The Gorillas Blog

1st January 2013

The Mountain Jungle Blog

Welcome to the first online blog for all you Gorillas fans out there.

There was a press conference held today at the Los Angeles Stadium where the newly appointed GM Sean Johnson was presented. Sean Johnson said he had put in an all-nighter yesterday to cover all the work he had to do to settle into the job quickly. When asked why he chose the Los Angeles Gorillas he gave this reply.
'I've done my homework. I've scouted this outfit. I want to be here. These jobs aren't easy to get. You've got to hit the ground running.'

So a new GM at our favourite club. Do we think this will bring good fortunes in the new ABL or are we in for a long season. This blog cannot yet say but we will know more after tomorrows inaugural draft.

Well thats draft day done and dusted. Did the Gorillas get what they wanted? Are they set for a good year? Is Sean Johnson on the same wave length as the Gorillas fans?

The Gorillas were picking in 23rd Position in the odd rounds and in the 8th position in the even rounds for this inaugural draft. While not the best place to pick from, we think Sean has done well to get a team that could win now, if played correctly, but we are not so sure about the future of the team after the first couple of seasons as it seems a bit light on prospects.

Saying that the first round pick was a 24 year old Venezuelan Starting Pitcher called Brando Betrutti. Looking at his abilities this kid is going to bring home quite a few wins to California this and many years to come so there may be hope for the future as well if this guy stays fit and with the team.

All the players drafted are listed below. Make your comments and let us know what you think of the new GM's drafting skills.

Here we are again for the third edition. Spring training is upon us and the players have all reported on time.

Who are you looking forward to seeing? Who do you think might push their way into the active roster and who might not be up to scratch?

The first thing our GM Sean has done is increased the active roster to 40 players. As there have been no changes to personnel in the squads since the start of the years draft we list the 5 players that have not made it below.

Do you agree with our GM's selection on who to leave off the active roster.

The BNN network has also just announced their predictions for the new season. From the looks of it they don't reckon that our Gorillas are going to make the play-offs and will be lucky to play at an even .500. They do predict good seasons for both Brando Betrutti and Marcos Diaz with both being in their respective top 10's for the American Conference.

The put the Gorillas as third in their division with a predicted record of 76 and 86 being 11 games off first place. But hey what do the so called experts know. Go Gorillas.

Hi again all you Gorillas fans out there. Hopefully you have had a chance to catch one of our teams first spring training games this last week. If not here is the low down on how the Gorillas are shaping up before the season starts.

The Gorillas have played 9 pre-season games this past week and a bit. They have recorded a 5 wins to 4 loses record which is good but hey it is only pre-season right so nothing to be to worried about.

The results were as follows

1st March a 8-3 home loss to the Buffalo Swarm
2nd March a 5-3 home win against the Houston Lynx
3rd March a 8-6 away loss to the Miami Gators
4th March a 8-6 home win against the Seattle Ravens
5th March a 9-6 away win against the Chicago Dragons
6th March a 7-5 home win against the Denver Panthers
7th March a 6-5 away loss to the Indianapolis Cobras
8th March a 8-5 home win against the Fresno Blast
10th March a 11-2 away loss to the Washington Vultures

As for the players themselves there were no outstanding performers during the week but that may be due to manager Paul Hanson using the full 40 man squad to the utmost to assess all of the players.

One good piece of news is there are no injuries for the GM to worry about.

News Update for all you Gorillas fans out there. Our star closer Elmer Adams has picked up shoulder inflammation while pitching in yesterdays game. The club doctors have reported that it is not too serious but he will be out for about 2 weeks. This hasn't stopped Sean our GM from making a roster move by putting Elmer onto the 15 day DL list and bringing in Perez the last relief pitcher on the reserve roster to give him some game time.

We are back again for all you Gorillas fans out there. This week in Spring training Gorillas haven't looked anywhere near as ready for the season as we thought. They have played 6 games but lost 4 of those. One reason could be the fact that the GM and manager have been trying out some of the lesser squad members in starting positions to see if they are ready for the big time while resting a few of their probable starters with only sporadic at bats in relief during the games.

