World Baseball Alliance
Taking us to a real more close to the twilight zone, the World Baseball Alliance is ready to be born and written about. The year is 2013 and a global baseball league is a reality. With the game not yet being global the majority of teams in this alliance are from the United States and baseball hotbeds. Still a growing love for the game especially in Europe has opened the door for our new league. The most popular fanchises in the game will be joined by new upcoming franchises from around the world to create our competition. The league will comprise of all modern day players who will be introduced through an inaugural draft. From that point forward every amatuer draft will include random names from baseball's past that will join our league and mold it future. Soon we will go into an indepth analysis of each franchise but first we want to introduce the league set up. There will be two leagues, the American and International. The American League will comprise only Amercian baseball teams. The International League will comprise teams from around the world but will include two American teams as well. Each league will have two divisions of six teams. The division breakdown will be as follows: American League Republic Division 1. New York Yankees 2. Brooklyn Dodgers 3. Baltimore Orioles 4. Washington Nationals 5. Philadelphia Phillies 6. Boston Red Sox Democratic Division 1. Chicago White Sox 2. Chicago Cubs 3. Cincinnati Reds 4. St. Louis Cardinals 5. Cleveland Indians 6. Montreal Expos International Division Euro Division 1. London Royal Knights 2. Athens Heros 3. Munich Black Knights 4. Rome Rebels 5. Dublin Celtics 6. Paris Power Coastal Division 1. Japan Dragons 2. San Juan Sol 3. Havana Fire 4. Mexico City Aztecs 5. Los Angeles Angels 6. San Francisco Giants Other rules to our league:
The inaugural draft of talent has taken place and an analysis of the franchises going into the 2013 season will follow. |

ATHENS HEROES Puig Takes On the Gods Maybe the most prominent talent in the league will be the headliner player in one of the less fancied teams in the new league. Yasiel Puig goes to Athens and will play among the ruined temples of the Gods in hopes of lighting a fire into the Greek team. Puig at only 22 years old is flamboyant and maybe the perfect player to take Europe by storm. Don't feel to bad for the Cuban who will be very far from home, Greece is known to have some of the best nightclubs in the world.
The Greeks have been questioned to if they deserve a team, but the 2004 Olympics showed that the city of Athens could be had with a winner, not to mention all of the history here. Maybe at the start the most popular player will be native son Mike Moustakas who is part of a good one core for this team. Jurickson Profar and Osvaldo Arcia round off a young roster of talent that can be good for years to come. The staff will be lead by Matt Garza and Homer Bailey but it is in the bullpen where the Hellenes will dominate. Craig Kimbrel and Ardolis Chapman headline the pen which should be able to hold down any lead. BALTIMORE ORIOLES Roster Concerns For Birds The Baltimore Orioles had the final pick in the first round of the inaguaral draft and saw a number of big names go by the boards. The Orioles did choose Mat Latos in the process and hope he can anchor a pitching staff that will have to carry an average roster.
Thirty three year old third baseman Adrian Beltre anchors the lineup but has very little support. The Orioles really lack the star power of most other teams but Buck Showalter doesn't seem to be worried about his teams ability to compete. "We may not have the household names but we have players that will battle you and scratch for 9 innings." Anthony Rizzo is a nice up and coming bat for the organization at first base. Many think the small market size and the holes in the roster will make it very hard for the Orioles to compete. BOSTON RED SOX Stardom Never Ages In Boston The Boston Red Sox have fans all over the world and the team has lived up to its reputation by putting together some of the biggest names in the sport for a team that wants to be elite. Albert Pujols and Justin Verlander may be past the age of 30 but both of these ballplayers are considered legends of the game and will garner a lot of attention even in the new league. CC Sabathia is another dynamic talent that should make for a lot of heat in the rotation; the Red Sox have few young players to speak of other then talented catcher Salvador Perez. Dexter Fowler and Mike Aviles will bring speed to Fenway Park that is likely to be filled on a nightly basis. A winner is expected for this team and at the very least a much better record then their rivals from New York. The Boston pen could be a bit of a concern for this strong team. BROOKLYN DODGERS Cano and Miggy Lead Strong Bums The Brooklyn Dodgers go straight away as one of the best lineups in the new league and possibly the favorites in the Republican Division. Few could argue that Robinson Cano and Miguel Cabrera are a dynamic duo that will score a ton of runs at New Ebbets Field. The Dodgers are one of the most beloved franchises in sports and the excitement for this team already is building. There is also the raw power of Josh Hamilton to watch but of course it is a matter of Hamilton having the right state of mind and staying healthy.
