Fictional White Sox 'Dynasty?'

Hello everyone, I am going to give writing a dynasty another try (I did one back in OOTP 13 for a few seasons and then I got fired, so of course my natural reaction is let's do this again and make it harder (although this time no firing) since I did so well the first time).

*** I am doing stats only with exception of 'OTHER' ratings.

League Setup: 26 teams with MLB names (think 1980s baseball teams/alignment). One twist is 2 wild cards, so 4 playoff teams per league. Fictional players. I have simmed 20 seasons and am sitting at the end of the season, the World Series has just concluded. I am only using OTHER ratings on a 2-8 scale. Can't be fired. I am using 1986 financials and settings.

I have chosen the White Sox for the following reasons: They have never made the playoffs in this game and they have the lowest win % of the teams that have not been in the playoffs. They have the lowest budget currently but only the 14th lowest payroll.

League History:
 photo OOTP History.jpg

History by Team (teams with the lowest Win %):

White Sox History:

I have taken a quick glance at the team and there are some pieces to work with which I will dive into more in the next post.

Sad that Cleveland has fewer total wins then the Sox but still has made the playoffs twice

Owner's Goals and Meet the Infielders

Hands-off but demanding owner Rodrigo Alvarez has given me the following goals for the future:
1. Play near .500 ball.
2. Upgrade 3B
3. Increase attendance from 16,571 to 18,000
4. Have a final total balance of $1.1 million (right now it is $1.5 in the red)
5. Build the team to make the playoffs in 3 years

At least he gives me a little bit of time to do what hasn't been done before right?

As you will see from the below I have 2 great pieces and a bunch of filler when it comes to the batting side of the team.

C: Alonso Rocha - .295-41-26 (.295/.362/.582/.944) – Is one of the two power hitters this team has. Our scout calls him All-Star caliber with above-average power and moderate contact. He is under team control until 1962. In 1958 he hit .232-31-94.

Rest of the Catchers in the organization worth mentioning: Glen Andrews is the ML backup. .262-3-18 in 60 games. He is a tick above average and is good defensive catcher. Salvador Vazquez (AAA) .273-14-77 could be a role player in the major leagues. Juan Nunez (AAA) .281-2-23 (AA) .294-6-37 projects to be a solid major league hitter with .290/.350/.420 not out of the question and could hit 15 HR per year. Dan Wilson (AA) .277-13-63 is a potential impact player that any team would love to have. Woody McDonald ( R ) has a chance to be on a big league bench but hit .209-1-10 in limited action.

1B: Hector Leal - .276-30-99 (.276/.331/.483/.814) – Is the other power hitter on the roster. Not a gifted hitter but can turn the power on if he gets a hold of one. He is up for arbitration and is wanting a raise from 433k up from 318k. The arb estimate is 385k. Last year he hit .294-21-94.

Other 1B: Sherwood Cook .253-4-30 and is defying odds being in the majors according to the scout. Ken Horton .290-5-25 has average power but overall doesn’t look like a major leaguer. Jeff Richter was somehow a Sept callup after playing only 38 games this season in all levels including 31 in A ball. Juan Matos (AAA) .242-3-10 and he was .317-2-18 in AAA last season and was in AA for parts of both seasons as well, however he is a DH only prospect as he is a liability in the field. Jesus Dominguez (A) .279-4-49 doesn’t have the scout’s blessing but he has been hitting well when given the chance. He has more walks than strikeouts also.

2B: TJ Munoz - .286-1-42 (.286/.429/.326/.755) – Was the starting 2nd baseman this year. He proved the scout wrong who said he would be lucky to hit .250 over the course of a season. In the last 3 seasons he has not hit more than 1 HR in a season. He’s pretty atrocious defensively. On a minimum contract.

Other 2B: Chad Dixon .256-0-19 isn’t a ML caliber player. Edgardo Herrera is good defensively at the infield spots and hit .275-1-5 in limited duty. He might be a decent candidate to keep around as a backup middle infielder. Spencer Lampson was at A ball most of the year but was a Sept call-up. At 26 he needs to make it now if he is going to make it at all. Forest Greenwell (R) .233-0-10 has some scouts thinking he has a future, but not ours. Jack Ford (R) .361-1-34 also had a good start at SSA at the end of the year.

SS: Harold Robinson .249-0-37 (.249/.291/.300/.591) – Is listed as a career minor leaguer. Pretty solid defensively. Up for arbitration, but I don’t see extending him an offer as of right now.

Other SS: Alvin Doud .225-0-5 – Has our scout thinking he could be a decent player. He’s speedy and solid defensively and projects to be a decent hitter and was .279-0-26 in AAA for most of the year. He could be an affordable option at SS.

3B: Ernest Morgan .252-6-41 (.252/.370/.318/.688) – This is the position I am commanded to upgrade this offseason. I can see why, not much pop from the hot corner.

Other 3B: Michael Howard was a Sept call-up and was .343-1-3 in limited action and hit well .320-12-51 in AA this season. Antonio Sandoval is in the international complex and projects to be a major league talent and could reach start potential. Juan Espinoza .284-4-47 hit well in AA but doesn’t project to be a major leaguer. Pablo Domniguez .306-1-10 had a good year as well in Short Season A ball.

Outfielders and Hitters Summary

OF: Derek Barrett - .333-6-71 (.333/.410/.448/.858) is a 3-time All-Star and is a solid leadoff or possible #3 hitter that had 22 steals this past season. He is 34 years old and is making 1.4 million dollars until 1961. He had twice as many walks as strikeouts. He can be a solid contributor it seems.

