history under our belts, we will even start a Hall of Fame.

Beware that with so few pitchers in the 1870's, I am forced to use some fictional pitchers initially. As more pitchers join the league, I will delete all fictional players once and for all. Rest assured that their ratings are not that great so teams with more "real" MLB pitchers should initially have the advantage.

After much deliberation, I have decided to name the 1876 teams after their eventual modern day franchise names (for example, the 1876 Boston Red Stockings will actually be called the Atlanta Braves). That being said, I will take some liberties in determining which modern day franchise each pre-1901 team relates to. After all, it's all in fun.

Moving on...

I plan to preview every season with information on the team's new players and perhaps their starting lineup, rotation and key relievers (when the time comes). I will also display OOTP's preseason predictions.

Now on to 1876!

I had forgotten that the legendary/infamous Whiskey Allen (the greatest catcher in TWB history) was the first of the 'Allen' clan I added and the first ancestor ever.

Not sure what happened, but my original post on this thread disappeared, so I'm reposting...

deleted because the original post finally came back on 5/25... only took 2 1/2 months!

Here are the preseason predictions:
Code:
Chicago Cubs 122 40 .753 --
Pittsburgh Pirates 87 75 .537 35
St. Louis Cardinals 86 76 .531 36
Atlanta Braves 82 80 .506 40
Los Angeles Dodgers 78 84 .481 44
San Francisco Giants 66 96 .407 56
Philadelphia Phillies 65 97 .401 57
Cincinnati Reds 63 99 .389 59
While I do agree that the Cubs are the favorite to win the pennant in our inaugural season, I do not expect it to be by a 35-game margin! They clearly have the premier lineup in the league, but their pitching is poor outside of ace Al Spalding.

In my opinion, the Dodgers, Braves, Phillies and Cardinals will all be battling for second place. The Pirates are overrated with no clear strength on their team. Jim Devlin cannot carry the weight alone from the mound. The Reds, meanwhile, will be fighting to avoid 100 losses.

Now let's highlight some of the key players to watch.

Cap Anson, 1B, Cubs

Click for Real Career Stats

"Pop" is an all-around great player. He hits for average and for power. He has good plate discipline and is a stellar defensive first sacker. He is my pick for the top offensive player in the league, and he is a big key to the Cubs season.

Ross Barnes, 2B, Cubs

Click for Real
Career Stats

Ross is the best pure hitter in the league, and probably one of the best we will see for a long time. He makes consistent contact and is not fooled easily at the plate. He will likely lead the league in AVG and OBP. Oh yeah, and he's a gold glove caliber fielder as well.

Jim O'Rourke, LF, Braves

Career Stats

Jim is one player who can go toe-to-toe with Anson for top offensive player honors. He should also consistently hit over .300 with 30+ HR every year. He also has a good eye at the plate and is sharp on defense. He is a key player in Atlanta's offense and will be much-needed if that team expects to compete for the pennant.

Since many of the early teams had only 1 or 2 pitchers, the current crop of pitchers is quite thin. However, there are still some exciting aces to watch. Here are the top:

Tommy Bond, Dodgers

Click for Real
Career Stats

What would the Dodgers be without an ace, right? I mean Koafax, Valenzuela, Hershiser, Kershaw? Well, it all begins with Tommy Bond. Expect some dominant seasons from this tough Irishman.

Candy Cummings, Dodgers

Click for Real
Career Stats

Right behind Bond is Candy Cummings, the inventor of the curveball. That nasty pitch will catch plenty of batters off guard in the MLBR. The question is, how many strikeouts will it get him?

Al Spalding, Cubs

Click for Real
Career Stats

With the incredible Cubs offense behind him, expect Spalding to lead the league in wins. The question is, will he surpass 30? He is one of the league's top pitchers, and he has great control. What he might lack in overpowering stuff, he more than makes up for with pinpoint control and an ability to keep the ball in the park.

Mid-Season Report

The biggest surprise at the halfway point of the season is not that the Cubs' winning percentage is "only" .630, but that the Cardinals are in first place with a .662 winning percentage. The Redbirds sport the best team ERA in the league and have allowed the fewest runs. Their defense ranks 3rd best, which helps make up for a mid-level offense. The team only has a .245 batting average and have scored only the 5th most runs, but they are 3rd in OBP, 3rd in home runs and they have the most stolen bases.

