Monday April 6th

The Padres came to town for the opening series this year, and the Dodgers took the first game 2-0 in 11 innings. Both starters had great outings, each of them going 8 innings without allowing a run. For the Padres, Andrew Cashner allowed just 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. Kershaw, on the other hand, allowed only 1 hit and set the National League regular season game record for strikeouts with 12 (for some reason single-game records were not imported into my game, so we could see a lot of these). Joc Pederson hit a walk-off 2 run homer in the bottom of the 11th with Puig on first to win it. Paco Rodriguez (1-0) came in and pitched the top of the 11th and got the win, while Joaquin Benoit (0-1) got the loss.

Tuesday April 7th

The Dodgers improved to 2-0 with a 4-3 win over the Padres. For the Dodgers, Zack Greinke went 6 innings, allowing 8 hits, 2 earned runs, and striking out 7. Tyson Ross pitched 5 innings for the Padres allowing 5 hits, 3 earned runs, striking out 1, and walking 7 batters. Pedro Baez (1-0) blew the save for the Dodgers but ended up getting the win while Joaquin Benoit got his second loss for the Padres. Pinch hitter/2nd baseman Justin Turner drove in Jimmy Rollins as the winning run with a SAC fly in the bottom of the 8th, and Joel Peralta came in and pitched the 9th for his first save of the season. Adrian Gonzalez hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot off Tyson Ross in the 5th.

Wednesday April 8th

The Dodgers won 9-7 in a high scoring game to complete their sweep of the Padres. Starter Brandon McCarthy (1-0) got the win in this one, going 8 strong innings with 6 Ks only 1 run allowed. Shields started the game for the Padres and got the loss. He only lasted 3 innings, allowing 5 earned runs, and was traded to the Orioles after the game to cap off a really bad day. The Padres made it interesting, scoring 6 runs in the 9th before Yimi Garcia came in and struck out 2 batters to earn his first save of the season. Yasiel Puig had a great game today, going 2-for-3 with a 3 run homer in the 4th inning, a walk, and scored 3 runs. Yasmani Grandal also went 2-for-3 with a walk, but he scored 2 runs and hit 2 RBI.

Thursday April 9th

The Dodgers had an off day today before a 3 game series against the Diamondbacks (2-1) in Arizona.

Friday April 10th

The Dodgers lose their first game of the season 6-5 to Arizona. The starter Brett Anderson lasted 6 innings for the Dodgers, allowing 4 runs, 3 of them earned. The opposing starter, Daniel Hudson, went 5 innings, also allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 6. Addison Reed (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Diamondback while Yimi Garcia (0-1) was the loser after giving up a walk-off single to Paul Goldschmidt in the bottom of the 9th. Carl Crawford was a double away from the cycle today, and Adrian Gonzalez hit his 2nd home run this season in the 5th inning. It was a bad day at the plate for our catchers as Grandal had 2 errors, and then A.J. Ellis came in and made another.

Saturday April 11th

The Dodgers lost again, this time 4-1. It was a bit of a rough game for them after their starting pitcher, Freddy Garcia, was injured in the first inning. The team trainers have informed us that Garcia will most likely be healthy for his next start. Yimi Garcia (0-2) came in to replace him and ended up with the loss after allowing 2 runs in 1.2 innings. The Diamondbacks' starter Andrew Chafin (1-0) went 7 innings, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits, good enough for the win.

Sunday April 12th

The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 2-0 in the last game of this series. Kershaw (1-0) won another pitchers duel, this time going 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, no runs, striking out 9, and getting hit first win of the season. Josh Collmenter (0-2) went 8 innings and allowed only 1 run for the Diamondbacks, but he got no support from his offense and ended up with the loss. Pack Rodriguez got his first save of the year for the Dodgers. The Dodgers scored their runs from an Adrian Gonzalez SAC fly and a Joc Pederson (2nd) home run.

The Dodgers finish the week with a 4-2 record, putting them in a tie for first with the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers were ranked 9th in the latest power rankings.

Jose Abreu (White Sox) was the AL player of the week.

Anthony Rizzo (Cubs) was the NL player of the week.

Monday April 13th

We're back in LA for a 3 game set against the 2-4 Seattle Mariners. Seattle scored the first run in the 2nd inning on an RBI double by Seth Smith, but the Dodgers took the lead in the 4th inning, in which they put 3 runs on the board, and added 2 more in the 5th. Those 5 runs were good enough to win it behind a great performance from the starter Zack Greinke (1-0), who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings, struck out 6, and got the win. Paco Rodriguez came in and got the save in the 9th, his 2nd this year. Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 doubles, and a steal for the Dodgers. J.A. Happ (0-1) started the game for the Mariners, and he went 5 innings, allowing 5 runs, 3 earned, and got the loss. Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the Mariners.

