Baseball in Montreal - Je me souviens or Summer of 69

As you may see at my stone-old dynasty http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...g-america.html
I have been playing OOTP for a very long time.

But now my laptop was getting old and it was time to move on to a new project, this time not on OOTP 9, but on OOTP 15.

To start with I'm from Europe and I didn't grow up with baseball at all. In the early 90'es I was that strange guy starting to follow the MLB and NFL via USA Today and listening to AFN. The 1994 strike ended my enthusiasm and I only came back to follow baseball when regular internet access became common over here.

I always liked small market teams like the Expos, Brewers, Twins, Blue Jays or Rockies - and this dynasty is going to start with 1969 expansion in Montreal.

I also plan to play every game in detail, but in contrary to my Milwaukee Brewers / Winnipeg Bisons dynasty I will post not about every game or every move.

Injury frequency is set to normal.
Trading frequency is set to low.
Trading difficulty is set to hard.
All pre-1969 records were removed.

So here we are 26 year old Taiwanese/Québecois André Pandaliau is taking over day-to-day management of the Montréal Canucks.

Between Expansion Draft and Opening Day 1969

As some people argue the (real) modern era of baseball started with the 1969 season:
The mound was lowered,
the strike zone got smaller,
5-man rotations became common,
and the save was introduced.

And last but not least MLB expanded from 20 to 24 teams.
The Kansas City Royals and Seattle Pilots joined the AL West, the San Diego Padres became a member of the NL West and my Montréal Canucks (Expos) joined the NL East.

While the American League had a good regional alignment, the National League was a regional mess:

Between Expansion Draft and Opening Day 1969

I took over management after the expansion draft was done already.

The Padres took Ollie Brown with the 1st overall National League pick, while the Royals picked Roger Nelson with the 1st American League pick. Seattle chose Don Minchner while the 1st Montréal pick Manny Mota was quickly traded to Los Angeles for Ron Fairly and Paul Popovich.

My aim with the 1969 Canucks is to have the best record of the four expansion teams and try finishing better than last in the NL East. The expansion roster I got to work with had big holes and I started to scout around the league for small upgrades.

In four separate trades I got the following minor leaguers (or angry big leagues demoted to AAA):
- reliever Zachary Muggleston from Boston
- C Jake Gibbs from the Yankees
- starting pitcher Jaime Ramos from the Cubs
- 2B Bill Mazeroski from Pittsburgh

To get them I traded away:
- reliever Carroll Sembera
- reliever Roy Face
- 2B Francisco Alba
- C John Bateman
- SS Gary Jestadt
- LF Ty Cline
- RF Walt Cornwell

The one big trade I made was a painful one, that led to angry fan reactions. The 2nd round expansion draft pick Mack Jones was easily one of our best hitters and he would also give us 20 or more homeruns. But he was slated to play CF, where he was more than horrible. LF and RF were occupied as well, and I simply couldn't have such a lousy defensive every day CF.

So after long negotiations I sent Jones back to his old team, the Reds, along with SS Remy Hermoso and reliever Larry Jaster. In return I got Bobby Tolan who is seven years younger. Tolan has better speed and a much better defender. While he won't hit as many homeruns as Jones, he should have an higher average.

Between Expansion Draft and Opening Day 1969

The trade for CF Bobby Tolan was the last Montreal move during pre-season. While I'm optimistic that our lineup can cope with big league pitching, our pitching is a big question mark.

The Opening match-up between the Mets Tom Seaver and our "ace" Jerry Robertson speaks for itself.

Pre-season prediction see
Baltimore
Minnesota
Pittsburgh
and Atlanta
winning their divisions.

Kansas City is the only expansion team to reach .500, while Seattle (95), San Diego (97) and we (99) are all close to lose 100 games. Cincinnati (96) , Cleveland (98) and the White Sox (102) are predicted to struggle badly as well.

Before we enter the first Opening Day of the Montréal franchise, here a final look on our lineups and annual minor league prospect report.

Opening Day 1969 Montréal at NY Mets

The long awaited day came and the highly favoured New York Mets hosted the expansion Montréal Canucks on Tuesday, April 8th, 1969.

Two time All-Star and 1967 Rookie of the Year Tom Seaver against virtually unknown rookie Jerry Robertson. During the whole game you wouldn't know who is the ace and who is the rookie with limited stuff. We took the lead after a W. Garrett in the 2nd. The Mets got on the board in the 4th after a K. Boswell solo shot. But Robertson was really dealing, while Seaver was struggling to get ahead in the count. After Robertson hit a triple in the 7th, we took a 3-1 lead. Even if the Mets threatened and scored in the 8th, I decided to give Robertson the chance to finish the game. He walked the lead off man in the bottom of the 9th, but retired the final three batters for an unlikely 2-hit complete game opening day victory for the Montréal Canucks.

