OOTP16 - Atlanta Braves
So a few weeks ago I stumbled onto an article talking about playing with teams of Adam Dunn's and such and discovered the awesomeness that is OOTP! Since then I have become an addict playing almost every game of the 2015 Braves season. It didn't go well (as you will see later) but I got hooked!
I have done dynasty reports in the past on other forums for other games (NCAA franchise mainly) and they usually force me to pay closer attention to the whole landscape instead of just honing in on my team and thus make the experience WAY more in depth and engaging so I am gonna try and do the same with OOTP. Warning though I manage every single game (including Spring Training) & run my whole minor leage system (I don't delegate well...) so this will be a slow moving dynasty but I plan to go pretty in depth an hopefully make it interesting and entertaining read. Also there are so many awesome dynasties here I just couldn't help but join! I don't have a ton of house rules. I use the 80-20 rating scale but besides that left everything on default. In time I might tweak the settings but for a noob like myself it works well. The big house rule I have is trying not to trade rape the AI but sending them 4-5 players & tons of cash for 1 awesome prospect as you just don't see that in real life. I can only do trades where I can send 1 more player than I receive or vice versa. It prevented me in 2015 from getting a few big prospects for some run of the mill vets Going to do a recap of my 2015 season along with overview of the current organization and all the offseason mayhem some point today and hopefully get this thread caught up to where I am in the game! |

Looking forward to seeing what happens! I had an Atlanta file in OOTP 15 for a little while. I wound up focusing on other games, but I grew to really love the team. Can't wait to see where you take them.

2015 Season Review After a terrible 2014 season finale, the Braves Owner John Malone fired GM Frank "Bad Contracts" Wren and brought in respected front office man John Hart. Who then turned around and did something crazy firing manager Freddie Gonzalez (not too crazy) and hired a young, unknown 25 yr old named WeagleWeagle (solid name) to not only manage the team but run the front office(very stupid). The move was met by skepticism from the fanbase & media but owner John Malone was undeterred saying"It may look dumb now but talk to me again in 2017 and see who looks foolish." Still no matter who they hired it was going to be a long season in 2015 as the Braves went into rebuilding mode, hoping to build a contender for the new stadium in 2017. The Braves were picked to finish 4th in the NL East before the season but after the first 2 months it looked like the Braves were going to challenge for the East crown. After May the Braves were sitting only 2.5 GB from the red hot Marlins and a game ahead of the stumbling Nats. June though would see a big blow as Jace Peterson the Braves #2 hitter would go down for 2 months. At the time I don't think anyone realized how important Peterson's bat was to the Braves at the top of the lineup. It wasn't till July that it became painfully obvious as the Braves won only 7 games the whole month falling completely out of the race and 11 GB. Things got worse in August when their best all around hitter Freddie Freeman went down with a hand injury for the rest of the season. They were never able to recover finishing the season exactly where they were picked, 4th with a record of 72-90.... Team Leaders There was no surprise who the top bat for Atlanta was in 2015. 1B Freddie Freeman led the Braves in almost every hitting category even though he missed all of September and some of August. He hit just a point over .300, slugged 20 HRs, & drove in 74 runs compiling a solid wOBA of .365. The strength of the Braves for most of the season was the starting pitching. Alex Wood was the only Brave to play in the All Star game (although Scott Kazmir who was aquired after did play as well) and his ERA stayed under 3 for almost the whole season. He and Shelby Miller both finished top 15 in strikeouts. Julio Teheran was rough for the first half of the season but seemed to find his groove at in the final 2 months. The Braves also acquired Scott Kazmir late in July in a very interesting trade (more later) who finished with an impressive 17 wins and mid 3 ERA. 2015 Transactions The Braves did a lot of wheeling and dealing in July when things took a sudden and sharp downward spiral. The main goal was to offload some larger salaries and acquire some solid prospects for the future

2015 MLB Season Review It was an interesting season in 2015 with some big time performances and some big name injuries. The Cincinnati Reds posted the best NL record going 97-65 lead by their 1B slugger Joey Votto who earned MVP honors in 2015. The Reds were a juggernaut in 2015 posting posting the best team ERA in the NL at 3.19 and scoring the 2nd most runs per game with 4.8. In the east it was the Marlins who finished first thanks in large part to their ridiculous starting pitching lead by, no not Jose Fernandez but instead Cy Young Award winner Mat Latos who finished 15-6 with ERA of 2.54 and an FIP of 3.12. The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled out the west division by taking 3 of 4 from the Giants in the final week of the season. What was remarkable was they did it with out Clayton Kershaw who tore his labrum in early June and missed all of 2015. That played a huge role in the playoffs. The Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs earned the two Wildcard spots. It was a very tight race at the end with the Cubs beating out the Giants by 2 games. The Cubs earned a Wildcard spot in large part because of their outstanding rookies Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler. Soler was an unstoppable force in the 2nd half of the season finishing with NL leading 