The San Diego Padres - 2025 and Beyond

(First time doing one of these, feel free to make suggestions)

The Road So Far:

The San Diego Padres shocked everyone with the surprise hiring of rookie GM Syrio Forel in 2014. Though green as grass, Forel was certainly not naďve to the situation in San Diego. “This is an organization that has struggled in recent years. I come to this club with a vision. The great teams of the late 90s. The superb pitching staff of the mid 2000s. These glory days seem nothing more than some distant memory. Teams that offered this city hope, but couldn’t quite reach that final goal. America’s finest city deserves a championship. That’s what I’m here to do. However, this is no easy task. There will be changes. The impact of these moves will not be immediate. We will struggle, but I ask the fans to not lose hope. Give me four years. Four. Years. And I will deliver you a team to be proud of.”

True to his word, the organization experienced an upheaval as veteran stars and huge contracts were dumped for draft picks and promising talent. In his first three years, the Padres struggled to compete at any level – Finishing no higher than 3rd place and earning no more than 78 wins. Forel asked for four years, and in his fourth year, his vision came together.

In 2017, the Padres led the division with 102 wins. They would go on to win the franchise’s first World Series. The first championship would open the floodgates, as the Padres would go on to make five straight playoff appearances, winning a total of four championships.

However, this success couldn’t last forever. The Padres are a small market team after all, with extremely limited funds. But Forel was always looking forward. As he moved out players that the franchise could no longer afford, a new group of fresh faces entered the picture. With many of these youngsters now entering their prime, Forel hopes to establish a new dynasty.

But with limited funds, the questions always loom. How long will the dream last? How long can the team afford these players?

The 2025 Outlook:

Coming off of two straight playoff appearances and the franchise’s fifth championship, The Padres open the season as the team to beat in the MLB. Riding the back of the most dominant pitching staff in baseball, the Padres’ goal for this upcoming season is to once again win it all. The question on everyone’s mind is “when will the window for this team close?” While many of the team’s star players are enjoying their prime, the team remains financially strapped. Nearly every key player is either in the last year of their contract, or is in the last year before arbitration. Reports suggest that the franchise has somewhere in the market of $17 million in the bank for extensions – A sum which may only let the team offer 1-2 players new contracts. The biggest concern is the contract situation of star 3B Brendan Rodgers. The anchor of the team’s lineup is in his last contract year, earning him a salary of some $24.88 million. The team faces difficult financial decisions in the months to come. Do they play the season out move-free, knowing that another championship is in their grasp? Do they make moves to free up the funds to re-sign Rodgers? Or do they trade their star, allowing them to potentially sign a few more players?

The Key Players:

Jose Rodriguez, C – The former 27th round draft pick has taken the baseball world by complete surprise. Rodriguez made his debut in 2023 and posted an impressive .354 BA and .427 OBP over 47 games. The young man’s numbers slipped some in his first full campaign, but he still achieved a solid .270 BA and .375 OBP. Rodriguez has established himself as the number one catcher and is hoping for a breakout season in 2025. He’s currently rated 79/80.

Brendan Rodgers, 3B – The pride and joy of the San Diego Padres. Drafted #1 overall in 2015, Rodgers quickly established himself as a premier talent. He was named baseball’s top prospect in 2016 and 2017, and made his MLB debut in 2017. He finished his rookie season with a .275 BA, .356 OBP, and 57 SB and finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting. In 2021 Rodgers hit the weight room and coupled a .290 BA with 32 HR, placing him 2nd in Hitter of the Year voting. The six-time All-Star enters the 2025 season rated 74/74.

Brad Sutherland, CF – The Padres are hoping Sutherland can bounce back from an injury-plagued season. The 22 year old missed nearly two-thirds of the 2024 season, and struggled to produce offensively in the brief time that he was on the field. The former Int. FA signing has yet to live up to his potential in his short career, but the Padres are hoping that he continues to develop into the offensive force that they expect. The young man enters the 2025 season with a rating of 77/80.

