Running On Empty: The Mariners in a Modern 1977

Well, here we go. Expansion Mariners in 1977 - with a twist.

Two divisions and two playoff teams per league just isn't enough - let's go three divisions and five playoff teams, just like modern MLB. (The alignment I'm using is 1994-97, except with Houston in the NL West to balance out the divisions.)

1/1/1977: OOTP is screwing with me already

I boot up the game, and a bunch of 100 year old guys are free agents. So I retire all those guys and desperately hope there aren't any more database errors that I didn't notice in my simtest.

3/1/1977: The First Offseason

1/11: Texas offers me a trade, 1B Jim Fregosi for 3B Bill Stein and SP Rick Honeycutt. I decline, because I can't afford to deal Honeycutt at this time.

1/31: Texas makes two moves. The Rangers trade C John Ellis to the Cubs for LF Bill Buckner, and place LF Dave May on waivers.

2/2: The Red Sox trade SP Rick Wise to the Astros for 3B Ken Boswell.

2/3 and 2/4: I claim two players on waivers, LF Dave May from the Rangers and SS Leo Foster from the Mets.

2/25: California offers me a trade. Once again, a team wants Honeycutt. I decline.

3/7/1977: End of the Offseason

3/4: Two trades take place. Expos acquire RF Bernie Carbo from the Red Sox for 2B Dave Cash and minor league RF Sam Mejias, and the Giants acquire RF Ralph Garr from the White Sox for MR Randy Moffitt and SS Johnnie "Boo" LeMaster.

3/5: I pick up MR Tom Griffin on waivers from the Padres.

3/7: Finishing my waiver pickups, MR Dave Hamilton is coming to Seattle as well. I'm probably going with an 11 man staff early in the season.

4/1/1977: End of Spring Training

Not much to report in spring training. The team went 12-12 during the 24-game spring season.

3/13: LF Dave May is injured, out for 1-2 weeks, and is placed on the 15-day DL.
3/28: LF Dave May returned from the DL.

The preseason predictions have the M's finishing 66-96.

4/4/1977: Homestand Preview

Note: Due to the realignment, I StickWare-d up a schedule for the 1977 season. As such, the schedules do not match the real-life schedules.

The Mariners open 1977 with a two-week homestand, with three games each against the Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers, and Orioles. The early schedule is very favorable to the M's, with no four-game series until Memorial Day.

4/4/1977: Opening Day Preview

The AI does its usual "waive a bunch of guys on Opening Day" routine, and because I'm a first year expansion team, I'm taking full advantage of this. Anyway, here's my roster for Opening Day, which of course is before the waiver claims take effect. Rookies underlined.

SP: Glenn Abbott, Rick Jones, Byron McLaughlin, Rick Honeycutt, Dick Pole
MR: Steve Burke, Stan Thomas, Diego Segui, Bill Laxton
SU: Dave Pagan, Dave Hamilton
CL: Enrique Romo

C: Joe Lis (vs. RH) / Bob Stinson (vs. LH)
1B: Dan T. Meyer
2B: Jose Baez
3B: Steve Braun (vs. RH) / Bill Stein (vs. LH)
SS: Craig Reynolds (vs. RH) / Jimmy Sexton (vs. LH)
LF: Leroy Stanton
CF: Ruppert Jones
RF: Carlos Lopez
DH: Dave May (vs. RH) / Dave Collins (vs. LH)

I played the first two games and lost both, but the game crashed before I could save.