37 HRs. In fact the top 2 HR hitters in the NL were both rookies as the Phillies Darrin Ruf exploded for 31 and lead the NL in RBIs with 108. In the AL things were not as tight. It was apparent the Angels and the Indians were the top of the class for most of the season while the Rays thanks to outstanding pitching slowly pulled away from the competition. The Red Sox were leading at the All Star break but of a host of injuries including Mookie Betts resulted in a late collapse. The Oakland A's were an interesting story in 2015. Early in the season it was their pitching that lead them but come the trade deadline they wanted to add some offense and so traded the Atlanta Braves for Mark Trumbo giving away Kazmir. The move proved brilliant as Trumbo smashed 16 HRs in the final 3 months and drove in 51. However come the ALCS they really missed having Kazmir at the top of the rotation resulting in a heartbreaking Game 7 loss to the eventual World Series champion Tampa Bay Rays. Speaking of the Rays what an incredible playoffs they put together. Drew Smyly was untouchable outdueling both Stephen Strasburg & Max Scherzer in the World Series. 2016 Offseason Review It was a quiet offseason for the Atlanta Braves. The biggest moves were extending contracts to Shelby Miller & Alex Wood. Two guys the braves see as top of the rotation pitchers for the next few season. Time will tell if these were smart moves or not but for now the Braves are set at the top of the rotation with Alex Wood, Shelby Miller, & Julio Tehran. The biggest signing for the Braves was lefty reliever Sean Marshall. Marshall missed 4 months last season due to a bone spur in his elbow but the Braves staff believe he has fully recovered and should give them a true LOOGY something that gave the Braves trouble last year especially in the 2nd half of the season. Braves also brought in what they hope will be there #4 starter in 2016 while they wait for their young arms to develop in signing Brett Anderson. The 28 yr old lefty dominated the Braves both times last season so GM WeagleWeagle said if you can't beat him, sign him. He went 8-11 with a 4.21 ERA & 4.18 FIP in 2015. Atlanta also made one trade acquiring another solid starting pitching prospect in AJ Cole to add to Matt Wisler & Mike Foltynewicz. In exchange we sent CF Craig Gentry & SP prospect Mauricio Cabrera. Gentry was a bust since our trade batting .245 and striking out a butt ton. I now have like 5 young guys competing for 2 spots in our rotation. I forsee some Braves trades in my future. The Braves made a bit of a gamble in the Rule 5 draft taking 3B rookie Christian Villanueva with the 7th pick. Villanueva does not really fit the type of player that GM WeagleWeagle plans on building team with as he is a high strikeout, low contact guy but the Braves are in desperate need of some power bats. He is a solid defender and whacked 20 HRs in AAA ball for the Iowa Cubs. He will get a shot at starting in spring training but at the least he will be a home run hitting PH for Braves. 2016 Atlanta Braves Moves
2016 MLB Moves It was a wild offseason that saw some big name free agents sign some big contracts. The biggest move however was a trade between the Giants & Angels. Los Angeles sent embattled star OF Josh Hamilton to San Francisco for young stud C Andrew Susac & young SP Nick A. Lee. The move was met with some eyebrows by Giants fans. Hamilton hit .275 with 15 HRs & 66 RBIs but battled injuries all last season along with rumors of a recent relapse not including that abomination of a contract. But you can't help but tremble when seeing that middle lineup the Giants will be putting on the field in 2015. Andrew Susac was blocked by Buster Posey and so gets a chance to start in 2016. However the trade that was probably the most shocking was between Phillies & Mets. New York received stud rookie 1B Darrin Ruf who hit the 2nd most HRs in 2015 with 31. In exchange the Mets sent SP Josh Collmeter who they received midseason in 2015 from the DBacks. The Phillies were looking for a boost to their rotation but seems odd to send what looks like a budding star to their division rival. Will be interesting to see who looks smart on this trade in 2016. There were some big time foreign free agents in 2016 offseason but the top one is also the one with the best name 1B Dae Ho Lee. Lee is a power hitting 1B that has hit .303, .300, & .285 the last 3 seasons in Korean ball with 24 HR, 19 HR, & 18 HR. The Dodgers spent a bunch to bring the 33 year old in but when you got money to blow why not bring the strongest foreign free agent in with a plus name Top 2016 Free Agent Signings

 2016 Braves Spring Training Preview It wasn't the busiest of offseason for the Braves in 2015 as they are attempting to build via their farm system and the young talent on MLB roster already. 42 players are on the Spring Training roster with hopes to make the 25 man Opening Day roster. Some have their spots locked up while others will duel for their first Opening Day on a MLB club. The main competition comes for the 5th starting spot, bullpen, & outfield. Below is a position breakdown of the current Spring Training roster. Starting Rotation Locks 1.) SP Alex Wood Out ace and top pitcher, we need him to be amazing all season long 2.) SP Shelby Miller Bounced back in 2015 and I expect another strong season in 2016 3.) SP Julio Teheran Had a disappointing 2015 campaign and still not sold on him being a top end starter. Will need a strong season or I might look to move him and his contract come trade deadline Battling for Roster Spots *These guys will be battling for 4th & 5th rotation spot along with the long reliever spot SP Brett Anderson Pretty much lock for the 4th spot unless he is terrible in Spring Training, we will see if he is there all season RP Cody Martin Martin spent time as a starter and a reliever in 2015. He was outstanding in his first 6 starts but fell off in the later