The Quest for #28 - 2014 New York Yankees

With a new season and a new version of OOTP out I'm going to create a new dynasty to follow along with the 2014 Yankees on their quest for their 28th World Series title. While there is some catchup to do my intent is to move along at the same pace as the Yankees, playing one day at a time.

I intend to play all the games out, and act as both the Yankees manager and general manager, or George Steinbrenner mode. We'll see if the Yankees have what it takes to win it all, or even make the playoffs after a disappointing and injury plagued 2013.

Originally I wasn't going to post this, but just wanted to take OOTP15 for a test drive, but after a successful game 1 what could it hurt, since we're on pace to go 162-0. Very small sample size aside, at a minimum this should be a more fun team than last year with the additions of Tanaka, Ellsbury, McCann, and Beltran plus the long awaited return of Michael Pineda.

Up first, game 1 against the Astros….

April 1, 2014 - Yankees at Astros

The Yankee season begins today in Houston, taking on an Astros team that went 51-111 last year taking on Astros 'ace' Scott Feldman, who went 7-6 with a 3.46 ERA last season. Taking the mound for the Yankees is our ace, CC Sabathia, trying to recover from a poor 2013 in which he went 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA. Only time will tell if time is beginning to catch up with Sabathia, or if last season was a blip and he'll return to form in 2014.

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury
SS - Derek Jeter
RF - Carlos Beltran
DH - Alfonso Soriano
C - Brian McCann
1B - Mark Teixera
3B - Kelly Johnson
LF - Brett Gardner
2B - Brian Roberts

Since this is our first game I'll share a couple thoughts on our lineup. While I feel pretty good about our outfield, despite some injury concerns, the infield really worries me. Jeter is returning from essentially a lost 2013 season, as is Mark Teixera. Neither Kelly Johnson or Brian Roberts strike me as starters on a championship team, and I'm really worried about Roberts.

On the bench we've got Yangervis Solarte and Dean Anna who are capable of playing in the infield, with Scott Sizemore stashed down in AAA ready for a callup.

Behind the plate McCann is the starter, with Francisco Cervelli backing him up. One position I feel pretty good about. The final spot on the bench belongs to past his prime Ichiro Suzuki, who at least has speed and defense on his side.

The bullpen has a couple question marks with closer David Robertson the heir to the recently retired Mariano Rivera, who is virtually impossible to replace. Righty Shawn Kelley and lefty Matt Thornton will be called on for late innings relief, with a quartet of former starters rounding out the bullpen, with David Phelps, Adam Warren, Vidal Nuno, and Dellin Betances.

-----------------------

The Yankees got the scoring started early, with Derek Jeter drawing a first inning walk, Carlos Beltran singling, and Brian McCann doubling home them both for a 2-0 lead.

The big guy took the mound in the bottom of the first and promptly gave up back to back singles. While I took it as a bad omen, CC did induce a pop-up, and then retired the side with a strike 'em out throw 'em out double play to end the inning.

When the Yankees stepped to the plate in the top of the second I started to feel pretty good, with Brett Gardner hitting a double and Brian Roberts connecting on a two run inside the park home run.

The one player who I had the least amount of confidence wouldn't be done at the plate though, he'd hit a second home run in the bottom of the seventh - a grand slam!

CC settled down and went 8 strong innings while striking out 9 batters. Dellin Betances took the mound with a small 11-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth making his 2014 debut and shook off a one out walk to retire the side without giving up a run.

Final Score :
Yankees 11
Astros 3

Season Record: 1-0

Heroes

Nobody came up bigger than Brian Roberts with a pair of home runs and 6 RBI in his Yankee debut. Brian McCann made his Yankee debut with a double, homer, and 4 RBI, and Beltran debuted with a pair of hits. The new guys came through today.

Brett Gardner was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a walk, RBI, and pair of runs scored. Not too shabby.

CC deserves some credit for his performance tonight with 8 strong innings, only wishing he could take back the 3 run fifth inning.

Goats

It's hard to find fault with an 11-3 win, but Jeter with a hitless 0-3 night and Ellsbury with a 1-6 night would be the top candidates.

You beat me to it. Doing the same dynasty. Big Yankees fan. The score of your first game was eerily similar to mine. The Yanks prevailed 11-4 in my first game. CC went six, allowed three runs, and the bullpen did the rest. Derek got dinged, and sat the next two games, I have finished the first six games, and we are 6-0 and number one in the power rankings. I am trying to play catch up.