Ben White - .304-5-34 (.306/.363/.399/.762) is another solid hitter but will be a singles hitter. He is up for arbitration.

Antonio Polledo - .268-5-26 (.268/.351/.361/.711) was the other outfield starter. I don’t see him being a starter on a playoff team.

Cornell Durham - .288-5-34 (.288/.320/.406/.726) split time with Polledo. Another filler guy who doesn’t project to much.

Other Outfielders: Lester Ellis .281-5-28 spent some time in Chicago and hit well. That seems to baffle the scout. Gonzalo Gonzalez .267-4-11 was also on the bench for a bit but appears destined for a career in the minors. Rosario Cirolli is at the international complex and could become a player. Pedro Chacon .304-2-22 had a decent year at Short Season A and could prove the scout wrong if he keeps it up.

Hitters Summary:

Derek Barrett (OF) and Alonso Rocha (C) are the only two position players that are definitely locked up. Everyone else is either arbitration or minimum salaries. Ben White (OF) and Hector Leal (1B) are two others that I will definitely keep. The team had an 8.6 million player payroll this season and these 4 guys are projecting to take up about 3 million. There is only 1 pitcher that is definitely on the hook right now also and he is making 710K so that’s almost half the payroll in just those 5 players.

Unless something major changes I think I am going to go into next season with defensive-minded Alvin Doud as my shortstop. I’m going to hold off onto any other decisions until I figure out where my pitching staff is at. I don’t have much money to spend so I need to look at everything before making any moves.

Lineup
CF – Ben White
? (right now this is probably Cornell Durham – OF)
LF – Derek Barrett
C – Alonso Rocha
1B – Hector Leal
?
?
?
SS – Alvin Doud

Pitchers

The pitchers are not a great group (which makes sense since they are 6th place this season out of 7 teams). The one bright spot is the farm seems to be well stocked with 7 pitchers in the top 100 rankings in baseball.

Because of all the players I profile I will put the summary up here in case people don't want to read about all the players individually.

I expect to see Dickson, Miller and maybe Cook in the rotation. And I figure to see Holman, Lopez and Taylor in the pen. So that is about 6 of the 12 spots. I cringe to see what else I end up with on the pitching staff if I really am strapped with cash. The #1 thing I would LOVE to do is unload the 700K that is tied to Aaron Hamilton.

Larry Dickson – (L) 11-17 4.18 1.21 WHIP is the #1 pitcher on the team right now it seems. He had 250 k’s in 262 innings. He is an innings eater and at 25 is on a minimum deal and projects to be a back of the rotation guy.

Melvin Jackson – (R) 14-13 4.91 1.40 WHIP is a free agent after this season and will not be retained. He is not worth the qualifying offer either, so no compensation for him. My scout agrees and says this guy should not be pitching for a playoff team, which is what we aspire to be.

Denny Cook – (L) 9-14 4.75 1.46 WHIP the scout says he is a Sept call-up guy or maybe long relief. He had a 2:1 K:BB rate and struck out 6.5 per 9 innings.

Tommy Jimenez – (R) 4-6 5.31 1.58 WHIP started 20 games for the team this season. He is currently in the bullpen though. The scout says he has spot starter potential. He had bad control this season though 81 walks to 95 strikeouts.

Danny Smith – (L) 8-11 5.47 1.55 WHIP has a good strikeout rate but has the rep of not being good enough for a playoff team.

James Holman – (R) 3-10 3 SV 4.84 1.46 WHIP. Not great control 41 BB to 68 K could be an end of the bullpen guy (not meaning closer, meaning mop-up innings).

Juan Lopez – (L) 5-5 25 SV 3.70 1.46 WHIP. An above-average relief pitcher. A good option to have in the pen and is currently the closer on the team.

John Taylor – (L) 7-1 1 SV 3.82 1.51 WHIP. Not much for control, he has 37 BB and 43 K. He was better this year than last year so if he can improve a little more he could be useful in the pen.

Julio Cruz – (R) 5-6 2 SV 4.80 1.65 WHIP. Another guy with bad control 55 BB and 62 K.

Cesar Cortez – (R) 2-4 2 SV 10.31 2.19 WHIP, is a guy who shouldn’t be in the bullpen.

Aaron Hamilton – (R) 5-4 1 SV 5.11 1.51 WHIP in AAA. He is the pitcher I mentioned in the last post that is on the books for next season. The previous year in CHI he was 2-10 4.72 1.44 WHIP. Doesn’t seem to be worth a spot in the rotation and at 36 years old I don’t think he will be getting better. I’ll see if I can unload him for anything.

On the Farm:
Mark Jerome (R) is the #5 prospect and was 10-8 3.38 with a 1.21 WHIP in A ball this season. Our scout agrees with the ranking saying “it is a easy to dream about this kid.”

Mike Tyrrell (L) is the #34 prospect and “if he develops can be a front of the rotation guy”. In Short Season A ball he was 14-2 2.48.

Terry Smith (R) is the #35 prospect and projects to be a back-end starter. He’s 18 and in Rookie ball he was 5-1 3.68 with a 1.41 WHIP and he needs to work on control as he had 22 BB and 33 K.

Miguel Sanchez (L) is the #59 prospect and the scout says a conservative guess is a #3 starter and he is ready for AAA next year. He was 10-6 3.42 1.11 WHIP in AA with 37 BB and 111 K. He should provide some rotation help soon.

