Fear the Spark | Tampa Bay Rays

Hey everyone! Some of you may remember me from the general discussions forum or from some of my previous dynasties (Blue Jays and Twins in OOTP 13, Padres in OOTP 14, and Pirates earlier this year). I was busy over the summer and was unable to continue my Pirates dynasty, but this one I am going to continue - slowly. I will be playing out every single game, including minor leagues, and posting day-by-day game reports. I will be playing in one-pitch mode, instant PBP. Here are my game settings and I hope you guys enjoy.

Tampa Bay Rays Organizational Rosters

(Note: Short season leagues have been omitted as they don't start until mid-season)

Tampa Bay Rays (MLB)

Pitching Rotation

LHP David Price: The ace of the staff. He won the AL Cy Young Award in 2012 and has had four straight seasons with an ERA below 3.50. However, he is getting pricey and could be a good trade chip if we're out of it at the deadline. He has above-average control, stuff, and movement. He throws four pitches: a plus sinker and plus slider and two above-average offerings in his fastball and changeup.

RHP Alex Cobb: Had a solid, if unspectacular 2012 before breaking out in 2013. He's a groundball pitcher who tops out at around 92-93. Has above-average stuff and movement and just about average control. He has three above-average pitches in his fastball, sinker, and curve, and a plus pitch in his changeup.

LHP Matt Moore: A very promising 24-year-old. Pitched very well the last two seasons and is on a very team-friendly contract. Has plus to plus-plus stuff and could put up serious strikeout numbers. His movement is above average, and while his control is currently below-average, it has the potential to be above-average. He only throws three pitches, but all of them project to be at least plus, with his slider and changeup showing the potential to be plus-plus. His fastball is a good offering.

RHP Jake Odorizzi: Pitched very well in Triple A last year and did alright in a brief 30 inning cameo. Was a key piece of the James Shields deal. He has a great work ethic. His stuff, movement, and control are all above-average right now. He has a four pitch arsenal: three above-average pitches in a fastball, curveball, and changeup, and a plus slider.

RHP Chris Archer: He pitched very well last year in a starting role, albeit without the strikeout numbers you might expect of him. Has above-average to plus stuff, stemming from his three plus pitches in a fastball, slider, and change. Average control right now however, and not expected to get much better. That might be his biggest issue this season.

Bullpen

LHP Jake McGee: Our closer for the season. Had an up and down season last year but was dominant in 2012. Has plus-plus stuff stemming off of two plus-plus pitches: a devastating fastball-slider combo. He has above-average movement and just average control, but he is still an elite relief pitcher in this league.

RHP Joel Peralta: One of our set-up men this season. Has been consistent over the past four years, with his highest ERA being 3.63. Very good stuff, with an above average fastball, plus splitter and plus-plus curveball. He has above-average movement and control and overall makes for another very solid relief pitcher in our bullpen.

RHP Josh Lueke: Has never been very good in the majors but has been elite in the minors and all of our scouts believe he can be a very good reliever. Plus-plus stuff thanks to a plus-plus curveball, plus fastball and plus splitter. Above-average movement and control. Overall, he is another good reliever in the pen if he can be consistent.

RHP Grant Balfour: The only Australian currently in the major leagues, Balfour has been consistent for the past four seasons, closing with Oakland in 2012 and 2013, with his highest ERA being 2.59 over that span. Plus-plus stuff, and above-average movement, but just average control. Has four plus pitches in his fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup.

RHP Heath Bell: A former dominant closer for the Padres who has seen his career jumble since 2012. He still is a very good reliever, however. Plus-plus stuff, above-average movement, and just average control. He has a plus fastball, above-average sinker, and plus-plus curveball. He will hopefully be a rock in the bullpen this season.

RHP Brandon Gomes: Another very good relief pitcher in this bullpen. Was bad last season, but I have no doubt he can turn it around. Plus-plus stuff, above-average movement, and just average control. Has three plus pitches in his fastball, slider, and splitter.