months so much so he was bumped back to the bullpen in favor of prospect Mike Foltynewicz SP Mike Foltynewicz One of the many solid young arms on the roster. He got the call up in late June and had 3 outstanding starts in his first appearances. After that things got rocky as he finished with 2-11 record & 5.10 ERA & 4.23 FIP SP Matt Wisler Considered by Baseball America to be out top pitching prospect, Wisler got the call up in September when the rosters were expanded. He was so-so in his first MLB action finishing 3-4 with 4.50 ERA & impressive 3.62 FIP SP Eric Fultz Fultz started last season as the 5th starter before getting destroyed multiple times and being sent to Gwinnett. He ended up performing strong in AAA ball and will have shot at the 5th spot or long reliever position SP AJ Cole Really like this guy's potential although scout Brian Bridges doesn't agree. He pitched well in AAA ball last season and is hoping 2016 is his year to get the callup SP Manny Banuelos Lefty prospect was promotes from AA to AAA midseason last year & struggled in the promotion. He will get a chance to possibly steal that 5th starter spot but unless he blows me away he will be back in AAA SP Jason Hursh Hursh spent all of 2015 in AA ball & will get his first taste of MLB life in spring training. He has a very nice future in front of him & I am curious to see how he does in Spring Training Bullpen LocksRP Jim Johnson Will be the setup man in 2016 & backup closer if we need him CL RJ Alvarez Picked him up in July & has shot at being closer of the future. Has plus, plus fastball that tops out at 100 mph along with curveball, slider & changeup Battling for Roster Spot *There are 5 middle relief bullpen positions for a ton of arms, should be interesting battle* RP Sean Marshall Will be our LOOGY unless is terrible in spring training RP Luis Avilan Was our LOOGY in 2015 but was terrible by July and was sent to Gwinnett. Gets chance to redeem himself this spring RP Josh Outman Spent most of 2015 on DL, when activated he became LOOGY & was ok... I like his stuff but needs better control if he is going to be someone we rely on RP Andrew McKirahan Became our lefty setup guy midway through 2015. Decent stuff and solid control but isn't really outstanding in anything RP Brady Feigl The final lefty of the group, he got some action in September during roster expansion in 2015 and did decent. He will need to be overwhelmingly impressive to earn a roster spot for opening day RP Tanner Roark We received Roark in the AJ Cole trade. He could be a long relief option too but for now I am starting him off as a mid reliever RP Juan Jaime Control, control, control. That is the name of the game for Jaime. When he has it he is tough, when he doesn't it gets ugly. Needs a strong spring for me to trust him RP Brandon Cunniff Another young arm that got a chance to play in 2015. Liked a lot of what I saw in 2015 but he has some serious competition for a spot in 2016 RP Angel Nesbitt By far the highest upside of the group. In his first 2 appearances in 2015 he struck out all 6 batters he faced. After that things got hit or miss. He could use some more development time in 2016 but I really want him to be our 8th inning guy by the end of the season CL John Cornerly If we didn't have Alvarez, Cornerly would be locked in as our closer in 2016. Could earn a spot as a setup man with a great spring training Catcher Locks C Christian Bethancourt Outstanding defender, very weak bat. He split start with AJ last season but this year hoping he will be more of an everyday guy. If he ever develops a consistent bat he could be REALLY good C AJ Pierzynski AJ was the definition of clutch in 2015 leading the teams in walkoffs. He hit .265 with 4 HR & 51 RBIs in 2015, not bad for backup catcher. He has had his issues in the past but is considered a leader in our clubhouse. That might actually be a bad thing.... Getting Reps C Kyle Higashioka No chance of making roster unless injury but wanted to see how talented this kid is. Will get majority of ABs @ catcher for first few games Infielders Locks 1B Freddie Freeman The cornerstone of our franchise, we NEED him to be amazing in 2016 for us to have any hope at playoffs 2B Jose Peraza Only 22 yrs old, Peraza was our top prospect in 2015. He got the call up in the summer after Jace went down with injury. He is fast and is 80 rated defender but needs a more consistent bat and to work more walks. Will be everyday 2B in 2016 SS Andrleton Simmons Had the most errors of his career in 2015 but was still considered the best SS defender because of his ridiculous range. Was absolutely horrendous with RISP last season so that needs to get better. If he becomes a consistent .275 hitter that would be a GREAT boost for our squad 3B Jace Peterson Is developing into a superstar. With Peraza's great defense at 2nd I decided to train him at 3rd. He is gonna have errors but I think he can develop into an MLB 3B. 2nd best hitter on the team right now 3B Christian Villanueva Won't be everyday 3B in 2016 but will get his spot starts. Hoping he can get better patience & contact at plate but at the least he needs to give us some power Battling for Utility Spot 3B Philip Gosselin The favorite to fill the utility role in 2016. Just kinda average at everything but solid enough to play all the roles on defense that aren't catcher 2B Elmer Reyes I really like this kid. Might need another year in minors before becoming a major leaguer but he will get his chance 3B Adonis Garcia This 30 yr old has been around for awhile in the minors battling for chance in the major leagues. Will need a monster spring to make roster Outfield Locks RF Nick Markakis Disappointing 2015 season but is a great defender but gets on base and can hit for good average Battling for Roster Spots LF Eric Young Jr. Played everywhere in outfield in 2015, hit .257 had .329 OBP, 3 HRs & 39 RBIs. More than likely will make the roster