Michael Clark (L) is the #63 prospect and was in Rookie ball this season. He has #1 or #2 starter upside. This season he is 4-1 1.38 .93 WHIP 16 BB and 74 K. He was in SSA for a little bit also and was 1-0 3.29 1.68WHIP 9 BB and 15 K so he has a little bit of work to do on control next season.

Andrew Baker (R) is the #65 prospect and he is in Short Season A ball and he was 4-0 3.51 1.54 WHIP and had 21 BB and 33 K and so he needs some work on his control also. It’s hard to see him being a star is what the scout is telling me.

Eugene Miller (L) is the #99 prospect and he is currently in the bullpen in Chicago and projects to be a middle of the rotation guy. He was 1-0 2.89 .86 WHIP 4 BB and 7 K in 2 starts spanning 9.1 innings. In AA this season he was 18-4 2.44 1.10 WHIP 55 BB and 176 K. He will have a great shot at being in the rotation next season.

Andre Taylor (R) is in AAA and is ready for the major leagues next season. He was 7-5 22 SV 2.38 1.21 WHIP 46 BB and 84 K in San Rafael (AAA). The scout says he won't be a closer or set-up guy but could provide some relief in the pen.

Robert Baker (L) could be a back-end starter. He was 14-4 2.97 1.03 WHIP with 31 BB and 122 K in Sherman (AA) and in limited action in AAA he was 1-1 3.18 .82 WHIP 2 BB and 17 K.

Craig Sparks (R) was 6-1 4 SV 1.04 .99 WHIP and 28 BB to 83 K in A ball. He projects to be a mid-rotation guy.

Yes, that is interesting. I thought about taking them as well, but I figured I should try and take a team that has not been to the playoffs before. Also, look at the Padres, they have the worst NL West win % but have been in the playoffs 10 times!

Arbitration

Finally time to start moving the calendar a little bit now that I am done figuring out everything about the team.

Here is the original look at arbitration, followed by the current look after I withdrew a bunch of offers to people who I can let walk in Free Agency. There are 3 decisions yet to be made on backup catcher (Andrews' offer might be withdrawn also and I could go with AAA C Nunez) and also the 2 outfielders Polledo and Dunham (I could go with Ellis and someone else in AAA and maybe not lose much). I've cleared up about 3 million dollars in offers.

 photo 1949Arb.jpg

 photo 1949Arb2.jpg

Here is a quick look at what I will call a Doomsday Roster. If things are really so bad monetarily that I can’t get anyone else to sign with me even after these potential arbitration cuts this is the team I would go into next season with:
C – Rocha, Andrews, Nunez
1B – Leal, Horton
2B – TJ Munoz
3B – Jose Oliva – Wasn’t profiled before but will compete with Doud for SS. He has hit over .300 the last few seasons in both AAA and Chicago in his stints in both places.
SS – Doud
OF – Barrett, White, Ellis, Polledo, Dunham (Dunham/Polledo is up for debate as they are expensive (comparatively speaking) and don’t add a whole lot).
SP – Dickson, Miller, Baker, Jimenez, Cook
RP – Cruz, Taylor, Lopez, Holman, 2 more bodies and then either 1 more pitcher or most likely middle infield help.

Offseason Update

I placed the following 6 people on the 40-man roster prior to the Rule 5 draft:

SP Miguel Sanchez – 10-6 3.42 at Sherman (AA) last season. A future #3 starter according to my scout.

SP Von Davis – 11-4 2.86 at New Brighton (A) last season. Projects to be a spot starter, my team is in such a mess and I had the space available that I wanted to play it safe and put him on the roster.

RP Jeff Kelley – 5-8 5 SV 4.40 at New Brighton (A) last season. Back end of the rotation future. Same reasoning of having the space available.

C Dan Wilson - .277-13-63 at Sherman (AA) last year. Superstar potential as mentioned in the hitting post earlier. I had to add him this season, I can’t risk losing a potential superstar.

C Juan Nunez - .281-2-23 at San Rafael (AAA) last season. He might be with Chicago at the start of the season.

SS Jose Oliva - .285-2-34 at San Rafael (AAA) and .301-0-16 in Chicago last year. He could push Alvin Doud for the SS spot.

In the Rule 5 Draft I selected 3 players:
3B Bill Wheeler – Round 1, Pick 5 - He was in the St. Louis organization and hit .211-16-78 last season in AA but he had 120 walks and had .366 OBP. Not quite an elite prospect but the next tier down and he has great raw power, something my team lacks.

SP Jason Brown – Round 2, Pick 31 – From the Baltimore Orioles , he was the best starting pitcher left in the draft pool and I took a flyer on him. 7-7 3.68 27 BB/114 K in AA and 4-4 3.72 19 BB/31 K in AAA. The scout says he might make the big leagues on pure heart. I will see what he has in Spring Training and see if he can hang at that level right now.

2B Francisco Moran – Round 3, Pick 57 – From the Toronto organization, he made quite the leap last season batting .339-3-32 in AA, .309-3-33 in AAA and .342-1-2 in Toronto in 38 AB. If he can keep putting the bat on the ball he will be a big help for us.

** I did not lose anyone in the draft.

Spring Training Update – 11 games in and we are 4-7. We have been shut out 3 times. Some starters are doing well and some can’t find the plate. My next Spring update I will focus more on the pitching as I will have more innings to compare.

Some of the Position Battles:
2B: Francisco Moran is outplaying Edgardo Herrera so far. Francisco is hitting .348 compared to Edgardo’s .083

3B: Ramiro Rosa (.222-1-1) is in a good battle with Rule 5 draftee Bill Wheeler (.240-2-3) but Wheeler has 3 errors so far this spring and has struck out 48% of the time. It will be interesting to see if I bend to the potential and bite the bullet since we won’t be playoff ready this season.