3B Joe Battin leads St. Louis with a .301 average. Lip Pike has 13 home runs and a team-best 58 RBI. On the mound, George Bradley and Sam Weaver each have 10 wins and a sub-3.00 ERA.

Meanwhile, the Cubs have the #1 offense in just about every category, but their pitching staff has the 3rd worst team ERA at 4.07. Fortunately for them, their #1 ranked defense has allowed their pitchers to give up only the 2nd fewest runs in the league. Ace Al Spalding is 9-1 with a 2.93 ERA, but the rest of the staff is less than impressive.

On the offensive side, Cubs 2B Ross Barnes leads the league with a .370 batting average and a .455 OBP, while Cubs 1B Cap Anson is fourth with a .332 average and leads the league with his 21 HR, 77 RBI, 73 Runs and 1.058 OPS.

Elsewhere, the Giants' Terry Larkin leads the league with a 2.48 ERA while his rotation mate Fred Goldsmith is tops with 147 K's. Unfortunately, they are two of the only bright spots on a struggling Giants team.

The first MLHR season was an exciting one, at least as far as the 2-team race for the pennant is concerned. St. Louis maintained their lead over Chicago throughout the summer, and on September 1st held just a one-game lead.

The two teams started the month with their final head-to-head meeting, played in Chicago. The Cubs lost the first game 4-3, but they won the final two to tie the Cardinals for the lead. Following that series, the Cardinals lost their next 5 games while the Cubs went 4-2 over that same span to take a 3.5-game lead.

For the next 2 weeks, the lead remained virtually the same. Going into the final week of the season, the Cardinals' pennant hopes were looking dim. That is when things got interesting.

The Cubs opened the final week with a 3-game series at home against the last place Reds. Clinching looked like a sure thing, but instead the Reds shocked the baseball world with a 3-game sweep of the mighty Cubs. At the same time, the Cardinals swept their 3-game series at home against the Phillies. That cut Chicago's lead to just a half game.

With the Cubs taking a day off, St. Louis opened their final series - a 4-game set at home against those same spoiling Reds. They won game 1 by a score of 2-0 thanks to a complete game shutout by Joe Blong (16-9, 2.62 ERA), tying them with Chicago for the lead with only 3 days left.

On the following day, St. Louis again beat the Reds 5-2, while the Cubs won their series opener 5-1 against the Phillies in Chicago. The next day, Cincinnati upset the Cardinals 4-3 and the Cubs lost to Philadelphia 3-2 in the 13th inning thanks to a lead-off triple from SS John Richmond (.222, 297 AB) and a sac fly from CF Dave Eggler (.220, 459 AB).

So on October 1st, the final day of the season, Chicago and St. Louis were still tied atop the standings. The Cardinals found themselves down 5-0 after 5 1/2 innings. They scored two runs in the 6th and two more in the 7th, but were unable to add more, losing their final game to the pesky Reds 5-4.

Meanwhile, the Cubs trailed the Phillies 3-1 going into the bottom of the 8th when Chicago 3B Deacon White (.290, 18 HR, 95 RBI) came through with a 2-out, 2-run double to tie the game, driving Phillies pitcher Flip Lafferty (9-14, 5.00 ERA) from the game. John Richmond, one of the previous day's heroes, got a 1-out single, driving home fellow hero Dave Eggler to take a 1-run 9th inning lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, RF Bob Addy (.250, .362 OBP) drew his 109th walk of the season. On the very next pitch, catcher Cal McVey (.312, 24 HR, 87 RBI) hit a 397-foot pennant-winning homerun over the left-center fence and onto Waveland Avenue, sending the Wrigley Field fans to swarm the field in celebration.

Good luck with this concept.

I had done one in the past, many moons ago, starting at the beginning of the "Modern Age" (1901+), when the AL became a major league. I was doing a "what if" one in which it used modern day free agency and all of the incoming players were drafted instead of starting with their original team. I had also tried to do one with the players coming in with their original team and all transactions took place.

1877 Rookies

Unfortunately, there are not many new players joining the league this season. Here are the most interesting:

Mike Dorgan, RF, Cardinals

Click for Real Career Stats

CON: 6
GAP: 7
POW: 6
EYE: 8
DEF: 7
SPD: 6

Mike will be dropped into the 5th spot in the already-talented Cardinals lineup. He is an all-around talent, expected to hit .270+ with 20+ homers per year. He is also a solid defensive right fielder with good speed. He replaces Oscar Walker, who hit .266 with 16 HR and 78 RBI last season.

