Developing Phillies prospects

This might not be too interesting to non-Phillies fans. Who knows, it might not even be interesting to Phillies fans but it's something that I want to try and by documenting it here I'll be able to look back and see how things have gone. I'm going to try to build a team with only players in the Phillies system. I've also traded for the prospects that they have acquired this year. I didn't force any of the trades so the players out aren't the same as real life. It actually took a lot more to acquire them so the team is pretty depleted. I still don't have Tirado from Toronto and Richy from the Dodgers. I'm hoping when a few players come off of the DL I can figure something out to get them.

I don't really have too many rules. The main one is that the only players that can play for the major league team are the ones that started with the Phillies or players that the real-life Phils have acquired so far this season. I can sign minor league FAs to fill out the minor league rosters and I'm controlling everything except minor league lineups. I can still be fired but I might change that. I haven't really changed any settings and I'm using 20-80 ratings and stars for overalls.

Here my basic plan. It's an experiment in development.
  • I'm going to try to keep everyone, or least the top prospects, happy. Mostly I'm going to try to do this with good team and individual performance. I'm trying to put the prospects at a level where they can be successful and I'm also going to try to make each minor league team competitive and hopefully challenging for league titles.
  • I tried to hire the best coaches I could for the minor league teams, prefereably those who work well with youngsters.
  • I also signed a few minor league FAs with high leadership, work ethic, and intelligence. I'll try to put them at levels where they should be pretty good players since I don't need to challenge them because I'm not worried about their development. I'll also try to draft a lot of high character guys.
  • Speaking of the draft, I'm going to draft all of the 2015 Phillie draft picks if I can.
  • I'm not going to set the minor league lineups but any prospect who reaches 2.5 star potential, I'll force start them at their future position.
  • There's also a lot of leftover money since I traded most of the veterans so I'm putting some extra money into development.

I don't know how many updates I'll do. How the season went, top prospect lists, who's panning out, who busts, and who comes out of nowhere to contribute at the major league level.

The opening day roster is pretty bad. We're predicted to go 39-123. On the bright side, the farm system is currently ranked 6th.

2015 wrap

The Phillies avoided 100 losses, finishing 64-98. Not too bad after a 2-20 start. Ken Giles (2.21, 42 SV) made the AS team. Cord Phelps (.272, 14 HR) was the July rookie of the month and might be able to stick around as a bench piece next year. Odubel Herrera had a strong half-season putting up 1.9 WAR in 241 PA. The team will look a lot different next season and it's possible that none of the opening day starters will be starting in 2016.

2015 short season wrap

The draft added a few 2.5 star potential prospects to the organization. IF/OF Cornelius Randolph, 2B/CF Scott Kingery, 2B/3B/OF Lucas Williams, and 1B/OF Greg Pickett. I haven't really figured out where these guys will end up playing yet. They all have weird/interesting defensive profiles.

Williamsport went out 3-1 in the 1st round to the Tri-City ValleyCats. C Deivi Grullon led the team with 2.7 WAR and finished 3rd in the MVP voting.

The GCL team lost 4-3 to MIA GCL in the finals after beating BOS GCL 3-2 and DET GCL 4-3. CF Enmanuel Garcia (2.2) led the team in WAR and won a GG. 2105 draftee Skylar Hunter won pitcher of the year and finished 3rd in the MVP. Carlos Salazar and Luis Morales finished 2nd and 3rd in pitcher of the year.

The DSL team missed the playoffs. C Lenin Rodriguez (1.6) had the highest WAR among prospects. FA signee OF Roberto Lopez, the oldest player in the DSL, won MVP.

The VSL team won what appears to be a 1 game playoff against the VSL Cubs. 2015 draftee 1B Brendan Hayden (2.2 WAR) won the MVP and SP Jose Taveras (2.0 WAR) won pitcher of the year and finished 3rd in the MVP voting.

Thanks. I thought it would be fun to see which prospects pan out and if I could win with a totally home grown team.

Spring training 2016

After a 12-14 spring, the Phillies are projected to go 69-93. The roster is still pretty weak but there are a few pieces in place.

2016 wrap

The Phillies won on the last day of the season to avoid 100 losses, finishing 63-99. Injuries were the theme of the year, especially in the OF and at 1B. Ken Giles (2.91, 35 SV) made the AS team again. JP Crawford (.285/.376/.419, 10HR, 35 SB, 5.9 WAR) and Maikel Franco (.267/.319/.474, 25 HR, 3.9 WAR) fnished 2nd and 3rd in the ROY voting but there weren't a lot of positives elsewhere. Odubel Herrera (2.2) and Chad Billingsley (2.1) were the only other players to top 2 WAR. David Montgomery is upset and I had to click the "cannot be fired" button.

Opening day 2017

The Phillies went an even 13-13 in the spring and are predicted to finish 2017 with a 79-83 record. The position overview still does not look good but there were some encouraging signs in spring. Nick Williams hit .407, Maikel Franco hit 10 HR, and Cody Asche and JP Crawford joined them with wOBAs over .400.