This weeks scores have been
11th March a 8-7 home loss to the New York Rangers
12th March a 9-8 away loss to the Pittsburgh Bears
14th March a 6-2 home win against local rivals the San Diego Scorpions
15th March a 6-5 away loss to the San Antonio Blitz
16th March a 9-4 home win against the St. Louis Tigers
17th March a 7-4 away loss to the Buffalo Swarm

This leaves the Gorillas at 7-8 but as it is only spring training we still have hope for a successful season ahead.

Another injury update for all you Gorillas fans out there. Our probable starting CF Brian Bacon has been diagnosed with a groin strain and the club doctors think he may be out for up to 2 weeks. Again the GM Sean Johnson did not waste any time with roster moves by placing Brian on the 15 day DL and promoting CF John Ford to the 40 man squad for the last couple of days spring training. We are not sure what benefit that will give John but the GM must know what he is doing.

Well that's it fans Spring Training is over and our Gorillas have not really looked up to the task.

They finished spring training with a 9-13 record. Hopefully this was due to the fact that the last few games were played with mainly second string players in the starting spots. Again we say that we are sure the GM knew what he was doing.

The final games read as follows
18th March a 10-5 away loss to Houston Lynx
19th March a 9-2 home win against Miami Gators
20th March a 8-6 away loss to Seattle Ravens
21st March a 7-6 home loss to Chicago Dragons
22nd March a 5-4 away loss to Denver Panthers
23rd March a 3-2 home loss to Indianapolis Cobras
24th March 8-0 away win against Fresno Blast

We now await the roster moves that Sean our GM will make to finalise his 25 man roster going into the start of the regular season.

Gorilla fans are you all excited and ready to go as it is here again. Opening day in the ABL is upon us. While the Gorillas don't play until the 1st April in a very early local rival match at home to the San Diego Scorpions, There has been news come out from the Los Angeles Stadium both about the clubs expectations and also roster moves by the GM.

The Club owners have announced that they are expecting a great season this year and are looking to the GM to deliver a superb season by winning it all and bringing the ABL Championship back to California.

We here at the blog are not sure this is realistic but will look forward to it if this does come about.

As for the roster moves there were no surprises within the GM's announcement after what was a tough Spring Training month. The only slight quirk was that Sean only announced 24 players in the active roster. He then explained that the empty space was being left for CF Brian Bacon who has only another 6 days out on the 15 day DL and is expected to take the 25th place once fit.

The Pitchers that have made the 25 are as follows.

The Batters in the 25 are as follows (we have included Brian Bacon as we assume he will be the 25th Man in the active roster)

Gorillas fans will be upbeat after the first series of the season as our team managed to win 3 games to 1 against the San Diego Scorpions at the Los Angeles Stadium.

There were some good displays during this set of games with only 1 drawback of an injury to one of the relief pitchers.

In the first game of the season a capacity crowd of 34817 patrons saw a 5-1 win. Brando Betrutti walked away with his first win of the season after pitching a solid 8 innings where he gave up 4 hits and 1 run and 7 strike outs with an ERA of 1.13. Elmer Adams then closed the game out by pitching the final innings. As for hitting very few of the team posted a display but lead off man & 2B Julio Alfaro did manage 2 hits and 2 runs from 3 at bats to help win the game. There was also a home run scored by RF Chris Allen in the 7th.

The second game of the season was again in front of a capacity crowd of 34807 patrons who saw a high scoring win 10-6. This time it was the Hitters that came to the fore as the Pitchers seemed to struggle. The story of the game was all in the first innings where the Gorillas broke the game open very early by hitting 5 runs on some woeful pitching and fielding by the scorpions. The hitting stars for the Gorillas were 3B Jeremy Whitley who was player of the game with 4 hits from 5 at bats and 1 run scored. Also SS Steve Smart had 3 hits from 4 at bats and 1 hit by pitch scoring 4 runs a new ABL record. The pitching was nothing to write home about Starter Stephen Randall got the win but in his 6.1 innings gave away 12 hits and 6 runs for an ERA of 8.53. Also Jaun Dominguez was injured while pitching in the 8th Innings.