Have fun with your dynasty. I'll be checking it out. As always, Go Yanks!!!!

A 6-0 start is pretty nice, I'd take that! That's encouraging, as is their play in real life (excluding last night's bullpen implosion.) I'd definitely love to hear how your progress is going too. I'm hoping to catch up today, although that may be too optimistic.

April 2, 2014 - Yankees at Astros

Starting lineup
LF - Brett Gardner
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury
RF - Carlos Beltran
DH - Alfonso Soriano
C - Brian McCann
1B - Mark Teixera
SS - Derek Jeter
3B - Kelly Johnson
2B - Brian Roberts

SP - Hiroki Kuroda

With Hiroki Kuroda on the mound today I felt pretty good heading into today's game against the Astros. With CC's struggles last year Kuroda felt like an ace most of the year, minus an end of year fade.

Today Kuroda was far from ace like, and didn't have his best stuff as he labored through 4 innings, allowed 5 runs, 8 hits, and 3 home runs. There wasn't an inning where he didn't get in trouble, although he did leave the game trailing 5-0 our offense could have helped him out a little bit.

Jarred Cosart was wild today, and the first four innings we had runners all over the bases with Cosart walking 5, hitting 3 batters, and allowing 4 hits, but our bats failed to capitalize on plenty of opportunities.

Vidal Nuno saw his first action of the year out of the 'pen, and allowed 3 runs in 3 innings. Overall it was just not our night, and about the only plus was we made it through the game without any injuries.

Heroes

On a night like tonight this category is a stretch, a big stretch. David Phelps pitched a scoreless eighth, so that would have been a bigger plus if we weren't down by 7.

Brian Roberts came to the plate with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and walked home a run. For a minute I pictured a second straight day with a grand slam, but at least he didn't strike out with the bases loaded like others.

Goats

After a flawless game 1, Brett Gardner couldn't do anything tonight. His highlight was getting hit by a pitch. His lowlight was ending not one but two innings with the bases loaded when even a single could have gotten us back in the game.

Hideki Kuroda didn't have his "A" game tonight, or even his "B" or "C" game. I lifted him after 71 pitches in an effort to keep him fresh toward the end of the year, and I'm just chalking this one up to a bad day at the ballpark.

--------------
Up next the finale in Houston where Ivan Nova will try and pitch us to the series win. While I don't intend to post much about the league, I'll note some things when they effect our division, or are of interest -

• The Sox have traded Jonny Gomes to the Cubs in exchange for CF Justin Ruggiano
• Xander Bogaerts suffered a minor injury that will keep him out of the next couple games for Boston
• The Rays sent C-Jose Molina and cash to the Jays in exchange for reliever Steve Delabar.
• The Phillies lost LF Domonic Brown to a calf injury for 4-5 months
• The Mariners landed 1B Kendrys Morales on a 1 year $2.9 million dollar deal, and I bet he's kicking himself for not taking that qualifying offer now.

That leaves the big fish of free agency SS Stephen Drew. While the real life Yankees have been on record as not having interest, I'll go on record stating that I do have interest, and hope we can work out a deal.

April 3, 2014 - Yankees at Astros (Game 3)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury
LF - Brett Gardner
RF - Carlos Beltran
DH - Alfonso Soriano
C - Brian McCann
1B - Mark Teixera
2B - Brian Roberts
SS - Dean Anna
3B - Yangervis Solarte

SP - Ivan Nova

While the Yankees jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, Ivan Nova gave it all back, and more in the bottom of the first when he got off to a shaky start to his 2014 campaign by allowing 3 runs.

It would be one of those games for Nova, as he alternated between pitching great (2nd and 3rd innings), and terrible (1st and 4th). We'll need more consistent starting pitching if we hope to contend in the AL East, although it's still early in the season.

Adam Warren made his season debut today, and allowed a 3 run homer in the sixth before settling down. Despite giving up 10 runs the Yankees weren't out of it today.

In fact, if we could hit with the bases loaded we'd be talking about a series win instead of a series loss. Once again Brett Gardner couldn't come through with the bases loaded.