Tuesday April 14th

This game looked hopeless through 6.2 innings of 1 hit ball by Mariners' SP James Paxton, but he had to leave the game with an injury, and the Dodgers scored 2 runs with a Carl Crawford RBI double off of Yoervis Medina (0-1), who got the loss and blew the save. Brandon McCarthy (2-0) got the win for the Dodgers, going 8 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 7. J.P. Howell came in and got his first save of the year as the Dodgers won 2-1.

Dodgers April 2015 in Review:

The Dodgers got off to a fantastic start this season.

April 15-6, .714
TOTAL 18-6, .750

Offensively:
.250 batting average ranks 7th in the NL
.316 on-base percentage ranks 2nd in the NL
91 runs scored ranks 8th in the NL
18 home runs is tied for 7th in the NL

Defensively:
2.32 starters' ERA ranks 1st in the NL
2.73 bullpen ERA ranks 7th in the NL
62 runs allowed ranks 1st in the NL
219 strikeouts ranks 4th in the NL

Our superb pitching staff has made up for our average hitting, especially thanks to our #1 rotation.

Clayton Kershaw - 5 starts, 3-0, 1.46 ERA, 0.65 WHIP
Zack Greinke - 5 starts, 3-0, 3.18 ERA, 0.97 WHIP
Brandon McCarthy - 5 starts, 3-1, 1.47 ERA, 0.82 WHIP
Brett Anderson - 5 starts, 2-2, 3.15 ERA, 1.05 WHIP
Freddy Garcia - 4 starts, 2-1, 2.31 ERA, 1.16 WHIP

Don't know what to say about these 5 guys other than that they've been amazing at the beginning of the season. Here's a look at our minor league rotation.

Joe Wieland - 5 starts, 2-3, 5.81 ERA, 1.56 WHIP
Mike Bolsinger - 5 starts, 0-3, 5.18 ERA, 1.77 WHIP
Rudy Owens - 1 start, 0-1, 31.50 ERA, 3.50 WHIP
David Huff - 5 starts, 2-0, 2.51 ERA, 0.84 WHIP
Scott Baker - 4 starts, 0-0, 4.76 ERA, 1.63 WHIP

David Huff is the clear first choice if a callup is necessary. Wieland is probably second in line since he's already on the 40-man roster.

The bullpen hasn't been quite as great as the rotation, but they've still done a good job.

Pedro Baez - 5 games, 1-0, 1.23 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
Joel Peralta - 9 games, 1-0, 1 SV, 0.82 ERA, 0.91 WHIP
Juan Nicasio - 5 games, 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP
Jeff Locke - 1 game, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
J.P. Howell - 9 games, 2-0, 1 SV, 2.08 ERA, 1.04 WHIP
Chris Hatcher - 7 games, 0-0, 8.44 ERA, 2.25 WHIP
Paco Rodriguez - 14 games, 1-0, 10 SV, 0.71 ERA, 0.71 WHIP

The first thing I notice about this bullpen is that not one of these pitchers has a loss this year. The second thing I notice is Chris Hatcher's ERA. If he doesn't improve soon, he could find himself down in AAA. 24 year old Paco Rodriguez has been absolutely dominating the closer role. Here's a look at who we've got in AAA Oklahoma City.

David Aardsma - 7 games, 0-0, 7.45 ERA, 1.45 WHIP
Chin-hui Tsao - 8 games, 1-0, 3.29 ERA, 1.24 WHIP
Carlos Frias - 5 games, 4 starts, 1-1, 3.00 ERA, 0.95 WHIP
Sergio Santos - 10 games, 3-0, 4.22 ERA, 1.50 WHIP
Ryan Buchter - 10 games, 0-0, 1.80 ERA, 0.87 WHIP
Dustin Richardson - 2 games, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP
Adam Liberatore - 10 games, 1-0, 5 SV, 5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP
Daniel Coulombe - 9 games, 1-0, 2 SV, 0.00 ERA, 0.57 WHIP
Yimi Garcia - 1 game, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP

We have some good options here. Garcia struggled in the majors at the beginning of the year, but if he does well in AAA I would definitely consider giving him another shot.

Catchers have been decent so far this year. Grandal has been starting against righties, and Ellis vs lefties.

Yasmani Grandal - 17 games, .283, 1 HR, 9 RBI, .424 OBP
A.J. Ellis - 11 games, .222, 0 HR, 3 RBI, .244 OBP

Grandal has clearly been better, but A.J. Ellis has started to pick it up lately after a slow start. I'm curious to see if the switch-hitting Grandal will be able to earn the full time job at some point. We have 3 catchers in Oklahoma City.