A new crowd record of 34870 patrons was set for the third game of the series. They will have all gone home very disappointed though as the Gorillas relief pitching gave away 9 runs in the final 2 innings to hand the San Diego Scorpions their first win of the season in a 11-5 ball game. The problem is even without those 9 runs the Scorpions were likely to win the game any way as they were 5-2 up going into the final innings. The Gorillas had very few stars within this game as the team as a whole did not turn up. The starting pitcher was Frank Garrison who managed 7 innings for 5 hits and 2 runs for an ERA of 2.57. It was the relief pitching of Samuel Velasques, Victor Cruz and John Palmer, who between them in 1.1 innings gave up 8 hits for 9 runs including 3 home runs and ERA's for all of them over 20.00, that lost the game. The hitting was again nothing to write home about but CF Juan Villa had 3 hits and 2 runs from 4 at bats while the C Don Silver managed a home run.

The final game of the series saw the Gorillas back to winning ways in a close fought 5-4 game in front of a new record crowd of 34972 at the Los Angeles Stadium. There was no outstanding performance within this game and the Gorillas only walked away with this win thanks to a hold from Elmer Adams and a save by Alejandro Cabrera in the final innings as the San Diego Scorpions piled on the pressure with 2 runs to make it close. The SP Joey Hawkins pitched 6.2 innings but gave up 5 hits and 2 runs and an ERA of 2.7 before Victor Cruz took over for 1.1 innings to finally come away with the win. In the hitting department there were only really 3 players turning up. 3B Jeremy Whitley managed 2 hits and 1 run from 3 at bats, 1B Butch Langley managed 3 hits and 1 run from 4 at bats, Star man was RF Dave Edwards 2 hits and 1 run via a home run with 3 RBI's from 4 at bats.

Overall it was a good series for the Gorillas to start with as it is always nice to put a marker down against a local rival. The Hitting will need to improve if the Gorillas are in it for the long run but overall this blog is happy with the start.

Juan Dominguez is out for between 1 and 2 weeks with a tired arm picked up in the second game of the series. There hasn't been any change in the active roster as GM Sean Johnson has stated that they hopefully have enough relievers in the bullpen to cover this for that short amount of time.

The Gorillas are next up against the 1-2 Denver Panthers in Denver. Hopefully they will come back with a 2-1 win in that series to add to the good start.

The optimism Gorillas fans felt after their strong start to the season soon disappeared after their first on the road series. Denver proved amiable host in every way apart from what happened on the field as as the Gorillas came home with a 0-3 record from this series. Here is the low down on the games (I hope you fans have strong stomachs as they are not pretty).

Games 1 of the series was a fairly close affair up to the end of the 6th innings where both teams were tied on 5-5 but a bad 7th from SP Brad Pearson where he gave away 2 runs followed by another run lost by RP John Palmer opened this game up and a late rally in the 9th by the Gorillas was to little to late as they went down 7-9. Brad Pearson took the loss. In the Batting department it seems the Gorillas had a good game but just didn't have enough to make up for the deficiencies of the pitching. 5 Hitters managed 2 hits apiece with the stand out being C Don Silver who also had 1 run scored and 3 RBI's (one of which was a HR) which gave him star man for the game.

Game 2 of the series again looks like a close affair but without a late rally from the Gorillas batters to score 5 runs in the last 2 innings it could have been far worse. As it was a 7-6 loss will not be easy to take from this one. SP Brando Betrutti showed why, at 24, he still has some way to go to being the all star starter the Gorillas know he will be as he pitched a bad 6.2 innings giving up 9 hits and 7 runs for a losing ERA of 5.14. LF Marcos Diaz was star man in the game for his batting with 3 hit and 2 runs with 2 RBI's as he starred in the late come back but it was all in vane as the Gorillas went down to their second loss in the series.