but will have to earn it RF Chris B. Young Signed probably too expensive contract but hoping to give us great production as a 4th OFer in 2016. Needs decent spring to make roster CF Maxwell Smith Very excited to see this guy play. Speed is his game & is our top positional prospect in the roster. Has very good plate discipline and so will be option at top of the lineup. Could be a .300+ avg hitter & 50 SB type of guy LF Dian Toascaro When Braves suffered injuries to 3 of their OFers in 2015 called up Dian to start in LF for a month & half. Hit .296 with impressive .377 OBP along with solid defense. Could earn spot with a great spring LF Cedric Hunter Was the best hitter for Gwinnett in 2015 & played in September when roster expanded showing some pop in his bat. Curious to see how he does in spring RF Destin Hood Hoping for a strong spring so I have excuse to put him on the Opening Day roster but at the least he will give us quality bat in AAA RF Kyeong Kang Was outstanding in AA last season so got bumped up to AAA near end of the year. 2016 Spring Training Review It was a pretty average spring training for Braves as Atlanta went 12-14. The Braves answered a few of their questions going into spring training but there are still some large question marks. After 4 rounds of cuts the Braves are down to 25 man roster and ready for the 2016 season! There was a big move made in spring training as manager/GM WeagleWeagle realized the Braves had no power in the lineup not named Freddie Freeman. They wanted a young, power hitting corner outfield to stick in the #3 spot the only spot in lineup he is willing to sacrifice strikeouts for power. Rumors flew as the Braves shopped around some of their young arm talent including a crazy 8 man deal with the Yankees that would have resulted with the Braves landing Aaron Judge. However, after a few days of discussion the Braves found a trade the worked for them Spring Training Trade Astros Receive SP Mike Foltynewicz (26 years old) 2-11 5.10 ERA in 2015 SP Daniel Winkler (26 years old) 5-3 4.70 ERA in AAA ball in 2015 $5,000,000 Braves Receive RF Domingo Santana (23 years old) .281/.336/.633 12 HR 31 RBI in 2015 1B Conrad Gregor (24 years old) .273/.347/.436 5 HR 20 RBI in AAA in 2015 So let me break this down as this was a pretty big move. Folty has incredible potential but I think with the young arms we have in the farm guys like Wisler & Cole have higher upside. I REALLY needed a power bat and he needed to be right handed as we are lefty heavy currently at top of the order. Do you realize how hard it is to find a young, power hitting right hander that plays LF? I found one that hit almost everything but playing RF. Domingo Santana is a big time homer threat and outstanding defender in RF but he strikes out WAY more than I usually like but the way I build my lineup the #3 spot is the only place in order I don't worry as much about strikeouts but instead someone that slugs & yes this guy slugs. Hit 5 HRs in spring training but hit .210 so gonna be interesting season. It literally took me an hour to finalize this deal as I had 4 other trades I almost completed. This game is ridiculous.... Opening Day
Milwaukee, WI - The Brewers & Cardinals kicked off the 2016 baseball season with a pitcher's duel. Anibal Sanchez took the opening day start for the Brew Crew while Adam Wainwright started for the Cardinals. Both were untouchable for most of the game as both went 8 innings with a score 1-0 heading into the 9th. Things broke up then when Kelvin Herrera surrendered 2 thanks to a 2 RBI double by Kolten Wong. The Brewers made things interesting in the last half scoring one on a Tyler Collins single but with 2 outs & bases loaded Jonathan Lucroy hit a long, deep flyout out to RF to give St. Louis the opening day win.   Series Preview The Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets are set to do battle to open the 2016 season. The Mets retooled their lineup over the offseason & added 2015 NL CY Young Award winner Matt Latos to the rotation, though the Dark Knight (Matt Harvey) is still the club's ace. Series Review It wasn't the start the Braves were hoping for in 2016 as they dropped their home opening series to the New York Mets. Atlanta's starting pitching was outstanding but weak offense and a spotty bullpen resulted in two tough losses. The biggest concerns for the Braves right now has to be Jace Peterson and Jose Peraza. Both are considered building blocks of the future but their bats were non existent in the first series. Neither recorded a hit & in Peterson's case didn't even reach base.... Game 1 Mets 5 @ Braves 2 WP: Matt Harvey (1-0) 8.0 IP 9 H 2 ER 7 K LP: Alex Wood (0-1) 7.0 IP 7 H 3 ER BB 7 K S: Bobby Parnell (1) 1.0 IP Player of the Game: Matt Harvey Braves Drop Opener Atlanta, GA - For most of the night it was the pitching duel both sides expected sending their aces to the mounds. The Braves got a run in the 1st thanks to some small ball as rookie Mallex Smith singled, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on flyout before scoring on a Freddie Freeman single. The Mets would respond in the top of the 2nd with Steven Souza double scoring Travis d/Arnaud. After that both pitchers would hold their own until the 5th when the Mets added another run. The Braves threatened twice in the bottom of the 4th and bottom of the 8th as Jace Peterson came up both times (first with bases loaded, second with a man on 3rd) and flew out both times leaving a total of 6 men on base in a hitless day. The Braves cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th thanks to a clutch double by AJ but that would be it for the Braves. Shae Simmons surrendered 2 runs in the top of the 9th and Bobby Parnell shut the door in the 9th to give the Mets the 5-2 win. MLB Top Performers