SS: Jose Oliva (.286-0-4) is outplaying Alvin Doud (.136-0-0)

Rule 5 update – SP Jason Brown is 1-1 in 2 starts and has 9.95 ERA and has walked 7 and struck out 3 in 6.1 IP

I am now 2/3 of the way done with Spring Training. We are 9-13 and have been shut out 4 times. This could be a long year. It would be a miracle to hit the owner's expectation of .500 ball. Right now the preseason prediction has us winning 57 games and being the worst team in baseball. An excellent start to my tenure, but of course nowhere to go but up!!

*** One gameplay settings update, I mentioned I would be playing cannot be fired. I am thinking of taking that off after my first 3 year contract is up. We'll see, I want to guarantee I at least get the 3 seasons I was promised.

First off before we get back to our Spring Notes I forgot to mention a pre-Spring trade that I made:
I traded OF Cornell Durham to Montreal for OF Jon Hodges. This was a clear money dumping move. I saved about 100k. Cornell had hit .288-5-34 in half a season in Chicago and hit .282-11-66 the year before that. And Jon had batted .263-13-42 last season. It will be interesting to track this progress this season.

Spring Notes:
The battle for the 5 starting spots is heating up. There are two spots definitely taken:

Larry Dickson (11-17 4.58 LY) has a 1.33 WHIP and 6 BB to 14 K this spring. He and Robert Baker (in AA and 1 start in AAA LY) have solidified spots in the rotation. Baker has a 3.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and has shown decent control with 3 BB and 8 K in 16 IP. The big knock on Baker will be if he can routinely go long enough in games. Stamina could be an issue.

To be honest the best pitcher this spring has been #5 prospect Mark Jerome in 14 IP he has allowed 6 H and has a 2 BB to 10 K stat line and a 0.64 ERA. I’m just not sure I want to start his clock just yet. But if I want him to fulfill his career potential I might need to as he is 21 years old.

The rest of the candidates for the 2.5 spots left in the rotation are:
Denny Cook – 1.58 WHIP, 3.00 ERA, 6 BB/9K in 12 IP
Von Davis – 1.80 WHIP, 4.50 ERA, 8/11 in 10 IP
Bob McGeachin is just returning from a long injury – 1.67 WHIP, 4.50 ERA, 5/6 in 6 IP
Eugene Miller – 1.93 WHIP, 5.14 ERA, 4/12 in 14 IP but 23 hits allowed.
Miguel Sanchez – 1.45 WHIP, 4.91 ERA, 3/2 in 11 IP
Aaron Hamilton – 2.25 WHIP, 4.05 ERA, 6/2 6.2 IP

I think Cook and Sanchez have the inside tracks, but not sure who the 5th starter would be if I do not go with Mark Jerome.

Bullpen:
Julio Cruz – 2.20 WHIP, 5.40 ERA 4/6 5 IP will be in the bullpen based on last year’s numbers but will be in the middle of the bullpen not trusted with too many high pressure situations.
James Holman – 1.08 WHIP, 3.24 ERA 4/9 in 8.1 IP and he could also be a borderline starter so maybe he could be the last piece of the puzzle above.
Tommy Jimenez – 1.29 WHIP, 3.86 ERA, 3/5 in 4.2 IP
Danny Smith - .79 WHIP, 0.00 ERA, 2/9 in 6.1 IP will be our 8th inning man.
John Taylor – 1.33 WHIP, 3.00 ERA, 2/2 in 6 IP
Juan Lopez – 1.00 WHIP, 0.00 ERA, 1/0 in 3 IP will be the closer.

A couple of youngsters 19 y/o Terry Smith and 22 y/o Jeff Kelley have impressed also in very limited duty.

I have made my first round of cuts for the hitters. The team is starting to come together.

SS Jose Oliva will beat out SS Alvin Doud.

It looks like late riser IF/OF Timothee Uguccione will make the team, he is hitting .304-1-3 this spring and can play the entire IF and some OF.

3B Bill Wheeler (.231-2-3 22K in 52 AB) is losing his battle right now with 3B Ramiro Rosa (.294-3-5 8K in 34 AB)

A level Catcher Larry Phillips is making a charge for the backup catcher spot hitting .385-2-4 trying to take the spot of Glen Andrews (.259-1-5) but I think Phillips might start the year in AA and see how he does there.

1B Jeff Richter (.303-1-6) seems to be outplaying 1B Ken Horton (.150-1-5) for backup 1B and DH consideration.

In the OF, Roland Cook (.421-2-3) and Antonio Polledo (.317-0-3) have come out of nowhere to lock down jobs. Looks like Jon Hodges will be in AAA if he clears waivers.

Now it is time to finish the rest of the spring and scour the waiver wire for some starting pitchers.

One more gameplay update. If you have been following along from the beginning I forgot to mention (but just edited post 1) that I am playing stats mainly with only OTHER ratings allowed on a 2-8 scale.

Let the Season Begin!!

Spring Training is over.

Most importantly we got out of it fairly healthy, one of our relievers, Tommy Jimenez is out for the first week. The pundits must have enjoyed my leadership this spring as my preseason prediction went from 57 wins and being the worst team in baseball to now projecting 70 wins and now being tied for 2nd worst team.

 photo 1960openingday.jpg

Here is the Opening Day Roster for the 1960 Chicago White Sox:

SP: Larry Dickson, James Holman, Eugene Miller, Robert Baker.