I am encouraged by the debuts of Dean Anna and Yangervis Solarte, who combined to go 5-7 in the game with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Unfortunately it was a disappointing end to our first series of the season, and I can't help but feel we should have taken two out of three from the Astros.

Heroes

Jacoby Ellsbury picked up 3 doubles in the game, drove in 2 and scored 2 runs and is hitting .357 after the first series. I'm enjoying him at the top of the lineup, and hope we'll be able to take advantage of the speed of both Ellsbury and Gardner.

Dean Anna had an impressive debut at the plate, going 3-3 with a walk, including a big RBI double. He did make an error at shortstop, but could be a valuable member of the team.

Solarte was impressive as well with a 2-4 debut.

Goats

Again we get a poor performance from a starting pitcher, as Ivan Nova as roughed up with 7 runs in 5 innings, walking 3 and striking out 3. It could have been worse, but it wasn't good.

Alfonso Soriano continues to be an easy out in the cleanup spot, with an 0-4 night to drop to .083 on the season.

Brian Roberts delivered the other 0-for night tonight, going 0-4.

--------------

The Yankees will hit the road and travel to Toronto next where Masahiro Tanaka will make his highly anticipated debut.

April 4, 2014 - Yankees at Blue Jays (Game 4)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury
SS - Derek Jeter
RF - Carlos Beltran
DH - Alfonso Soriano
C - Brian McCann
1B - Mark Teixera
3B - Kelly Johnson
LF - Brett Gardner
2B - Dean Anna

SP - Masahiro Tanaka

Jose Reyes led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, and my immediate thought was here we go again, on the way to another pitching implosion. But Tanaka managed to stop the bleeding tonight, and through 8 innings of 3 hit ball, striking out 5 and walking one Blue Jay.

He really made just one mistake tonight after losing a 9 pitch battle to walk Jose Molina he gave up a run scoring double to Melky Cabrera. But besides that Tanaka was all we could have hoped for tonight, and left after 8 innings with the lead, which meant it was time for David Robertson to get his first save opportunity of 2014.

Mo's heir started the ninth inning giving up a single, then proceeded to walk the next batter, but then did his best Houdini impression to get out of the inning without allowing a run. The ninth was a little bit more uncomfortable than it had to be, but a win is a win, and a save is a save, and the Yankees are back at .500 on the season.

I'd also like to welcome back Alfonso Soriano's bat to the team. Soriano picked up his first home run of the season, a two run shot, and added a single.

I do have to tip my cap to Blue Jay's starter Drew Hutchinson, who struck out 11 in 7 1/3 innings. He pitched very well today, and we only hit the ball hard twice against him all night, the Soriano homer, and a Jeter double.

Heroes

Masahiro Tanaka - 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K, and the win

Alfonso Soriano broke out of his slump with a 2-4 night and a 2 run homer. Carlos Beltran went 2-3 on the night with a walk and RBI. We could add in Jeter's double and that was our only hits of the night.

D-Rob got the job done in the ninth to pick up his first save of the year.

Goats

I still haven't figured out if Drew Hutchison was really good tonight, or our offense was really bad. While they could have plenty of company Kelly Johnson striking out 3 times and Brian McCann striking out twice and leaving 3 men on base stand out over the other 0-4 batters.
--------------

In a bit of a shocking trade the Red Sox sent LF Daniel Nava and minor league starting pitcher Trey Ball west to the Angels in return for Josh Hamilton. While Hamilton is off to a quick start with 4 hits in his first 10 at-bats, last year Hamilton was paid $17 million for a 1.5 WAR season, while Nava had a 2.8 WAR season while making $556,000. Hamilton's remaining salaries are $15m, 23m, 30m, and 30m. That's definitely not a trade I'd make, and I don't think the Sox would either.

April 5, 2014 - Yankees at Blue Jays (Game 5)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury
SS - Derek Jeter
RF - Carlos Beltran
DH - Alfonso Soriano
1B - Mark Teixera
3B - Yangervis Solarte
LF - Brett Gardner
C - Francisco Cervelli
2B - Dean Anna

SP - Michael Pineda

Michael Pineda made his long awaited Yankee debut today, and for four innings Pineda was lights out. Unfortunately for Pineda our bats were silent to start the game, and a shaky fifth inning led to a 3-0 Blue Jays lead, with the big damage coming on a 2 run homer by Melky Cabrera.