Beau Burrows, P – The Padres scored another solid talent from the 2015 draft class with the 9th overall pick of Burrows. Beau has established himself as the workhorse of a dominant San Diego pitching staff. Burrows has placed in the top 10 of innings pitched in each of the last 6 years, in the top 10 of ERA in 5 of the last 6 seasons, and top 3 in complete games in 4 of the last 5 seasons. To date, Burrows has posted a career record of 108-78 with a 3.22 ERA. At just 27 years of age, the Padres hope that Beau can anchor the starting rotation for many years to come. He enters the 2025 season rated 61/61.

Eric “Scandal” Confer, P – The former 3rd overall pick in the 2019 draft has developed into one of the premier pitchers in the MLB. In just his second full year with the team, Confer earned an astounding 21-2 record with a 2.52 ERA, earning him the 2023 Pitcher of the Year award. Confer followed this outstanding year with another fantastic season, posting a 16-8 record and 2.34 ERA, finishing 3rd in the 2024 Pitcher of the Year voting. Confer enters his 5th professional season as the team’s ace, and is rated 67/67.

Robbie Erlin, P – At 34 years of age, Erlin is the old man of the Padres pitching staff. Over the last decade, Erlin has been a key fixture in San Diego’s rotation. However, in recent years, Erlin has found himself undergoing a John Smoltz-esque reinventing process, as he has begun to split time between the starting rotation and the pen. Erlin is a solid and occasionally great pitcher. Consistency is his greatest strength, and whether he’s at the back end of the rotation or coming in for relief, he remains a key figure in San Diego’s success. The veteran enters the season rated 51/51.

Bryan Hoeing, P – Have I mentioned how amazing the 2015 draft was for the Padres? Hoeing was yet another 1st round draft pick from that class (3rd overall), and the Padres have reaped the benefits from that selection. In his rookie season, Hoeing managed an impressive 21-7 record with a 2.69 ERA, earning him the 2019 Rookie of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards. There was no sophomore slump for Bryan as he posted an 18-3 record and 2.35 ERA, earning him his second Pitcher of the Year award in 2020. In 2023, Hoeing managed a ridiculous 1.98 ERA, earning a record of 16-4. However, his third Pitcher of the Year award eluded him as he finished second in voting – losing out to teammate Eric Confer. The Padres are hoping for another great season as Hoeing sits in the middle of the rotation. He enters the season rated 58/58.

Matt “Barber” Laval, P – The 2nd overall pick of the 2019 draft has developed into yet another premier pitcher for the Padres. Laval worried some early in his professional career, as he posted ERAs of 3.99 and 4.54 in his first 2 seasons of being on the Padres full-time. Many were worried that he wouldn’t live up to all that potential that he possessed. But patience has paid off for the Padres. After a shaky first couple of seasons, Laval has dominated over the last two years. In 2024 he posted a record of 18-5, with an astounding 1.90 ERA, earning him the Pitcher of the Year Award. Sadly, not all of the news for Laval is good. On Halloween, Matt tore his flexor tendon and is expected to miss 5-6 months. Can Laval bounce back from this injury and continue his dominant form of 2024? Or will this elbow injury continue to nag him and hamper his career? When Laval does finally enter the season, he’ll be rated 72/72.

Brendan Rodgers has turned out to be an absolute stud in my league also- a six-time all-star in this universe as well, and the heart and soul of the Portland Beavers franchise.

Oh nice! Yea, he's been great for me. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about his contract situation though. He's asking for $28 million Most of my money is tied up in my pitching staff, and they're the biggest reason why I'm winning. But Rodgers is the biggest threat in my lineup, and he's the most consistent offensive player that I have. Decisions, decisions...

Offseason Center - Jan. 2025

The Padres offer minor league extensions to 61 players. 3B Brendan Rodgers and SP Bryan Hoeing remain the team’s biggest possible free agents. Reports indicate that Rodgers is looking for a contract in the range of $28 million, while Hoeing has been rumored to be asking for $26 million.

MLB Breaking News: Rule Change Announced

01/31/2025

League officials have just announced that the minimum service time required to be arbitration eligible has been increased to 4 years. This ensures a longer period which teams can pay their young players the minimum salary, resulting in better payroll flexibility.

