After my GM only run on these forums – and my first real attempt to run a pair of teams as a GM – I've decided to try something a little different. I'm going to start the game in 1980 taking the roles of GM/Manager of the Chicago Cubs. Each update will cover a series, the box scores and a description of what happened in the game. And I'm not doing this with any particular style. Its going to very much follow the same sort of stuff in my GM thread.

As a Manager in this game I'm more of a smallball kind of guy. I like to bunt, I like to hit & run and I'll take one powerguy to put in the 4th spot but aside from that I like contact. I love groundball pitchers. Furthermore I won't have to deal with a manager who refuses to put a Starting Pitcher in the Starting Pitcher role which means I can put guys wherever I want them – and likely save some team cash in the process.

The game begins in 1980 and the Drafts will consist of players from 1982-2014 – at least... I think so. If it turns out I haven't set this up correctly at the end of the season then I'll go ahead and try to fix it. But I double checked it and it seems to be a go. Alternatively if we end up with Fictional Players for a year, then that's fine because I'll eventually get to that point anyway. I will start to intentionally go with Fictional Players beginning in 2010. This means we'll be missing about 6 years of real MLB Players and I want it this way so I can't count on any particular player showing up between 2010-2014. Maybe certain future players who watched the game in the 80s and 90s didn't have their heroes showing up, the one that really made them want to excel and play the game and so they chose a different career path. Create whatever back story you want.

Trading is on Hard.

I can be Fired and that's the only way I would be allowed to change teams.

Lastly, the AL will have the DH – again, if I set it up correctly. I grew up watching the AL and then the Central AL and I've always been against the DH. The 9 guys on the field should be the same 9 that hit.

I'll post an index at the top of this post. After that begins to fill up, I'll provide a link at the top of this post for a second index and so on until this series comes to an end.

Now that I know what I'm doing as far as setting up a game I think this series should last for a while.

I'm here now and have learned a few new things. First, there are a ton of buttons to press around here and it takes some getting used to. Surprisingly none of them are big and red with “Don't Touch” scrawled across them.

Loading up on 1 January 1980 I decided to leave everything as it was. Ticket Prices at $4.20, Development at $1.488M... and Scouting wasn't immediately up so I started that off at $500,000 which I'll likely change next year.

Market Size: Average
Fan Loyalty: Great (how can you not like the Cubs?)
Fan Interest: 64

The Owner is:
Patience: Lenient
Fiscal: Controlling
Involvement: Normal
Priority: Winning

At least he's patient and wants to win which means his involvement should be non-existent.

Owner Wants:
'80 Playoffs
Upgrade 3B from 19th
'81 Increase Profit to +$750k
'82 Reach World Series
'83 Acquire All-Star

Well, my 3B is pretty decent – scroll down – so I'm not going to upgrade. Even his backup isn't half bad. And since I would have to give up a starter to get another starter – since there aren't great prospects – it seems a little silly.

And before I begin my sim I'm going to allow my Assistant GM to handle: Minor League Depth Charts, Minor Promotion/Demotion, & Minor Signing & Releases.

I'll add that I'm not going to play through Spring Training. That stuff is being simmed.

Preseason Record: 12-16

Preseason Predictions: 62-100

And our owner expects me to make the Playoffs?

4 Game Series vs. Mets

As I mentioned in the first post I am mostly a smallball kind of manager however bear in mind that most of our players are slower than salted slugs. The only two players with speed above 36 are SS de Jesus and 3B Randle. I am definitely going to have to reform this team if I expect to play the game the way I like to play it. For the time being we will have to rely on some power – C Foote, 1B Kingman, CF Martin all have 50 or above power – so I'll work with what I have throughout this season. Trades are not impossible but I generally don't do them in my first season unless I see an opportunity or if someone is destructive.

I'll add that you may not see a lot of Stolen Bases from me because when I get the opportunity, the guys don't always choose to run. Instead you'll probably see many more Hit & Runs or Run & Hits.

Game 1

There were plenty of chances for the Cubs to take the game early and often. In the Second inning CF Martin was thrown out at third trying to stretch a triple with two outs. I'm fine with him making this attempt since it was early but looking back I would've liked to have had a chance to score. C Foote isn't a terrible bat and he has power so a hit probably would've driven Martin home whether he was at second or third.

Two innings later CHC SS de Jesus stole second without any outs. 3B Randle struck out and a few pitches later, de Jesus was ultimately stranded on third.

In the 5th CHC had guys on first and third with no outs. C Foote popped up on the infield. 2B Dillard followed-up with an easy double play, stranding two.

The NYM didn't have a whole lot going for them but in an aggressive move Taveras was thrown out attempting to steal third with one out in the sixth inning.

At the end of the ninth inning the score was tied at 0-0 with both starters still in the game. They were doing well.

At the top of the Tenth the NYM brought in their reliever, walking both CF Martin and C Foote back to back without any outs. I decided to Pinch Hit 2B Dillard (the double play man) for 3B Ontiveros which resulted in a hit, loading the bases. My Pitcher was next and I also assigned him a Pinch Hitter, LF Bittner. Bittner was walked and a run came home, 1-0 CHC. Bases are loaded, still 0 outs and we're coming to the top of the order. Three outs in a row. Nobody else scores.

In the bottom of the Tenth I assigned my Closer Smith to come into the game. Likewise 2B Tyson was sent to replace 3B Ontiveros at second and SS Decker was meant to play shortstop. The NYM doubled on the first at bat followed by a walk. A hit continued for the NYM loading the bases with 0 outs. The next two batters, Trevino and Backman were struck out. NYM brought in Hodges to Pinch Hit and he brought them a hit scoring two, ending the game 2-1 in the Tenth inning.

Game 2

The game was mostly quiet until the top of the Third when CHC C Foote swung the bat with a Hit & Run on. A Hit came through and Foote drove in a Run. Guys stood on First and Third with no outs. 1B Kingman came up to the plate an out later and hit a Home Run, raising the score 4-0 CHC.

The NYM found their first hit of the game in the bottom of the Fourth. The Mets put guys on the corners but grounded out to end the inning.

At the top of the Fifth 1B Kingman struck a double with two outs. RF Vail helped to bring him home with a single, 5-0 CHC.

