Canadian Baseball League - The Beginning
With the Major League Baseball being USA based only, north of the boarder a few wealthy businessmen, eight to be exact wanted to start their own baseball league. Thus on January 1st, 1871 the Canadian Baseball League was born. Two separate leagues will form one. The Western League consisting of two teams from British Columbia (Vancouver Vipers and Victoria Vikings) and two teams from Alberta (Calgary Wranglers and Edmonton Reign) and the Eastern League consisting of two teams from Ontario (Ottawa Renegades and Toronto Titans) and two teams from Quebec (Quebec City Nordiques and Montreal Monarchs).
I have been hired as the General Manager of the Vancouver Vipers. The inaugural draft is held today as well and we have the 6th overall pick in a serpentine draft. However, before we choose players we have a Manager vacancy. side note: I am just the GM so the manager will take over the managerial duties. In my next post I will go over the whole Franchise. *side note#2: I also have cannot be fired off so I can be fired. |

*so i forgot to add in the minor leagues so i made a new league with the right financials so I guess it was a good thing I messed up.
Owner The Owner is Mackenzie Owens who is 63 years old. He is demanding, controlling and meddling. Lucky me. So far we start off with $2,388 in the green. The market size, market loyalty and fan interest are at 1 and non existent. Assistant GM So far this spot is vacant and I am looking for an assistant. There are 7 free agent candidates and they all have an unproven reputation. There are a few that have some years of experience while some have 0. Manager Harry Murphy is the Manager I have been given and he is 37 and unproven. He won't cause a rift in the media or in the clubhouse, He reminds me of John Gibbons. I will give him a chance. Bench Coach Ron Chisholm is the bench coach and he is a lot like Harry Murphy. He also works better with youngster rather than veterans. So he will work good with the young players we will draft in the inaugural draft. Pitching Coach Kevin Peter has 21 years of experience and works well with finesse pitchers. He has no ambitions to manage. He also has a decent reputation. Hitting Coach Allan Skiffington has a fair reputation and is neutral when teaching hitting. That's all the info we have. Trainer Dominque Serra is a trainer that works with preventing injuries. He is LEGENDARY with fatigue recovery and Outstanding in preventing other injuries, Good in healing legs. Average, fair and poor in others. In my next post tonight I will recap you the draft. |

Inaugural Draft Draft Order
1st Overall - Toronto Titans 2nd Overall - Vancouver Vipers 3rd Overall - Ottawa Renegades 4th Overall - Edmonton Reign 5th Overall - Victoria Vikes 6th Overall - Montreal Monarchs 7th Overall - Calgary Wranglers 8th Overall - Quebec City Nordiques 1st Overall - Toronto Titans - RHSP Mark Sandhoff Mark Sanhoff is a 20 year old RHSP from Ontario. He is a 4 star/5 star player. He throws between 90-92 MPH. He has great movement (96/96) and control(90/100) and has the best stuff at 16/100. His best pick is a splitter followed by a fastball. Also can throw a curveball and slider. He was the top pick in many mock drafts. 2nd Overall - Vancouver Vipers - RHSP Rudy "Bulldozer" Fifield With the 2nd overall pick, I had a tough choice between pitchers. I went with the already developed and in his prime Fifield. He was 29. He has the 2nd best stuff in the draft class at 15/15. He is a 5 star/5 star player. He throws between 89-91 MPH. He has excellent movement (98/98) and great control (91/97). Rudy's best pitch is a sinker. He has a decent fast and also throws a slider and curveball. Regarded as the 2nd best pitcher available. 3rd Overall - Ottawa Renegades - RHSP Royce "Salesman" English The 3rd overall was owned by another Ontario based team as Ottawa selected a pitcher by the name of Royce English He is a 5 star/5 star player. He has great stuff (16/16) and throws between 90-92 MPH. His control (97/100) is outstanding and his movement is great (93/93). His best pitch is a splitter followed by a fastball. He also throws a slider and curveball. Not bad at all for a 26 year old. 4th Overall - Edmonton Reign - RHSP Nelson Newcomb Another pitcher came off the boards at 4th overall with an Alberta team getting their first crack at the draft. Edmonton drafted 26 year old Nelson Newcomb. He has some good stuff (13/13) and throws between 90-92 MPH. His control has great potential (91/100) but his movement might be just "good" compared to others (86/86). His best pitch is a fastball followed by a slider and then a curveball. He seems to be just learning a changeup. 5th Overall - Victoria Vikings - RHSP Derek Rodd For the 5th straight slot, a pitcher was taken. Victoria Vikings selected 5 star/5 star Derek Rodd. He has some decent stuff but not as good to others (11/11) and throws between 89-91 MPH. His control (85/100) and movement( 90/90) are ok. He throws 3 pitches well: a fastball, a slider, a curve and is working on a changeup. 6th Overall - Montreal Monarchs - RHSP Gillies Garcia For the first time today, a Quebec based team came up to the podium to announce the selection of 2 star/4 star 19 year old RHSP Gillies Garcia. He has the potential to have the best stuff (13/19) and throws between 90-92 MPH. He has great control (95/96) and good movement (81/81). He throws the best fastball in the game so far (31/33) and also throws a curve and a screwball. 