Robertson collected a 76 game score. Also Rusty Staub our star player had a very good day, going 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Our minor league teams went 2-1. Ottawa (AAA) and Saskatoon (AA) won, while Kingston (A) lost.

Montréal 3B Coco Laboy writes history

After our opening day win over the New York Mets we somehow managed to lose the series nevertheless even if they were just hitting .125 as a team. Obviously our bats stayed rather quiet as well, scoring only four runs in our first three games of the season.

Our next series would see us travel to Wrigley to face the Cubs who had a 1-2 record as well.

Cubs starting pitcher Ksapavana Chandak struggled from the first pitch and was gone after 1 1/3 innings giving up a grand slam, eight hits and eight earned runs. Our big hero was 3B Coco Laboy who set a new NL regular season record with 7 RBIs - all of them coming in first three innings. The score by then was 11-0 and the Cubs wouldn't come back. Our starting pitcher Steve Renko went the distance, giving us the second complete game of the season.

The Tigers are the only undefeated team left, while the Giants are still winless.

Sweeping the Cubs - Hope opener against the Cardinals

The Cubs were supposed to be a solid team in 1969, but nevertheless I got my first sweep in franchise history at Wrigley. The first game was as described a blowout (11-3). Game 2 was played in bad weather and had a longer rain delay. My No 5 starter Ramos didn't give up any runs in five innings, but eventually the bullpens were decisive. Cubs reliever (!) Joe Niegro gave up two runs in the 11th and my stopper Dan McGinn got his first save. In the series finale my "ace" Robertson outdueled Fergie Jenkins for a 6-1 win.

With a 4-2 record and tied for the division lead we welcomed the St. Louis Cardinals to beautiful Jarry Park. Maybe the people of Montréal were still more in mood for hockey as the park was only filled with 25,272 souls and by no means a sold out. The game itself was another pitchers duel between Cards ace Steve Carlton, who has not given up a run so far this season and my pitcher Bill Stoneman. The Cards took a 2-0 lead into the 9th, but almost blew the lead, winning 2-1.

Elsewhere the [B]Reds/B] CF Mack Jones won the player of the week award by hitting .480, 4 HR, 7 RBI. As you may remember I traded him away for Bobby Tolan just before opening day. Tolan is struggling badly so far hitting .150 with no HRs or RBIs and just one stolen base.

Cubs losing streak ends at 10 - Montréal 8-5

After splitting a two game series at Philadelphia, we opened a three game weekend series against the hopeless Cubs who lost eight in row coming into Montréal.

We won also the first two games of the series, before losing the second game of a day/night double header. This meant the Cubs losing streak ended at 10. What a horrible start for this team that was considered to be a contender by some before the start of the season.

During the week the Yankees lost their ace Mel Stottlemyre Sr for the season and Minnesota icon Harmon Killebrew hit his 400th career homerun.

Player of the week honours went to:

CF Reggie Smith - Detroit
and
1B Willie McCovey - San Francisco

The only expansion teams that does as badly as expected so far are the Kansas City Royals and the San Diego Padres.

The revenge of Bill Mazeroski

We played .500 ball in the third week of the season. Losing two at St. Louis, splitting two against the Phillies and winning two at Pittsburgh.

Our ace Jerry Robertson is the NL's first four game winner and has an impressive 1.45 ERA. Also our starters No 2, 3 and 4 do much better as feared when the season started.

Also 1B Donn Clendenon and 3B Coco Laboy are red hot, sharing the NL lead in RBI's with 17.

But the best story of the week was the homecoming of 2B Bill Mazeroski, who was a life long Pirate before being sent to AAA Anchorage (!) in preseason. We had a gaping hole at 2B and traded for him. While we expected him to be a solid defender (2nd best in the NL) right now, we more less though he's be a more or less average batter. Anyway in our latest 9-2 win at Pittsburgh he hit his first homerun of the season, batting .302/.345./.415 for a nice .760 right now.

Players of the week & Power Rankings

We swept a three game series at the Pirates, but nevertheless their LF Al Oliver ran away with the player of the week after batting .481 with 4 home runs and 8 RBIs.
The White Sox LF Buddy Bradford won the AL award after hitting .524 with 4 home runs and 11 RBIs.

Meanwhile we lost one of our best prospects OF Miguel Nal (.270, 0 HR, 6 RBI at AAA Ottawa) for up the three months with a broken hand.

The latest power rankings saw us drop to 6th.

We finish our first month of existence with three games at the Mets.

Monthly recap - Montréal Canucks 1st May 1969

The first month of our franchise was a big success. We are 13-9 and 2nd in the NL East.