Game 3 of the series wasn't as tight as previous 2 as a tired looking Gorillas team failed to trouble the scorers in a 0-3 loss. There were only 4 hits for the entire batting line up and they never looked in the game from the start. The SP Stephen Randall gave a valiant effort from the mound giving 8 hits and 3 runs in 6.2 innings but with no help from the plate he was always going to pick up his first loss of the season.

This blog is very disappointed with the performance from this first road trip and if this is any guide to the season then the Gorillas are going to have to make sure that all their home games count as they are going to need them if they are to get close to the play-offs.

The Gorillas have a day off on the 8th April before travelling to Fresno for a 3 game series. They will need that day to rest and also sort out their away day troubles if they are to get anything from the next road series.

The only good thing to come out of these 3 days was that CF Brian Bacon is back from the 15 day DL and means we have a full 13 batters in the roster so hopefully that will help the batting out.

I have to report again that the Gorillas fans have had to endure another rough road trip this past few days. The Fresno Blast clearly knew the Gorillas weaknesses and made them pay with a 2 games to 1 win. The only saving grace being the last game win for the Gorillas to show some fight away from home. This final game win may have been due to the fact that GM Sean Johnson and Manager Paul Hanson had to make some changes to the starting line up due to an injury to LF power hitter Marcos Diaz who went down in the second game with a strained back and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. He was moved to the 15 day DL and LF Alejandro Hernandez was drafted in from the reserve squad and straight into the starting line up and wow what a start.

Game 1 of the 3 game road trip saw our Gorillas go down 3-1 to Fresno. Again the hitting didn't turn up with a 4 hit game only which left SP Frank Garrison out in the cold for the loss on 7 very good innings. Garrison had only 5 hit and 2 runs scored off of him. Shame the batters cannot perform up to the same standard.

Game 2 was a major blow out for the Gorillas as they went down 11-4 with the batters again not turning up until the game was lost in the 6th innings. SP Joey Hawkins left the game with a sore arm but is listed as day to day but was still credited with the loss from his 5.2 innings with 7 hits and 5 runs against him. The batting highlights were again few and far between but C don Silver did manage his 3rd home run of the season and SS Steve Smart 1 run and 1 hit with 2RBI's off 3 at bats. Marcos Diaz was injured in this game

Game 3 saw the Gorillas enter the field of play with a different line up and it was noticeable early that they still weren't with it as they were down 4-1 after the first innings forcing the SP Brad Pearson to be pulled straight away. Hopefully he will recover from that embarrassment. It could be seen that there were some very stern words being said in the dugout from Manager Hanson to the players while this was going on. What ever he said and changes he made must have worked as from the 4 innings onwards the Gorillas were a different team. The Gorillas went on to score 2 runs in the 4th and then 5 in the 6th to blow the game wide open to finish with an 10-5 win. Batting highlights come from 3B Jeremy Whitley with 4 hits and 1 run with 1RBI in 5 at bats and new starter LF Alejandro Hernandez's 4 hits and 2 runs off 5 at bats. In total 7 of the line up got hits which is a marked change from the last 3 games.

Hopefully, while this road loss drops the Gorillas to 4-6 in games and 3 back from 1st place, the last game showed some improvement that might give hope for better performances and results to come.

Next up is a 3 game home series against the Indianapolis Cobras which will be tough for our guys as they are 6-3 for the season.

The Gorillas continued the poor early season form by dropping 2 out of the 3 games to the highly rated Indianapolis Cobras.

Game 1 of the series saw the Cobras leave the Los Angeles Stadium with a 6-4 win. SP Brando Betrutti is having a tough time on the mound at the moment as he went only 4 innings for 9 hits and 5 runs and his second loss of the season. The hitting was sporadic with no outstanding performance from any batter. The best was RF Chris Allen with 2 hits and 1 run scored on a home run and 3 RBI's from 4 at bats for star man and the 34877 fans had to leave with only that that small comfort.