Game 2 Mets 2 @ Braves 3 WP: Shelby Miller (1-0) 6.0 IP 5 H 2 ER 6 K LP: Mat Latos (0-1) 5.2 IP 8 H 3 ER BB 4 K S: RJ Alvarez (1) 1.0 IP BB 2 K Player of the Game: Andrelton Simmons 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI Simmons Saves Braves Atlanta, GA - Early in the season it is becoming clear, the Braves are going to need amazing pitching to win and tonight they got that from Shelby Miller and their bullpen. Besides a 2 run shot by Carlos Moncrief in the 3rd inning, Miller was nearly perfect striking out 6, walking none & surrendering only 5 hits. He got great support from the pen as Angel Nesbitt, Luis Avilan, Jim Johnson & RJ Alvarez combined to throw 3 innings of 1 hit shutout ball. The big inning for the offense came in the 6th when Mallex Smith opened the inning with a double. After a Peterson flyout & Santana strikeout the Braves found some 2 out magic. Freddie Freeman singled in Smith, then Markakis singled to put men on 1st & 2nd. That's when Andrelton Simmons came up big driving a double into the left center scoring both Markakis & Freeman. That would be enough and the Braves left Turner Field with a W. MLB Top Performers
Game 3 Mets 4 @ Braves 2 WP: Zack Wheeler (1-0) 6.0 IP 8 H 2 ER 5 K LP: Julio Teheran (0-1) 6.1 IP 6 H 4 ER 8 K S: Bobby Parnell (2) 1.0 IP K Player of the Game: RF Carlos Moncrief 1-2, 2 RBI Moncrief Lifts Mets Past Braves Atlanta, GA - Braves fans will enjoy not having to face Carlos Moncrief for while. The Mets RF came in as a pinch hitter with bases loaded in a tie game and broke the game open with a single down the left field line scoring 2. That proved to be enough as Familia & Parnell teamed up to pitch 3 scoreless innings and the Braves fell 4-2. Julio was saddled with the loss but his numbers hide how good of a game he actually pitched for the most part. Teheran ran into trouble in the 1st but after that he pitched great going 6.1 innings, surrendering 6 hits, 4 runs, & striking out 8. 3 of those 4 runs came in the top of the 7th when a pair of seeing eye singles got the inning started & chased Teheran. Sean Marshall came in to get out #2 but Nesbitt proved ineffective walking the first man he faced then surrendering the game winning single. As for the Braves offense, Christian Bethancourt hit his first homer of the season in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game. The next inning Andrelton Simmons hit a sac fly bringing home Freddie Freeman. There has to be concern though for the Braves offense as young stars Jose Peraza & Jace Peterson were held hitless all series with Peterson never reaching base. The Braves will travel to Philadelphia tomorrow to try and get their first series win. MLB Top Performers

Atlanta Braves Minor League Organization
Last season my main goal was to figure out how the heck to play this game but now that I have a reasonable understanding of how it works I am taking full control of my minor league organization. Last season our minor league affiliates were pretty terrible for the most part but the worst part of all was our Rookie league manager over using 3 of our top 12 selections and blowing all of their arms out. I fired him in the offseason and took the time to set pitch counts for guys this year so let's hope the damage hasn't fully been done.... Let's look at the minor league organization and plans for each level: Farm System Dominican Summer League Braves (DSL) Roster Size -> 30 This is our Dominican League affiliate. This team performed one well last season finishing first in their division before being knocked out of the playoffs. This is where I will send all international complex guys that are ready and some June draft picks Team Rules All players must be under 22 years old & have not played more than 2 years of rookie ball. If they fail to meet this criteria & don't have the number to be promoted to Daneville then they are released Gulf Coast League Braves (GCL) Roster Size -> 30 This is our other lowest rookie level. The majority of the players drafted in the June amateur draft will end up here. This team was a disappointment last season but the whole staff has been replaced & I am excited to see what they can do after the draft come summer time. Team Rules Players can only spend a max of 2 seasons in this league & should be under 21 unless they are a college draftee. Otherwise if player has failed to excel in 2 seasons at this level they are released Danville Braves Roster Size -> 30 This is our highest level rookie ball team. Players from the DSL & GCL will be promoted here once they have shown enough skill in the lower R ball levels. Last season this club's pitching coach might have ruined 3 of our most promising young arms so the whole staff was replaced. This team is pretty much filled out from last year's GCL or DSL clubs. College kids drafted that need a year or 2 in rookie ball will also be placed on this team Team Rules I only want guys to spend a total of 3 years max in rookie ball (preferably only 2 years) so if a player spent 2 years at DSL or GCL this is their one chance to make the next level. I prefer for guys to be under 22 at this level but college kids will be an exception Rome Braves Roster Size -> 30 This is our low A ball club and of all the clubs the best performing one of 2015 finishing first and losing the championship. If a guy we draft in June looks to be a superstart and already on his way to meeting his potential he could be placed here otherwise this is the first stop for guys that have made it out of our rookie ball system. This is the first level where I will consider midseason promotions if someone is truly excelling and has pitched 100 innings or had at least 150 ABs. Team Rules Guys get 2 years in Rome to prove they can make the next step. After 2 years unless they are a kid that we still see huge potential in they will be released. I prefer players to be under 23 at this level but there are exceptions Carolina Mudcats Roster Size -> 28 Things start getting real here. Guys should be 2-3 years away from the show at this point and we really start