Portland Beavers: 2018-?

As the 2014 season drew to a close, Bud Selig officially retired as commissioner of MLB. Selig had a long and controversial 23-year career as commissioner, presiding over the "Steroid Era," but also over unprecedented revenue growth for the sport, as well as the league's expansion from 26 to 30 teams, the addition of interleague play, and expanding the playoffs from four to ten teams. As his career came to an end, with his former Chief Operating Officer Rob Manfred taking the reins from him after the season, most onlookers anticipated that MLB would not change much in the upcoming years.

This made Manfred's press conference prior to the World Series all the more surprising. "MLB is doing fine financially," Manfred said. "But we recognize too that there are quite a few cities and markets out there that are clamoring for baseball to come to them. We want to find ways to bring baseball to them." This was an about-face from a statement that Selig had made just a year earlier, that there were no plans for expansion in the immediate future.

Shortly after the World Series, what Manfred hinted at became official. MLB would solicit bids from potential expansion franchises, to be decided at the time of the 2015 World Series.

2014 recap

-The Detroit Tigers posted the best record in baseball, at 98-64, and won the World Series in six games over the Washington Nationals. A Tiger won the Cy Young Award, but it wasn't Justin Verlander or Max Scherzer- but Drew Smyly, who went 20-5 with a 3.18 ERA. Miguel Cabrera had another great season, hitting .320 with 35 home runs and 114 RBI.
-Tampa Bay won the AL East at 96-66, with Los Angeles taking the West at 91-71.
-Texas made the one-game playoff after winning a thrilling 13-inning affair with the surprising Seattle Mariners in game 163.
-In the NL, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles tied for the best record at 96-66, with Washington winning 94 games.
-Mike Trout had a season for the ages, hitting .337 with 37 home runs, 114 RBI, and a .449 OBP, and 13.0 WAR. Yes, he finally won the MVP award.
-Michael Wacha won the NL Cy Young with a 22-5 record and 2.49 ERA, striking out 277. Freddie Freeman was the MVP, hitting .337 with 34 HR and 98 RBI.
-The rookies of the year were Rusney Castillo of San Francisco and Xander Bogaerts.
-Clayton Kershaw and Zach Greinke opened a steakhouse together.
-Buck Showalter got canned and Matt Wieters wrecked a car after the Orioles finished 61-101.

expansion candidates

Six potential expansion franchises submitted bids in the 2014-2015 offseason, with MLB planning to accept two bids to start play in the 2018 season.

1. Portland. I'll spare you the drama, this is one of the two that will win. Portland is a solid media market, with its only current major sports franchises the Trail Blazers and the Timbers. They have a long history in the Pacific Coast League, though after the AAA Beavers' stadium was converted to a soccer-only venue, their only local franchise is the single-A Hillsboro Hops.

2. Sacramento. A big market, and one that is growing quickly. It has only one major sports team, the Kings, but it could barely hold onto that one. And does MLB really want a fifth team in California?

3. Las Vegas. On paper, a very large market, but perhaps one that is unlikely to attend baseball games regularly. Would tourists flying into Sin City for the weekend want to take in a ball game? Would MLB want Las Vegas anyway?

4. Brooklyn. MLB supported three teams fifty years ago, and it's not like it couldn't support a third again. But you can imagine the Yankees and Mets would fight this tooth and nail.

5. Charlotte. A big market, and one that currently supports two teams. However, the city just shelled out for a lavish new minor-league park for the AAA Knights and may not be willing to go back to the well again.

6. Montreal. We all know what happened the last time around. But it remains a huge market, there are opportunities for media dollars that were not there a decade ago, and there's a decrepit stadium that could probably house a rejuvenated Expos franchise for a few years if necessary.

2015 announcements

As the 2015 World Series opened, commissioner Rob Manfred made several announcements. First, both leagues would officially adopt the designated hitter beginning in the 2017 season. Manfred felt that fan opinion had now swayed to favor the DH throughout MLB, especially given that offense remained so low over the past several seasons, and also thought it important to standardize the leagues.

Second, he announced that the leading candidates for the expansion franchises were Portland, Charlotte, and Montreal. "All three groups have put together very attractive packages. The questions will be which ones can push through a plan to make a franchise stable over the long term."