LHP Cesar Ramos: The other lefty and our bullpen and likely the weakest piece. Had a 4.14 ERA last season in 67.1 innings. A very good defensive pitcher but doesn't specialize at much else on the mound. Above-average stuff and movement and just average control. His pitch assortment is not great. Just average in his fastball and changeup and slightly above-average curveball and slider. He will be an OK lefty.

Lineup

CF Desmond Jennings: Has been around league average the past three years and plays above-average defense in center. As a hitter, he has average contact skills and slightly below-average power. He has a slightly above-average eye and is a plus baserunner.

1B James Loney: Hit pretty well last year for us and has hit well in the past for the Dodgers. He's an above-average defender at first base, and has above-average contact and eye skills. However, he's a limited runner and has below-average power for a first baseman.

3B Evan Longoria: The star of the team. On a hefty long-term deal. However, he sure is worth it. Is a great defensive third baseman. Has above-average contact, power and batting eye. However, he is fairly slow. Overall, he is the star hitter here.

DH Matt Joyce: Has been consistently solid over the past 3 to 4 seasons. Has average contract skills but above-average power and eye skills. He's an average to below-average fielder in right but will spend most of the season at DH. Limited runner.

RF Wil Myers: Key piece of the James Shields trade. Great all around skills. Above-average defense, contact, power, and eye. His only major flaw is that he is not a great runner. Won AL Rookie of the Year last season and looks to keep it up.

2B Ben Zobrist: A good switch hitting player. Can play plus defense at both second and right field. Average contact swing, but above average power and a plus eye. Average runner. Consistent over the past few years. Probably the most versatile player on this team.

LF David DeJesus: Has been more of a platoon man the last couple of seasons but will have a chance to start for us this year. Great defense in left field. Short swing allows for average contact, but below-average power. Good eye, however he is a limited runner.

SS Yunel Escobar: Great defensive shortstop who has a track record but is not an amazing hitter. Has above-average contact skills but below-average power. He's also very slow for a defensive-minded shortstop, but he gets great defense at the premium position.

C Ryan Hanigan: Had a terrible year for Cincinnati last year but is a fantastic defensive catcher and should improve his hitting. Good eye and average contact but not a power hitter and not a speedster. However, his defense at catcher is enough.

Bench

C Jose Molina: Old, but still serviceable backup catcher. Very good defensively, which is just what we want from a backup. However, he is a pretty bad hitter, with all of his hitting tools standing out as below average, and he cannot run to save his life.

INF Sean Rodriguez: Super-utility man, can play first, second, third, and shortstop in a pinch, and is average at all expect first. Hitting wise, he is below average, with below average contact and power and an average eye. He's an average runner.

2B/3B Logan Forsythe: Can play both second and third base for us, and is above-average at both. Below average contact and just average power, but he has a good eye. He is an average runner. Just another average bench player for this team.

OF Brandon Guyer: Can play all three outfield spots, with right field being his best destination. An average hitter at just about everything, contact, power and a slightly below-average eye. He's a good runner, and he tore up Triple A last year, so I have hopes for him as a bench player.

Tampa Bay Rays (MLB)

Opening Day was a pitcher's duel as both sides got great starts from David Price and Brandon Morrow, on the Rays and Jays, respectively. Price started out slowing, allowing two hits and two walks in the first two innings, but settled down to allow just one more hit the rest of his outing, he finished with 7 K's.

As for Morrow, he cruised until the seventh inning when Wil Myers took him deep for a two run shot, his first of the year to give us a 2-0 lead. Morrow finished the day after 7 and a third, allowing eight hits, 2 runs, with 6 K's. Steve Delabar got two outs, including one strikeout.

For us, Brandon Gomes pitched a scoreless eighth with one walk while Jake McGee closed it out with a quick ninth, allowing one runner to reach on catcher's interference while fanning two.

Desmond Jennings finished the day 2-for-4, while Ryan Hanigan doubled as part of a 1-for-3 effort. Evan Longoria struck out twice, going 0-for-4. For the Blue Jays, Colby Rasmus went 2-for-3.