In the bottom of the Fifth the Mets were able to drive home a run in a sacrifice fly, 5-1 CHC.

By the bottom of the 7th our SP Krukow was over 100 pitches. Time to take him out?

SP Krukow allowed another Met run by the end of the inning, 5-2 CHC.

Bottom of the Eighth I brought in RP Tudrow to help close out the game. Another Met Sacrifice Fly was allowed, bringing the Mets closer, 5-3 CHC.

In the Bottom of the Ninth I brought in RP Sutter to close out the game. After another RBI he did just that, gaining the save in a 5-4 CHC win.

Game 3

At the bottom of the Second the Mets managed to load the bases without any outs however CHC SP McGlothen managed to escape the inning with a mere sacrifice fly, 1-0 NYM. A little too close for comfort here.

The NYM offense continued the following inning when they scored another RBI with two-thirds of the bases loaded, 2-0 NYM. Additionally NYM Steven Henderson injured himself and he was yanked out of the game.

However at the top of the Fourth I was able to make some inroads when C Foote hit a double, moving over to third after a wild pitch with 0 outs. 1B Kingman followed this up with a sacrifice fly, 2-1 NYM but the offense for the inning had ended.

The Met RBI train continued in the bottom of the Fourth, raising the NYM lead to 3-1.

A pair of innings later and CHC 2B Tyson committed an error, giving the Mets runners on First and Second with no outs. These runners would move to Second and Third after a ground out followed by a Sacrifice Fly, 4-1 NYM.

In the 7th and 8th Innings I brought in RP Capilla followed by RP Caudill but it wouldn't amount to anything. The Loss had already been handed to the Cubs, 4-1.

In other news, 3 Shutouts were pitched by single pitchers around the league. In continuing a few series ahead I found Shutouts occurring with regularity so I'm not going to mention them from here on out.

Game 4

The top of the First 3B Randle started me off right with a Triple. But LF Buckner popped out in the infield and 1B Kingman struck out. I wasn't happy with how the inning ended but you never know, its baseball.

When the Mets found themselves in the same situation in the bottom of the Third – a man on third – they were able to secure a hit, bringing in a Run, 1-0 NYM.

In the next half inning LF Buckner came out hitting a Triple with 1 Out. 1B Kingman was walked which brought RF Vail up to bat. Striking a line drive he drove home Buckner, advancing the runners to Second and Third. A Fly Out followed and C Foote ground out to end the inning, 1-1 Tied.

Periodic hits were struck through the next six innings but there wasn't anything of important note.

At the top of the 10th, 2B Dillard struck a single with no outs. I kept the pitcher in the game so he could bunt – my pitchers are the only ones I trust to bunt and this one was a 98 for sacrifice bunts – but he bunted into a Double Play. It wasn't popped up either. The bunt got down and for the first time since I've been playing this game I saw a Double Play come from a bunt.

The bottom of the 10th the Mets singled to reach First with no outs. The runner advanced to Third, the Mets losing two outs in order to do it. I intentionally walked the #4 and #5 hitters to load the bases which brought up NYM Trevino. He flew out and extra innings continued, 1-1.

With the top of the 11th coming 3B Randle was up to bat, hitting for a Single with 0 outs. With LF Buckner up to bat I put on the H&R. Buckner was thrown out but Randle made it safely to Second. 1B Kingman was again walked which put guys on First and Second, bringing RF Vail up to bat. Vail hit the ball up the middle bringing in Randle for an RBI. Runners were set on both First and Second but nobody else would come home, 2-1 CHC.

In the bottom of the 11th I decided to make all the defensive changes that improved my defense. I also brought in my Closer Smith. In five pitches the game was over in a 2-1 CHC win.

***

Two wins? 58 more to go to beat the Preseason Prediction. I'm content starting off .500 even though the owner does want the Cubs to reach the Playoffs somehow. Additionally I did some research to find out exactly what the Cubs record was in 1980 and it wasn't good. As long as I can get through this season, and hopefully keep my job, I'll feel more comfortable with a team that I can more personally construct next year.

Game 1

The first game started dangerously enough with a Pittsburgh two base lead off with no outs. Fortunately I was able to catch the guy trying to steal third, taking out the next two batters.

Silence mostly consumed the field until the top of the Fifth when Pittsburgh had runners at the corners with one out. Again SP Munoz took it to the batters, forcing Fly Outs for the next two would-be hitters.

At the top of the Ninth 1B Kingman found himself on second without any outs. After a ground out and no advance CF Martin was intentionally walked which brought up C Foote. Foote gained a Hit and an RBI, scoring the first run of the game, 1-0 CHC. Guys were on First and Third... then the bases were loaded, again 1 out. 3B Ontiveros came in for RP Hernandez and flew out. Another out followed but I was able to put 1 up on the board.

Bottom of the Ninth I brought in CL Smith who allowed a base hit after an out. After Pittsburgh grounded out into a double play I took the victory, 1-0 CHC.

In between Game 1 and Game 2 Baltimore extended CF Al Bumby 32 Years 61-17-50-57 @ $612k/2 YR

Game 2

A third of the way through the game I was able to put together a little smallball fun. With a man on First and one out, I put the Hit & Run on for SS de Jesus who hit, putting men on First and Second. LF Buckner followed up with another hit which brought in two RBIs, placing men on Second and Third and 1B Kingman in the batter's box. A Home Run later and I was up 5-0, CHC. The inning continued lucratively with RF Vail jumping onto Second. CF Martin drove him home after hitting a Double. The inning ended shortly after Martin's adventure but it ended with a CHC lead of 6-0.

A rain delay ensued for 48 minutes in the bottom of the Third. It didn't seem to have much effect on either of our Starting Pitchers.

The game remained tame until the bottom of the Seventh when Pittsburgh knocked out a Home Run. Luckily, no one was on base, 6-1 CHC.

In the bottom of the Ninth 1B Kingman offered a comeback for Pittsburgh after committing an error at First. However I brought in RP Tidrow after the error placed Pittsburgh's men on the corners and Tidrow was able to force a Double Play, securing a 6-1 win for the Cubs.