----------------------------------------------------

When asked for a comment, San Diego GM Syrio Forel seemed quite pleased with the league's decision. “This rule change certainly works in our favor. I think in the long run that this move will be good for baseball. It allows small market clubs like ours to hold onto our young talent for longer and for cheaper, which potentially gives us the ability to continue to compete with the big boys.”

The Padres have remained tight-lipped about how the recent rule change has affected their finances, but early indications are that their budget for extensions has increased to somewhere in the range of $42 million.

Spring Training 2025

The Padres finished spring training with a record of 20-8 – 5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. 1B Joey Savin lead the team in BA with an impressive .371. The 27 year old has struggled to produce at the big league level, but might be poised for a breakout year. Veteran pitcher Robbie Erlin led the team in wins with 4, and posted a 1.35 ERA. 24 year old MR Dave Ling led the team in ERA at .77 over 15 games.

Experts seem to favor the Padres, predicting them to finish 1st in the division with a record of 100-62.

April 2025

1B Joey Savin was placed on waivers and claimed by the Angels. The Padres’ 1st round pick in the 2016 draft performed well in AAA, but failed to produce at the big league level.

The Padres opened the season rather disappointingly, quickly falling 6 games back. However they ended the month of April with a 6 game winning streak – climbing back above .500 and into 2nd place. They enter May five games behind the Dodgers, who have posted an impressive 16-5 record to open the season.

San Diego Padre Chris McKinney earned himself a player of the week award by hitting .502 (13-25).

May 2025

5/7/2025

The Padres traded 28 year old SP Christifer Andritsos, 27 year old CL Charles King, 25 year old 2B Len Pittman, 23 year old LF Rob Dann, and 35 year old SS Stephen Carmon, along with several draft picks to the Jacksonville Falcons for their 1st round draft pick.

Both teams seemed happy with the details of the transaction. The Falcons (A recent expansion team) are looking to build their franchise and have acquired to two proven and very well rated big leaguers in Andritsos and King. They also add to their minor league system with prospects Pittman and Dann. Not to mention the several draft picks that they picked up in this trade.

Meanwhile, rumor has it that the Padres were looking to free up cap space in order to offer extensions to certain players. GM Syrio Forel looks to bolster the club’s minor league system with the acquisition of Jacksonville’s 1st round pick. Fans were displeased at the loss of Andritsos, but Forel hopes that upcoming news may bring them back into good spirits.

5/14/2025

Star SP Bryan Hoeing has signed an 8 year, $91 million extension with the Padres. While the team remains a small market franchise with penny-pinching ownership, Syrio Forel is determined to send a message to his players – If you play well and are loyal to the club, he’ll find ways to treat you right. Rumor has it that this is not the only big deal that’s on the plate for the Padres. There could be another major extension announced in a few days.

5/19/2025

Fan favorite 3B Brendan Rodgers has agreed to an 8 year, $257 million extension. Rodgers leads the team in hits and stolen bases, and his .291 BA ranks 2nd on the roster. The 27 year old is also closing in on 1500 hits for his career. Over the years, Rodgers has been the Padres’ most consistent offensive threat, and GM Forel believes that this new extension is a justified reward. It looks like Rodgers will be anchoring the Padres’ lineup for years to come.

5/25/2025

RHP Randy Tanton has struggled this season and today we may have found out why. Tanton was seen grabbing his shoulder following a pitch in the dirt and was taken out of the game versus Houston after 1.2 innings of work. Scans came back negative for any sort of tears, but they did reveal severe inflammation in his right shoulder. Early indications suggest that Tanton will be out 4-5 months while undergoing treatment to reduce the inflammation. So far this season, Tanton has blown 5 saves and has posted a 5.95 ERA. The Padres are hoping that Randy can get the rest that he needs and can regain his 2024 form (2.33 ERA, 41/46 Saves).

5/28/2025

CF Brad Sutherland tore a ligament in his thumb during a diving catch versus the Reds. He is expected to miss 4 weeks while he recovers. This is a massive blow to the Padres’ lineup as Sutherland is having the breakout year that GM Forel was hoping for. He leads the team in nearly every offensive category, and leads the NL in slugging, OPS, WAR, home runs, runs, extra base hits, and total bases. Syrio Forel seemed relieved at his press conference when the news broke that Sutherland would only miss 4 weeks, as he seemed to be in an awful amount of pain as he walked off the field. Although this injury could have been far worse, the Padres will surely miss Sutherland while he is recovering.