paying attention to production. The only time anyone would start at this level is if they are a truly elite prospect that we believe is WAY ahead of the game but for the most part this will be the next step after Rome for our prospects Team Rules I will allow guys a max of 3 years in A ball depending on their age. If a player spends 2 seasons in Rome & then flops @ Carolina chances are high they will be dropped unless they are a top prospect we are trying to develop. Again 23 years old is the preferred age here but we will make exceptions Mississippi Braves Roster Size -> 25 Very rarely will I promote a player from AA to AAA midseason. Only if a player is absolutely dominating so Mississippi is usually where fast rising prospects will spend a whole season before being reevaluated. Guys get 2 years to prove they can move up because at this time if you are 25 & have played 2 years of AA ball without producing chances are high you aren't going to be MLB ready Team Rules Players get 2 years to succeed at Mississippi before being cut unless that prospect is a phenom that maybe we moved up too quickly. I prefer guys at this level to be 24 or under however I will pad with veterans if need be. Gwinnett Braves Roster Size -> 28 The final stop. Here is where our top prospects will spend at least half a season developing and our not quite good enough major leaguers. When injuries strike or players aren't performing I will first check to see if there are any candidates here in AAA before looking for outside help Team Rules Don't have the same age restrictions unless I have a high number of prospects at this level. I want this team well stocked with talent that I can go to if the major league club gets in a jam. I also would prefer prospects spent a season in AAA ball before being called to the dance but as always exceptions will & can be made UP NEXT: Top 20 ATL Prospects |

 Braves Top 20 Prospects Am I overwhelming you yet with words???? Well deal with it because I freaking love this game and everything in it so let's spend WAY too much time evaluating the Brave's top talent. Pretty much all of these guys are players I either drafted or traded for so when they flop we know who to blame.... Just a note guys on this list are guys that have never played in the majors at all Just Missed SP Parker McFadden CL John Cornerly CL Heath Fillmyer SP MacGregor Hines C Matthew Kassowitz #20 SP DeMarcus Evans | 6'5" 245 lbs | Throws: Right | Age 19 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted in 3rd round (74th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: Missed season with 3 month ulnar nerve irritation Evans had one of the highest ceilings when we drafted him in 2015. However due to poor management by previous Danville pitching coach Evans suffered a serious injury to throwing arm that knocked him out for 2015. Scouting Director Brian Bridges & OSA have both dropped his potential way down but I still think he can be great. He throws in the mid 90s with a very good fastball along with a strong changeup and a potentially nasty curve. Needs to work on his control but he still have the stuff to be great. #19 SP Wes Parsons | 6'5" 195 lbs | Throws: Right | Age 23 Mississippi Braves (AA) Acquired: Non drafted FA in 2012 2015 Stats: 6-6, 89.1 IP, 3.02 ERA, 3.81 FIP, 7.4 K/9, 1.1 WAR (Carolina) Parsons is ranked the #44 prospect in MLB by Baseball America. We aren't as high on him as everyone else seems to be but he definitely has potential to be a mid rotation starter. He has 4 pitches: fastball, sinker, slider, & changeup with his fastball topping out at 93. Will spend 2016 in Mississippi working on his stuff & hopefully putting together a big year so he can have a shot at the rotation in 2017 #18 3B Zeke Dodson | 6'2" 205 lbs | Bats: Right | Age 19 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted in 26th round (764th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: .257/.343/.391/.735 4 HR 22 RBI 4 SB (Danville) Dodson is absolutely beloved by OSA & Baseball America who has him as 162 overall rated prospect, however Bridges & I are little less bullish. Still Dodson has potential to be a very good power hitter though his defense has a long way to go. He will spend another season in rookie ball working on his defense & plate discipline. #17 CL Bradley Roney | 6'2" 185 lbs | Throws: Right | Age 23 Mississippi Braves (AA) Acquired: Drafted in 8th round 2014 2015 Stats: 1-5, 13 SV, 35.1 IP, 5.34 ERA, 3.54 FIP, 9.4 K/BB, 0.2 WAR (Mississippi) Roney split time in Carolina & Mississippi last season and performed solid overall. This year barring some unforseen injuries in AAA, Roney will be the closer for Mississippi all season. He only as 2 pitches a fastball that tops out at 94 but has nice movement & a really nasty slider. Want to see more control and maybe see that fastball speed up. #16 SS Sergio Alcantara | 5'10" 150 lbs | Bats: Switch | Age 19 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Trade with ARI (06/09/2015) 2015 Stats: .240/.337/.299/.636 2 HR 39 RBI 4 SB (Rome) Alcantara was acquired in one of my first moves as GM. Traded away our top prospect at the time because I really thought he could become an all star at the SS spot. He struggled mightily in A ball so he will be redoing rookie ball this season as I am afraid he was rushed to the next level. He has potential to be a guy that has a high OBP & I wanna see that in 2016. #15 SP Patrick Sandoval | 6'2" 190 lbs | Throws: Left | Age 19 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted in 8th round (224th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: 3-3, 68.0 IP, 3.44 ERA, 3.89 FIP, 7.8 K/BB, 1.2 WAR Sandoval is an interesting prospect. He has a fastball that can reach 94 mph, a sick curveball, & great changeup. He had a very solid season in GCL last year so I want to see the same kind of production at Danville in 2016. We have him rated much higher than most