We're back and playing the second series against the New York Mets. I've already developed the perfect strategy: Win more games than the other teams and we should be fine. I do worry about being fired at the end of the season because I doubt I'll upgrade at 3B and a playoff run seems incredibly unlikely. But we'll trudge on and try to do at least a little better than the .395 record the Cubs had in 1980.

***

Game 1

The First inning was frightening when the Mets landed a man on Third with one out. Luckily SP Krukow was able to Fly Out the next batter, ending the inning with a nice, safe Strike Out.

In the bottom of the First I had a chance to retaliate after a NYM error put a man on First without any outs. 2B Decker came up next hitting a surprising Double, planting runners on Second and Third. LF Buckner hit into the hole, driving in a Run and landing runners at the corners. RF Vail followed this with a Hit of his own and adding to the RBI story. With runners on First and Second the following two batters Struck Out ending the inning, 2-0 CHC.

At the top of the Second a Met found himself on First without any outs. The next batter ran into a Double Play. Have I mentioned how much I love Groundball Pitchers? That isn't to say I won't have Flyball or Neutral Pitchers on my staff but I will keep a careful eye out for the groundballers. The inning ended in a Strike Out.

In the second half of the Second inning I had another serious hitting streak put together. After two outs were posted, C Foote Doubled. 2B Decker followed up with another hit as LF Buckner continued the ride, giving the Cubs another Run, 3-0 CHC. 1B Kingman did the same and RF Vail refused to be shut out of the party, 5-0 CHC.

With the Mets back in the box at the top of the Third they put men on First and Second with the aid of an error and a passed ball. With two outs up, NYM Mazzilli hit a Triple, driving home two Runs but that would be the end of the inning in New York, 5-2 CHC.

Things became scary again in the top of the Fifth when SP Krukow put men on First and Second with Two Outs – both men had been walked. After a mound visit, he decided to also walk the third man, Loading the Bases. A Fly Out ended the potentially fatal inning.

The scoring ended in the bottom of the Sixth after LF Buckner hit a Home Run, extending the Cubs lead to 6-2. Victory followed three innings later.

Before the start of Game 2 I noticed RP Sutter was complaining about not being a Closer. I had suspected this would happen but I didn't expect it to happen so quick. To cool the environment I decided to move CL Smith back to a Relief Pitcher and move Sutter to the Closer position.

Game 2

As with the last, this game began with a busy First inning. Frankly, I was lucky to get out of it with only Two Runs scored by the NYM after an error and 34 Pitches were thrown.

I was able to cut the Met lead in half with the aid of a Balk in the bottom of the Second, 2-1 NYM.

At the top of the Fifth the Mets extended their lead, 3-1 after an RBI Double. Given the weaknesses of my team I no longer had much hope but I'll still try. I'll add here as well that I won't sim a single inning through this entire process. If I can make a come back – here or in the future – or if something great happens, I want to be able to explain why. Close games are interesting but so is everything else.

I was able to find my retribution an inning later when 1B Kingman hit a Home Run with a man on base. The score had been tied 3-3. Now if only I can get a Home Run whenever I need it in the future that would be great.

Top of the Seventh the Mets returned, getting a Triple with one out. I brought in RP Smith since he was a groundball man and walked the next batter. The hitter stole on RP Smith and the batter a pitch later went for a Sacrifice Fly, 4-3 NYM. I was able to get out of the inning with minimal damage.

I wasn't able to make another serious attempt to come back again until the bottom of the Ninth. RF Vail reached First on an error with 0 outs. With the aid of a Hit & Run he made it to Second with 1 out. Vail would ultimately be stranded on Second as the bottom of the Cubs order came up. A NYM victory came at 4-3.

Game 3

The last game of the series began the same way Game 2 had. With a 2-0 NYM lead at the end of the First inning. It could have been much worse with bases loaded and One out but I was able to put a cap on that with a Double Play.

SP Lamp continued his scary role in the Fourth when granting two Walks in a row without any outs. The error that followed and loaded the bases right after didn't seem to help matters. And the Walk immediately after that brought the Mets another run, 3-0 NYM. After another Walk I decided to bring in RP Hernandez. By the end of the inning the score had reached 7-0 NYM.

I did find my first hit however in the bottom of the Fourth. And with the aid of CF Martin I was able to bring that hitter home, 7-1 NYM.

In the bottom of the Fifth the NYM Pitchers struck out the side.

Come the bottom of the Seventh RF Vail hit a Home Run with no outs, 7-2 NYM. But this would be my last run of the game.

At the top of the Ninth I decided to bring in a weak pitcher just to end the game in RP Caudill. He allowed Two Walks, Two Hits, Two Runs and Struck Out Three.

Hello baseball fans!

Its infectious.

Game 1

The first Game of the series against St. Louis began terrible when STL started off the inning with a run.

But 1B Kingman was able to come back in the bottom of the Second, hitting a Home Run. SP Reuschel also hit, chasing in an RBI giving the Cubs the lead, 2-1.

In the top of the Fourth after a few hits and a walk, St. Louis tied the game again, 2-2.

Four innings later St. Louis hit a Home Run, taking the lead once more, 3-2.

In spite of efforts made throughout the bottom of the Ninth not much could be done to change the score.

Game 2

The beginning of the second game repeated the first. After men placed on Second and Third, St. Louis was able to drive one home, 2-0 STL. Luckily Ground Outs ruled the bulk of the inning and damage was kept small.

Bottom of the Third LF Buckner drove home two guys giving me the lead, 2-1. 1B Kingman followed up with another Home Run, 3-2 CHC.

Unfortunately in the next half inning St. Louis hit a triple, driving the runner home with the next batter, 3-3.

In the bottom of the Fourth I had guys on First and Second with one out. SS de Jesus was walked loading the bases. 3B Randle was walked with bases loaded, 4-3 CHC. LF Buckner came up with a Sacrifice Fly which I'll happily take, 5-3. 1B Kingman did the second thing he does best and Struck Out.

Not to be outdone, STL tied it up again in the top of the Fifth, 5-5. You know its going to be a rough inning when you Pitch Out, the Catcher throws without fumbling the ball and the guy still steals Second.

Two innings later STL put a guy on Second with two outs. They were able to drive him home, 6-5 STL.

In spite of our best efforts a loss followed again, 7-5.

