The Fall Classic
The Fall Classic. When it comes down to it the game of baseball or anygame is about the championship. Still there is something extra special and nostalgic about the championship of baseball or the World Series. As many of us know the first world series was held in 1903 and has been played through generations as in my opinion the most coveted prize in sport. This thread will be about that championship and only that. I will be playing out an OOTP history and will post in this forum the championship play of October. I will actually start this in 1871, well before the first World Series to add history to the Series and also give the older players a chance at immortality. Unlike other threads the posts between World Series for these threads may take some time as I will play out the historic series for my own enjoyment. The Gambo/Spritze database will be used but all real transactions will be turned off and we will see what history brings and who will be the most dominant franchise in history. As everyone knows I like to take my time with my threads, so I hope you enjoy this one for a while. |

I had an idea for something like this before, but as a random-debut kind of thing. I'm really looking forward to this.

1871 Fall Classic Boston Red Stockings (16-14) vs Philadelphia Athletics (20-10) Philadelphia - The Athletics had the best record in baseball and are lead by Cal McVey who hit .340 on the season. The A's have Mike Golden on the mound who won 18 games with a 6.1 WAR. The real incentive however for this team is to play for their fallen superstar Cap Anson. Anson went down in midseason with a career ending injury. Anson was the star of the team and and his teammates are determined to dedicate a win to him. Players to watch: Cal McVey (.340, 26 RBI), John Bass (28 RBI), Mike Golden (18 wins) Boston - The Red Stockings won the pennant by one game over Cincinnati and actually lost their last three games. The team will be clear underdogs in the series and some say are lucky to be there. Manager Harry Wright is a great baseball mind while his brother George leads at short stop. Unlike the A's, Boston used three starting pitchers over the course of the 30 game season and lead the league in stolen bases with 63. Players to watch: Andy Leonard (.308, 13 SB), Jim Foran (2 Hr, 18 RBI), Hugh Campbell (3-3, 1.88 ERA) Last edited by Nick Soulis; 01-24-2015 at 05:24 PM. |

Now this could be my cup of tea. Or maybe not. Not 100% sure yet. But it starts with a bang at the very least:

Yes quite unexpected and dramatic for maybe the most decorated player of the 19th century. Still that is why history is replayed and others can step up and take the limelight. Still kind of cool that the Athletics, void of their best player, still are in the mix to win the championship. |

Game 1
Cal McVey goes 3-4 and drives in three runs as the A's take the opening game scoring 10 unanswered runs after being down 7-1. John Bass hit the first ever World Series home run as the favored A's took the opener in a series that is sure to produce a lot of runs. Twenty one errors were committed in the game including five by George Wright. Game 2
Cy Bentley was hit by the pitch in the third inning and had to leave the game and Boston made a run in this game but the Athletics hold on for the win and series advantage. Dick McBride allowed only two earned runs on the mound and went the distance while Fred Abrecrombie scored three runs. Jim Clinton ended the game with an unassisted line drive double play to Jerry Turbidy. All the press and the experts are already starting to count Boston out. Game 3
Charles Witherow has carried Philadelphia one game away from the championship as he went the distance to spoil the day in Boston. The A;s only made five errors in this game and Witherow actually drove in two runs of his own with the bat. Cal McVey is hitting .538 for the series thus far and has driven in six runs. Game 4
The Athletics put away the championship in style and without any doubt as they hammer 18 hits and come out to a 17-5 lead before winning it by five. Tom Bass went 4-6 and Tom York went 4-5 as the A;s hammered Hugh Campbell for the second time in the series. In the end it was not contest as the first champions are well deserved and reside in Philadelphia. |

1872 Fall Classic Brooklyn Atlantics (17-13) vs Philadelphia Athletics (17-13) Brooklyn Atlantics The Atlantics just missed the pennant last season but got over the hump in 1872, holding off Boston by two games. The Atlantics swing the bat like a team possessed, always making contact and hitting .313 as a team. Al Pratt is the ace of the staff but in the World Series the Atlantics will have depth as Rynie Wolters is a great secondary arm to have. Wes Fisler and Lip Pike lead the offense and have gotten the attention of the big city and the league as a whole. The Atlantics really feel confident that they can dethrone the defending champions in the seven game series. Player to watch: Wes Fisler (.375, .392 OBP, 28 RBI, 33 R) Philadelphia Athletics It was a lot more dramatic for the A's this season after they won the pennant on the last day of the season beating out St. Louis with a ninth inning rally. The A's are back however and remind us of their sweep winning the title last season. Cal McVey didn't win the batting title this season but is still considered possibly the best hitter in the game. Mcvey was supported by John Bass who hit .333 and was muscle in the middle of the order. Many feel this team just knows how to win and manager Dick Mcbride is a great motivator, McBride will also have to pitch in the big series and be a part of the outcome. Player to watch: Mike Golden (17-12, 2.75 ERA, 21 K, 1.05 ERA+) |