Austin Barnes - 21 games, .214, 1 HR, 6 RBI, .256 OBP
Brian Ward - 3 games, .222, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .300 OBP
Ralph Henriquez - 6 games, .357, 0 HR, 2 RBI, .438 OBP

I'm not very happy with any of these options, but if Grandal or Ellis gets injured I'll almost definitely go with Barnes.

The Dodgers infield has provided most of the offense.

Adrian Gonzalez - 22 games, .312, 6 HR, 19 RBI, .337 OBP
Howie Kendrick - 19 games, .299, 0 HR, 3 RBI, .373 OBP
Juan Uribe - 20 games, .250, 1 HR, 9 RBI, .265 OBP
Jimmy Rollins - 24 games, .233, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .329 OBP
Jordan Pacheco - 4 games, .400, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .400 OBP
Alex Guerrero - 20 games, .333, 1 HR, 7 RBI, .397 OBP

The weak link here seems to be Uribe, and I, like my owner, would like to look into acquiring an upgrade at some point during the season. The only infielder who isn't really getting any playing time is Pacheco, but the 29 year old has done well in his 5 at bats for the Dodgers, so I'm hoping he'll continue to be an effective pinch hitter. Here are our AAA options.

Justin Turner - 12 games, .273, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .353 OBP
Darwin Barney - 23 games, .214, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .238 OBP
Buck Britton - 7 games, .435, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .500 OBP
Enrique Hernandez - 23 games, .275, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .340 OBP
Daniel Mayora - 5 games, .154, 0 HR, 1 RBI, .214 OBP
Lars Anderson - 21 games, .204, 0 HR, 6 RBI, .267

Justin Turner is next in line if something happens, since he's doing well and is already on the 40-man roster. He was in the majors at the beginning of the year and didn't do well, but he only had 8 at-bats so I'm more than willing to give him another shot. Barney is also on the 40-man, but I'd likely call up Hernandez before Barney.

The outfield looks a bit weak with Crawford out for 10 more days, but once he returns it should be alright.

Yasiel Puig - 24 games, .240, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .272 OBP
Joc Pederson - 24 games, .174, 3 HR, 9 RBI, .277 OBP
Andre Ethier - 2 games, .000, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .000 OBP
Jeremy Hazelbaker - 0 games, .000, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .000 OBP
Scott Van Slyke - 15 games, .190, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .320 OBP

Once Crawford returns I think I'll either demote Pederson or Hazelbaker, depending on how Hazelbaker performs. I was seriously considering demoting Pederson for Hazelbaker right before Crawford got hurt, so it's good to see who'll come out on top. I'd like to see Ethier get some more playing time. Here's a look at AAA.

Brian Burgamy - 16 games, .214, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .214 OBP
Chris Heisey - 23 games, .258, 3 HR, 10 RBI, .305 OBP
Matt Carson - 11 games, .235, 1 HR, 4 RBI, .278 OBP
Kyle Jensen - 23 games, .211, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .284 OBP
Scott Schebler - 20 games, .192, 2 HR, 12 RBI, .250 OBP

Heisey is the top choice and could see some time in the majors if someone gets injured or if Pederson and Hazelbaker don't perform.

May 2015 in Review

April - 15-6
May - 18-11
TOTAL - 33-17

We are 6 games ahead of the Diamondbacks in the division.

Offensively:
.243 batting average ranks 9th in the NL
.312 OBP ranks 7th in the NL
189 runs scored is tied for 8th in the NL
28 home runs ranks 8th in the NL

Defensively:
2.55 starters' ERA ranks 1st in the NL
2.39 bullpen ERA ranks 2nd in the NL
136 runs allowed ranks 1st in the NL
420 strikeouts ranks 4th in the NL

The offense is just average, and our outstanding pitching is clearly carrying our team.

Pitching rotation:

Clayton Kershaw - 11 starts, 6-2, 1.65 ERA, 0.78 WHIP
Zack Greinke - 11 starts, 6-0, 3.21 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
Brandon McCarthy - 10 starts, 5-2, 2.21 ERA, 1.01 WHIP

Juan Nicasio - 12 games, 0 starts, 1-1, 1 SV, 2.70 ERA, 1.70 WHIP

Nicasio has been moved into the rotation, replacing Freddy Garcia, who was moved to the bullpen. We'll see if Don Mattingly's decision works out. Here's a look at the rotation in AAA.

Joe Wieland - 11 starts, 5-6, 4.68 ERA, 1.58 WHIP
Mike Bolsinger - 10 starts, 3-5, 2.75 ERA, 1.38 WHIP
David Huff - 10 starts, 5-2, 4.47 ERA, 1.26 WHIP
Rudy Owens - 6 starts, 2-2, 5.40 ERA, 1.63 WHIP
Scott Baker - 10 starts, 1-2, 4.39 ERA, 1.44 WHIP

Bolsinger is the clear choice to be brought up in case of an injury. Now a look at the bullpen.