Game 2 of the Series saw an improvement give the Gorillas their only win of the series in the high scoring 9-8 game. The Gorillas were up early 6-3 after 3 innings but then tried to lose the game through innings 5-7 by letting 5 runs go before their batting sparked again to score the winning runs in innings 7 and 8. Pitching was led by SP Stephen Randall with 6 solid innings for 6 hits and 6 runs before the relievers finished the game with a second win for RP John Palmer and a second save for Alejandro Cabrera. The Batting improved in this game with 7 batters getting at least 1 hit and 6 of those scoring a runs. The Best of the bunch was again star man RF Chris Allen who had another home run in a 3 hit 1 run 4 RBI day from 5 at bats. Alejandro Hernandez also scored a home run.

Game 3 of the series saw the Gorillas slip back to the loss column 4-2. Again in this game the Batting was showing all it's frailty as they didn't spark until innings 7 and by that time they were already 4 runs down and couldn't make the comeback. SP Frank Garrison did not fair that well on the mound in this loss. He only went 3.2 innings before leaving the game with an injury. In that time he managed to earn the loss with 3 hits and 1 run scored against him.

We are not sure where the Gorillas will go from here but there is definitely a need to find some batting if they are to improve. Perhaps they should go back to the drawing board for the line-up and look at shaking things up.

Their next series starts today at home to Denver who are currently 7-5 and beat our Gorillas 3-0 in the last series held in Denver. Hopefully we can avenge that in this home series.

How about that Gorillas fans, the team has suddenly found a bit of form and extracted revenge against Denver with a 3-0 series win. Also these three games showed that the batters can play with 2 games won by them rather than the pitching staff.

GM Sean Johnson and Manager Hanson made a few changes for these games as they dropped 1B Butch Langley who had been hitting .321 this year and moved Jeremy Whitley from 3B to 1B. Steve Smart moved from SS to 3B and then they bought Jose Varela in to the SS position. This change in the infield seems to have made things click in this series.

Game 1 was a wonderful 8-7 comeback win with the middle and lower order of the batting line-up scoring three superb runs in the 9th to bring home the win. While the star man went to Denver the batting of Steve Smart in his new position of 3B with 2 hits and 2 runs and 1 RBI and a walk was the stand out batter closely followed by Chris Allen now playing at RF. Both batters also got home runs, Chris's taking him up to 5 for the season and Steve's up to 3 for the season. The pitching wasn't anything to write home about. SP Joey Hawkins, who was a doubt for the game due to only just recovering from a day to day injured shoulder, pitched 4 innings for 5 hits and 6 runs. The relief pitching was better giving only 1 extra run in the last 5 innings and the win going to Samuel Velasques.

Game 2 was tight up until the 7th innings where both teams were tied on 3 runs a piece but then a 4 run blast from the Gorillas batters gave them the game with the final score of 7-3. Star Man was 1B Jeremy Whitley who had 3 hit and 1 run with 5 RBI's from 4 at bats closely followed by 3B Steve Smart who had 4 hits and 2 runs from 4 at bats. Jeremy also hit his first home run of the season. The pitching was strong with SP Brad Pearson picking up his first win of the season from 8 innings with 8hits and 3 runs against him.

Game 3 was also a tight affair with both teams SP in great form. The Gorillas batters managed to eke out the extra run to get the win 2-1. Star Man was SP Brando Betrutti who had a hot game this time round with 8 innings pitched for 7 hits and only 1 run scored to win his 2nd game. The Batters while quiet had 1 good performance from LF Alejandro Hernandez who had 2 hits 2 runs and 2RBI's to help win the game. He also picked up his 3rd home run of the season.

Today the Gorillas have a day off before they travel the long distance to Pittsburgh to face the Bears who are 3-13 for the season. While this may look easy on paper no game is won until you beat the team on the field so we shall see if the Gorillas away form can improve.

Well Gorillas fans we seem to be seeing a pattern emerge here early in the season as the team suffered another road series defeat 2-1 against the Pittsburgh bears. The Team really need to find some consistency away from home if they are expecting to be better than a middle of the road team.