The Series
Game 1 At Jefferson Street Grounds
The manager Dick McBride pitches brilliantly in game one going a full nine and allowing zero earned runs and only three hits. McBride also drove in a run and Cal McVey scored twice as the A's win their fifth consecutive World Series game. Game 2 At Jefferson Street Grounds
Another win for the A's as their pitching has completely shut down the Atlantics. Mike Golden the team ace was the man with the goods in this game and a six run 7th inning swings this game in the favor of the A's. Fred Abrecrombie drove in two and John Bass is hitting .429 in the two games. The Atlantics just seem nervous on this stage as stars like Lip Pike have no hits in the two losses. Game 3 At Capitoline Grounds
The Atlantics turn the tables in their first game at home. Doug Allison drives in three runs and scores two as Brooklyn slammed out 15 hits. Brooklyn also played nice defense commiting only one error behind Al Pratt and the Philadelphia Series streak is over as we have a series again. Game 4 At Capitoline Grounds
Shreeks and shouts in Brooklyn as the Athletics silence the home side and wrestle control back in the series. Cal McVey went 3-4 and Jack Manning 3-5 with 3 RBI while Dick McBride wasn't as dominant on the mound but added two more hits with the bat. Eighteen year old Manning made a name for himself including stealing two of the six bases the winners swiped. Rynie Wolters didn't get much out of his 151 pitches for Brooklyn in the crucial loss. Game 5 At Capitoline Grounds
Resolve. That is what Brooklyn showed on this afternoon refusing to allow the Athletics to win it on their field. John Greenig a surprise starter allowed 11 hits but only one run as once again the best defense in the league game through behind him. Doug Allison and Wes Fisler each drove in three runs and now head back to Philly with their heads held high and their best arms ready to go. Philadelphia may have thought this series was already wrapped up. Game 6 At Jefferson Street Grounds
In a tense game Jack Manning becomes the hero as he singles in the bottom of the ninth off of Al Pratt to score pitcher Charles Witherow for the championship winning run. The A's bring home their second championship but this time it was much more competitive. Al Pratt pitched his heart out and Brooklyn had a brief lead in the 6th but the champions wouldn't let this one go. Dick McBride has built the best baseball team in the nation. |

1873 Fall Classic Chicago White Stockings (18-12) vs Cleveland Forest Citys (21-9) Chicago White Stockings The third different team in as many years to win the NL pennant and manager Jimmy Wood finally got the most of his men. The White Stockings are the best hitting team in the league with 291 runs and a .316 average. Gat Stires in the middle of the order drove in 33 runs while Deacon White has settled as the best catcher in the game and another great leader for this team. George Bradley still doesn't have all the confidence in the Chicago fan base as the right hander had a losing record overall. A deceptive curve throwing Candy Cummings could be a factor in the series for Chicago. Excitement is at an alltime high as Chicago welcomes their first winner. Player to watch: Gat Stires (.305, 2 HR, 33 RBI, Cleveland Forest Citys It wasn't easy to dethrone the champion Athetics but Cleveland was able to do so with an alltime best record of 21-9. The team stole 62 bases in 30 games and are lead by Ross Barnes breakout hitter Rit Harrison. The star of this team however is strong pitcher Jim Britt who won 19 games and proved to many that the 17 year old right hander is the best the game has to offer for many years to come. Orator Schaffer is another big personality for this team as many feel they are the favorites to keep the title in the Amercian League. Player to watch: Jim Britt (19-9, 2.88 ERA, 19 BB, 6.2 WAR)

The Series
Cleveland wins series 4 games to 2 Game 1 At National Association Grounds Jim Britt did his thing and showed rare composure for a 17 year old going 9 innings allowing only three runs on five hits. Ross Barnes scored two runs and a four run 5th inning turned the tide of the opening game. Loser Morrie Critchley deserved better as he lost but did not allow an earned run. Game 2 At National Association Grounds Seven errors in the first three innings are the demise of the Whites as they get hosed off the field to lose their second game of the series. It may have been the way the ball was coming off of the bats as Candy Cummings threw his bender, but few excuses matter as U Booth made seven errors at short! Ross Barnes drove in three runs as did Steve Bellan as the series moves west. Game 3 At Union Baseball Grounds A definitive game as the Whites gave it their all in front of their home fans but come up a run short and now may as well concede the series. Ross Barnes is hitting .400 in the series and singled in the tying run in the 8th inning before scoring the winning run on a wild pitch. Chicago took a four run lead in the very first inning and never let up but again their defense and 10 errors proved to be the difference. Game 4 At Union Baseball Grounds Cleveland plays the fool in this game with 12 errors and fail to capitalize on having their ace on the mound for the sweep. Morrie Critchley has another good start and goes the distance in the first Chicago win. Deacon White has two runs and two hits to keep his average at .353. Chicago will try and send the series back to Cleveland with Candy Cummings on the hill. Game 5 At Union Baseball Grounds Deacon White and manager Jimmy Wood both hit home runs and Candy Cummings went the distance as the Whites win two in a row, please their fans, and have added interest to this series again. The proud Indian Cherokee Fisher just didn't have it today in a well played game as a five run 7th was the backbreaker. Cleveland need to focus now because no one on their side wants to think about a game seven. Game 6 At National Association Grounds John Greason won his second game of the series and this time it was the clincher as the American League wins again and Cleveland are the new champions. Lou Sylvester scored four times in the game and a six run 8th inning began the party early. There was little doubt that the Forest Citys were the best team in baseball this series and season. |

Don't know if it's just me, but the line scores for the 1873 Series don't show.