Dickson is far and away the ace of this staff. And he is only a decent Major League pitcher, which shows you how this staff is shaping up. I am starting off with a 4-man rotation as I have a bunch of off days for the first 3 weeks of the season. This allows me to delay a final cut for a position player. I let Mark Jerome pitch the last preseason game against Boston (who is projected to be the best team in the AL) and he got rocked so I decided it was best to start him off in AA. If he handles that well through the first 6-8 weeks he may get a chance at San Rafael (AAA) or even Chicago. As of right now, Miguel Sanchez is probably going to be the 5th starter.

RP: Jason Brown (Rule 5), Tommy Jimenez, Dorian Mills, Miguel Sanchez, Danny Smith, John Taylor and Juan Lopez.

This group is decent at the back of the bullpen and is really rough everywhere else. I will call up one more pitcher from AAA when we go back to the 5th starter. I have no idea who that will be right now, I will probably let the performance dictate that.

C: Alonso Rocha, Glen Andrews

Glen Andrews got the nod over Larry Phillips. I am going to let his experience help this team out. Larry Phillips will continue with his natural progression and start the season at Sherman (AA).

IF: Hector Leal (1B), Jeff Richter (1B), Francisco Moran (2B), Timothee Ugiccione (IF/OF), Jose Oliva (SS), Ramiro Rosa (3B), Bill Wheeler (3B)

I couldn’t decide between Rosa and Wheeler so I kept them both for now. We will see how this plays out during the first 3 weeks of the season while we roll with the 4-man rotation. I think Oliva will surprise some people this season. I see him as my underrated player.

OF: Derek Barrett, Jon Hodges, Roland Cook, Ben White, Antonio Polledo.

Jon Hodges came on really strong the last 10 games of Spring Training that I couldn’t let him go just yet. He is out of options and I wanted to take a longer look at him before exposing him to waivers.

Season Opener:
What a wild and crazy game. We jumped out on the Blue Jay ace Luis Herrera and scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning including a 2-run HR by Antonio Polledo. Larry Dickson pitched a great game just making 1 mistake pitch which wound up over the wall for a 3-run HR for DH Juan Morales. It stayed that way until Larry Dickson gave way to closer Juan Lopez who promptly gave up a run and barely got out of the inning as the Blue Jays had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out, but Lopez got the final out.

In the 10th inning, Jose Oliva and Derek Barrett started off with singles. I pulled my #4 hitter to bring in a top notch bunter, Timothee Ugioccione who got the job done and moved the guys along. After an intentional walk to Alonso Rocha to load the bases, Antonio Polledo came up big again with a 2-run double. But we could do no more damage with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. I then brought in my 2nd best reliever John Taylor. He gave up a single and a 2-run HR to his first 2 batters he faced. After getting a ground out he then plunks the next guy and gives up 2 more singles to load the bases with 1 out. After a force play at the plate on a ground ball, he gets the the next guy to ground out to end the inning. And we play on to the 11th.

After a fly out, Ben White and Jose Oliva each hit singles. Then after a dropped fly ball in center we have the bases loaded with nobody out and our bunting substitute Timothee Ugoccione up to bat. He comes through big again with a 2-run single. In the bottom half of the inning, I go with Rule 5 pick Jason Brown, because why not at this point. He strikes out the first batter he sees and walks the second. Then he gets the next two guys to ground out and the White Sox win game 1 8 to 6 over the Blue Jays in 11 innings!

April 1960

This first month of my tenure had a few ups and lots of downs. We are currently 7-12 and should be a bit better maybe more closer to 10-9, but we will get to that in a minute. Now let’s talk about the good, the bad and the ugly.

 photo 1960Aprstand.jpg

 photo 1960Aprsched.jpg

THE GOOD
2B Francisco Moran has really heated up after a slow start. He is currently batting .380/.426/.520. He is 15 of this last 30 (.500)

OF Derek Barrett is showing why he is a 3-time All-Star, 3-time Silver Slugger as he is currently leading the AL in Batting Average with a .403/.484/.545 line.

3B Bill Wheeler ended up taking over the full-time 3B role as he is batting .250-3-4 this month. He is striking out 33% of the time though.

OF Roland Cook has found a way to get on the field as much as he can as he is batting .386/.471/.386. A singles hitter, but he is able to get singles often.

If we even had half of a pitching staff we could be challenging for the playoffs with this offense.

THE BAD

The Bullpen is HORRIBLE. We have been credited with 8 blown saves so far this season. Including 3 in one game.

 photo 1960Aprpitbs.jpg

RP Jason Brown is on the verge of being returned back to Baltimore. He has a 15.43 ERA and a 2.43 WHIP in 7 IP.

RP John Taylor
who was supposed to be the 8th inning guy has started HORRENDOUSLY this season. In his first outing the first two batters went 1B, HR. In his next outing he gave up a leadoff 2B and the guy scored. In his 3rd outing He gave up a Grand Slam to the first batter he faced and a HR to the 2nd batter he faced. In his 4th outing he gave up a HR to the first batter he faced. He has allowed a run in every outing he has pitched.

SP Eugene Miller is 0-2 13.50 in 13.1 IP in 3 starts with a 2.17 WHIP.

THE UGLY

SP Larry Dickson was the only starter who could be counted on. He is 1-2 3.58 with a 1.10 WHIP. And then on 4/27 he was removed from the game after allowing 2 BB and a hit in 2/3 of an inning. Diagnosis: Torn Rotator Cuff out for 11 months. There goes any chance we had at a season.

