2013 MLB Redraft League

2013 Redraft:

Since the 2014 MLB season was not very kind to my Red Sox team (really, last place...?), I decided to fire up OOTP 2014 and give the 2013 season a try. Instead of just selecting Boston and playing with existing rosters, I decided to set up a "redraft" league where every player is fair game.

Details: I will play as the Boston Red Sox. Since it is my game/my MLB world, I get the #1 draft choice. Hello Mr. Trout! I will play with most settings at default, with some minor changes. I will sim the games in short intervals, making lineup changes as needed. I am playing with a max limit of $100,000,000 for overall team salary during the draft. I am letting the game decide the player salaries, so this should limit who I can select. I will use "stars" on a 1-10 rating system. Since I tend to get carried away with trades in most of my other leagues, I will limit myself to only two (2) major trades per season. I will fill in any other details as I think of them.

***Edit -> After playing for a few months of game time, I realized that a few other minor tweaks/ground rules were needed. First, the draft would be cut from 30 rounds to 15 rounds. Next, I would limit the number of foreign players that my scout would find each year. Lastly, any team I control cannot have the #1 pick in back to back years, no matter how bad I played.

Not too bad - I think I can meet Mr. Henry's expectation for the 2013 MLB season. My goal is to be in the playoff hunt come mid-September.

2013 Boston Red Sox

I think the team turned out alright. I had to take Trout with the first pick. After that, I just focused on defense and pitching. Because of the $$$ limit of the setup, I stayed clear of the high priced players. The only exception to that was taking Teixeira, since I really needed some pop with the bat.

I drafted the first 25 rounds and then let the computer take over. The computer stuck me with some players that I would not have taken, at a higher price than I wanted, and in positions that I thought I was already solid at. Let's just say that I have more than enough bullpen help right now! Oh well....

Good catch! In my haste to get this setup, I got my posts out of order ("put the cart before the horse"). Needless to say, I think the team will be solid and I should be able to meet the owner's expectation. Thanks for following along.

Here are the preseason predictions:

League Top Prospects:

Here is a list of the top 10 rookies and where they ended up. As you can see, the Angels and the Indians did well in the draft.

League Opening Day

Opening Day of the 2013 MLB season is here. Despite having A-Rod and Pujols, the Astros could not pull out the win. Great start to the season by Matt Kemp - Texas could be a real tough team this year.

Game 1: Boston v. New York
Record 1-0, First Place

Nice to come out of the gate with a win over the Yankees. David Price (game score of 43) somehow out pitched Darvish (game score of 53 with 11 k's). Trout and Bernadina added a little pop to the lineup, going a combined 5 for 8 with 2 Hr's and 2 doubles. My 19 million dollar per year player (Teixeria) went 0-4 with 3 K's. Mo Rivera, which the computer drafted for me, was selected to close for the team and is off to a good start.

Game 2: Boston v. New York
Record 2-0, First Place

Another tough outing by my starter, but another nice showing by the bullpen. Anderson lasted into the 6th inning, but gave up 5 runs on 11 hits (game score of 35). Thankfully Peavy was equally rusty, going 4 1/3 innings with 5 runs on 5 hits (game score of 37).

The Boston bullpen trio of Bell, Kimbrel, and Rivera respectfully earned the win, hold, and save in the victory. The Boston hitting attack was led by Cody Ross, with a 2 for 3 day and 3 rbi.

Game 3: Boston v. New York
Record 2-1, Second Place

New York bounced back to take a game from Boston. Boston got a respectable outing from Matt Harvey (8 innings, 4 runs on 6 hits, with a 59 game score), but was matched by Yankee hurler Gavin Floyd who went 8 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits, striking out 8, and a game score of 56.

Boston got solo shots from Trout and Kendrick, and a 2 for 4 day from Teixeira. While Jeter (2 for 4) and McLouth (3 for 4) led the New York offensive attack, it was David Ross' solo shot off of Rivera in the 9th inning that proved to be the difference.

April 2013: 16 Wins - 11 Losses

Tied for 1st Place

In an effort to speed things up (and hopefully keep me more involved in the league), I am going to present a monthly recap.

April was good for Boston, with the team going 16-11 on the month -- good enough for a tie with Baltimore. New York is 3 1/2 back, Toronto 4 back, and Tampa 8 games back with an American League worse 8-19 record.

Offensively, Boston was led by Teixeira (35 for 105, with 13 doubles, 5 Hr's, and 21 RBI) and Cabrera (33 for 103, with 8 doubles, 6 HR's, and 25 RBI) who both had an outstanding month. On the mound, Boston was led by Matt Harvey (3 Wins 1 Loss, 3.09 ERA), followed by Price and Anderson. The ageless one (Mariano Rivera) was solid in the closer role, picking up 2 wins and 4 saves.

During the month, both Teixeira (.450 batting average with 4 HR's and 7 RBI) and Ross (.455 batting average with 2 HR's and 10 RBI) picked up player of the week awards. Overall, a very solid start to the year!

The Marlins looked great in April, with a record of 17-10, good enough to lead the NL East. I really like the team that Miami drafted. The pitching staff is led by Lester (3-2, 2.79 ERA) and Lee (5-1, 2.84 ERA). The likes of Posey, Utley, & Headley are off to a nice offensive start, and I fully expect Victorino and Cain to bounce back.

May 2013: 14 Wins - 16 Losses

Overall Record 30 - 27, Tied for 2nd Place

A losing record for the month dropped Boston into a second place tie with the Yankees, while Baltimore maintained a 2 game lead in the AL East. Offensively, Boston was led by Howie Kendrick's .352 batting average (37 for 105), 11 doubles, 16 runs, 4 HR's, 17 RBI, and a .983 OPS. Close behind was Roger Bernadina who hit .381 (37 for 97), 7 doubles, 17 runs, 2 HR's, and 13 RBI. It was a rough month for Trout (.244 average, .694 OPS) and Teixeira (.234 average, .794 OPS).

On the mound, Boston was led by Matt Harvey (5 - 2, 2.56 ERA) and Brett Anderson (4 - 1, 3.23 ERA). On the down side, the other three starters were a combined 4 - 9 on the month, with Price posting a 2 - 3 record, 5.18 ERA, Gee at 1 - 3, 6.40 ERA, and Harden at 1 - 3, 6.67 ERA. Ouch!

During the month, Kendrick picked up a player of the week award (.500 batting average (15 for 30) with 1 HR and 4 RBI).

Breaking News ***TRADE***

Well, I pulled the trigger and used up one of my two "calendar year" trades. Say hello to Madison Bumgarner!

While I admit that I may have overacted, I did not want to take a chance that I would have a repeat month of questionable pitching. In order to pick up Bumgarner from the Indians, Boston had to part with its starting shortstop (Asdrubal Cabrera - 4 stars), number 4 starter (Dillon Gee - 2 1/2 stars), number 5 starter (Rich Harden - 1 1/2 star), setup man (Josh Edgin - 4 1/2 star), prospect Hunter Renfroe (3 1/2 star potential), and four (4) draft picks.

While I think that the computer forced me to give up a lot more than I would have liked, Boston did get a potential ace in return. In the two starts that he was able to make for the Red Sox, Bumgarner went 2 - 0 with a 1.20 ERA. Hopefully this does not backfire on me.