Gazziza my Dilsoofus!

Initially when I started this I wasn't sure if I would like taking on a management role. Offline I was toying around with a 1915 Cleveland Indians Manager-Only Run and I played that in some down time or on slow nights and that got me through. I also worried that I would get bored and begin issuing trades. As you can see, so far so good. But this series is more fun than I thought it would be. Obviously playing the game is more fun than writing it up, especially while I'm adjusting and trying to figure out what are the best notes to take for myself. Again, I'm not investing high hopes in this year given how history had played out but as far as playing with a team that did terribly in this year, its entertaining making an attempt to stay competitive.

Game 1

Pittsburgh made the first mark in the game in the bottom of the Second, hitting a single Home Run, 1-0 PIT.

Bottom of the Fourth I started out as I had ended the bottom of the Third, with men on First and Second with one out. However, a few alterations were made after C Foote flew out, advancing a runner to Third. 2B Dillard hit for a single, driving in that run, 1-1. With guys on First and Second again, now with two outs, my Pitcher McGlothen came up, hitting a Double, bringing in both men on base, 3-1 CHC. SS de Jesus struck one more hit for the inning which brought in McGlothen and giving me a comfortable lead, 4-1.

I will say that I'm always tempted to take out the Pitcher when I have guys this close to scoring, especially with two outs. But it was only the bottom of the Fourth and SP McGlothen was pitching a fine game so far so I was willing to risk it after the game was tied up. The risk worked and ultimately resulted in a 4-2 CHC win.

Game 2

Postponed due to rain.

Game 2 (Double Header Today!)

I always like playing Double Headers, managing the pitching and keeping a close eye on who I'm using and who might be available not only for the second game, but for the next day. Love these things.

The first two innings began terribly. Pittsburgh repeated Game 1's performance, hitting a Home Run early followed by a RBI single in the Second. Luckily SP Reuschel struck out two in a row, stranding their guy on Third.

But their hit parade continued in the next inning, 4-0 PIT.

Smallball was working overtime for PIT as they batted that ball around in the Fifth, 5-0 PIT.

By the Sixth I decided to put in RP Capilla since he's one of my worst relievers when looking at the numbers. He was put in to eat up some innings in a lost game.

RF Vail was able to hit for a RBI in the bottom of the Sixth and another score came in the Seventh. A comeback was proving possible yet unlikely, 6-2 PIT.

With a Chicago man on Second, C Blackwell struck the ball, bringing him in and closing the gap, 6-3 PIT.

In the top of the Ninth Pittsburgh put guys on Second and Third with an out. With a hit they brought one of their boys home. My reliever, RP Caudill walked the next man loading the bases with one out. I stopped taking their stats for the rest of the inning

I'm usually trying to win games even when it seems impossible which is why I put in 2B Decker for RP Caudill. Surprisingly he managed a hit and the man behind him, SS de Jesus was walked. With me on First and Second LF Buckner came up to bat. I was fully expecting him to ground into a Double Play but he was able to pull out a hit, loading the bases. 1B Kingman strode up to bat and tossed that ball over the fence for a Grand Slam, 10-7 PIT.

Unfortunately the rally died there as both RF Vail and CF Martin Flew Out to end the game.

At least their stats look pretty.

Game 3

In the second game of the Double Header Pittsburgh kept themselves alive, again jumping out ahead early in the First with a RBI, 1-0 PIT.

My pitchers continued to find themselves in an out of trouble when in the top of the Second PIT placed guys on First and Third. And as luck would have it two Strike Outs followed. My Pitching is scary and is going to have to be addressed at some point.

To make up for lost opportunities, Pittsburgh again had guys on First and Third the next inning. With two outs they were able to bring a few more home, 4-0 PIT.

By the bottom of the Sixth I had one hit... just to give you an idea of the kind of bats my guys were swinging. Its one of those games where you're pressing 1 over and over again

After advancing due to an error – with a Cub already on Second – I was able to score my first run, 4-1 PIT. But Ground Outs would dictate the rest of the inning.

I made another attempt to come back in the Eighth when LF Buckner hit and drove in a man on First, 4-2.

By the bottom of the Ninth the score refused to change. RF Vail put himself on Second with no outs. C Blackwell followed with a Hit after CF Martin struck out. Men were sitting on First and Third, 1 out. 2B Tyson struck a Sacrifice Fly, 4-3 PIT. It wasn't my preferred method of scoring at this point but there's still one left. I replaced C Blackwell for a speedier Decker. This, by the way, meant I wouldn't have anyone capable of playing Catcher but tying the game is more important. But this would prove useless as Henderson – PH for the Pitcher – flew out,. 4-3 PIT.

Before the start of this series I decided to exchange 2B Dillard for 2B Tyson and in the lineup placed C Blackwell in for C Foote since Foote was beginning to get cold. Both of their contact is about the same, Blackwell's eye is better by about 20 but his defense and power is about 20 worse. Power isn't everything on this team but both guys run like Catchers anyway.

Game 1

At the top of the Fourth the St. Louis Starting Pitcher was injured and had to be taken out of the game. Since I hadn't had a hit yet in the game I was hoping this would change things. Unfortunately it was silent for most of the night for the Cubs.

In the bottom of the 7th STL struck a Home Run, gaining the first run in the game, 1-0.

I couldn't do anything the rest of the game. After all, my first hit came in the 9th inning.

Game 2

STL scored again in the first inning, 1-0 STL.

I was able to bring some hope to Chicago after loading up the bases with one out in the 2nd. Unfortunately both 2B Tyson and SP Munoz couldn't push any of the runners home. I'm always tempted to Pinch Hit the Pitcher in any situation but this is too early.

Things began getting out of hand in the bottom of the Third when hits and a Home Run bled into a 6-0 STL lead. With no men out and one on Second, Tidrow forced three Fly Outs, allowing one Hit to end the inning.

An effort to scratch back into the game was made through the rest of the innings but the game would be lost, 8-5.

Game 3

The beginning of Game 3 began almost as dangerously as the last. SP McGlothen put a Cardinal on Third with one out. Luckily he deftly escaped with two Strike Outs in a row.

As with the past games, the Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the Fifth with a Home Run, 1-0 STL.