Pineda got in trouble again in the seventh, and was relieved by Matt Thornton, who really just has one job to do - get lefties out. Thornton couldn't do his job today and allowed an RBI single to the only batter he faced and giving Pineda a final line of 6 2/3 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. He showed flashes of being good, and was inconsistent at times.

Shawn Kelley made his first appearance out of the bullpen this year and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, but did give up a hit with the run charged to Thornton.

He kept us in the game, but unfortunately our bats were silent until the ninth, but we were already down 5-0 at that point. Things did get interesting though with doubles by Ellsbury, Soriano, and Beltran. We closed the gap to 5-4 and with Brett Gardner on second base after a walk and a balk Brian McCann came into the game to pinch hit for Cervelli. McCann hit a groundball in the hole, but was thrown out by Reyes. The Yankees lose 5-4 in a game I thought we could come back and steal.

Heroes

Jacoby Elllsbury had 2 hits in the game and made a couple good defensive plays in the field.

Beltran only had one hit, but he ended a rally with a strong throw to get the runner tagging from third base to keep us within reach.

Goats

Yes, Matt Thornton only faced one batter, but if he did his job we'd at least have a shot in extra innings. Not a great 2014 debut.

Francisco Cervelli was 0-3 on the night, left 3 batters on base, and had a passed ball tonight.
--------------

Still no news from Stephen Drew, other than he favors our offer. With the minor league season underway Scranton is the only team in the organization with a winning record, going 2-1. Trenton (0-3), Tampa (1-2), and Charleston (1-2) have made it a bad start to 2014.

April 6, 2014 - Yankees at Blue Jays (Game 6)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury - .318, 0 HR, 2 RBI
SS - Derek Jeter - .154, 0, 0
RF - Carlos Beltran - .333, 0, 4
DH - Alfonso Soriano - .200, 1, 5
C - Brian McCann - .158, 1, 4
1B - Mark Teixera - .250, 0, 1
2B - Brian Roberts - .200, 2, 7
LF - Ichiro Suzuki - .000, 0, 0
3B - Yangervis Solarte - .375, 0, 0

SP - CC Sabathia - (1-0, 1.13)

With CC making his second start of the year it didn't take long to give him a lead to work with, as Jacoby Ellsbury hit the first pitch of the game out of the park to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Carlos Beltran singled and both Alfonso Soriano and Brian McCann hit back to back doubles to give CC a 3-0 cushion.

He'd only need the first run though, as Sabathia was dominating tonight, going 7 innings and allowing just 3 hits, never really giving the Blue Jays much to work with. With a 7-0 lead entering the eighth inning there was no reason to push things, and David Phelps came in to pitch the final two frames to preserve the shutout.

It seemed like everyone played well tonight except Solarte, who was the only hitless batter on the night. Beltran and Soriano each had 3 hits, and the Yankees had 17 total hits. This was definitely a good day for the Yankees.

Heroes

It's hard to top CC's performance because he was dominant today. A good year by CC will go a long way.

Our offense was slumping coming into the game, but Jeter (2-5), Beltran (3-5), Soriano (3-5), McCann (2-5), Teixeira (2-5), Roberts (2-4), and Suzuki (2-3) all had big games.

Goats

Yangveris Solarte was 0-4 on the night, and left 4 men on base.

--------------

The Yankees head home for our home opener against the Orioles tomorrow. Hiroki Kuroda will try and put his last start behind him.

Former Yankee Raul Ibanez picked up his 2000th career hit today.

Looking good so far, NYY!

As in - the Yankees are struggling to play .500.

How's OOTP15 treating you so far?

Love the series. You are progressing nicely. In my league, we dropped two of three at home to the O's and are now 7-2 -0.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Boston is right there too. They have won six straight after a slow start and are tied with us at 7-2.

Good luck. I will share some stats with you if you'd like. Hope you do better against the O's then I did.

As always, GO YANKS!

And the Red Sox are in first place... It's early though, so I'm hopeful things will turn around and we'll at least start pitching better.

OOTP15 has been very good so far. There's a little bit of a learning curve with the new UI and trying to find where some things are, but I'm getting used to it, plus there are some neat new features like the Manager's Office which I'm really enjoying. Seems like a solid release and I'm anxious to convert all of my leagues over.