Tampa Bay Rays (MLB)

We just could not generate runs in this one and were absolutely torched by Jose Reyes, who went 5-5 with five singles. We managed 8 hits but only got a runner past second once, Desmond Jennings.

Alex Cobb had the ball for us, and through the first three, he was fantastic, striking out six. However, he continued to get hit hard, but avoided damage. He exited after 114 pitches and six innings, allowing 7 hits and one walk with 7 K's.

Mark Buehrle pitched for Toronto, and had thrown just 34 pitches (!!) through five innings of work. We hit him hard for eight hits but just could not generate runs. He exited after 108 pitches and eight innings, allowing one walk and fanning 3. Sergio Santos pitched a scoreless ninth with one walk for his first save.

Josh Lueke came into the game in the seventh and immediately allowed Brett Lawrie a single after one pitch. One pitch later, Dioner Navarro singled to left. Lueke got Maicer Izturis swinging but Jose Reyes' single scored Lawrie. Lueke would finish up allowing three hits and one run in one inning of work. Joel Peralta pitched the final two for us, allowing two hits with one K.

Three of our guys finished the night with multiple hits: Jennings (2-4), Wil Myers (2-4) and Ryan Hanigan (2-4). Matt Joyce walked twice. Reyes went 5-5 for Toronto, while Colby Rasmus and Izturis both reached twice.

We took another tough loss late, this time in extra innings again to Toronto. Jose Reyes doubled on a blooper in the tenth to score Dioner Navarro, who had walked and been moved over by a Colby Rasmus sacrifice bunt. Despite four strikeouts, Grant Balfour's walk was costly and he picked up the loss.

It was disappointing, as Matt Moore pitched well, striking out six over six innings, allowing just 4 hits, 1 walk, and two runs. Heath Bell also pitched, 1.2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 run, and with three strikeouts.

We actually jumped on R.A. Dickey early in the fourth, with Matt Joyce doubling and scoring on a Wil Myers single. We scored two more in the seventh on a Ryan Hanigan single that scored two. Dickey finished with a final line of 8 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Sergio Santos pitched two perfect innings.

Joyce went 3-4 for us, while Ben Zobrist went 2-4. Maicer Izturis, surprisingly, had the only multi-hit game for the Jays, going 2-5. We head into the final game of the series looking for a split.

Minor league season starts today!

Tampa Bay Rays (MLB)

Another tough-luck loss as we drop the series, three games to one. We actually jumped out to an early lead but squandered and never picked up after a very good first inning. It started with Adam Lind's solo shot with two outs in the top half, followed by James Loney's two run shot in the bottom half. Edwin Encarnacion decided to follow that up in the top 2nd with a homer of his own, making it tied at two.

Odorizzi allowed one more run in the fourth before running into some trouble in the seventh. However, it was really not his fault. He was victim of a poor defensive play by Yunel Escobar that led to two runs coming home. Odorizzi finished after seven with 85 pitches throw: he allowed nine hits, five runs (three earned) with three strikeouts. Brandon Gomes pitched two no-hit innings with two walks and three K's.

Dustin McGowan was not great for Toronto, with 2 runs, 5 hits, 5 walks, and 6 K's over 6.2 innings, but he wasn't terrible either. He limited damage after the first inning home run and got out of jams. He struck out Evan Longoria four times, whose average now drops to .063 and has struck out in over half his at-bats.

Ryan Hanigan went 2-3 to collect his second multi-hit game this season, and he recorded a hit in all four games of the opening series. Zobrist and Myers also achieved that feat. For Toronto, Melky Cabrera went 2-5, while Edwin Encarnacion went 2-4 and Izturis went 2-4.

I accidentally simulated the world and missed out on the opening day minor league games, so here are the scores:

Durham 1, Gwinnett 4
Montgomery 2, Birmingham 4
Charlotte 3, Bradenton 0
Bowling Green 10, South Bend 8