1B Jeff Richter was batting .069 after 29 AB as the DH and backup 1B. He was sent down to San Rafael (AAA) on 4/29.

 photo 1960Aprbat.jpg
 photo 1960Aprpit.jpg

ROSTER MOVES:
4/13 – RP Julio Gonzalez was claimed off of waivers from LA. He had not pitched yet for LA. He is currently 0-0 5.63 ERA with a 2.13 WHIP for me after 8 innings.
RP Dorian Mills was optioned to AAA San Rafael to make room.

4/21 – 3B Ramiro Rosa .125 in 16 AB was optioned to AAA San Rafael
RP Manuel Mejia was brought up to Chicago. This was when we needed our 5th starter so we needed to move a reliever to the rotation and needed to backfill that bullpen spot. We need a full size bullpen as the starters are suspect.

4/24 – AA C Larry Phillips who was one of the last cuts was injured and put on the DL. He tore some ankle ligaments and will miss 4 months. He was batting .179-0-5 at AA Sherman.

4/28 – SP Larry Dickson was put on the 60 day DL.
SP Denny Cook was called up from AAA San Rafael. Denny was 2-0 5.03 with 4 BB and 21 K in 19.2 IP. He was having a good start in AAA and was most deserving of the chance.

4/29 – OF Roland Cook was put on the 15 day DL. This was a shame as he was playing really well for us. He should be back just after the 15 days are up.
1B Jeff Richter was demoted to AAA San Rafael, as mentioned already he was batting .069 this season.
C Dan Wilson was promoted to Chicago to take the spot of Richter and possibly get some DH work or maybe catch while Alonso Rocha DHs and we still have the 3rd catcher in Glen Andrews. Dan was batting .328-1-15 .328/.373/.508 at San Rafael.
OF Jesus Ortiz was promoted to Chicago to take Cook’s spot while he is recovering. Jesus was picked up via FA after the season started to fill out the AAA roster. He was batting .317-1-10 in San Rafael and deserved the shot at the 2 week trial in Chicago.

Farm Report

DOWN ON THE FARM:
AAA:
LF Antonio Aguilera .306-2-8 and .306/.368/.484 and currently off the 40-man roster. He was a pre-season pickup to fill out San Rafael (AAA)
2B Edgardo Herrera after a dismal showing in spring when I wanted to hand him the utility infielder job has shown well in .339-2-9 and .339/.391/.475

I have some hope in the AAA pitching ranks but I fear it is nothing more than a case of being a AAAA pitcher.
SP Clancy Martin 2-1 2.57 ERA in 21 IP with 1.14 WHIP 8 BB/10 K – not happy with the control though.
SP Stanford Miller 1-1 1 SV 0.63 ERA 14.1 IP and 0.91 WHIP and 4 BB/9 K he and Clancy Martin were both AAA pickups to fill out the team just before the season started.
SP Damon Morgan 3-1 2.49 ERA 1.38 WHIP in 21.2 IP and 13 BB/26 K.
RP Pat Black 0-1 3.38 ERA 1.31 WHIP in 10.2 IP and 5 BB/11 K

AA:
OF Matt Glass .365-1-13 and has shown well and wants to get back up to Chicago as soon as he can.
SP Mark Jerome is 2-0 1.80 ERA 0.85 WHIP 20 IP and 8 BB/ 15K and will be on the list to move up to AAA shortly. With the devastating injury to Larry Dickson I don’t see any reason to rush him this year.
SP Von Davis 2-0 0.00 ERA 0.82 WHIP and 5 BB/ 15 K.
SP Craig Sparks 1-2 2.78 ERA 0.93 WHIP 22.2 IP and 6 BB/25 K
SP Jake Wilkins 1-2 3.12 ERA 1.27 WHIP 26 IP and 9 BB/19 K.
RP Ramon Aguilera 0-0 1 SV 1.00 ERA 1.00 WHIP 9 IP and 2 BB/8 K

CF Alejando Dominguez .344-1-6 .344/.462/.500
OF Albert Yohemas .362-3-15 .362/.373/.603 in New Brighton (A) and currently 3-5 with 1 HR in AA.

A:
3B Pablo Domniguez .288-0-8 .288/.448/.346 he has 12 BB and 6 K.
C Octavio Lopez .303-1-5 .303/.385/.424
SP Andrew Baker 0-1 3.06 ERA 1.02 WHIP 17.2 IP 2 BB/17 K

May 1960

We had a great start to May and then we ended with a THUD! We started off 10-3 and then ended the month 13-13 after having a 7 game losing streak. It is nice to have a .500 month but it would have been nice to finish as strong as the month started. We were in the hunt for the Wild Card but we have since fallen back 5 games. This is going to be a long June as we play 28 games in the 30 days. If things keep going this way I might need to see if I can dump some salary (Derek Barrett?) to a contender.

 photo 1960Maystand.jpg
 photo 1960Maysched.jpg

OF Derek Barrett is making a run to be an All-Star starter and is batting .354-5-27 however his -8.7 ZR in LF is troublesome.

OF Ben White is batting .348-1-19 but his -5.2 ZR in CF is a problem.

C Alonso Rocha is heating up and is batting .289-10-27

1B Hector Leal had a great month and is hitting .280-9-27

SP Miguel Sanchez
has turned it around and is now 5-2 3.82 with a 1.09 WHIP

As you can see we have some problems in the field (Leal at 1B and Wheeler at 3B are below -1 ZR also) and that isn’t helping a pitching staff that is bad to begin with.

I need to find some consistency in the rotation. I get 2 good turns and then I get 2 bad turns to end the month.

