In the Shadow of the City: The 1946 Newark Black Sox

Almost as soon as Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945, the men who ran the National Association were sounding the horn for reorganization. The organization which administered to the two Major Leagues, the Continental League and American Association from 1903 to the outbreak of the War felt up to the challenge. The NA had steered the CL and AA through gambling crises and the Depression. Recovery from a four-year hiatus should be relatively easy.

Not all the faces were familiar. Financial difficulties during the war had forced some owners to sell the title to their clubs to men willing to bet on a quick return of baseball. Not all of these men would have passed muster if the National Association had to approve their purchases. These new owners had taken control of a few of the ‘poor sisters’ of the leagues (Newark and Royals of the CL and Cincinnati of the AA), hopefully ending the embarrassing parade player sales and financially lopsided trades. Wary as the old guard may have been of the new blood, they brought in plenty of new money and new ideas. Ideas which even the old guard could see having value in protecting the CL and AA Major League standing.

After agreeing to return to the Pre-War organization, two separate leagues and not a single ‘super league’, the CL and AA were ready to act.

All that remained of the lower minors were disused ballparks and memories. It was the high minors, the remnants of the International, Central and Western Leagues, posing a threat to form a rival Major League. The National Association used a three-pronged attack to eliminate any threat the high minors may have posed.

The Western League was the obvious league to lead a claim on Major League status. By Thanksgiving, the owners of the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Miners were formally invited to join the Continental League. The discussion turned from “Would the WL spearhead a third Major League” to “Would the WL even start the season?”

The American Association plucked two of the Central League’s key cities, Kansas City and Milwaukee, by simply signing leases on stadiums with owner and team to come.

The final nail came when the National Association began offering to subsidize teams and leagues trying to restart. Pointing to the financial success of the directly owned Triple A clubs in Denver, Montreal and Columbus, and promising the same from Florida to British Columbia won the NA many allies. The NA also worked to prevent many of the more independent minded minor league owners from restarting. The NA backed men were numerous enough throughout baseball that every NA recognized minor league was fully affiliated with the CL and AA.

As spring training approached there were plenty of questions to ask about the teams and the leagues: But right now, all that matters is Baseball is back!

New Beginnings

A New Beginning. Those words were becoming the unofficial motto of The National Association. New teams, new owners and new hope. Other than the Baltimore Baybirds being renamed the Bombers, owner Garrison Leitermann’s tribute to his son’s WWII service, the clubs seemed somewhat familiar. Same nicknames, same parks, personnel and players were back in the news, even though more than of few names were associated with unexpected places.

Fairly or not, reputations were still the same for many clubs. Leitermann of Baltimore and Astufillo owner of Brooklyn both were expected to spend whatever was necessary to keep their clubs on top. These men had reputations as winners, and nothing, not even a work stoppage and world war would keep them from going for the next title. On the other end of the spectrum were clubs like Buffalo, Cincinnati and St. Louis Royals, whose names were burdened with an underachieving past. Even though, in the case of Cincinnati, Royals and many other perennial losers, new owners were promising a new beginning.

No reputation held more of a burden than the Newark Black Sox. Of the 20 ‘original’ clubs, Newark was the only one without a pennant in the 1903-1941 era. Back to back 3rd place finishes in the teens being the franchise’s high-water mark.

If the Black Sox had been excluded from the reorganized National Association, few would have questioned it and even fewer would have cared. The cynical minded sportswriters felt Newark’s inclusion was not a result of “the desire to honor the National Association membership and fandoms of 1941,” as the press releases stated. Newark was included, speculated the wags, to honor the cash new Newark owner Niel Rougier brought to the table.

Of course, having an owner who says he will spend the money and have the patience to not let a tough 1946 derail any long term goals is one thing. If the losses start to pile up, and the park gets more and more empty and the local paper has more about the Bears, Blue Sox and Nationals, well, that might be a different story.

Nuts ‘n bolts

I’ve become a sit back and watch the world go by kind of player with OOTP. I’ve been wanting to have a day to day team focused dynasty. My attempts with historical players never really grabbed me, so I’ve decided to give a fictional universe a spin.

I don’t know why, but I picked the tiny market, cash poor Newark Black Sox to start with. This is probably a mistake if I’m trying to build a dynasty. I’m really worried about my ability to work with a budget and build a pitching staff.

Since I’m ‘new’ at competing with AI I am going with the 1-100 scale for ratings. Full coaching and scouting on.

Anything I write about Pre-WWII baseball in this thread is completely made up.

Universe set up is as follows:

The National Association is comprised of 2-Twelve team leagues, the Continental League and American Association, in 2 divisions. I’m using the 1969 MLB schedule to have a 162 game season with some doubleheaders. Using the ‘out of the box’ 1946 factors. I did do some futzing with the financials for each club, because everyone was broke. Now, most everyone has at least enough to offer some extensions. Financials on, 4 years TNA service time for Free Agency and 3 years’ service for Minor League Free Agency. No Arbitration. 10/5 rule is disabled. 25 man rosters, can expand to 40 on September 1. August 31 is the trading deadline.

Code:

Each National Association club has an affiliate at each level of minors, with the 8 clubs with the largest market (as determined by darkhorse’s market calculator) having a second R level club.