The O's came in to the series with a 1-5 record, so of course they're going to play us tough. I wish we were pitching a little better, but it's a long season.

Thanks - I'd love for you to share some stats.

April 7, 2014 - Yankees vs. Orioles (Game 7)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury - .296, 1, 3
SS - Dean Anna - .333, 0, 1
DH - Carlos Beltran - .391, 0, 4
C - Brian McCann - .208, 1, 6
1B - Mark Teixera - .286, 0, 2
2B - Brian Roberts - .286, 2, 8
RF - Ichiro Suzuki - .667, 0, 1
LF - Brett Gardner - .294, 0, 1
3B - Yangervis Solarte - .250, 0, 0

SP - Hiroki Kuroda - (0-1, 11.25)

Another day and another disaster for Kuroda, who lasted just 5 innings, allowed 6 runs on 8 hits and walked a batter with 6 strikeouts. While this was better than his last start, it still was bad enough for him to take the loss, despite some late inning heroics by the Yankees.

Kuroda wasn't the only Yankee pitcher with a bad night though, as Adam Warren allowed 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning.

But our offense made things interesting in today's 10-9 loss though, with Yangervis Solarte hitting a 3 run home run, and a grand slam. With Ichiro hitting a solo shot the Yankees scored 8 of our 9 runs off the long ball, and from the most unlikely sources.

We couldn't come all the way back though, and the game ended on a long fly ball off the bat of Brian Roberts which I thought would be a walk off home run, but was just the final out when Adam Jones robbed him of a home run. The same Adam Jones who went deep twice for the Orioles, and drove in four runs.

This was a disappointing home opener, and we'll try and right the ship with Ivan Nova on the mound tomorrow.

Heroes

Tonight was really the Solarte and Ichiro show, with a little sprinkle of Dean Anna thrown in for good measure. The three combined to go 7 for 11 with 3 home runs, 8 RBI, and 6 runs scored.

Goats

Our pitching needs to do a better job if we are going to compete, with Kuroda (5 IP, 6 ER) and Warren (2/3 IP, 3 ER) it's hard to win, even when you are scoring 9 runs.

Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner combined to go 0-9 tonight, with Gardner leaving 6 on base.

April 8, 2014 - Yankees vs. Orioles (Game 8)

Starting lineup
LF - Ichiro Suzuki (.833, 1, 2)
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury (.250, 1, 3)
2B - Dean Anna (.385, 0, 1)
RF - Carlos Beltran (.357, 0, 4)
3B - Yangervis Solarte (.313, 2, 7)
DH - Alfonso Soriano (.280, 1, 6)
1B - Mark Teixera -(.280, 0, 2)
SS - Derek Jeter (.222, 0, 0)
C - Francisco Cervelli (.000, 0, 0)

SP - Ivan Nova (0-1, 10.80)

Nova came out strong and pitched a 1-2-3 first inning, but things would go downhill from there. Nova allowed 3 runs in the second inning, 2 in the fifth, and was chased from the game in the sixth inning. His final line for the night was 5 2/3 innings, 10 hits, 6 runs allowed, 4 earned, with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. A little better than his first start, but not too great either.

Unfortunately our offense could only score 2 runs on 6 hits. Derek Jeter hit a solo home run, and walked with the bases loaded.

More bad news came in the way of injury as Carlos Beltran left the game in the second inning. He's day to day with a hamstring strain, so we'll have a decision on whether to place him on the DL with him being out 6 days. I'm concerned playing one man short with Beltran out.

Heroes

Tonight was a pretty poor night all the way around, but Derek Jeter went 1-2 with 2 RBI including a home run as our standout performer.

Goats

We can begin forming a line here - Ivan Nova, David Phelps (2.1 IP, 4 ER), Jacoby Ellsbury (0-4), and Brett Gardner (0-3).

April 9, 2014 - Yankees vs. Orioles (Game 9)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury (.222, 1, 3)
SS - Derek Jeter (.250, 1, 2)
RF - Ichiro Suzuki (.600, 1, 2)
DH - Alfonso Soriano (.286, 1, 6)
C - Brian McCann (.207, 1, 6)
1B - Mark Teixera (.250, 0, 2)
3B - Kelly Johnson (.167, 0, 0)
2B - Brian Roberts (.263, 2, 8)
LF - Brett Gardner (.208, 0, 1)

SP - Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 1.13)

I should have mentioned that the Orioles entered the series with a 1-5 record, and as you know they've really beat us up this series. I was hoping for better results with Tanaka on the mound.