The bullpen is starting to come around also. I am not gritting my teeth every single time I use the bullpen just every other time.

 photo 1960Maybat.jpg photo 1960Maypit.jpg

Roster Moves

May 1 – MR Bob Griffith was claimed off of waivers from St. Louis. He was 0-0 1.69 in 8 G and 10.2 IP and he had a 1.22 WHIP and 4 BB and 4 K. I thought he was a better option than we had and he was on a minimum deal. He had a 2.86 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 22 major league innings last season. The team voiced their concerns about Bob Griffith being a locker room cancer, but right after the signing we went on a nice run of wins. Hopefully we get back to that and no one will cause problems.
To make room for him RP Jason Brown (Rule 5 pickup) was placed on waivers and Texas picked him up. He is currently 0-1 7.40 ERA 2.18 WHIP in 20.2 IP for Texas. I do not miss him at all.

May 19 – OF Ronald Cook was activated off of the DL.
OF Jesus Ortiz .297-2-7 in Chicago was demoted to AAA San Rafael. It was a tough move and he might be on his way back up as Antonio Polledo is batting .216-2-7

AAA – San Rafael 25-22 4th Place
SP Jon Hanna - 5-3 2.25 ERA, 1.10 WHIP 23 BB/36 K in 60 IP
SP Damon Morgan – 4-2 3.42 ERA, 1.44 WHIP 31 BB/51 K 50 IP, my scout says he is ready for Chicago but I am not so sure with that BB to K ratio.
RP Enrique Parea – 0-1 4.01 ERA, 1.18 WHIP 12 BB/21 K 24.2 IP
IF Edgardo Herrera - .338-5-23 .334/.384/.529 and is close to taking the spot of Timothee Uguccioni who is starting to falter in Chicago.
OF Jesus Ortiz - .337-7-22 is threatening Antonio Polledo for his spot in Chicago. Jesus played well as an injury replacement for a few weeks and it will be interesting to see if he can sustain this performance.

AA – Sherman 29-18 2nd Place
SP Craig Sparks – 3-3 2.18 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 14 BB/56 K 62 IP. He is performing really well and might be up to San Rafael (AAA) soon.
SP Mark Jerome – 4-2 3.21 ERA, 1.16 WHIP 14 BB/46 K 53.1 IP.
SP Von Davis – 4-2 1.96 ERA, 1.17 WHIP 23 BB/44 K 46 IP
RP Jamie Skinner – 3-2 2 SV 3.31 ERA, 1.05 WHIP 13 BB/38 K 35.1 IP
RP Jake Wilkins – 3-2 2 SV 2.01 ERA, 0.94 WHIP 12 BB/36 K 40.1 IP
OF Albert Yohemas - .341-3-16 .341/.426/.451 has spent time at A also this season. He has been a good pickup as roster filler in the minors.

A – New Brighton 31-16 1st Place
SP Carlos Luna – 4-2 2.55 ERA, 1.07 WHIP 15 BB/47 K 49.1 IP
SP Ron Stokes – 3-1 2.40 ERA, 1.09 WHIP 10 BB/49 K 41.1 IP

C Octavio Lopez - .287-5-25 .287/.390/.473
OF Millard Simpson - .383-2-10 .383/.492/.553 has played well in limited time in New Brighton.

June 1960

After a good May in which I was feeling better about the team we go right back to being the team we were in April except for the fact that we couldn’t hit this month either. The bullpen went right back to being the worst bullpen ever assembled. The book must be out on 3B Bill Wheeler because he batted .189 in June. C Alonso Rocha went on a slide and batted .235 and SS Jose Oliva batted .229 so much for being my under the radar breakout player.

Derek Barrett is currently #2 in AL RF All-Star Voting

 photo 1960Junbat.jpg
 photo 1960Junpit.jpg

There was one good thing that happened in June. Tommy Jimenez pitched the 27th no-hitter in MLB history vs the Yankees. It’s the first no-hitter my team has ever thrown in a game that I watched or managed.

 photo 1960Junnohit.jpg

I’m thinking about moving some of my high priced assets that can be flipped for pieces that can be part of the rebuilding process. For instance almost all the WIN NOW teams are in the playoff hunt and about 4 of them are lacking at catcher and I have the #2 rated catcher in the league and he is owed two more years at $900k. I think I am stuck with Derek Bennett, he so far is exercising his 10/5 rights and vetoing any trade. He can easily be a DH for me next season, but I can’t afford to have him in the field too much as he is a big liability out there.
 photo 1960Junstand.jpg
 photo 1960Junsched.jpg

Roster Moves

June 3 – IF/OF Timothee Uguccione was demoted to AAA San Rafael. He wasn’t really doing all that well and Edgardo Herrera who I thought was going to win the utility job has been great in AAA.
Promoted IF Edgardo Herrera was promoted to Chicago after batting .331-5-23 in AAA and had a split of .331/.377/.518

June 7 – Released OF Antonio Polledo, there was no trade market for him and he refused a minor league assignment.
Promoted OF Jesus Ortiz from AAA San Rafael. He was batting .297-7-23 at AAA.

June 19 – Placed OF Ben Cook on the 15-day DL after he broke his hand while being hit by a pitch. He will be out 5 weeks.
Promoted OF Gonzalo Gonzalez from AAA San Rafael.

June 24 – Activated OF Lester Ellis from the 60-Day DL. He was out since Spring Training with a broken ankle.
OF Gonzalo Gonzalez was sent back to AAA.
Demoted RP John Taylor to AAA after he kept stinking up the joint from the bullpen.
Promoted SP Damon Morgan from AAA. The scout has been mentioning he was ready for about a month now. He was 4-2 3.65 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, 41 BB/70 K at San Rafael. Tommy Jimenez loses his starting spot and is back in the bullpen.