A few thank you’s:
Gambo for his Stadium Calculator
Darkhorse for his Market Calculator (from version 9!)
Cephasjames, whose 500+ team fictional universe pack which gave me the nicknames and unis/logos for this world. The set up isn’t true to what the set was designed for, but what OOTP player doesn’t tinker with the smallest detail?

Preseason 1/1/1946

Since drafting an entire organization is beyond what I feel capable of, I let the AI draft the whole league. Each club drafted with a budget, but I’m mostly pleased with what the Black Sox ended up with.

I don’t see the need to get aggressive with deals or anything at this point, I’ll need some Spring Training games to have any kind of feel for the team’s dynamic. I intend on carrying 10 pitchers and 15 position players. At this point seven roster spots are claimed because of contract situations: 2 pitchers and 5 batters. We’re in pretty good shape as far as options go and only have 26 slots on the 40-Man Roster occupied.

Like most clubs, we have a group making $20K+, and a whole bunch of guys on minimum or minor league deals. (I did some league wide adjustments on player salaries, as part of overall financial futzing I did. Think of it as a single season attempt to control player cost that failed. There no contracts over 3 years and I used the salary slots from the game’s financial engine to adjust contracts.)

Not a whole lot of GMing to do right now. I’ve thrown out offers to some players for either a straight minor league deal or one with a ML option. There are also a few intriguing players on the waiver wire, but I may see if they clear and if a minor league deal will bring them in. I want to have some options as we move towards Spring Training.

I’m also going to clear out some of the lower level players to give myself some minor league maneuverability. Can’t sign a player if there is no roster spot open. A lot of these SA and R level players who survive this round of cuts will be let go after the First Year Draft in June to make way for hopefully better prospects. The scouting reports on almost all of the minor leaguers are not promising. Hopefully, I can sign some of my FA targets and have some replacement players who are not completely overmatched if needed at the Major League level.

3/2/1946 to 3/8/1946: Week one of Spring Training

You know things are going bad when you need a starter to have a strong outing to take the pressure off your bullpen IN SPRING TRAINING! A 2-5 week with 3 straight games of allowing at least 10 runs (10, 15, 10). The guys auditioning for the rotation have been decent enough in abbreviated outing, but oh that bullpen. When they come in, it is all day baseball. I made some minor league offers to some control-type relievers. Our current group has a 23 BB/15 K ratio. And that ratio will make for a long season. I kid myself that as the starters get extended, the issues will be 'hidden', but I am worried right now about these arms.

Offensively, it has been a mixed bag. We lost our probable starting second baseman for a couple weeks to back stiffness, so I still want to see what he can do. I've been playing lots of guys, not working with a set line up or really paying attention to platoon splits, so some of our overall offensive struggles aren't bothering me yet. Worried about the overall lack of team speed, not sure how much I need to worry about the lack of power (1 3B 2 HR). Anything I do like? I'm pretty confident in our outfield defense.

You have a pitcher named Qorgyle? Is he from Remulon 5 or something?

Whenever I see a name like that, I assume it came from the Westeros name DB at OOTPMods. I don't care if the names are 'realistic' I just want variety!

3/9/1946 to 9/15/1946: Week two of Spring Training

The bullpen is still a scramble, but things are starting to take shape. A 3-3 record over the week was mostly a product of the starting pitchers and offense. The group of three I just brought in have stabilized the pen only because I can skip over the more incendiary arms now in the pen.

After two turns, I trim the ST rotation from 6 to 5 men. I felt my choice was between Salvador Domunguez and Jose Artigas to move to the pen. Artigas was the coin flip choice. I think Domunguez’s control issues (6BB/0K) would make me crazy if he was in the pen. Artigas is still on my radar as long man/Double Header starter, if he can sting a few good innings together. Honestly, I think I’m still trying to sort out more than half the pitching slots on the roster.

The offensive picture is still coming together. If Brennen Ronson can produce like I think he can when he is able to get back on the field, we should have a good everyday lineup. I wish someone would set up more at catcher and the second backup infielder slot is a puzzler. If Calvin Van den Houten can keep doing positive things offensively and defensively, he could pose me a problem. Darby Stygg, Blaine Almaroad and Mohor Ruehr have not done much to deserve a roster spot, but Van Den Houten was slated for AA. Should he play every day in the minors or a couple times a week in The NA?

3/16/1946 to 3/26/1946: Week Three (and a bit) to end Spring Training

Just like I should not have gotten too down when we were 2-7 to start the Spring Season, I should not get too excited about the 10-5 finish to spring. Overall, played better baseball defensively and on the base paths. Bullpen is still a worry, I have a feeling I'll still be putting it together through April.

The distance to the fences make this a difficult HR park, but gap hitters love the huge LL-RC dimensions.

Right handed power loves this park. Almost no carry to Right Field will foil Lefty power. Fair to everyone for singles--not a good 2B/3B park.

It takes real power to leave this yard. Excellent park for 2B/3B. Lefties do slightly better than right handed hitters.

Just a tough park to hit at, no matter how you swing. Right handed hitting has it just a bit worse. If you get your hits by the outfielders, you can run all-day.
