Operation SWORDFISH--Dynasty of the Marlins

Good morning, RJL518. This baseball team is known as the Miami Marlins. They began play in 1993 and have won two world series championships in 1997 and 2003.

However, since the last time they won the title, the Marlins have been floundering in mediocrity and below average fan support. Even a brand new baseball stadium, Marlins Park, that opened up in 2012 isn't enough to bring in the fans to fill up the seats.

The fans are complaining and doubting the integrity of the team because all current ownership does is bring up young prospects from an excellent farm system, mold them into All-Star players and then sell them off at very cheap prices which translates into weak products on the field.

Marlins fans have had enough with the penny-pinching ways of the front office and are demanding a change!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to take the Miami Marlins starting in the current year of 2014 and take them far into the future winning Pennants and World Series championships which will bring the fans back to Marlins Park and make the Miami Marlins a household name in the world of baseball once again!

As always should you or any of your coaching staff that you hire to manage this franchise be fired or run out on a rail in South Florida, the Commissioner of OOTP Baseball will disavow any knowlege of your actions. Matter of fact, he will say he never knew you or that you even existed citing plausible denialbility as an excuse!!

This thread will self-destruct in five seconds...or if you don't take the job.

Good Luck, RJL518!!!, Pretty sure you're gonna NEED it!!

Codename: Operation SWORDFISH!!!

Yeah, I'm gonna NEED it alright!

MISSION ACCEPTED!!! I'm taking over the Miami Marlins!!

COMING SOON:

Well...i have a dynasty that starts in 1901 with my expanded playoffs and its going full swing. My Meet the Mets dynasty is in 1963 and its also doing well. I am having lots of fun with both dynastys. I do want to thank all of you great OOTP players especially NYY#23, George_Bell, CHOWDERHEAD, and catknight. Their dynasty reports are IMO the best you will find in this forum. So..modeling on their success, i decided to try out my own dynastys. I created a dynasty in the deep past, and started one in the recent past.

So now, i decided to start a dynasty in the current year. Now i live in south florida, my friends. I love my Dolphins(although they don't love ME), the Hurricanes(although we cant fill the stadium anymore, trust me), Mets(since i was born in Queens, NY), Heat(two championships with Lebron, hey, i'll take it), Panthers(although no one really cares about hockey down here), and of course the Marlins(believe me, it's not easy to be a south florida sports fan these days).

I will start this season in 2014 with the current rosters and pretty much regular default settings on ootp except for a few SMALL changes. I was undecided on how to progress this league. Just playing out a current dynasty didnt seem exciting enough until i got that strange recording that you guys read up above.

Now the Marlins team really isnt that bad. I have good starting talent with the likes of Jose Fernandez, Giancarlo Stanton, Hechaverria, Saltalamacchia, and a pretty good host of others. But, in order for me to succeed in Operation: Swordfish, i felt i had do something special. I built a Baseball TIME MACHINE!!!

At around Draft time, this time machine will automatically bring forward baseball rookies dating back all the way to 1871 to today. Now, maybe that might give me an unfair advantage because i know who these players used to be and what they will probably become. However, no guarantee because OOTP sometimes likes to be SLICK!!! You other dynasty veterans KNOW what i'm talking about.

Now the message i received said for me to turn the Marlins back into champions...but it didn't say HOW for me to do it. So, I figured i can do it any way i want to, just as long as i do it. It also didnt give me a time frame, so im guessing i have MANY years to accomplish this mission.

I'm going to use the current MLB structure, minors and the like. I have also set up the minors with the new affiliations that were released not long ago. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...es-2015-a.html.

My new playoff system is in effect as well. SIX teams from each league will make the playoff. The top three teams in each division, no wildcard. The division winner with the worst record will play a best of three against the lowest seeded 2nd place division winner. The other two second place teams will play each other. Then of course you will have your division series, champ series, and world series. I really wanted a better playoff customization, but gonna have to wait for OOTP16 hopefully.

Well, i better get to setting up my time machine so that i can get those players. Hmmmm...Babe Ruth on the Marlins. World Series, here we come!!! (i hope)

Pre-Dynasty/2014 Pre-Season

3/14:

Well, i'm not sure that the TIME MACHINE is going to work yet, but anyway, i am starting with the 2014 rosters as planned. I made a few changes in the off season by signing Kendrys Morales, since i needed some 1B help, and i actually talked him down 2 million less than what he wanted, and i traded away Josh Rodrigues, who my scout said will never really be a big leaguer for Joakim Soria. One rule i have followed most of my baseball career, you can NEVER have too much bullpen!

So i think my team is ready to go for the 2014 season. I will actively manage 5 games a month, the rest will be simmed. So that means out of 162 games, i will have control of at least 30 games a year. I will of course manage ALL playoff games that we are involved in, assuming of course we get there at all. I'll try to keep track of the games i manage, wins, losses and the like. I want to see if I am a hubris or nemesis to my team. Of course, for some reason, when i manage a game, i think OOTP has a subroutine that activates to CHEAT me out of a win. All you other OOTP GMs, KNOW what i am talking about!