7th Overall - Calgary Wranglers - RHSP Wayne Dill With the first round coming to an end, Calgary comes up to announce they select 3 star/3 1/2 star 28 year old RHSP Wayne Dill. He has ok stuff (11/11) and throws between 89/91 MPH. His control is good (91/93) and movement is good (86/86). He throws a fast ball, a slider and a curve. Like a few others he is working on a changeup. 8th Overall - Quebec City Nordiques - Frank "Gabby" Brocklebank The end of the first round saw Quebec City take a chance on 23 year old RHSP who goes by the name of "Gabby". His stuff is top notch (16/16) and throws between 90-92 MPH. He is a 2 star/3 1/2 star player. The concerns about his pitching is that he can't control it like others can (80/85) and he doesn't have as much movement (85/85). His best pitch is a cutter and he throws a pretty mean fastball as well. He also throws a slider and a curve. 15th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - RF Lee Monahan With my 2nd round pick, I decided to pick a solid hitter in Lee Monahan. He great home run power, the best in the draft without a doubt (23/23). He also has great gap power (81/85) and ok contact skills (57/75). He also has some great baserunning skills and speed. He seems better in LF so I will slide him into LF for the time being. 18th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - RHSP Adam Leonard With my 3rd round draft pick, I decided to take a chance on another pitcher. I selected 17 year old 1 1/2 star/4 star RHSP Adam Leonard. He has some good stuff (11/11) and throws between 90-92 MPH. He has good movement (86/86) but has trouble with control (56/100). His best pitch is a fastball and also throws a slider as well as a curve. He is also currently working on a changeup. 31st Overall - Vancouver Vipers - 2B Dave "Rush Hour" Blondeau With my 4th round pick, I figured I would shore up the shallow position that is 2B. I went with 3 star/4 star 26 year old Dave Blondeau. He has good contact potential (45/73) to go with decent gap power (59/64). He also can play 1B as good as he can play 2B so thats good for depth. Across the board he is average in defence skills except he is good at turning a DP (59). He is also average at stealing, he will swipe a few in a good season. 34th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - 3B Stephen Casey With my 5th round pick, I couldn't pass up the batting skills of this 3B. 4 star/4 1/2 star 21 year old Stephen Casey was my 5th rounder. He has great home run power (20/20) matched with gap power (62/62) and decent contact potential (54/66). On defence he is below average and will need to show he can field otherwise he will be DHing. 47th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - C Colin Scruby With the catcher position running thin, I thought it would be a good time to select one. I took 1 1/2 star/3 star 23 year old Colin Scruby. He calls a good game and has a average arm. He can be very good offensively as well with good gap power (62/62) and above average contact potential (41/58). He can also play CF, 2B and RF. 50th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - SS John Hauk To fill up my infield I decided to fill the SS position with 2 star/3 1/2 star 19 year old John Hauk. He is a defensive wiz and I will hopefully bank on him to hit now and in the future. I see many gold gloves in his future at the very least. He has some home run power (7/7) mixed with gap power (53/53) and some contact potential (38/49). 63rd Overall - Vancouver Vipers - RF Ray Weatherby With my infield almost set I needed to focus on out fielders now. With Lee Monahan moving to Left where he is slightly better I drafted 3 star 20 year old Ray Weatherby who has better range in right than Lee did. What Ray doesn't have though is Lee's hitting ability. He can develop into a decent contact hitter if all goes right (45/52) and he has below average gap power (46/46). 66th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - CF Bill McNutt To fill my last OF spot I decided on a 2 star 20 year old CF Bill McNutt. He has very decent range and some contact ability (40/40). 79th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - 1B Jason Gates With the draft talent really running thin, I totally forgot about a 1B. So I was stuck with Jason Gates who can barely hit and is an above average fielder. Hopefully I can get an upgrade soon enough. 82nd Overall - Vancouver Vipers - 2B Marcus Patey With all positions filled, I went with a guy who can play 5 different positions. He can play LF, RF, 2B, 3B and SS. His hitting neds work but he can field all 5 positions decently. 95th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - C Doug Pitts To shore up my bench I drafted Doug Pitts to be the backup catcher. He can call the game just as well as Scruby but he under developed on the hitting side of baseball. He can run though, so he could be a valuable PR 98th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - SS Jean-Claude Lesage I drafted a backup SS now with Jean Claude. He can field with the best of them but like many other drafted this late in the draft his hitting needs work. 111st Overall - Vancouver Vipers - RF Roy Marquet Depth player. 114th Overall - Vancouver Vipers - 1B Bang Kung Either him or a 39 year old Herb Hapgood |