Portland's bid was led by Nike chairman Phil Knight, and includes a proposal for a stadium in the Rose Quarter, in the northeast part of the city. Despite quite a bit of negative publicity for the proposal, which included some public funding for the stadium (though not nearly as much as other recent stadium proposals had), the bid had widespread popular support.

Charlotte and Montreal''s bids were more complicated. Charlotte's principal owner was the CEO of Lowe's, but local opposition has been strong, as the AAA team just opened a new $54M stadium in 2014. Montreal's principal investor is Guy Laliberte, the chairman and CEO of Cirque du Soleil, and popular support is quite strong, but it's hard to forget how the Expos franchise crashed and burned a decade ago.

-Colby Rasmus signed for $126M with the White Sox, Justin Upton for $81M with the Red Sox, Doug Fister for $80M with the Phillies.
-Tampa Bay was projected to win 98 games, the best in baseball.
-Oakland announced that it had finally come to an agreement with the city to build a new ballpark, which is slated to open in 2019.
-And MLB announced that Portland's MLB bid had been accepted, with their new park (Nike Field) likely to open for the 2018 season. The decision between Charlotte and Montreal had not yet been made, but Montreal was believed to be in the lead.

2016 recap

-The Texas Rangers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games to capture their first World Series. At 86 wins, the Rangers actually had the fewest wins of any playoff team, but won the weak AL West outright. Los Angeles was the top team in the NL with 94 wins.
-Detroit, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Chicago were the other division winners. The Cubs' investment in prospects finally paid off, as Albert Almora, Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, and Jorge Soler all contributed to the big-league club.
-Mike Trout won his third straight MVP, hitting .308 with 28 home runs and 92 RBI, for 10.7 WAR, his fifth straight 10-WAR season. Trout is hitting .317 in his 5+ year career, with 170 home runs and 55.7 WAR.
-Bryce Harper won the NL MVP, hitting .317 with 32 HR and 112 RBI.
-Clayton Kershaw was terrific en route to collecting his second Cy Young Award, going 23-3 with a 1.71 ERA. Chris Sale won his second straight award, going 20-6 with a 2.71 ERA. Both pitchers won the pitching triple crown.
-Atlanta's Curt Casali and Houston's Domingo Santana won the Rookie of the Year awards.
-Detroit's Jhoulys Chacin, New York's Noah Syndergaard, and Tampa Bays' Matt Magill threw no-hitters.
-After his 60-HR season, Hunter Morris slumped to just 29 this year.
-Washington traded Stephen Strasburg, who would not re-sign with the club, to Cincinnati for three prospects, including #4 overall prospect Michael Matuella.
-Detroit outfielder Jamie Johnson was convicted of investment fraud and sentenced to five years in prison.
-And the second 2018 expansion franchise was officially announced: the Montreal Expos! Montreal is expected to play in Olympic Stadium for at least the first year, with their new stadium (Labatt Park) to open in 2019 or 2020.

2016-7 offseason

-Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Piazza, and Vladimir Guerrero were selected to the Hall of Fame.
-Jason Heyward, the biggest name in free agency, signed with Houston for four years, $97M.
-The Cubs were projected to be the top team in baseball, with 96 wins.
-Rangers SP Alec Asher was the consensus top prospect in baseball.
-Whatever happened to that Alex Rodriguez guy? He only managed 71 more at-bats with the Yankees, and has been toiling away as the best-paid reserve infielder in the International League with the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Railriders.
-One more season until the inaugural draft for the Portland Beavers! Sadly, MLB will not allow them to participate in this year's amateur draft, so they and the Expos will start from scratch at the end of the 2017 season.

Look forward to reading this.

Did Strasburg sign with the Reds or did he go to FA?

Inexplicably, he went to the Rays for $28M over two years.

Anyone should feel free to ask about players or anything else going on in the sim whenever you like.

Also, I didn't mention the MLB structure starting in 2018: there will be four divisions of four teams in each league. No more wild card but the playoffs will now be three seven-game series.