Jack Gleason, 3B, Cardinals

Click for Real Career Stats

CON: 5
GAP: 6
POW: 6
EYE: 8
DEF: 7
SPD: 5

Gleason is a solid ballplayer who would start on half the teams in the league, but he is behind defensive wizard Joe Battin (.289, 12 HR, 81 RBI) on the depth chart. While Gleason is no slouch defensively, he has more offensive potential than Battin, and he could eventually take over the job if Battin struggles.

Charlie Eden, LF, Cubs

Click for Real Career Stats

CON: 5
GAP: 8
POW: 8
EYE: 8
DEF: 3
SPD: 6

The rich get richer with this slugger. He projects as a .250 hitter with 90+ strikeouts, but when he connects, chances are it's going over the fence. He starts the season behind John Glenn (.224, 0 HR, 46 RBI, 122 BB, LF Range 10) who had a .369 OBP last season thanks to his keen ability to draw walks. Glenn also won a gold glove. However, Eden's power potential will be difficult fot the Cubs to keep out of the lineup for long.

Dave Rowe, CF, Cubs

Click for Real Career Stats

CON: 5
GAP: 7
POW: 6
EYE: 7
DEF: 5
SPD: 6

Rowe is a solid player who has the misfortune of playing behind Paul Hines (.258, 29 HR, 118 RBI) on an already-loaded team. He also plays SS and RF but both of those positions are spoken for as well.

Bobby Mitchell, SP, Reds

Click for Real Career Stats

STUFF: 9
MVMT: 7
CTRL: 3
STAM: 9
DEF: 5

The Reds needed some help after last season's 104-loss season. Mitchell will walk a lot of batters, but he sports a knockout 97+ MPH fastball and does well at limiting the damage from his walks due to a low opponent's AVG and few home runs. He will start the season as Cincy's #3 starter.

Will White, SP, Braves

Click for Real Career Stats

STUFF: 7
MVMT: 6
CTRL: 6
STAM: 9
DEF: 7

"Whoop-La," as he is called, has the potential to be a solid #3 or #4 starter for years to come. He is solid all-around with 4 good pitches. He doesn't have a true weakness, or a true specialty. He should help push the Braves nearer to the pennant chase.

1877 Preseason Predictions

Code:
Chicago Cubs 107 55 .660 --
St. Louis Cardinals 93 69 .574 14
Los Angeles Dodgers 85 77 .525 22
Pittsburgh Pirates 83 79 .512 24
Atlanta Braves 82 80 .506 25
Philadelphia Phillies 74 88 .457 33
Cincinnati Reds 64 98 .395 43
San Francisco Giants 63 99 .398 44
The Cubs are still the class of the league, but St. Louis will be out to prove that their 1876 season was no fluke. The Dodgers, meanwhile, aim to put themselves in the pennant discussion. While Los Angeles has perhaps the top rotation in the game, their offense is a lackluster one that doesn't hold a candle to Chicago's. And with the Cubs' addition of a 2nd ML-ready starting pitcher in Laurie Reis (7 Stuff, 6 Mvmt, 4 Ctrl), they should be even tougher to beat.

There are many who believe that Atlanta isn't given enough credit. They have one of the top pitching rotations and a solid offense. They question is whether or not they can turn that into successful season and perhaps challenge the Dodgers for 3rd place.

Mid-Season Report

The new season began with the Atlanta Braves holding a surprising lead on the division at the end of April. However, the favored Cubs came on strong in May and overtook Atlanta. They then extended their lead to 8.5 games by the time June ended.

That lead is no surprise when you consider that Chicago leads the National League in literally every major batting, pitching and defensive category. Their team is hitting .286, they have already hit 98 home runs and scored 445 runs. Their pitching staff has a superb 3.05 ERA and has allowed just 271 runs for an impressive 174 run differential.

The Cubs have four regulars hitting over .300 - Cap Anson (.381, 24 HR, 81 RBI), Ross Barnes (.336, 9 HR, 48 RBI), Paul Hines (.328, 19 HR, 70 RBI) and Deacon White (.303, 12 HR, 52 RBI). Meanwhile, ace Al Spalding is having a fine season from the mound, going 11-4 with a 2.68 ERA thus far.