After an out in the top of the 6th, 3B Randle hit a Double. LF Buckner followed with another hit, driving in the run, 1-1. After an intentional walk with 1B Kingman, men were put on First and Third. RF Vail repeated Buckner's feats, Hitting and driving in a Run, 2-1 CHC. CF Martin followed up with a Strike Out, C Blackwell walked and 2B Tyson Flew Out. At least we have the lead for the first time in this series.

The lead, however, would be short-lived when STL came up in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game, 2-2.

In the seesaw battle the Cubs returned after an hour long rain delay in the top of the 8th. With Two Outs and men on First and Second, 2B Tyson reached base after a St. Louis error. Biittner came in for the Pitcher and hit, creating two RBI's, 4-2 CHC. SS de Jesus Flew Out to end the inning.

To help stabilize the game I brought in RP Hernandez – who I'll likely use in close games – in the bottom of the 8th.

Continuing in the top of the 9th I made another attempt to score after putting guys on the corners. But my outfielders, RF Vail and CF Martin Struck Out and Ground out.

In the bottom of the 9th CL Sutter was brought in, winning the game 4-2 CHC.

I've been away from the computer for about 3 months and I've come back to my game completely forgetting what I was doing. In an effort to remember, I'm going to be updating here a little more often and I'll get it sorted as I reorganize my notes. So we're back here with the Cubs!

I'll add that I haven't been able to play any of this game while I was away so if we get to a point where you see a losing streak, that's probably the point within the game that I returned.

Game 1

The Reds struck first with a 1 Run Home Run in the bottom of the third. Luckily Kingman tied it back up, hitting it over the same fence in the next half inning, 1-1.

In the bottom of the 5th the Reds put men on the corners without any outs. Fortunately they were able to bring home only one of the runners, 2-1 CIN.

At the top of the 6th the meat of my order struck out. The following inning a minor rally was put together as Blackwell put himself on Second with 1 Out. Tyson followed up with a Hit, driving in Blackwell, 2-2. I applied the sacrificial bunt for Reuschel which put Tyson on Third, bringing de Jesus up to bat. De Jesus connected for a hit and an additional RBI for the Cubs in the inning, 3-2 CHC.

Ending the game I brought in CL Sutter, winning 3-2.

Game 2

As in the first game Cincinnati gained the first run of the game in the bottom of the 4th after a Wild Pitch, 1-0 CIN.

CIN continued battering my pitcher in the next inning, raising their lead, 4-0 CIN.

There wasn't much more I could do as the game remained uneventful. 4-0 CIN win.

Game 3 – Beginning of Double Header

For the first time in the series at the top of the First the Cubs gained the lead first with a Kingman RBI, 1-0 CHC. With men on First and Third, Vail Flew Out. Blackwell came up next and was walked, loading the bases. Martin Flew Out to end the inning. 1-0 CHC.

In the bottom of the Second CIN hit a Home Run with 0 Outs, 2-1 CIN. This lead was extended by one in the next inning after CIN put men on First and Third with 0 Outs, 3-1 CIN.

The top of the 7th began as successfully as the First with men on First and Second in back to back walks with 0 Outs. With the Hit and Run on, de Jesus drove in a man and advanced another to Third, 3-2 CIN. Up next, Randle struck a Sacrifice Fly, 3-3. Buckner and Kingman both Flew Out to end the inning.

I tried to make a few moves in the Eighth inning but after getting guys on First and Second, I couldn't advance them.

Top of the 9th de Jesus put himself on Second with 0 Outs. After Randle Flew Out, Buckner Hit and de Jesus flew around Third being thrown out at Home. I honestly don't remember if I sent him – its been almost 3 months – or if he went on his own. Either way, this thing is going into Extra Innings.

The Cubs bats continued to swing in the Top of the 10th as men were put on First and Second with 0 Outs. With the Hit and Run on, Dillard reached First, sending one man to Third and the other Home, 4-3 CHC. The next hitter missed the bunt twice so the third time I had him hit. Which he did! 5-3 CHC and men on First and Second, 0 Outs. De Jesus grounded a ball, moving a runner to Third. Randle repeated the effort by de Jesus and ground out but drove in the Run on Third, 6-3 CHC.

CL Sutter closed out the game in the bottom of the 10th. 6-3 CHC

Game 4 – Second Game of Double Header

Scary First inning. CIN loaded the bases using a single Out but the Cubs were able to escape after a Fly Out and Ground Out repeated one another, stranding the runners.

CIN rectified the miscues in the First by showing up in the Third and putting men on the corners with 0 Outs. A Sacrifice Fly brought one of the men home, 1-0 CIN. A Hit followed, men on First and Third. A few more hits and RBIs later and CIN was up, 4-0. I brought in RP Tidrow at this point who ended the inning with a Double Play.

I attempted a comeback in the Top of the Fourth after a HR by Kingman, 4-2 CHC.

CIN came back a half-inning later and stretched the lead by two more again, 6-2 CIN.

The battle of the bats were never-ending as the Top of the Fifth Tyson reached Second with 1 Out. I Pinch Hit my Pitcher with Bittner who grounded out but moved Tyson to Third. De Jesus, that beautiful man, Hit and brought home a Run, 6-3 CIN.

The next half inning CIN brought in another run, 7-3 CIN.

A half inning later – again? - at the Top of the 6th Buckner put himself on Second with 0 Outs. With an error – I believe since I put an E next to his name – Kingman reached First and moved Buckner to Third. Vail came up to bat and with a Hit and Run on he brought home a Run, moving Kingman to Third, 7-4 CIN. Martin came up next with a Sacrifice Fly, 7-5 CIN. The rally is real! Its also short. While Blackwell connected for a Hit, both Tyson and PH Ontiveros put themselves out.

Bottom of the 6th I brought in RP Caudill. The game is within reach and I'm hoping I can get there.

Top of the 7th with men on Second and Third, Kingman Struck Out. But Vail was there to bail him out, bringing home a Run, 7-6 CIN.

There was still some time left in the Top of the 9th with Cubs on First and Third, 2 Outs. But unfortunately I couldn't bring another run home after a Fly Out by Martin, the game ending 7-6 CIN.

Vail hit 5 for 5 tying NL Regular Season Record for Hits in a Game.