2017 recap

-The Chicago Cubs won the World Series in five games over Tampa Bay, after winning 93 games in the regular season. The Cubs had a powerful offense, led by Albert Almora, Jorge Soler, and Javier Baez. The Rays, meanwhile, won 91 games and took one of the AL wild cards.
-Boston led the AL with 97 wins, and Detroit and Houston took the other two AL divisions. Philadelphia and Los Angeles also won their divisions.
-Mike Trout won his fourth straight MVP, posting a .316 average, 28 HR, 95 RBI, and 10.7 WAR. Oscar Taveras won the NL award, hitting .333 with 24 HR and 98 RBI.
-Clayton Kershaw won the NL Cy Young and the pitching triple crown again, going 19-8 with a 2.43 ERA. Stephen Strasburg earned his contract, going 22-4 with a 2.35 ERA and 270 strikeouts.
-Houston catcher Simeon Lucas and Miami first baseman Sean Dwyer were the rookies of the year.
-Joe Girardi is in the midst of a Billy Martin-esque career. He was fired after 2015, then managed 53 games for the Royals in 2016 and came back to the Yankees, then was fired again last year again after going 67-89.
-Atlanta moved into their new home in Cobb County: Home Depot Stadium.
-Manny Machado made commercials for a car dealership.
-Miguel Cabrera hit 40 home runs, and at age 34, is at 518 in his career. He remains a premier slugger and has an outside chance at challenging the all-time record.
-Albert Pujols is at 595 in his career but is falling off the pace at age 37, with only 27 home runs last season.

Expansion draft!

The Beavers are open for business. The Beavers selected pitcher Matt Andriese with the #1 pick in the expansion draft. Andriese is a 28-year-old starter selected from the Tampa Bay organization, where he had a 4.14 ERA in parts of three seasons as a swingman. Seven of the first eight picks were pitchers. Here's the whole list:

1. P Matt Andriese
2. P Zach Lee
3. P C.J. Edwards
4. OF Tyler O'Neill
5. P Mario Hollands
6. P Rafael Montero
7. P Cory Mazzoni
8. P Juan Oramas
9. OF Travis Witherspoon
10. IF Taylor Featherstone
11. IF Adam Nelubowich
12. P Jimmy Nelson
13. OF Steve Moya
14. P Brandon Workman
15. P Vidal Nuno
16. C Will Swanner
17. 1B Chris McGuiness
18. C Tucker Barnhart
19. IF Daniel Mateo
20. P Kevin Chapman
21. IF Wilfredo Tovar
22. P Casey Crosby
23. P Corey Black
24. OF Trayce Thompson
25. P Ty Buttrey
26. 1B Keon Barnum
27. OF Kevin Brown
28. IF Matt D. Williams
29. OF D.J. Peterson
30. C Oscar Hernandez
31. P Keone Kela
32. OF Jefferson Olacio
33. IF Fernery Ozuna
34. P Jonny Venters
35. OF Michael Burgess

The Expos' first pick was first baseman Harold Riggins, which was a little surprising as he appears impressively terrible.

Next up: The Beavers hire a coaching staff and fill out their roster in the offseason.

2017-8 offseason

The Beavers hired their full coaching staff. The manager will be Terry Francona, who signed a two-year deal after being fired as Kansas City's manager last year. The hitting coach will be Lloyd McClendon, the pitching coach Larry Rothschild, and the bench coach Luis Aguayo. It's a seasoned bunch that will be working with a lot of raw players. The scouting director is Jed Hoyer.

-OF Andrew McCutcheon become the face of the franchise, signing a four-year deal worth $64M total. McCutcheon played only 10 games last season after breaking his elbow in April, but accumulated 12.4 WAR in the preceding three seasons. He is 31 and may be better suited to left field at this point in his career.
-We signed David Price for three years, $18M total. Price is coming off a bad year with the Blue Jays, going 12-14 with a 4.73 ERA, just 2.3 WAR. But he'll easily earn this contract.
-P Tyson Ross is still mulling a two-year deal for $10M. (My house rule is I can sign two free agents during the offseason, then one additional one during spring training.)
-P Casey Crosby was traded to Miami for third baseman Colin Moran. Moran hit .281 last year with 34 doubles and 11 HR, and looks to solidify the hot corner.
-C David Rodriguez was selected in the rule 5 draft. (Usually making a rule 5 selection is against my house rules, but this team needs some help!)
-We acquired C Russell Martin from Boston for IF David Nelubowich. Martin is in the last year of a four-year deal and will make $13.8M. We had the financial ability to do it. Martin is not likely to provide much on the field, but calls a great game and will provide some veteran leadership. (My house rule is I'm allowed to solicit deals for anyone on the trade block, and also shop up to three players in the offseason and up to three during the regular season. Trading is on hard, and neutral re prospects vs veterans.)