other scouts #14 CF Carlos Taveras | 5'11" 170 lbs | Bats: Switch | Age 18 Atlanta (DSL) Braves (R) Acquired: Trade with SD (07/31/2015) 2015 Stats: .281/.378/.402/.780 HR 32 RBI 6 SB (R Ball) Taveras has an extremely high ceiling. Still very young so we put him on the DSL team to get a ton of reps after he struggled in Danville last season. He is the type of 5 tool player we are looking develop for our organization so hoping for some monster numbers in 2016 #13 SS A.J. Graffanino | 6'2" 165 lbs | Bats: Switch | Age 18 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted in 7th round (194th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: .251/.340/.393/.733 5 HR 18 RBI 4 SB 0.9 WAR (GATL) A.J. was a nice find in the 7th round. He brings solid defense, has great place discipline and some underrated pop. Wanna see a higher batting average in 2016 & more walks but if he keeps progressing as he is will be a solid option in the middle infield down the road #12 SP Lucas Sims | 6'3" 190 lbs | Throws: Right | Age 21 Mississippi Braves (AA) Acquired: Drafted 1st round (21st OVR) 2012 2015 Stats: 5-8, 3.34 ERA, 3.48 FIP, 2.47 K/BB, 2.2 WAR (Carolina) Sims is a guy that neither scouts are huge on but his production is there. He has solid stuff & three good pitches with a fastball, curveball, & changeup. Lucas spent a small time in AA ball last season but will be spending all of 2016 there working on his control #11 1B Gabriel Garcia | 6'3" 205 lbs | Bats: Right | Age 18 Atlanta (GCL) Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted 6th round (164th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: .199/.256/.362/.618 6 HR 19 RBI SB -0.1 WAR (GATL) Garcia's first season in rookie ball did not go too well although he showed great pop in his bat. Still he was drafted when he was 17 so he has time to learn and that is why he is repeating GCL in 2016. The power is there now he needs to work on the plate discipline #10 LF Dwanya Williams-Sutton | 6'3" 220 lbs | Bats: Right | Age 18 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted 9th round (254th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: .245/.303/.500/.803 12 HR 48 RBI 3 SB 1.3 WAR (GATL) Dwanya not only has an awesome name but a powerful bat. He finished 2nd in the GCL in HRs in 2015 I expect he will challenge for the spot Appalachian League as well. He is young & has awesome upside so it will be fun to watch him develop. Could be a #3 hitter for us one day #9 SP Tyrell Jenkins | 6'3" 210 lbs | Throws: Right | Age 23 Mississippi Braves (AA) Acquired: Trade with STL (2014) 2015 Stats: 6-2, 93.2 IP, 2.02 ERA, 2.81 FIP, 7.7 K/BB, 2.5 WAR (Carolina) Jenkins showed out last season at Carolina, so much so he got the call to jump to Mississippi later in the year & put up a solid 3.36 FIP in just over 60 innings. He can bring the heat @ 95 but also has solid offspeed stuff with curveball, slider, & changeup. I think he is still 1-2 years away from reaching the show but if he keeps up this pace he could be our top pitching prospect in the coming seasons #8 SP Manny Banuelos | 5'10" 205 lbs | Throws: Left | Age 25 Gwinnett Braves (AAA) Acquired: Trade with NYY (2014) 2015 Stats: 7-10, 141.1 IP, 5.48 ERA, 6.08 FIP, 1.74 K/BB, 0.2 WAR (Gwinnett) Banuelos looked solid in spring training but had a rough year in 2015. He could be ready for the show this summer with a strong start to 2016. At the least he could be trade bait come July #7 C Dominic DeRenzo | 6'0" 185 lbs | Bats: Right | Age 19 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted 10th round (284th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: .242/.304/.403/.707 8 HR 29 RBI 4 SB 1.2 WAR I really like DeRenzo. He is a decent defensive catcher and a balanced hitter. He has potential to be a big time double guy & can steal bases too. He had a decent year in 2015 but will be repeating rookie ball again to develop further as a hitter. Excited to see this guy's potential #6 SP Ricardo Sanchez | 5'10" 170 lbs | Throws: Left | Age 19 Atlanta (GCL) Braves (R) Acquired: Trade with LAA (1/5/2015) 2015 Stats: 0-6, 72.1 IP, 6.10 ERA, 4.67 FIP, 2.68 K/BB, 0.3 WAR (Danville) Sanchez is rated the #93 prospect in MLB by Baseball America. He has some good stuff with a fastball that is consitent @ 95 MPH. He really needs to develop some offspeed stuff and after a rough 2015 campaign in Danville he will get bumped to GCL to try and work on some things. Still you can the possibilities with this kid if he can develop a consistent 2nd pitch #5 SP Jason Hursh | 6'0" 195 lbs | Throws: Right | Age 24 Gwinnett (AAA) Acquired: Drafted in 1st round (31st OVR) 2014 2015 Stats: 7-14, 187.0 IP, 4.38 ERA, 3.33 FIP, 1.67 K/BB, 1.4 WAR (Mississippi) I have Hursh higher than both OSA & Bridges but I like this kid. He can throw 96 and has two good offspeed pitches. He already has great control for his place in development & I think after a year in AAA he will be ready to compete for a spot in the rotation in 2017. He had a strong showing in spring training #4 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes | 6'1" 220 lbs | Bats: Right | Age 19 Danville Braves (R) Acquired: Drafted in 4th round (104th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: .287/.418/.517/.936 7 HR 23 RBI (GATL) Bridges absolutely loves Hayes, projecting him to be a hall of fame caliber player. I don't know if he will be that good but he is my kind of hitter. Solid plate discipline, great contact, & great power. He needs work as a defender & still has a long way to go in his development but is off to a great start. #3 LF Alex Verdugo | 6'0" 200 lbs | Bats: Left | Age 19 Rome Braves (A) Acquired: Trade with LAD (07/22/15) 2015 Stats: .248/.335/.343/.678 4 HR 39 RBI 7 SB Alex struggled in A ball last season but all the tools are there. Great contact, plate discipline, & power along with decent speed makes him potentially a very balanced star. His defense needs A LOT