Game 1 saw the Gorillas put down a good marker for the series with a 2-1 win in a tight game. Star man was SP Stephen Randall who pitches 8 good innings to finish with the win on 6 hits and 1 run allowed. The batting wasn't that hot but 2B and lead off man Julio Alfaro did manage 4 hits and 1 run from his 5 at bats. CP Elmer Adams picked up his 3rd save of the season.

Game 2 saw the Gorillas get blanked in a 0-3 loss. SP Frank Garrison picked up his 3rd loss of the season while he is yet to win a game. Perhaps he is not what is needed in the middle of the rotation? The batting was non existent again and really needs to learn how to hit when not on home grass. All in all a bad outing for all concerned.

Game 3 saw an improvement from the last game but the Gorillas still went down to a close loss 4-5. The were leading 3-0 after the first innings but then the Bears just rode them down the rest of the way to win it. Star man in the game was 1B Butch Langley, who was given a spot start in this game by Manager Hanson, as he had 2 hits and 2 RBI's from 3 at bats. SP Joey Hawkins gave up 3 runs and 9 hits from 6 innings but was not credited with the loss as the winning run was scored off of RP Juan Dominguez for his first loss of the season.

Well fans we did say these games are always easier on paper than when played for real as the Gorillas lost the series away from home again. Next up is a road trip to Florida to play the Miami Gators who are 11-8 this season so far. We at the blog are not expecting the away day blue to change anytime soon so do not look forward to reporting to you from this series.

Gorillas fans got exactly what they expected from the 3 game road series in Miami. The team managed to win only 1 of the 3 games to lose the series 2-1. What made it all the worse to take was that the team also made the national press due to a seriously bad performance on the mound in the second game.

Game 1 was the only win of the series as the Gorillas beat Miami 6-5 with a single run in the 10th innings. This was a real team performance as there were no stand out stars with either bat or ball. C Don Silver did manage his 4th home run and substitute Rick Teague also managed to score a home run. SP Brad Pearson managed 6.2 innings for 5 hits and 5 runs. The Win went to closer Elmer Adams.

Game 2 was where the disaster of the series happened in a 3-9 loss. The Miami Gators SS John Jones produced a stunning display to score 3 home runs against the Gorillas pitching. SP Brando Betrutti suffered a major learning experience as he was pulled after only 0.2 of an innings being pitched as he was slapped for 5 runs in the first innings to gain his 3rd loss against 2 wins. The Batting also failed to turn up for only 3 runs. Alejandro Hernandez did manage to get his 4th Home run of the season in this loss.

Game 3 was a much closer game but again the Gorillas failed to win as the score was 5-6 in the Miami favour. Jeremy Whitley held the batting together during the game with his 2nd Home Run of the season on a 2 hit 1 run and 3 RBI game. Steve Storm also produced with 2 hits and 2 runs. The pitching was nothing to write home about as Stephen Randall allowed 4 runs in the first innings to finish with the loss after 3 innings and 5 hits for 4 runs.

If the Gorillas continue to give away 4 and 5 runs in the first innings as they have done in the last 2 games then we here at the Mountain Jungle blog don't expect many wins coming their way.

The next series is a 4 game run at home to the Buffalo Swarm who stand at 14-7. The Gorillas will need to be at their best if they are to get any wins from this set of games.

As an extra for all you fans there are rumours around the team that GM Sean Johnson might be looking around the league to see if he can find a way to strengthen the batting line up with a trade. You will here about it here first if he does make any moves.

The Gorillas 4 game home set was split 2-2 with the Buffalo Swarm this last few days. The Games were more noted for the dropping of SS Jose Varela and RF Dave Edward to the reserve roster. This roster movement made it possible for LF Marcos Diaz to come back from the 15 day DL and for SS Craig Everett to be promoted to the active roster.

