Arizona Diamondbacks Dynasty

As an independent project for school, I've elected to start an Arizona Diamondbacks dynasty and write about it on these wonderful forums

Basically, my goal is to re-tool the Arizona Diamondbacks and build them into a powerhouse for years to come by making smart and efficient moves.

Since I plan on making this a very good thread and dynasty, I ordered hosting for my leagues HTML reports so you guys can follow along with the whole league while I write about the Diamondbacks.

2014 Season Preview

Arizona Brings in New General Manager to Right the Ship

Following back-to-back 81-81 seasons, Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick has decided it is time to bring in someone to right the ship and set the organization in a firm direction for the future. The man Kendrick chose for the job was Charlie Cooper, a young and ambitious GM.

At the press conference announcing the addition, Cooper was quoted saying;

"We're at a fork in the road…we have some good talent, but we also have some bad contracts that are eating up the necessary budget room needed to contend now and in the near future too. The goal for 2014 is to try and shed the bad contracts without having to give up too much talent in the process. We plan on trying to remain competitive, but making the playoffs might be too much to ask of us at the moment. "

Cooper also said he plans on making smart and efficient moves to make the Diamondbacks relevant again in the future. For the time being though, Cooper doesn't plan on making any headline moves until he gets his feet under him and specifically breaks down what needs to be done to help this team win.

For now, the 2014 Opening Day roster looks like this;

2014 Draft Pool Revealed!

2014 Draft Pool Preview

ML News: Draft Pool Revealed: For the entrants in this year's rookie draft, released today by the league, the possibilities are endless. Some will immediately seize their opportunity to play in the bigs with a venom, doggedly working their way up through the system to arrive on the pro circuit in three to five years, if they are lucky. Others will struggle, have their hopes dashed, reborn and dashed again, all the while not fully giving up on the dream. Still others will take each day as it comes, while not losing sight of the end-game. They will figure it out, quietly work their way into the professional ranks and have solid, if not spectacular careers in Major League. At any rate, teams now can scout the draft pool for the next 30 days.

The top players available seem to be:
1. Brady Aiken, 17 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
2. Tyler Kolek, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
3. Carlos Rodon, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
4. Kyle Schwarber, 21 year-old catcher out of college.
5. Nick Gordon, 18 year-old shortstop out of high-school.
6. Alex Jackson, 18 year-old catcher out of high-school.
7. Aaron Nola, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
8. Kyle Freeland, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
9. Jeff Hoffman, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
10. Michael Conforto, 21 year-old right fielder out of college.

With the 15th pick in the draft, it's unlikely that the D'Backs will get any of the premium talent listed above, but they should still land a decent prospect with the pick.

2014 Amateur Draft Analysis

First Ten Picks
Round 1, Pick 1 - Houston Astros: CF Willie Stroker
Notes: Houston took it's third straight 1st overall pick and used it on the superstar outfielder Willie Stroker. A month ago, Stroker wasn't even regarded as a candidate to be taken 1st overall, but his stock flew up during his senior year. Stroker projects as a middle of the order type with great speed and defense. His rumored demand is $10.5M, which would easily be a record signing bonus for an amateur.

Round 1, Pick 2 - Miami Marlins: 1B A.J. Reed
Notes: The Fish decided to take the slugging first basemen out of Kentucky with their 2nd overall pick. With a bonus demand of roughly $7.5M, Reed is going to be a tough sign for the historically stingy Marlins. He has very good power and plays OK defense over at first base.

Round 1, Pick 3 - Chicago White Sox: CF Brad Zimmer
Notes: Zimmer is regarded as one of the best bats in the class and that's why the White Sox took him with the 3rd pick in the draft. At 6'5" Zimmer projects to hit for some good power and is never an easy out at the plate. In the field, he possess an above average arm and above average range. The White Sox were able to sign him for a $6.18M bonus.

Round 1, Pick 4 - Chicago Cubs: CF Michael Gettys
Notes: The Cubbies took the Gainesville, Ga native with their first selection in the draft. Even though he's extremely raw and is going to take a little time to develop, the Cubs are very pleased with the selection. The move follows in the footsteps of the Cubs previous years' selections of bats over arms.

Round 1, Pick 5 - Minnesota Twins: 1B Justin Bellinger
Notes: Another under the radar type prospect, Bellinger shot up teams lists with a monster senior year. His bat looks like it'll hold up in the big leagues after a couple years of seasoning in the minors. The Twins liken him to one of the former faces of the franchise, Justin Morneau.

Round 1, Pick 6 - Seattle Mariners: CF Ed Young
Notes: With a big hole in the outfield at the major league level, the Mariners decided to take the guy that they think is closest to the big leagues. Young possess' great speed and power, something that not very many guys can put together at the same time. Young signed for an above slot bonus of $6.6M.

Round 1, Pick 7 - Philadelphia Phillies: 3B Michael Chavis
Notes: With Chase Utley likely to be leaving the Phillies in the near future, GM Ruben Amaro decided it was time to find the other half of the double play combination to pair up with prospect JP Crawford. Chavis has good pop and profiles a lot like Utley, the only difference being that Utley came out of college and wasn't as raw.