At the helm is maybe the best manager in baseball in Joe Maddon. Maddon is well respected and is expected to get the most out of this team. Pitching will be an issue, as 37 year old Tim Hudson will play a big role along with Lance Lynn and Shaun Marcum. In the pen the hard work will fall to Jonathon Paplebon. CHICAGO WHITE SOX Youth Gives Sox Hope The Chicago White Sox will be looking to build a foundation and give manager Robin Ventura a team that can be good for years to come, even if it means that the Sox don't win now. Power first baseman Paul Goldschmidt leads the charge and will be the powerbat in the lineup. Along with the big slugger, third baseman Josh Donaldson will hit in front of him and should see a lot of good pitches to drive. Evan Gattis can slug with the best of them and Evereth Cabrera will take the role of leadoff man, both players still well short of the age of 30. Lefthander Jaime Garcia leads a pitching staff that in all honestly cant match up with some of the others in the league. With US Cellular Field being such a hitters park, Hyun Jin Ryu and Vance Worley better keep the ball down. To help the young crowd the Sox did bring in local talent and favorite Curtis Granderson will patrol center field at the age of 32. "We are looking to build something that will last" says general manager Hawk Harrelson on the progress of this team. CHICAGO CUBS Cutch And The Cubs Believe The Chicago Cubs are prepping for the season and hope to be a major player in the pennant race, especially against their cross town rival White Sox. The Cubs are lead by whom many consider the most talented player in the game as Andrew McCutchen leads the club. McCutchen will patrol center field and brings a joy to the game that can be contagious. Billy Butler and Alex Rios help round off a talented roster while young Jean Segura is the hope of the future for the North Siders. Some think Dale Sveum is not the right man for the job but team management has shown faith in the manager who will have to keep the balance in the clubhouse. Roy Halladay will try to make a go of it on the mound but what he has at his age is a question; Doug Fister appears to be the real inning eater along with Ricky Nolasco. The Cubs have a very good following and will really cause excitement if they could have success on the field. CINCINNATI REDS NO DOUBT THE FAVORITES WEAR RED The oldest franchise in the game is built as the most powerful and most believe that this is the best team assembled, especially stateside. Joe Mauer, Adrian Gonzalez, and Evan Longoria create a lineup that cant help but score a ton of runs while Brett Gardner Jayson Werth add character and depth. Matt Scherzer knows how to conserve himself and win and will be glad to be the ace of this staff while James Shields is also a winner and a perfect compliment. Manager Dusty Baker loves to play with talented teams and will have a job to do to match the expectations. The team has grown greatly in popularity and there seems to be quite a bit of cashflow to try an assure this team does not fall short. CLEVELAND INDIANS Pitching Name of Game In Cleveland The Cleveland Indians and manager Terry Francona know that much of the hype has gone to their Ohio rivals from Cincinnati. The Indians are doing their own part to make sure they compete by assembling a pitching staff they feel will get the job done. "Baseball games are won with good pitching" says Francona who has the arms to frustrate lineups, even those of the Reds. Cole Hamels is the big arm from the left side and the ace of the rotation, followed by Johnny Cueto who has an assortment of pitches to work with. Jered Weaver and Kylo Lohse round out the rotation while the likes of Mark Buerhle could easily make an impact. It isn't like the Indians do not have any bats at all. Manny Machado is the young star in the middle of the lineup at only 20 years old while Chris Davis has all the muscle in the world if he can make contact. On top of everything else the Indians have some stellar defensive support with Andeltron Simmons starring at short. The Indians overall may be much better than people many think. DUBLIN CELTICS Kershaw Holds Luck Of Irish Everyone has heard of the luck of the Irish and this first pro baseball team in Ireland is sure to have their well wishers. Of course life will be made a whole lot more easy with the very best arm in the game pitching for this team in Cleyton Kershaw. No one dominates more then the lefthander and a staff with him and Andrew Cashner as well as the young Shelby Miller should be as good as it gets. Dustin Pedroia is the perfect grinder of the type of athletes this part of the world follows, while old veteran Todd Helton will try and prolonged his career to play his part.
There is a ton of excitement for this team and more then anything this team would at least love to become the best of Europe. A fierce rivalry with London is expected and the local games should be fun to watch. The Irish as always are up and ready for a fight! HAVANA TORROS Harper and Lester Lead Cuban Hopes Baseball will always be king in Cuba and for the first time the country will have its chance to compete in a league with the rest of the world. Cuba isn't worried about gathering local talent but rather are building a team with an eye on talent first. the volatile Bryce Harper is the star of the roster as the young outfielder will fit into the Cuban mindset and his great tools on the field should generate quite a following. On the mound a different type of star will lead the staff as John Lester will do his very best to appease the Cubans. No real word on who is running this team and how much the national Cuban government will have influence on how this team goes forward. Regardless it should be quite fun now that baseball is back in one of its most known hotbeds. JAPAN DRAGONS Dragons Expect To Win Now Baseball has always been a palace of respect in Japan and now the World League is surely to have this new franchise as a center piece. There is already a feeling that this team will be one of the better teams in the league from year to year and will do all things to win and dominate from the first inning of the first season. They also have a new king they can call their own as Felix Hernandez will take the mound as the team ace. Jeff Samardzija will be the other strong right hander supporting Felix in a very good rotation.
On offense it is all about a Prince to go along with the King. Prince Fielder goes back to the land where his father did quite well as a player and will be the most popular figure on this team. Pablo Sandoval brings another character to the team while Domonic Brown will also be given a chance to shine. Fan support should be sky high for this team but obviously so will the expectations. LONDON ROYAL KNIGHTS A Cup Of Tea For A Royal Game Baseball comes to the place where many still feel the game originated. The British now have a pro team of their own to learn and grow the game in their own unique manner. RA Dickey will be throwing his knuckleball as the team ace but the real strength of the team comes in the lineup and with its defense. Joey Votto is the most patient and maybe smart hitter in the game while Jay Bruce has as much power as anyone. Adam Jones is the all around player that will star for this team while JJ Hardy is a gamer that knows how to win. No player may know how to win more however then catcher AJ Pierzynski who will be behind the dish and will do all he can to mold a rotation that could be challenged. Francisco Liriano and Jorge De La Rosa will support Dickey, while Jason Grilli will have to prove himself as the closer. No doubt this team will be high profile, and the press as well as the fans will be fun to track for a city that has it all.