Series overview:
@ Mets - lost series one games to two
@ Cubs - swept three game series
vs Cardinals - split two game series
@ Phillies - split two game series
vs Cubs - won series two games to one
@ Cardinals - got swept in two game series
vs Phillies - split two game series
@ Pirates - swept three game series
vs Mets - three game series is tied

Who is doing well?
(1) the first four starters of the rotation. They collected 17 quality starts in 19 tries, while going the distance eight times.
(2) No 4 and 5 hitters Donn Clendenon and Coco Laboy. Both had a .300 and 20 RBI month.
(3) our baserunners. They are leading the league with 17 stolen bases.
(4) our defensive efficiency. We are 3rd in the league with 2B Bill Mazeroski and RF Rusty Staub doing especially well.

Who was doing badly?
(1) No 5 starter Jaime "Broadway" Ramos was completely overmatched collecting a 7.71 ERA with a 1.86 WHIP. We tried to skip his rotation turn as often as possible.
(2) the bench. Most of the bench players didn't do anything to force more playing time. The only bench players doing ok were IF Gary Sunderland and OF Steve Ritter.
(3) RF Rusty Staub. He was labelled as the clear star player of our team, but is hitting only .253 with 1 HR and RBIs. He played great defense and drew 11 walks, good for .340 OBP.
(4) Attendance. Despite doing well and being "new" in town we are drawing only 16,493 per game, last in the big leagues.

Good start in May

We started May by winning three out of four against other NL East teams in contention. In the process Jerry Robertson collected his 6th win and Steve Renko pitched his 5th complete game (in five tries). Bobby Tolan leads the league in stolen bases with eight and Coco Laboy continues his hot bat by hitting .351 with 4 HR and 21 RBIs.

37 year old RF Bobby Morton hit .435 with 2 HR and 9 RBIs to win the weeks AL Best Player Award.

The NL Best Player of the Week Award goes to LF Rico Carty after hitting .442 with 3 HR and 11 RBIs.

1st shutout by Stoneman - Aparicio 2000th career hit

After getting swept at Atlanta, we were more than happy to head home to Jarry Park where we are playing .600 ball so far.

The Reds came to town and we saw Mack Jones for the first time since trading him with two others for Bobby Tolan. Jones continues to have a very good season even if he cooled down a bit recently. Tolan on the contrary is finally starting to get on base more regularly. His 16 RBI are very solid for a lead off man and he still leads the league easily in stolen bases. Of course the Reds won this trade when you study the numbers below, but keep in mind that Tolan is an above average fielder, while Jones is a real behemoth in CF (he's doing just ok at LT where the Reds moved him).

The Reds are an all or nothing team swinging for the fences with every at bat, but their pitching is the reason why they struggle. In Game 1 of the series their pitcher broke completely down in the 7th and in Game 2 they never get anything going, while out pitcher Bill Stoneman pitched the first complete game shutout in franchise history.

White Sox SS Luis Aparicio collected his 200th career hit. He's 8th on the all time list.

Players of the week & Power Rankings

We lost the series finale to the Reds and fell to 3rd place in the division, now four games behind the Cardinals.

After the loss we fell down to 8th in the power rankings with the Tigers and Cardinals dominating their respective leagues.

Coco Laboy has the 5th best batting average the Major League being in one list with some very big and epic names.

Two starting pitchers won the Player of the Week awards:
Mike Kekich - Yankees
and
Mike Torrez - Cardinals

Good times - and very bad times...

After sweeping the Astros - including chasing their ace Larry Dierker early and a record setting eight walks effort by our SP Mike Wegener - we played as bad as you'd expect from an expansion team against the Braves.

While they are known for having great bats (even with Hank Aaron on the DL) our so far very solid starting pitching broke completely down. The first three games of the series were out of reach early, but we lost also the fourth game after a pitchers duel. After getting swept we fell to fourth place and a 20-17 record. In the power rankings we are down to 10th.

Next up is a three game series at Houston, where we hopefully will find back a way to win again.

Player of the Week awards went to:

CF Joe Pepitone - Yankees
and
C Carl Taylor - Pirates

Close to .500

If you told me we were close to .500 on May the 27th before the season, I'd have accepted this without any second thoughts. But we are standing at 22-21 after going 2-8 during our last ten games.
Pitching and batting were equally coming down to earth during the last two weeks. Our long wins came at Houston and Cincinnati.

Maybe the two upcoming home series against the below .500 Dodgers and Padres to close the month out bring a chance towards the better?

Player of the Week Awards:

LF Steve Whitaker - Seattle Pilots
and
LF Dick Allen - Philadelphia Phillies