The latest injury news has raised doubts about Brad’s durability. While it is hard to fault a player for getting injured during a stellar defensive effort, that fact remains that this isn’t his first stint on the DL. Sutherland spent nearly two-thirds of last season on the DL, and fans and ownership are hoping that we aren't seeing a repeat of that trend.

5/30/2025

Players often see their numbers slip after signing big contracts, and Brendan Rodgers seems to be no different. However, there may have been a very legitimate reason for his decreasing output. Rodgers was taken off the field late in the game versus the Reds after feeling a sharp pain jolt through his arm following a throw. GM Syrio Forel issued a statement confirming that the injury has been diagnosed as bicep tendonitis and that the star 3B would be out 5-6 weeks. Forel was hesitant to blame Rodgers’ recent slump on this injury, but he did comment that it was something that has most likely been building up and that it is possible that it’s been affecting his performance.

Monthly Review

The team went 19-8 in the month of May, bringing their season record to 30-18. The Padres are in 2nd place in the West, just a game and a half behind the Dodgers. The team currently ranks 1st in the NL in slugging, home runs, and strikeouts, and 2nd in BA, OPS, and runs. The pitching staff hasn’t retained their 2024 form and has proven at times to be vulnerable. Overall, the staff’s numbers are solid as they rank 1st in the NL in hits allowed, and opponent’s BA. The starters rank 2nd in ERA, and the staff ranks 3rd in ERA and runs allowed. However, the bullpen has struggled this season, posting an ERA of 4.29 – 13th in the NL.

2025 Draft

Having traded for an additional 1st round draft pick, The San Diego Padres picked 17 year old SS Alfredo “Seeker” Miranda and 20 year old CL Jorge “Booger” Marroquin in the 1st round. Miranda projects to be one of the few superstar prospects in an otherwise underwhelming draft class.

The Padres trade 3B Ryan Mountcastle, LF Jamie Quinn, SP Guo-feng Liang, SP Henry Ryan, and a selection of draft picks to the Washington Nationals. In return, San Diego will receive a 2nd and 3rd round draft pick. Mountcastle and Quinn were both set to receive arbitration later this year, so the move grants San Diego a little more flexibility with their financial situation. Meanwhile, The Nationals address weaknesses at third base and left field.

Monthly Review

The Padres went 13-14 in the month of June, bringing their overall record to 43-32. The team sits in 2nd place in the West, 4 games behind the Dodgers. CF Brad Sutherland continues to dominate the offensive leader boards for the Padres, with a line of .308/.376/.621. Other notable offensive contributors include 1B Elroy Lachance (.303/.364/.431) and SS Chris McKinney (.295/.342/.437). The pitching staff has struggled to find their dominant form of last season. Beau Burrows, Eric Confer, and Robbie Erlin have all pitched well thus far, but the staff as a whole has not lived up to its promised potential.

Monthly Awards

Top Batter – Sergio Garcia (.294 BA, 11 HR, 22 RBI, 18 R), White Sox

The Padres sign SS Chris McKinney to a 5 year, $48.5 million extension. So far this season the 26 year old is hitting .303 with 9 HR and 22 RBI, and has scored 41 times. Since entering the league in 2020, McKinney has grown as a player and his stats have improved every year. Now entering his prime, the Padres have locked him up with the hopes that he will contribute for years to come.

7/14/2025

The All-Star teams have been announced! SP Eric Confer (12-4, 2.48 ERA), C Jose Rodriguez (.278/.396/.485), SS Chris McKinney (.301/.350/.458), and CF Brad Sutherland (.291/.358/.570) have been selected to represent the Padres! Former Padre CF Brad Zimmer, now on the Rangers, was also selected.

