Expansion Seattle Mariners - Stats Only

I am starting a Historical Replay of the Seattle Mariners, starting with their 1977 Expansion. I will be playing stats only, except for Fielding and Speed. Granted, there will be some name recognition but based on what I'm seeing, the vast majority of players are unknowns to me.

I will be using the AI Player Evaluation Settings of 67/22/11 with Trading Difficulty set to Average/Neutral. Player Ratings are set to OOTP Engine, rather than Auto Recalc.

My first step will be trying to set the 1976 Amateur Draft to June instead of November because when I start the game up, it tries to give me #2 pick in the 1977 Amateur Draft (Toronto Blue Jays #1)

The 1976 Amateur Draft has been completed!

Some big picks were Eddie Murray to the Astros, Lou Whitaker to the Braves, Alan Trammell to the Twins, and Jack Morris going completely undrafted. He was picked in the 2nd round in my Test League, so I'm not sure why that happened. He's listed as "Fragile" although the Scouting Report sings his praises.

Playoffs saw 3 of the 4 real playoff teams , with the Phillies beating out the Big Red Machine in the NLCS, and ultimately sweep the Yankees in the WS.

The Expansion Draft is complete, and let me assure you - we are finishing dead last this season. There were only about 60 players eligible for the draft, I'm guessing because the historical database only shows players with MLB experience. So be it!

My first pick was a fellow with national prominance from the NL West champ Cincinatti Reds - SS Dave Concepcion. I'm not sure why the Reds gave up on him, although he did have season ending surgery in August of last season to remove bone chips from his elbow, so that could be why. I have him under control for two more seasons before he hits Free Agency. After his really good season in 1974, he's been alright but not superb. Assuming he is healthy, he will put butts in the seats and play solid defense.

The next pick was another player left unprotected by the Reds... He led their team in Innings pitched and wins, with an impressive 4.9 WAR. Scouting report is not crazy about him, saying he's a middle of the rotation guy. I'm interested to know why the Reds left these guys out there.

3rd pick was when things started getting thin. There were very few pitchers on the board so I grabbed this guy Tippy martinez. Scouts call him a back of the bullpen reliever, but he did put up decent numbers in 30 innings last year. Scary walk rate however.

I have no money for free agents. That's fine, I don't want to waste money at this point anyway. I'd like to see what I've got. I predict a historically bad campaign. I'm a bit confused at how my attendance in 1976 was 1.9m when we didn't exist. I'm happy to see the fan interest, lets hope it doesn't crumble with I lose 140 games.

I am glad to see my owner is willing to give me some time to get my feet wet. Its going to be a challenge to meet some of those goals I think. 5 years is going to way too short to get this team to the playoffs. I guess you never know.

Salaries look fine. I'm going to have to get used to thinking in terms of a total payroll of $1.3m. Concepcion making 25% of team's payroll.

Hmm I only have 25 players total, with 19 hitters and 6 pitchers. Not sure how I make this work with no money. I may have to sign some scrubs and really rough it the first year. I tried making some scrub FA offers, but my owner won't allow it.. Do I have to trade Concepcion already? I guess I'll sit on the sidelines until some players are ready to accept minor league contracts.

HOF Election Results are in for the 1977 class.

Only two got in, Ernie Banks and Jim Bunning.

I had voted for Ernie Banks, Don Drysdale, Eddie Matthews, Robin Roberts, and Duke Snider

We've now made it to the Pre-Season, and there are some mediocre players that have gone unsigned to this point. My Finances have cleared up and I have 846,000 dollars to spend. I may spend it on these aging stars (Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Henry Aaron). I know they will be horrible but they will sell tickets. I don't even have a clue what the garbage I got in the Expansion Draft will do.

So i went through and basically signed anyone who had a pulse and would accept a minor league deal.

I did sign Brooks Robinson, Hank Aaron, and Frank Robinson to contracts. I'd like to see if they have any magic left, although I'm quite positive they do not.

My only legit signing was Dick Drago who had 36 saves for the Angels last year. I gave him a 3 year act at $110k per year. He did have a lot of luck, with that .210 BABIP but still, he is better than the zombies I have on my staff.

Spring Training is about to launch. Let's have a look at what the Preseason Predictions have in store for our Seattle Mariners.

118 losses! Well, at least its better than the Blue Jays.
Yankees looking like the team to beat again after winning the WS.
Didn't realize Reggie Jackson ever played for the Orioles!

Yikes a team ERA of 5.40 for me.