Otherwise, around the league:
-Chipper Jones, Jim Thome, and Tim Raines were selected to the Hall of Fame. Raines going in this year is especially sweet with the Expos returning to MLB.
-Carlos Gonzalez returned to Colorado for $106M over five years. Billy Butler returned to Tampa Bay for $59M over four.
-Yu Darvish broke the bank with the Rockies and will make $127M over five years.
-Kyle Seager will make $80M over four years with the Indians. Craig Kimbrel will make $56M over three years, very impressive for a closer.
-The Expos immediately made a big splash, signing 1B Eric Hosmer to a four-year deal worth $94M.
-David Wright and Travis d'Arnaud opened a nightclub named Club Velocity.
-The playoff structure was finalized: only the division winners would advance to the postseason, with each round of the playoffs a best of seven series.
-For the regular season, each team will play its division opponents 12-15 times, its intraleague opponents six times, and teams in the other league three times apiece.
-The top prospect is Rockies pitcher Andres Matos.
-The Red Sox are projected as the best team in baseball, with 95 wins. The Beavers are projected to win 70 games, and the Expos 62. Owner Phil Knight has no expectations for me this season.

I'll give more detail on the opening day roster in the next post. My goals of this dynasty are A) do better than the Expos and B) win a world championship. I'll keep posting until I win the Series, or until I get fired, whichever comes first.

A look at the divisions

Just to see the realignment. The definition of "South" is a little loose, but certainly no worse than some MLB's previous geographic laxity in divisional definitions.

Also, commissioner Rob Manfred did away with the rule that the All-Star game determined home-field advantage in the World Series- it will now be determined by the team with the best record.

opening day 2018

David Price matched up against King Felix Hernandez and the Beavers' soon-to-be rivals, the Seattle Mariners, in Seattle for opening day.

Opening day lineup:
CF Travis Witherspoon (speed and defense-first player drafted from Seattle)
3B Colin Moran (acquired from Miami, the team's second-best hitter)
LF Andrew McCutcheon (the star)
RF Steve Moya (has some pop, but poor plate discipline)
1B Keon Barnum (hit .287 with 30 HR at AAA last year, making his MLB debut)
DH Kevin Brown (good contact hitter, but subpar defender)
SS Taylor Featherston (limited defender and projects as a reserve)
C Russell Martin (aging vet with great defense)
2B Fernery Ozuna (young but with limited upside; has played on four games above A-ball)

Price lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs, including a three-run homer to third baseman Kaleb Cowart. Russell Martin cut the lead to just one in the ninth, but Pedro Feliciano held on for a save, with Felix getting the win.

first win

The Beavers turned on the offense in the second game of the season to defeat Seattle 9-5. Fernery Ozuna, Steve Moya, Andrew McCutcheon, and Russell Martin all homered in the win, with Moya collecting three hits. C.J. Edwards pitched 5 2/3 innings to collect the victory. Light-hitting outfielder Travis Witherspoon was ejected in the first inning after arguing balls and strikes.

opening of Nike Stadium

April 4 was a great day all around for the Beavers organization. 41,623 were in attendance as Nike Stadium opened, and the Beavers hosted and defeated the Mariners 4-1. Matt Andriese, the top pick in the expansion draft, pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings, striking out eight, and designated hitter Kevin Brown drove in two in the fifth inning, which was all the Beavers would need.

Nike Stadium seats 42,000 overall. It's a retractable-roof field located in northeast Portland. It skews as a pitchers' park, and slightly favors right-handed hitters.

Also, the Beavers officially signed pitcher Tyson Ross for two years and $10M. He will slot in as the #2 pitcher but will make a couple starts for the Bend Mountaineers before joining Portland.