Game 1

The game was relatively quiet until the Bottom of the 6th when de Jesus put himself on First. Randle came up to bat and with a Hit and Run on successfully put himself on First and moving de Jesus to Third. Buckner struck the ball and with the help of an error, a Cub came home. 1-0 CHC A little later in the inning the bases were loaded with a single out when Vail came up to the plate, driving in another run, 2-0 CHC.

By the 9th I made a few defensive changes to secure the lead and the victory, 2-0 CHC.

SP McGlothen received a shut out. There were 3 other Shut Outs that day.

After the game I took a closer look at the team. SP Munoz was upset with the disruptive influences on the team – so was just about everyone else – but Munoz seemed to be the only disruptive player. Its time to deal him.

Trade With Baltimore

Give
SP Munoz, RP Caudill and SS Decker

Receive:
1B Terry Crowley 48-53-58-42 6 Speed
SS Greg Webb 18 Years ½ of 3 ½ 16-1-1-34 66 Speed
CF Alexy Moreau 20 Years ½ of 1 2-6-22-66 81 Speed
$25,000

Webb and Moreau have a long way to go as far as development goes but I'm more than happy to unload a volatile player. And I get an okay guy in Crowley plus a little bit of cash. If those minor league guys develop then that's a bonus.

After the trade I received a message telling me that the club secretly appreciated cutting ties with SP Munoz. So I was correct.

With extra space on my Active Roster I brought up:
SP Carlos Mendez 25 Years 28-49-48-86
RP Dean 'William the Red' Isley 24 Years 1 of 1 35-57-47-20

I also moved around a few guys on the field since I have Crowley.
1B Kingman now plays LF
LF Buckner now plays CF
CF Martin won't be happy but he's cold and not doing great anyway. I'll add that Buckner can't play CF

Kingman's ability at LF is 38.

New Lineup

Game 2

The game began early with de Jesus getting on base and Randle driving him home with a Sacrifice Fly, 1-0 CHC

The Bottom of the 4th Kingman extended the lead with a Solo HR, 2-0 CHC

In the Bottom of the 5th the Cubs shared a trio of runs, raising the score 5-0 CHC

San Diego's efforts proved useless against Reuschel who pitched a complete game shutout.

Game 3

Game 3 started off poorly. With the bases loaded and one out both Crowley and Vail hit Fly Outs. I made another effort in the Second Inning but faired no better.

The game remained scoreless until the 6th when SD Hit with a man on Second, bringing him home 1-0 SD. After another out and putting some men on base SD scored once more before the end of the inning 2-0 SD

In the 7th I exchanged my Pitcher for Ontiveros who Doubled with 2 Outs. De Jesus stepped up with the Hit and Run on, bringing Ontiveros to score 2-1 SD

The 8th went very badly for me when I brought in RP Smith when he immediately put men on the corners without any outs. By the time the score had climbed to 5-1 SD I brought in RP Capilla. Capilla gave up one more until ending the inning. And honestly, I was going to leave Capilla out there as long as it took. I don't like to burn up my bullpen on longshots.

In the 9th I began making a comeback when both Blackwell and Biitner – Biitner PH for Dillard – on Third and First. With the Pitcher up next I sat him down, having Martin hit in his place. And hit he did. He also brought in a Run, 6-2 SD. With de Jesus up I put the Hit and Run on which he successfully accomplished. Men were on Second and Third with 1 Out. Randle continued the stroke of good fortune with a Hit and an RBI. Men were on First and Third with 1 Out. Buckner came up adding one more 6-4 SD. The effort ended there.

After some consideration I've decided to change these updates a little. Since it often feels like I'm rewriting the same game two or three times per post, instead now I'm going to write one game in the series which seemed to define the series - after this update. This will give less detail but updates will hopefully come more often... and with faster updates, I should be able to keep up with my gameplay.

***

Game 1

Game 2

Game 3

After the first two games split with blowouts on both sides I was ready to settle this series. My relievers were having a hard time and needed their rest.

SF began the game in what seemed like would be another high scoring match when scoring and planting runners on the corners with one out. Luckily SP McGlothen was able to hold the runners and keep the SF offense to scoring only one run, 1-0 SF.

In the bottom of the 2nd with runners on Second and Third, C Foote hit a sacrifice fly, tying the game between us. SP McGlothen helped himself out with a hit, putting runners on First and Third but two outs remained. Proving his worth, SS de Jesus slapped in a run as Tyson ended the inning with a Strike Out, 2-1 CHC.

Two innings later, in the bottom of 4th the Cubs had the bases loaded with two outs. 1B Kingman struck the ball, bringing in two more runs, 4-1 CHC. Crowley finished the inning by Grounding Out.

SP McGlothen allowed a Home Run in the Top of the 5th with no outs but he was able to restrain the Giants for the rest of the inning, 4-2 CHC.

At the top of the 7th SP McGlothen allowed a pair of RBIs on two different hits, tying the game. I wanted to keep him in because he was due to hit third in the bottom of the 7th and because he still had some stamina. A tie game isn't the worst of all worlds.

The Pinch Hitter, Biitner for McGlothen, did nothing.

RP Hernandez came in for relief in the top of the 8th, RP Tidrow in the 9th and RP Sutter in the 10th.

I left RP Sutter in starting in the Top of the 13th since he was able to keep his pitch count low. And the loss wasn't his fault as the inning began on an error, allowing a Giant runner to reach Second without any outs. After a Fly Out the runner stole Third setting the Giants up for a successful Squeeze Play, 5-4 SF.

Or maybe not.

Game 1

The First inning began doubly disappointing for both teams. After SS de Jesus hit a double without any outs the team refused to advance him home. At the same time the Dodgers placed men on First and Second with one out. After a Fly Out they Hit into the field where OF Biitner threw their man out at home. I was surprised since I don't see this happen so often. At least not with these outfield arms.

But LA would make up for this the next inning after an error put one of their men on Third with one out. A Hit followed which brought the run home, giving the Dodgers the lead 1-0. After a Strike Out LA smashed another Hit and again they were thrown out trying to go home, this time by Kingman.