June 27 – OF Lester Ellis was placed on the 60-Day DL after re-injuring his ankle this time it was ankle ligaments. He will miss 2 months.
Promoted OF Jesus Quintana from AAA San Rafael. I wanted to give Jesus a fair shot at Chicago. He was filler at the beginning of the season but has performed well in San Rafael batting .282-1-10 and .282/.435/.359

I will hold off on the minor league update for a few more weeks.

Amateur Draft

I went with my scout's recommendations this season. I hope it was a good decision. For some reason he wanted me to take a CF in 4 of the first 5 picks. I pick 6th each round with no pick in the supplemental round.
Round 1 - CF John Patrick is 17 y/o and has superstar potential, average contact, outstanding power, good discipline but spotty defense.
Round 2 - CF Jim Henderson, 17 y/o, is an odd pick as my scout says he is not major league caliber but does say he does have above average contact ability.
Round 3 - CF Lee Lyons, 17 y/o is an impact bat according to the scout and can hit .290 with top of the charts power. Patient at the plate and above average defensively.
Round 4 - SP Roy Norman 18 y/o and projects to be a spot starter. has ok movement but makes a lot of mistakes.
Round 5 - CF Lester Allen 17 y/o who has superstar potential. Mediocre contact but plus plus power, very patient but lazy on defense.

July 1960

So April was a bad month, May we played well (for us) and played .500 ball. June was a bad month. July was a good month… until the All-Star Break. We were 9-9 until that point. Then we decided to go 1-9 afterward. I think the team thought it was a new month after the break.

 photo 1960Julstand.jpg
 photo 1960Julsched.jpg

We made one trade and it wasn’t the trade I thought I would make. I thought I would unload C Alonso Rocha, but it turns out I can’t read the other teams’ strengths as well as I thought I could. I was reading their Current and Potential columns backwards on the colored dots. Oops!

CHW Received:
22 y/o RP Bobby Bolden he was 4-2 3SV 1.41 ERA, 1.12 WHIP 29 BB/58 K in AAA Pleasant Hill. I think he can be a serviceable option for the bullpen next season. In fact, he is getting his trial right now in Chicago. I hope he sticks.
23 y/o RP Ralph Harrison he was 4-2 2 SV 1.35 ERA, 1.18 WHIP 18 BB/34 K in AAA Pleasant Hill. He also is getting his trial in Chicago right now.

HOU Received:
OF Ben White – The day he was put on a rehab assignment to AAA, Houston offered a trade to take him. This works for me for 2 reasons. 1. He has a -9.0 ZR in CF and in limited innings in LF was already -1.1. 2. Prior to my taking over the GM spot he had signed an extension for 300K next year and 650K the next 3 or 4 years after that. I was all too happy to unload that contract, and Houston wanted him! They are in the playoff hunt so hopefully this helps them out.
SP Damon Morgan – The trade they offered was not one I wanted to take, but since they showed some interest I countered and they didn’t like it at first. Then when I asked what it would take, one of the players mentioned was Morgan. That was the easiest trade decision I ever made.

What fans I had left did not like the fact that Ben White was traded.

DH Derek Barrett made the All-Star Team. He is a 4-time All-Star, he led MLB in Batting Average at the break (and still leads now).

RF Jesus Ortiz appears to be a hidden gem. He is batting .323-12-40 in 232 AB and has a split of .323/.339/.550 and a WAR of 1.8. Only Rocha and Barrett’s are higher.

CF Roland Cook appears to be the reincarnation of Ben White. He is batting a similar .307-1-18 but is much better at patrolling CF +6.5 ZR in 30 more innings than Ben White.

Things are so bad I am thinking of bringing all the kids up to pitch and let them take their lumps and see if anything is there.

Meet Young Stars

I wanted to introduce you to a few young players who are taking the league by storm.

First off, I want to introduce you to the front-runner candidate for the NL Pitcher of the Year award. 25 year old Diego Robles of the Montreal Expos. Diego is having a phenomenal season. Right now he is 18-4 with a 2.72 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP in 195 IP. He had 381 Ks last season and he has 281 this season at a pace of 13.0/9 ip just below last season's pace of 13.2/9. He is probably the best bargain in the league right now still on his minimum deal.
In his 2nd start of the season he went 8.2 IP allowed 2 H no runs and had 1 walk to go with 17 strikeouts!.
In his 3rd start of the season he pitched a 4-hit CG allowing 1 run and chalked up 18 strikeouts!

Next Up is the leading vote-getter of the NL 24 year old CF Ed Bailey of the Houston Astros. Ed is just in his 3rd season in the Major Leagues and is already a fan-favorite. He was the MVP last season with a .346-43-114 line. His average, SLG (.623), OPS (1.022) and WAR (11.0) all led the league along with his 223 hits. Right now he is leading the NL in HR with 27 and already has 111 RBI with roughly 50 games to play in the season. 154 RBI is the record set in 1940 so he would have to up his pace just a little bit if he were to catch that record,

Lastly, let's meet New York Yankees SS Maximo Galvan. Maximo is a little older than the rest he is 27 years old and is a 7-time All-Star, a 3-time Gold Glove and a 2-time World Champion. His best season was 1958 when he hit .327-33-111 and had an 8.0 WAR. He's had a few injuries this season which will hamper his season totals but he will end this season with around 1300 hits in his career. He will have an outside shot at 3000 and if he keeps performing like he has he will be a first-ballot HOFer.