In Atlanta, the pitching staff has underperformed with a 3.72 ERA (4th best in the league), but they hope to see an improvement, particularly with Tricky Nichols (3-5, 4.51 ERA) and Joe Borden (5-6, 3.72) not likely to repeat their awful numbers from June. Offensive leader Jim O'Rourke (.273, 13 HR, 37 RBI) is performing well below his output from last season when he finished 2nd in the Batter of the Year voting. If he gets on track, the team can keep from falling further behind the Chicago juggernaut.

The Cardinals are having a much different season than last year. After leading for most of the first 5 months last year, they find themselves struggling to stay afloat this year. Their .243 team batting average and 3.73 team ERA both rank 5th out of 8 teams, while their defense ranks 6th.

On the other side of things, the Phillies find themselves in the mix, just 1.5 games behind Atlanta. Philadelphia is performing this miracle despite a league-worst 4.10 ERA. Ace George Zettelein is the only bright spot with a 11-5 record and 2.95 ERA. The Phillies offense is another story. They seem to be leading the team with smoke and mirrors. They have the 2nd best team average (.261) but have scored the 3rd fewest runs with the 3rd fewest home runs. LF George Hall (.356, 13 HR, 51 RBI) and 2B Levi Meyerle (.294, 13 HR, 54 RBI) have led the charge. It is also worth noting that the team has the 2nd best defense in the league.

Well, to be honest, this year's pennant race was a bit of a snoozer. The Cubs wrapped things up by mid-September, clinching their second NL pennant in much easier fashion than their first. They swept most of the key leaderboards as well. Ross Barnes won the batting title and led the league in stolen bases. Cap Anson led the league in RBI and OPS, while Paul Hines topped the HR chart. Al Spalding led the NL in ERA, but surprisingly the Cubs had no 20-game winners.

St. Louis eked out a 90-win season with a 5-0 shutout of the Pirates on the final day of the season. Prior to that victory, the Cards had lost 6 of their previous 9 games to the Pirates, Dodgers and Cubs. Lip Pike (.294, 23 HR, 82 RBI) led the Redbird offense, sometimes on his own, although he did get a lot of help from rookie Mike Dorgan (.277, 19 HR, 71 RBI). Their pitching staff was led by Pud Galvin (19-11, 2.70 ERA) and Sam Weaver (17-10, 3.09), but opening day starter George Bradley (12-17, 3.69) had a disappointing season.

The Braves were upset to only improve on last season's record by a measly 2 wins, especially considering their offense was ranked #2 at September's end. Seven of their eight regulars hit 10 or more home runs with Jim O'Rourke (.276, 26 HR, 76 RBI), Jack Manning (.266, 25 HR, 93 RBI) and Harry Wright (.229, 21 HR, 72 RBI) each hitting over 20. Their rotation also had the 2nd best starters' ERA at 3.54, but their bullpen had the worst ERA in the league. All five starters - Tricky Nichols (12-10, 3.56 ERA), Dick McBride (16-15, 3.51 ERA), rookie Will White (18-11, 3.07 ERA), Joe Borden (10-13, 3.72 ERA) and Foghorn Bradley (19-9, 3.91 ERA) - had double-digit wins.

Pittsburgh's Jim Devlin (20-8, 2.82 ERA) had a superb season, but it wasn't enough as the rest of the Pirates rotation struggled. The Phillies tandem of George Hall (.341, 18 HR, 86 RBI), Levi Meyerle (.307, 19 HR, 102 RBI) and Ezra Sutton (.291, 17 HR, 76 RBI) and starter George Zettlein (20-11, 2.93 ERA) formed a formidable core, but they weren't enough to overcome Philadelphia's deep pitching woes.

The Dodgers' duo of Tommy Bond (16-13, 3.07 ERA) and Candy Cummings (13-10, 3.44 ERA) were the lone bright spots on a staff that ranked 7th in ERA. Offensively, Dodgers fans were thrilled by Tom York (.298, 24 HR, 122 RBI) and Dick Higham (.312, 16 HR, 95 RBI) on a routine basis.

Cincinnati's Charley Jones (.275, 36 HR, 87 RBI) and Dale Williams (13-12, 2.96) were overlooked due to a team that struggled in every category but defense. And as for San Francisco, Fred Goldsmith (13-15, 2.92 ERA) led a rotation that sported two other pitchers with sub-4.00 ERA's and two with ERA's over 5.00. As for the Giants' offense, it was pretty ugly despite several good seasons from its core - Joe Start (.303, 18 HR, 74 RBI), Jimmy Hallinan (.311, 14 HR, 83 RBI) and Fred Treacey (.272, 17 HR, 72 RBI).