In the bottom of the Third my fielders committed two errors which allowed men on First and Second without any Outs. After a Fly Out advanced both runners by a base, the next at bat permitted another error increasing the score, 2-0 LAD.

I'd find some solace in the next half inning when I loaded the bases without any outs after a hit by Kingman. Crowley Ground Out but the sacrifice brought home a run, halving the lead 2-1 LAD. Vail's Strike Out and Dillard's Fly Out ended the inning with bases still loaded.

At the top of the Fifth I was feeling better about things with a man on Second with one out. A hit by de Jesus brought home the run, tying the game at 2. De Jesus moved from First to Third with a Hit by Randle however a Buckner Fly Out and a Strike Out from Kingman ended the inning early.

SP Reuschel had already given up 8 hits and wasn't looking great - as noted by the two men thrown out at home the game could be much worse if not for some lucky arms - so I brought in RP Isley to replace him. With Two Outs and men on First and Second he allowed a hit, planting runners on each bag. Then CF Smith came up hitting a Grand Slam against RP Isley 6-2 LAD. Isley was replaced shortly after but the damage had been done.

A brief attempt was made to come back in the top of the Seventh after Buckner drove in a Run, 6-3 LAD. But with Kingman on base, Crowley managed to hit into a Double Play ending the last real chance we had to score. 6-3 LAD.

Game 1

Game 2

Game 3

I think its law that Chicago has to lose by a blow out at least once per series.

The First inning started the game well for the Cubs with a man on Second and a Single Out. Buckner drove in the first run of the game giving the lead to the Cubs, 1-0 CHC. Kingman followed this up with an RBI of his own, 2-0 CHC. With a Hit by Crowley the men were on First and Third but a Strike Out by Vail and a Ground Out by Dillard killed the effort. I'm beginning to notice a pattern with these two.

At the top of the Second and a guy on First with Two Outs I Stole Second and combined with an Error the runner speed to Third. Randle was up next and would've been out if the Padres hadn't committed yet another error, allowing the Run, 3-0 CHC.

In the bottom of the Sixth the Padres slammed their First Hit, taking two with 0 Outs. After an Error on my side, the Padres brought home the Run, 3-1 CHC. A few batters later San Diego had guys on First and Third with One Out. SP Krukow seemed to have lost what he had so I replaced him with RP Smith. The man on First Stole Second as C Foote couldn't find a handle on the ball. With the force out no longer a possibility I had to pitch to the guy as I didn't want to load the bases. Not this early. RP Smith allowed a pair of hits which brought home more than a pair of Runs, 4-3 SD. Still with only One Out I decided to leave RP Smith in there to clean up his mess. And who else was I going to bring in? Isley who naturally allows games to be blown open? Or CL Sutter who I might need tomorrow? RP Smith was going to stay right where he was. Unfortunately he allowed one more Run before the inning ended, 5-3 SD.

I made some attempts in the top of the Ninth to come back, changing Dillard out with Ontiveros but the attempted good fortune Ontiveros tried to bring was ended with a Ground Out Double Play coming at the end of C Foote's bat. Biitner replaced the Pitcher, Flying Out to end the game, 5-3 SD

Trades? We need 'em.

Our record isn't necessarily terrible considering what is expected of us however I don't want to trudge through the entire season grounding out into double plays, committing errors and getting blown out every third or fourth game.

I went through the list and Montreal was willing. I know the taboo about trading within your division but if I can get the better end of the deal then I'm going to do what I can to make it happen. Sure it may strengthen a rival but if I can come out on the better end – possibly – then I'm willing to do it.

Initially I was looking to trade LF Buckner but I couldn't shake the guy. Since CF Martin wasn't much better and because the Expos were more interested in him, I decided to deal him.

Trade With Montreal

(Portraits at the bottom of the post)

Give
CF Jerry Martin
mRHP Miguel Romano

Receive
LF Ron LeFlore
m1B Pablo Valera

$50,000

CF Martin 31 Years Old 38-53-33-0 (Montreal moved him to First otherwise he's a low 20's CF)
1 ½ of 1 ½ Potential
He's a Free Agent after this year.
High: Work Ethic
Low: Desire To Win, Greed and Intelligence
Speed: 35

Minor League RP Miguel Romano 23 Years Old 28-32-34-50
½ of ½ Potential
Introverted Personality
Very High: Desire To Win and Greed
Very Low: Leadership

LF Ron LeFlore 31 Years Old 46-12-47-43 (Only Plays LF)
1 ½ of 1 ½ Potential
He's a Free Agent after this year.
Considered a team leader and gets along with everyone.
High: Leadership, Loyalty, Greed and Work Ethic
Low: Intelligence
Speed: 98
Base Running: 98
Stealing: 99

Minor League 1B Pablo Valera 23 Years Old 28-8-22-66
1 of 3 Potential
Dominican Republic
Clubhouse Leadership
Very High: Intelligence
High: Leadership, Loyalty and Work Ethic
Low: Desire To Win
Speed: 100
Base Running: 91
Stealing: 91

I really like this trade. We took on some cash, picked up a future First Baseman if he fulfills his potential and we stole a pair of speedy guys from the Expos. We also have some clubhouse leaders as well. In turn Montreal gets a Centerfielder – if they ever play him there – who has some strength to get Home Runs but beyond that I'm not sure what they're expecting to get from the guy.

After the trade I also made a move on my own roster.

I moved 2B Dillard down to the minors, bringing up 2B Al Gross in his place.

2B Al Gross 22 Years Old 40-1-34-80
1 of 1 Potential
Speed: 74
Base Running: 89
Stealing: 86
High: Leadership, Loyalty and Greed

And I put LF LeFlore in Center Field. He can't play there but neither can Buckner.

You'll also notice if you look close that I made the trade halfway through a Series which I'll post tomorrow.

The trade above was conducted after Game 1 of this series. And for no other reason than to introduce new guys, we'll cover Game 2.

Game 1

Game 2

In the First inning with Two Outs, SS de Jesus hit himself onto First. Kingman obediently followed up with another Hit, driving in a Run, 1-0 CHC. Crowley flew out to end the inning.

The game remained uneventful for another five innings until 2B Gross Stole Second with 1 Out. De Jesus helped him along with a hit, planting both runners at the corners. Kingman repeated the First inning as he drove in another Run, 2-0 CHC. Crowley Ground Out, finalizing the inning.