The game started off with a leadoff single by Steve Lombardozzi followed by a single by Nick Markakis. While Tanaka got Chris Davis to ground into a double play, a Chris Davis double put the Orioles up 1-0, and here we go again.

Jacoby Ellsbury reached on an error to start the bottom of the first, but the Yankees went down without a fight when Ichiro grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Thankfully Tanaka settled down after that, and would go on to pitch a good game. He'd go on to pitch 7 innings, strike out 6, walk none, and allow just 5 hits.

The Yankees got doubled from McCann, Teixeira, and Roberts in the bottom of the second to put us on the board and give us a 2-1 lead.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the 7th when Kelly Johnson led off with a solo home run to put us up 3-1. Brian Roberts followed that with a single, and a Brett Gardner walk put runners on first and second and chased O's starter Chris Tillman from the game. Jacoby Ellsbury greeted Zach Britton with a three run home run and with a 7-1 lead the game was a formality from that point.

Shawn Kelley and Vidal Nuno each pitched scoreless innings and we'd finish the series with just 1 win in 3 games.

Heroes

Once again Tanaka pitched well to get the win, and the bullpen (Shawn Kelley and Nuno) got the job done.

Brian Roberts picked up 2 hits, and Kelly Johnson and Jacoby Ellsbury each had big homers. I'm not sure both are out of their slumps, but it's a start.

Goats

Jeter and Soriano both went 0-4, but it was a good win.

--------------

We're taking on the first place Red Sox (7-2) for a four game set. I'd like to see better pitching from our starters besides Tanaka and CC. I'd also like to get David Robertson into more games, and stop saving him for save opportunities that aren't coming.

The other big news is the Yankees coming to terms with shortstop Stephen Drew on a two year $2,820,000 contract. The price is low, the risk is small and Drew provides us with some insurance in case of an injury to Derek Jeter, and a replacement for Jeter next year.

I've already stated that I intend to get caught up with the 2014 Yankees and keep pace until the end of the season. Beyond that I don't know what the plan is now. In a perfect world the Yankees will win championship number 28 this year, but I'm keeping 2015 in the back of my mind just in case I have to cross that bridge.

But for now my goal is to catch up with the last 10 games so I'm even with the real life Yankees. And with the addition of Drew I'm going to place Carlos Beltran on the disabled list and give him an opportunity to fully heal.

That a bummer about Beltran. I think the addition of Drew was a smart move going forward.

My Yanks are 10-5. We lost three of four to the first place Sox (12-3), Man, one of us has to beat those guys. We did come back and sweep the lowly Cubs, so we are respectable. Here are some stats from my league. By the way, we sent Anna to AAA, and brought up Nunez. He has responded by hitting over .300. We are thinking about bringing up catcher John Ryan Murphy and sending Francisco Cervelli down. He has been struggling at the plate, but did well against the Cubs, so he has saved his backup spot for now.

M. Texeira .368 7 HRs 14 RBI. His seven HRs leads both leagues. 14 RBI is tied for 5th in the AL
B. Roberts .291 5 HRs 14 RBI
B. Gardner .310 2 SBs
K. Johnson .300 3 HRs
C. Beltran .281 3 10
B. McCann .276 3 10
J. Ellsbury .297 3 12

Derek Jeter is off to a horrible start. He is hitting .167 with 0 RBI and only 3 Runs scored in 48 ABs.
He is my favorite Yankee, and this is his final year, so we are going to give him every chance to battle his way out of it.

Pitching Leaders

H. Kuroda 1 - 2 2.55
I. Nova 3 - 0 2.84
C. C. Sabathia 2 - 1 5.40
M. Pineda 1 - 0 3.44
M. Tanaka 1 - 0 5.29

David Robertson has been lights out. He has 5 Svs in 5 opportunities and 7 Ks in 5 IP.

Love the organization of your dynasty. Like you, I want to catch up, then play a game at a time. Good
luck against the Red Sox. They sure were tough. We won the first one, then they mauled us.

As always, GO YANKS!

Thanks on Drew, I think the price was too cheap to pass up on, even if it creates a logjam. I'm hoping for a big series against the Sox. Anna has been playing well for me in a small sample size. I haven't given much thought to Nunez yet. He's struggling in AAA, but he could have some value.