Game 1 finished 11-4 in the Gorillas favour. The Star Man in the game was 3B Steve Smart with 2 hits 1 run and 4 RBI's including his 4th home run of the year from 4 at bats. Craig Everett in his first start of the season saw him go with 3 hits and 3RBI's from 5 at bats. 2B Julio Alfaro managed 5 runs in the game and was walked 4 times. SP Frank Garrison managed his 1st win of the season from 5 innings pitched with 4 run and 6 hits against him.

After the game Julio Alfaro rocked the harmony of the team when he announced he had made comments to the management that he wasn't happy being the lead off man but would prefer to hit from the middle of the order.

Game 2 saw a 2-4 loss for the Gorillas. There was very little batting to speak of apart from 2B Julio Alfaro who pushed his claim to be moved in the order with 2 hits and 1 run from 5 at bats. SP joey Hawkins failed again to register a win in his 5th game on the mound and must now be worrying if he will continue to get the start.

Game 3 was a win for the Gorillas 6-4. All the damage was done in the 1st innings where the Gorillas managed to score 5 of their 6 runs. The win went to SP Brad Pearson who pitched 7.2 innings with 7 hits and 3 runs given up. The Chief batters doing the damage were LF Alejandro Hernandez with 3 hits 1 run and 1 RBI and C Don Silver with 1 hit 2 runs and 1 RBI. We can see why Alejandro is keeping Marcos Diaz on the bench since hie return from injury.

Game 4 saw the Gorillas having to share the series after a 1-2 loss. SP Brando Betrutti suffered his 4th loss of the year but did manage to last 7.2 innings this game before being pulled. The batters did not turn up for this game with only 5 hits and 1 run scored.

The Gorillas are at home again for the next series against Fresno. Hopefully they can improve going forward or their could be changes in the front office as there are murmurings that the owner is not happy about the current record.

That's April finished Gorillas fans. Hopefully a new month will bring better fortune to our team. The 3 game series at home to Fresno bodes that it might. Again the GM Sean Johnson and Manager Hanson made some changes to the line ups for this series. They dropped RF Chris Allen to the bench as he was going through a cold streak and promoted LF Marcos Diaz up to play in his place at RF (which he can do).

Game 1 saw the Gorillas continue their downward spiral when they lost big 5-11. This was another of those games where the Gorillas were down early letting 3 runs go in the first innings and then they never recovered. SP Stephen Randall to his 3rd loss of the season on 2.2 innings pitched for 7 hit and 6 runs against him. The Relief pitching fared no better. The Batters fared no better not getting going until the 7th innings when 4 runs were scored to make the game look slightly better. Best of the bunch was Marcos Diaz who coming back from injury had 2 hits and 1 run with 2 RBI's from 5 at bats.

Game 2 saw the gorillas first win in the series with a 4-3 score line. This comeback win was done in 11 innings for the longest game of the season so far. Star man was 3B Steve Smart with 2 hits and 1 run with 2RBI's from 5 at bats. Also having good games were Jeremy Whitley and Marcos Diaz. The SP was Frank Garrison who pitched 8 solid innings with 9 hits and 3 runs against. The win went to closer Elmer Adams.

Game 3 was another close extra innings affair which the Gorillas won 5-4. Star man was Marcos Diaz who had 3 hits 2 runs and 3 RBI's from 5 at bats. The SP Joey Hawkins managed 4 innings before being injured. He gave up 2 hits and 1 run. The win went to Samuel Valesques.

Joey Hawkins injury has been confirmed as a nasty one. He had a strained forearm and the club doctors are saying he could be out of action for up to 3 months. The GM wasted no time in putting Joey on the 60 day DL and then he promoted SP Juan Pineda from the reverse roster. Pineda will not start though as spot SP Melvyn Ramey is slated to get the place in the rotation. If this is the case it is very likely that his first start of the year could be in the first game of the next series against the New York Rangers which starts tomorrow.

CF Jaun Villa also announced to the press today how happy he was playing for the team and that he would be looking to extend his contract that runs out at the end of the season. There has been no news yet from the club on if they are willing to extend the 31 year old's contract.