In the bottom of the Seventh SF put a man on Second with a Stolen Base. With Two Outs left in the inning SF brought that man home, 2-1 CHC. Refusing to let it end SF sent the ball over the wall bringing two more home, 3-2 SF.

At the top of the Eighth I PH my Pitcher with Buckner, generating a Single with no Outs. CF LeFlore walked setting the Cubs up for a hopeful inning with men on First and Second, 0 Outs. After a sacrifice bunt by Gross the runners each advanced a base. However both de Jesus and Kingman Flew Out leaving a 0 on the scoreboard.

The Giants would do no such thing as they hit a Home Run off of RP Hernandez, 4-2 SF. After getting himself into some trouble I called for RP Smith who was able to end the inning on a pair of Ground Outs. 4-2 SF

I was still interested in moving things around. I like to trade and draft in these games, especially when I have a bad team. That was the inspiration in my trade with the Pirates.

Trade With Pittsburgh
(Portraits at the bottom of the post)

Give
LF Larry Biittner

Receive
SP Eddie “Buddy J” Solomon

LF Larry Biittner 34 Years Old 44-9-32-37
1 of 1 Potential

SP Eddie Solomon 29 Years Old 29-64-58-83
1 ½ of 2 ½ Potential
Very High: Intelligence
High: Greed and Work Ethic
Low: Leadership

I was concerned with SP Solomon's Stuff rating at 29 but I was also hoping that I'd be able to shove him over the course of time to raise that stat up a little more. We'll see if that can be done. At the very least I was willing to trade a guy on my bench – who as you can see Pittsburgh moved into their minor league system – to risk it.

I moved SP Solomon into the #5 slot on my rotation so we'll see how he does. In turn, SP Mendez was sent down to the minors. With Mendez out of the picture I was able to bring up another outfielder, CF Dalton Sutton.

CF Dalton Sutton 25 Years Old 32-16-42-69
Also plays 1B 65.... LF 66..... RF 72
Speed: 72
Stealing: 100
Base Running: 84

The guy is fast and can be put on First in late games when we need a tying run. And if I remember during games, he can also come in defensively for a variety of positions. His bat isn't strong enough to shove out LeFlore in Center but maybe next year he can take a position somewhere in the outfield if things go well.

I decided to make another trade because I can't help myself.
Trade With CIN
(Portraits at the bottom of this post)

Give
1B Terry Crowley

Receive
SP Tom Seaver
$280,000

Fan Reaction for getting SP Seaver increase is amazing.

SP Tom Seaver 35 Years Old 41-63-50-94
Very High: Work Ethic, Greed and Intelligence
Low: Leadership

1B Terry Crowley 33 Years Old 48-53-58-42

I seem to have neglected to write down every important thing but we'll get by somehow.

Considering the change just made I decided to make a few other moves.

I put Kingman back on 1B, moved LeFlore to LF and in spite of what I said yesterday, put my new call-up Sutton in CF. This does mean Buckner isn't going to be starting but too bad. SP Seaver is now in my Rotation, shoving SP Solomon from the starter's role and into the pen. You could say I should've planned ahead but you'll find out that I'm not that kind of player.

I don't know. Kingman seems like he can cover First and I've clearly changed my mind about Sutton. I was also getting tired of watching Crowley swing so poorly even though he only had 59 AB. But its still early so its the right time to freak out. As a result I put SP Seaver in my #2 slot in the Rotation so that seemed like a decent enough move along with getting some extra cash to lighten the blow. Maybe I can put something together. We'll see.

Game 1

Game 2

The first game obviously didn't go well so I was hoping for a better outcome with the second game of the series.

It took until the top of the Third to turn my mood a little sour when the Dodgers loaded the bases with Two Outs. In spite of my best efforts of strategically hitting the #1 button on my keyboard, the Dodgers still brought home 2 by the end of the inning, 2-0 LAD.

In the Bottom of the 5th Gross gained the first hit of the game for the Cubs. Its been a rough time. With Two Outs in the inning I wasn't hoping for much so I put on a Hit and Run with C Foote. I needed some risk and it paid off with a Hit and an RBI, 2-1 LAD. CF Sutton also took a base due to an error but the inning ended with a Strike Out by Krukow. Honestly I was just happy to have some guys on base.

At the top of the 8th LA put men on First and Second with 1 Out. A Hit brought one of the runners home but I was able to follow up with a pair of outs to prevent another run from crossing the plate, 3-1 LAD.

In the bottom half of the inning I put Buckner in for my Pitcher. I knew there was a reason I moved him to the bench! But he Ground Out. Yeah, I knew there was a reason... At the very least the rest of the team put together something with men on First and Third in exchange for Two Outs. 1B Kingman came up to try his luck, bringing home a Run with a swing, 3-2 LAD. Vail repeated the effort 3-3. Gross Hit to load the bases however C Foote Flew Out to end the inning.

I decided to put in RP Lee at the top of the 9th and he held onto the tie.

At the Bottom of the same inning Sutton put himself on First Base with a Hit. I decided to leave RP Lee in the game in order to lay down a sacrifice for Sutton to put him on Second. De Jesus, mentioned for the first time in a while walked onto First Base. Randle came up behind him, bashing the ball into the outfield and bringing home the winning run, 4-3 CHC.

Game 1

Game 2

Things were difficult, and mostly quiet through the first half of the game. This was made even more prevalent when the Cubs had guys on Second and Third with no way to bring them home after a Fly Out, Walk and a Double Play.

I must've been annoyed enough because I stopped taking notes around the Sixth inning when MON scored four runs in that inning, 4-0 MON. However in the bottom half de Jesus hit a Home Run edging the first eventful thing we've done all day, 4-1 MON.

At the top of the Ninth I put in RP Capilla who refused to allow another run.

In the bottom of the Ninth I did what I could. Both Vail and Gross were at the corners with no outs and things were looking better. With a Hit and Run on Ontiveros hit a Ground Out but brought Vail home, 4-2 CHC. Without that H&R it would've been an easy Double Play ball but it wouldn't mean anything as Foote Ground Out and Randle, who PH for the Pitcher, repeated the action to end the game.