Pedro Baez - 18 games, 2-0, 1.35 ERA, 0.90 WHIP
Joel Peralta - 15 games, 1-1, 1 SV, 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP
Freddy Garcia - 9 starts, 3-3, 3.46 ERA, 1.17 WHIP
Jeff Locke - 5 games, 0-0, 1 SV, 0.00 ERA, 0.95 WHIP
J.P. Howell - 20 games, 3-0, 2 SV, 1.04 ERA, 1.04 WHIP
Chris Hatcher - 17 games, 1-2, 4.96 ERA, 1.59 WHIP
Paco Rodriguez - 23 games, 1-0, 16 SV, 1.29 ERA, 0.76 WHIP

No adjustments necessary here, but here's what we have down in AAA.

Sean O'Sullivan - 1 game, 0-0, 9.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP

Kenley Jansen - 2 games, 0-0, 1 SV, 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP

Kenley Jansen's rehab is going well, but I'd like to see him pitch more before bringing him back up. Garcia is also pitching well and could get another shot at the majors if we need him. Now for the catching situation.

Yasmani Grandal - 39 games, .231, 2 HR, 15 RBI, .323 SLG
A.J. Ellis - 30 games, .222, 0 HR, 5 RBI, .296 SLG

Justin Turner - 13 games, .281, 0 HR, 8 RBI, .375 SLG

* Alex Guerrero - 31 games, .305, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .402 SLG (out for 3 weeks)

Hernandez is likely the guy who'll be sent down in a couple weeks when Guerrero returns. Here're our minor leaguers.

Darwin Barney - 49 games, .275, 2 HR, 22 RBI, .382 SLG
Buck Britton - 29 games, .216, 2 HR, 11 RBI, .333 SLG
O'Koyea Dickson - 16 games, .419, 1 HR, 10 RBI, .565 SLG
Lars Anderson - 33 games, .188, 0 HR, 3 RBI, .188 SLG
Daniel Mayora - 12 games, .148, 0 HR, 3 RBI, .148 SLG

Darwin Barney is a definite option, and if Dickson keeps it up he could be too. Here are out MLB outfielders.

Yasiel Puig - 49 games, .246, 7 HR, 22 RBI, .414 SLG
Chris Heisey - 8 games, .286, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .571 SLG

* Joc Pederson - 30 games, .178, 3 HR, 10 RBI, .299 SLG

Pederson will likely be sent to AAA when healthy.

Brian Burgamy - 25 games, .235, 0 HR, 2 RBI, .353 SLG
Darnell Sweeney - 23 games, .253, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .387 SLG
Matt Carson - 26 games, .233, 2 HR, 9 RBI, .383 SLG
Jeremy Hazelbaker - 30 games, .301, 6 HR, 16 RBI, .544 SLG
Scott Schebler - 46 games, .235, 6 HR, 26 RBI, .374 SLG
Travis Witherspoon - 3 games, .429, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .714 SLG
Peter Lavin - 2 games, .286, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .429

Note: I'm trying out a new format for league news, please let me know if you like it or if you prefer the old version.

Breaking news here on SportsCenter as the Dodgers' claim on the former Arizona Diamondback first baseman Nick Evans went through today. The Dodgers, who want to send Evans to triple-A, will actually have to waive him again since he is out of option years. Evans hit .368 with two homers and 4 RBI off the bench for Arizona this year.

Now time for our baseball roundup here on SportsCenter, first let's take a look at Nationals pitcher Blake Treinan's performance tonight against the Rays. He threw 9 shutout innings, allowing only four hits in Washington's 10-nothing win. This season Treinan has compiled a 4-3 record with a 2.47 ERA in 9 starts. Our next story is that Carlos Gomez of the Brewers is out for 3 weeks with a fractured foot. He is hitting .338 with 8 homers and 20 RBI this season. We've also got a report that the GM of the Dodgers is upset with manager Don Mattingly for taking Andre Ethier out of the starting lineup in favor of Chris Heisey. General Manager George Anderings reportedly made the Van Slyke for Rios trade specifically because Mattingly refused to bench Van Slyke for Ethier, and apparently Anderings is threatening to deal Heisey as well. We've got our top analyst Jimmy on the phone here, Jimmy, what's your take on this? Will the Dodgers deal Heisey? Is Mattingly in danger of losing his job? Well Mattingly really doesn't have to worry about losing his job, his team has the best record in baseball, and I don't think he'll back down in this situation. I've heard that the only viable trade options for the Dodgers is a Heisey for Alejandro De Aza deal, but Anderings is reluctant to pull the trigger because Mattingly said that he would start De Aza over Ethier as well. I predict that if Heisey plays well for the next week or two he'll stay, and if not, he'll be off to Baltimore.