For all you stats fans we have produced the April stats for the team so that you can see where the Gorillas are winning and losing games.

Hello all you happy Gorillas fans out there. Wasn't the trip to New York great. Our team went in there and showed the east coasters that we meant business with a 3-0 series win.

Game 1 was a good start with a 6-5 win. New SP Melvin Ramey got off to a good start with his first win from 5 innings pitched with 5 hits and 2 runs against him. CL Elmer Adams came away with his 5th save of the season. The Batters took the game away from the New York Rangers in the middle innings. They were led by Marcos Diaz who had 1 hit 1 run and 2RBI's from 4 at bats including his 4th home run of the season.

Game 2 was an 8-4 win where the batting again took the game away from the Rangers during the middle innings. They were helped by some splendid hitting from star man Steve Smart who had 1 hit 3 runs 3 RBI's and 3 walks from 2 at bats. Also Steve and Marcos Diaz both scored their 5th home runs of the season and either of them could have been star man. They are both giving this middle of the line-up a very strong look these last few days. SP Brando Betrutti picked up his 3rd win from 7.2 innings pitched with 5 hits and 3 runs against him. Juan Dominguez picked up a minor injury and will be a day by day decision for the next few days.

Game 3 was the closest game of the series finishing with a 4-3 win for the gorillas. The batting was again led by Marcos Diaz with 3 hits and 1 run from 4 at bats. SP Steve Randall picked up the win from 7 innings pitched with 7 hits and 2 runs against. Elmer Adams picked up his 6th Save and is starting to show his form as a closer.

After the 3rd game of this series there were 2 other pieces of news regarding Marcos Diaz to be announced to the media. The first came from the ABL head office that stated that the American Conference player of the week was awarded to Marcos Diaz for his fine form over the previous 7 days. In those 7 days he had 13 hits from 25 at bats with 4 home runs and 8 RBI's. The second piece of news was that the club announced they were in serious negotiations with Diaz over a new 6 year contract for him to stay at the club long term. No news yet on if this has been finalised but we will let you know as and when it is.

The next set of games for the Gorillas is away to the Houston Lynx who are 21-10 and will be a much tougher prospect than the New York Rangers were.

Gorillas fans returned to earth with a bump after this last series against Houston. The 4 game series was lost 3-1 and the Gorillas have headed back to a level record of 18-18.

Game 1 the good form that the team had was continued with a 7-6 win. Though there were rumblings of what was to come in the later games as the Gorillas went down 6-1 by the end of the fourth innings before fighting back to win the game. Jeremy Whitley led the fightback with 3 hits and 2 runs with 1RBI from 5 at bats. SP Frank Garrison lasted only 3.2 innings as Houston hit 6 runs in the 4th innings. The win went to Juan Pineda and a 7th Save for Elmer Adams.

Game 2 the Gorillas were blanked 0-3 and the whole team failed to turn up. The loss went to SP Brad Pearson. There were no batters that performed in this game.

Game 3 was another loss 6-10. The SP Melvyn Ramey gained the loss from 2.2 innings as the Gorillas early game woes returned and they let 5 runs go in the first 3 innings. The Relief pitching couldn't rectify this for the following innings. As for the Batting most of the players saw 1 or 2 hits but there was no outstanding player. Juan Villa did manage to get his first home run of the season.

Game 4 was another heavy loss 1-9. again the batters did not turn up at all. The SP Brando Betrutti got the loss from 3.1 innings with 11 hits and 5 runs against.

This run of bad form is starting to get worrying as the next set of games is a 3rd series away from home against local rivals the San Diego Scorpions. Both teams have 18 wins. Hopefully tiredness from 3 away series on the bounce will not affect the outcome of this series.

On much brighter news there was a media announcement today that the All-Star Calibre LF Marcos Diaz has committed himself long term to the team. He has signed a 6 year contract worth $124,000,000.

Fans calling into the local radio stations were all enthusing about how happy they were that Diaz has decided to stay.