of work but he has time to develop. Rome is going to be fun to watch this season with this OF & Verdugo is a guy to keep an eye on #2 SP Chandler Day | 6'3" 165 lbs | Throws: Right | Age 18 Rome Braves (A) Acquired: Drafted in 2nd round (44th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: 3-7, 3.77 ERA, 4.58 FIP, 2.29 K/BB, 0.4 WAR (Danville) Day is young but is already considered the #19 prospect in the MLB. He was the only one of the stud pitching prospects on Danville that avoided injury and pitched all of his starts. He wasn't perfect in his first season but you saw glimpses of what he can be. He can hit 95 & has a total of 4 pitches he is developing. His potential stuff is scary & with time could be an ace on the Braves staff. He will spend all of 2016 in Rome with no rush to move him to Carolina if he needs longer #1 LF Danny Reyes | 6'2" 205 lbs | Bats: Right | Age 19 Rome Braves (A) Acquired: Drafted in 1st round (14th OVR) 2015 2015 Stats: .303/.382/.461/.843 6 HR 24 RBI 3 SB 2.0 WAR (Danville) This is my guy. Bridges & OSA are high on him but not as high as me. He is a great defender, balanced hitter, & base stealer. He had a strong year in rookie ball last season & will be hitting leadoff in Rome 2016. Him, Verdugo, & other popular prospect Jordan Paroubeck make a very formidable OF in Rome for 2016 |

 Series Preview Atlanta (1-2) hits the road for the first time in 2016 to face the Phillies (2-1) for a 3 game series. Philadelphia made the biggest head scratching move of the 2015 offseason by sending off their 31 HR hitting rookie 1B Darrin Ruf to division rival Mets. They did add some pop to the lineup trading for Ike Davis & signing Colby Rasmus, Austin Jackson, & Steve Pearce. Pearce is on the 60 day DL with a torn labrum so the Braves won't have to deal with him. They will have to deal the #69 prospect in the nation SS J.P. Crawford @ the lead off spot who is off to a hot start along with power hitting 3B Maikel Franco who is in his 2nd season in the majors. Atlanta is hoping Jace Peterson & Jose Peraza find their bats this week. Phillies Rock Anderson Braves (1-3) 3 @ Phillies (3-1) 7 Philadelphia, PA - Well that did not go as planned... After a quick 1st inning, Braves starter Brett Anderson hit a wall in the 2nd inning surrendering 6 runs. Crawford & Herrera each drove in 2 on doubles. Anderson was finally lifted for rookie AJ Cole who made his MLB debut by getting Braves out of bases loaded 1 out with 2 strikeouts. If there was a silver lining in this game it was Cole's debut performance. He went 4.1 innings giving up 4 hits, walking 1 & striking out 7. Atlanta was only able to score 3, one coming on a blast by Christian Bethancourt his 2nd of the year. Extra Inning Heroics Lift Braves Braves (2-3) 6 @ Phillies (3-1) 5 (10) Philadelphia, PA - Defense wins championships and one team tonight played elite while the other committed 4 errors. The Braves defense was incredible most of the night allowing rookie Matt Wisler to pitch 5 perfect innings to start the game. Meanwhile the Phillies surrendered 4 unearned runs with the last one being a dagger in the 10th. It was all pitching the first 5 innings. Wisler was perfect while Collmenter was almost as good only surrendering 2 hits. But in the 6th things got interesting. The Braves loaded the bases with singles by Peterson & Bethancourt & Mallex Smith reaching on an error. Domingo Santana launched a flyball to the wall that was caught but brought Bethancourt home. Freddie followed up with another sac fly giving Braves 2 runs. The Phillies struck back with solo HR in the bottom of the 6th by C Tommy Joseph. In the 7th it fell apart for Wisler, a Herrera single & Maikel Franco double set the table for a bases clearing double by Ike Davis. Sean Marshall came in and surrendered a 2 out double pushing score to 4-2. Atlanta struck back in the top of the 8th when Domingo Santana did what manager/GM WeagleWeagle was looking for when they traded for him in spring training and rocked a monster 2 run homer to tie the game. Top of the 9th, it looked like the Braves had come through with the clutch play of the night when Eric Young Jr pinched hit and went deep to push the Braves ahead 5-4, but the Phillies weren't done. Braves closer RJ Alvarez put the first man he faced on base with a walk, then surrendered a single. It looked like he was going to escape the situation when Chase Utley pinch hit & came through with 2 out run tying single. But the Braves finally pushed through in the 10th. Jace singled to start the inning & error moved him to 2nd base then Nick Markakis came through in a big way dropping a single in just behind 2nd base knocking in Peterson giving Atlanta the lead 6-5. Braves Lose On Wild Pitch Braves (2-4) 1 @ Phillies (4-2) 2 Philadelphia, PA - Alex Wood spun another gem for the Braves but once again got saddled with a loss due to poor run support & bullpen help. Wood pitched 6 scoreless innings before working himself into a no out bases loaded jam in the 7th. WeagleWeagle opted to keep him in the game which proved to be a smart play as the Phillies would only get 1 run & Wood would escape with a tie game. Then came the 9th inning. Wood started the 9th off by walking the first batter he faced. RJ Alvarez came on in relief & surrendered a bloop single before getting a flyout & strikeout. The Phillies then brought in Cody Ashe as a PH so to setup the lefty on lefty matchup manager/GM WeagleWeagle called in prized FA signing Sean Marshall. Marshall's 3rd pitch went wide & past Bethancourt bringing the winning run home from 3rd and sending the Braves home with another series loss. Offensively the Braves are struggling. Jace Peterson scored on a Freddie Freeman double but other than that the offense was non existent as Cole Hamels demolished batter after batter. Atlanta will hope to get their first series win in 2016 when they travel to New York to take on the 1B loving Yankees.