7/31/2025

With the trading deadline looming, the Padres sit in 2nd place in the West, 6 ˝ game behind the Dodgers. San Diego currently sits in the top spot for the Wild Card – 2 games ahead of the Phillies, and 4 games ahead of the Braves. Going into this season, San Diego was picked as one of the favorites to win it all, and while the team has played rather well, they have yet to exhibit the dominance that they’ve shown in years past. With the trade deadline creeping ever closer, will the Padres make a move to solidify their spot in the post season? Or does the front office believe that the current roster can get the job done? Whatever the case, all eyes now fall on GM Syrio Forel.

Monthly Awards

AL:

Top Batter – James Robbins (.315 BA, 7 HR, 24 RBI, 20 R), White Sox
Top Pitcher – Tony Cingrani (6-0, 42 K, 1.84 ERA), White Sox

Top Pitcher – Anthony Molina (4-1, 28 K, 1.35 ERA), Pirates
Rookie – Ivan Pena (.309 BA, 9 HR, 15 RBI, 18 R), Giants

2025 Trading Deadline

Throughout his career as the Padres’ GM, Syrio Forel has always looked to the future when making transactions. However, with the recent success of the franchise, expectations are higher than ever before. Forel now finds himself in unknown territory as he must work in the confines of a “win now” mentality. As such, the Padres have made two massive moves just hours before the deadline.

In their first trade, the Padres sent 25 year old C Jose Politti, 25 year old 1B Luis Morales (Former 1st round draft pick in 2019), 23 year old 2B Ivan Dominguez (1st overall pick in the 2020 draft), 22 year old Kazuhiko Hasegawa (2nd round draft pick in 2021), 22 year old SP Ruben Lerma, and a 2nd round draft pick (Among other picks) to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In exchange, the Padres received 26 year old 3B Adrian Martinez and $2 million in cash.

In their second deal, the Padres sent 30 year old 3B Dustin Peterson, 23 year old CF Pepe Flores (3rd round pick in 2022), 26 year old LF Rich Lefevre (1st round draft pick in 2018), and a 3rd, 4th, and 5th round draft pick to the Yankees. In return, the Padres got 23 year old RF Bernardo Orosco, who is expected to play in left field for the club.

Many thought that Forel would look to strengthen the club’s pitching staff, but he opted for offensive talent instead. The staff has pitched well in recent weeks, so it’s possible that Forel believes that they are finding their mid-season form and can keep the team in games. The Padres’ new batting order will look like:

Bernardo Orosco LF (.336/.402/.462)
Chris McKinney 2B (.288/.343/.435)
Jose Rodriguez C (.270/.390/.492)
Adrian Martinez 3B (.307/.370/.537)
Brad Sutherland CF (.303/.374/.577)
Brendan Rodgers SS (.276/.332/.432)
Elroy Lechance 1B (.296/.356/.432)
Tim Elmore RF (.251/.297/.393)

CF Brad Sutherland was taken out of the game versus the Rockies earlier today after feeling pain in his shoulder following a throw. Reports suggest that the injury is just a strain, but he is expected to miss up to 4 weeks. This is Sutherland’s second stint on the DL this season and adds to his already concerning history of injury.

Recently acquired LF Bernardo Orosco strained a muscle in his rib cage while running the bases in today’s game against the Cubs. The 23 year old expressed his frustration at the injury in great length following the game, and vows to return to the club as soon as the doctors clear him. Unfortunately, early reports suggest that Orosco may be sidelined for a minimum of 2 weeks.

SS Brendan Rodgers left today’s game against the Dodgers after colliding with another player. Word has come from the front office that the collision resulted in a torn thumb ligament. Rodgers is the latest victim of a string of injuries for the Padres, and is expected to miss at least 5 weeks. The normally durable Rodgers missed 6 weeks earlier in the season with biceps tendinitis.

In other news, it was revealed today that 3B Adrian Martinez was selected as this week’s Best Player for the NL! The 26 year old dominated at the plate, hitting .577 with 2 HR and 6 RBIs over the course of the week.

Monthly Review

The Padres went 18-10 this month, closing the gap between them and the Dodgers to 2 games. The team sits comfortably in the top spot for the Wild Card with a record of 76-54, but simply making it into the playoffs won’t be enough for this club. Unfortunately, just getting into the playoffs may be what the team needs to hope for as starters Sutherland, Orosco, and Rodgers all fell victim to injuries and have landed on the DL.