Round 1, Pick 8 - New York Mets: CF Monte Harrison
Notes: A two-sport star in high school, Harrison is a super athlete and has superstar potential with his 5-tool capabilities. Harrison wanted to attend college, so the Mets had to go a little over slot and sign the stud for $3.28M

Round 1, Pick 9 - Toronto Blue Jays: C Aramis Garcia
Notes: The first catcher selected in this years draft, Garcia was a little bit of a surprise pick. Unranked when the original rankings came out a month ago, Garcia figured to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, but Toronto had a glaring need behind the plate and Garcia has the quickest path to the majors. A good receiver and game caller, Blue Jays fan a very excited for his arrival in a couple years.

Round 1, Pick 10 - Colorado Rockies: C Alex Jackson
Notes: Probably the best high school bat in the class, Jackson draws many comparisons to the Nationals Bryce Harper for his power. Like Harper, Jackson was a catcher in high school, but his future may lie in the outfield. By moving Jackson to the outfield, the Rockies will be able to get his bat to the majors faster and keep him healthier longer, as catchers bodies take a toll over the course of their careers.

First Drafted by Position
C: Aramis Garcia, Toronto Blue Jays (Round 1- Pick 9)
1B: AJ Reed, Miami Marlins (1 - 2)
2B: Gregory Deichmann, Washington Nationals (1 - 19)
3B: Michael Chavis, Philadelphia Phillies (1 - 7)
SS: Trea Turner, Texas Rangers (1 - 21)
LF: Gareth Morgan, Cleveland Indians (1 - 23)
CF: Willie Stroker, Houston Astros (1 - 1)
RF: Derek Fisher, Houston Astros (2 - 1)
SP: Carlos Rodon, Cincinnati Reds (1 -20)
MR: Touki Toussaint, Arizona Diamondbacks (1 - 15)
CL: Tim Williams, New York Yankees (1 - 17)

Last Player Selected
3B Joe Becht, Boston Red Sox

Late Season Analysis

Diamondbacks Set Eyes on Future as September Begins

Just like General Manager Charlie Cooper stated when he was hired, he planned on seeing things through before deciding which direction to take this team. It looks like he's seen enough and now he's beginning to make moves with an eye set on the future.

At the trade deadline Cooper made two trades; sending RF Gerardo Parra to Pittsburgh for pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow and sending LF Mark Trumbo to the Cardinals for MR Carlos Martinez. He turned two expensive players into two young, hard throwing arms. Glasnow and Martinez both profile as #3 starters at least, but could both easily be very successful in the bullpen. Both of their fastballs average a velocity of 96 MPH, which is way above average. Since his arrival in the desert, Martinez has struggled in the rotation with a 1-3 record and 5.72 ERA in 5 games started. Glasnow has picked it up right where he left off since coming into the Arizona organiation. At High A Visalia, Glasnow has compiled a 2-2 record with a 3.20 ERA and 49 K's in just 39 innings pitched.

Along with the acquisitions, Cooper has also promoted top prospects Archie Bradley and Chris Owings to the majors. Both have shown signs of why they're rated so highly, but both are still trying to put it all together at the big league level. A bit of a surprise to both the fans and front office officials, CF Ender Inciarte has caught on fire and tore up with month of August, winning the teams Player of the Month award.

Many fans are still scratching there heads from the amateur draft selections the team made. Four of the first five picks were starting pitchers and they've all struggled mightily in the minors so far.

SP Touki Toussaint - AZL (2-3, 5.28 ERA in 8 GS, 46 IP, 53 H, 40-24 K/BB)
SS Forrest Wall - MIS (278/358/407 in 276 PA, 16 XBH, 3 SB, 27-55 BB/K)
SP Brock Barger - AZL (4-5, 5.24 ERA in 12 GS, 67 IP, 74 H, 77-28 K/BB)
SP Brandon Murray - AZL (1-6, 5.68 ERA in 12 GS, 65 IP, 67 H, 57-22 K/BB)
SP Ned Willis - AZL (2-4, 5 SV, 8.66 ERA in 17.2 IP, 20 H, 24-11 K/BB)

With the amount of money spent on those five players, you'd expect results twice as good from what we've seen so far. They all came out of high school, so maybe they're still adjusting to professional baseball.

As the clock struck midnight, the active major league roster expanded from 25 to 40 players. General Manager Charlie Cooper said he expects to give quite a few young players extended looks this September. Among those being called up are MR Joe Paterson, MR Eury De la Rosa, MR Kevin Munson, SP Alex Sanabia, SS Nick Ahmed, LF Alfredo Marte, and MR Ian Kadish. The most intriguing player from that group seems to be Kadish, who Cooper signed to a minor league contract half way through the season. At AA Mobile, he's pitched to the tune of a 1.93 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 53.1 IP.

With Cooper giving the young guys a chance to play, it's probably going to be a rough month for the Diamondbacks, who currently own the 12th pick in the 2015 draft. Expect the Diamondbacks to land a slightly higher pick when the season wraps up later this month.

I see you set your Wild Card Round to best of 5. How long does it push your season? Into November?

I didn't set the wild card round to best of five, those were the single game scores from those games.

If I would make it best of five, it would definitely push things into early November every year.