I'm with you on Cervelli. I keep thinking he's got to do something soon, and he has only played in two games, but it seems like he makes the big outs at bat, or has a key passed ball. Murphy has been red hot (.367, 2 HR, 5 RBI). I just worry about getting him enough playing time, but McCann hasn't done much yet.

I think if we combined your version of Kuroda, Nova, and Pineda with my version of CC and Tanaka we'd be unstoppable. It's kind of funny how they are all performing opposite.

I hope Jeter battles out of it for you and me. He's my favorite Yankee too, so I'd love to see him go out in style.

April 10, 2014 - Yankees vs. Red Sox (Game 10)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury (.225, 2, 6)
LF - Brett Gardner (.192, 0, 1)
RF - Ichiro Suzuki (.500, 1, 2)
DH - Alfonso Soriano (.250, 1, 6)
C - Brian McCann (.212, 1, 6)
1B - Mark Teixera (.281, 0, 3)
2B - Brian Roberts (.318, 2, 9)
SS - Stephen Drew (.000, 0, 0)
3B - Yangervis Solarte (.300, 2, 7)

SP - Michael Pineda (0-1, 5.40)

If you told me before the game that Michael Pineda would pitch 6 innings, give up 6 hits, and strike out 7 I would have been pretty happy. Especially when we were taking on a starting pitcher (Felix Doubront) who was entering the game with a 19.29 ERA.

Unfortunately for Pineda four of those five hits were home runs. They were all solo shots, but Pineda left the game trailing 4-0 because Doubront shut us down for 6 1/3 innings...of course.

Vidal Nuno came on to pitch the final three innings, and held the Red Sox to just one run, but we just couldn't hit today, and managed to score just one run all game as we lost to the Red Sox.

Heroes

The former Red Sox on the team, Jacoby Ellsbury and Stephen Drew combined to go 4-8 with one RBI and one run scored. Ellsbury hit a triple, which was our only extra base hit.

Goats

Ichiro, Alfonso Soriano, Mark Teixeira, Brian Roberts, and Yangervis Solarte combined to go 0-17 with 7 strikeouts. It wasn't our best offensive showing.

April 11, 2014 - Yankees vs. Red Sox (Game 11)

Starting lineup
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury (.250, 2, 7)
SS - Stephen Drew (.500, 0, 0)
RF - Alfonso Soriano (.229, 1, 6)
C - Brian McCann (.216, 1, 6)
1B - Mark Teixera (.250, 0, 3)
DH - Derek Jeter (.208, 1, 2)
2B - Brian Roberts (.280, 2, 9)
LF - Brett Gardner (.200, 0, 1)
3B - Yangervis Solarte (.261, 2, 7)

SP - CC Sabathia (2-0, 0.60)

Game 2 of a four game set versus the Red Sox featured CC on the mound against Jon Lester. Lester entered the game with a 1-0 record and 5.02 ERA.

After two and a half innings it seemed like it was a going to be a low scoring game with a 0-0 tie. So with Brett Gardner up with one out I had him bunt for a base hit, and he moved to third on a single by Yangervis Solarte. Both runners came home to score on a single by Stephen Drew to give us a 2-0 lead.

But the Red Sox would chip away at the lead with a solo home run by David Ortiz in the fourth, and in the fifth they tied the game up on an RBI single by Dustin Pedroia.

A Mike Napoli solo home run in the 6th inning put the Red Sox up 3-2. Lester and four relievers shut us down the rest of the game though, and we lost our second straight game to the Red Sox 3-2.

Heroes

This is never a fun category when you lose, but Solarte was 2-3 at the plate, and Stephen Drew picked up a big 2 run single.

CC Sabathia didn't really pitch bad either - 7 2/3 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 9 K, and David Robertson pitched 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

Goats

Another 0-4 night for Alfonso Soriano to drop his average to .205 for the season, and an 0-4 night for Brian McCann to drop his average to .195.

----------

It's hard to believe that the Yankees are tied for 5th in runs scored. Of course our batting average and OBP is 11th in the league. Not to place blame on someone who has only played in 2 games this year, but Francisco Cervelli was sent down and JR Murphy was recalled. He'll get the start tomorrow as we spell McCann.