Well, Operation Swordfish is AGO!! April 2014 is right around the corner. Hope i get off to a good start!

I lived in South Florida for about 10 years so I always had a soft spot for the Marlins, although never liked how they ran their team.

So I wish you luck, and hope you'll promise not to sell off the team after you win your first World Series!

That's good to hear. I've got faith, and I like your signing of Morales. Hopefully he'll do as well for the Marlins as he's done for me!

Nice! Between this and your Mets thread, you will keep me busy following along.

Very nice pick up with Soria. That is one player that always seems to turn out very well in my sims.

Not really a good thing that the name of this dynasty is Operation Swordfish, because after the month of April, i felt like falling on my own sword! This was one of the worst starting months i have ever had playing any version of OOTP starting a current year game! A 9 game losing streak to start the year and i was 2-3 with the games i managed. Jose Fernandez got off to a horrible start, he usually doesnt start that bad and even Stanton couldnt get out of the gate fast enough. Lost Jeff Baker to injury for a couple months and now Dunn just went down...dont know how long he will be out! So i start the year 8-19..11GB out of 1st and 10 GB out of 2nd. Thankfully, there are 162 games in a season, i have a while to turn this around.

I made a few moves in April. I signed Wandy Rodrigues to a one-year deal for some extra starting pitching help for about 800,000. Jake Marisnick i promoted to the majors when Baker went down and i think he will be fun to watch in the coming months. Tom Koehler i demoted to the Zephyrs, when i got Rodriguez, but i really didnt have a place for him on the main roster, so i traded Koehler to the Twins for Trevor Plouffe, who has good ratings, who is in his prime and he would be a better choice at 3B than McGehee, who i sent down to New Orleans. After April, these guys should be able to help me...no where to go but up after that lousy month!

(RJL518 walks back to the time machine and turns a couple of dials...a spark then nothing)

(to himself) I knew i should have turned that dial to the left...now i have to rewire the darn thing.

May 2014

May 2014

The month of May went a lot better than April and so we finish the month 10 games under .500. I had to make a few transactions during the month, however. I claimed Brandon League off waivers from the LAD and he will give my bullpen some much needed depth. I lost Cosart for the rest of the year, so i brought up Flynn and Conley. Conley was a call up because i had to send Henderson Alvarez back to New Orleans. He was 2-8 and his ERA was over 6.00. He needs some re-training!

We are still at or near the bottom of all categories in the NL and even though the month started well...i ended it with 5 straight losses. I was 4-1 in the games i managed this month, so improved my managerial record for 2014. But then i lost Plouffe for two weeks and thats when the team started sliding. The Draft Pool was announced and the time machine is still not ready yet, i will be drafting tomorrow's superstars.

Well back to the drawing board. See you after June.

(RJL518 walks back over to the time machine and starts flicking switches.)

to himself: "Now, i wonder what would happen if i push tab A into slot B...hmmmmm"

Looks like Washington and Atlanta had your number in May. A good June will get you in the thick of the NL East though.

That actually makes sense because the 2014 draft was pre-populated.

2014-June

2014-June

Another great month as the Marlins get back a lot of games to finish July only 3 games under .500 and are 1.5 GB of the Phillies for the 2nd spot in the NL East. Jose Fernandez seems to have settled down and his now back to his winning ways. Claimed Dustin McGowan off of waivers to help bolster the starting lineup. He's off to a slow start but i think he will catch up in a little while. Valdespin is turning out to be a fine lead-off hitter...that was a nice pickup. The team is improving, but still have a long way to go. Now if only i can get that time machine to work.

(RJL518 gets up from the computer and walks over to the time machine. He opens up the door and a puff of smoke hits him in the face and now his face is all black.)

"Damn! Now I have to go take a shower!"

2014-July

07-14:

An 11-15 month of July kind of drained me on the season and i fell to 7 games under.500. The good news for the Marlins is that the rest of the division sucks!..We are only 1.5 games out of second which will get us in the playoffs. I lost Joakim Soria for the year so I had to make a few call ups.

On the positive side, Giancarlo Stanton made the NL All-Stars. Very proud of him. He is one of the best players in baseball. Have to re-sign him. I made a deal with the Phillies for some players in my farm system that were ready for the majors, but i really didnt have any space for them, so i grabbed Casey Janssen for Alvarez, who i really didnt like anyway, and two others. A three for one is usually frowned upon, but i did like Janssen who would shore up my bullpen. McGowan i waived so that i could make room for him. Dustin wasnt doing it, so it looks like that move was a bit of a bust.

Janssen should be a nice addition to the bullpen for you. Now, get out there and make the playoffs!
