League of Professional Clubs

More Than A Game
January, 21, 1871

The debate has been fierce by many tradional Americans who feel there is little time for American adults to play games. An even more fierce opposition from the same group of people feel it is a total waste to actually pay adults to play these games. Conflicts with Indians and at the Mexican border as well as a country that just came out of the great Civil War surely feel that adults have many more responsible things to do then the play games.

There is a group of brave men however who see opportunity here as the game of baseball has greatly grown over the past few decades and now many are almost demanding to see the best talent in the nation take it to the field. The youth of the landscape afterall will be the ones playing and benefiting from the games, and the promotion of physical play and sportsmanship after all has been something of long tradition as we have learned from the Ancient Greeks.

Baseball is here to stay and a group of investors are banking on it. Eight of the top owners in the league lead by the likes of Harry Wright who is said to be not only one of the best players to play but also one of its most innovative minds. Eight cities and franchises have been chosen and players of all backgrounds are being considered for a professional league. In fact the name of the league shall be the League of Professional Baseball Clubs; or LOPC.

The franchises will be introduced but before that in order to keep the league competitive, the top talent in the land will be allocated before the amateur draft.

*** This will be a random player league with everything else following real baseball history. I am using the Spritze database which includes Asian stars.**

Mr. Jack Fournier Is the First Man To Sign
March 1, 1871

The teams crunched the numbers and the most talented ball players in the nation and then it came time to choose. After a random draw, which some among the owners did not appreciate, the Philadelphia Athetics had the right to choose any player in the game as the first choice for the league going into 1971.

Meet Jack Fournier, a 27 year old first baseman from Au Sable, Michigan. Fournier is a star with the bat where he can hit line drive lasers for all to see as he has played for local teams accross the land. Still some are concerned about a first overall pick not being able to field at an acceptable level, something Fournier has been accused of. Fournier is close to 200 lbs and is an imposing force who also can run very well.

"He is a pillar of what an organization should start with" said A's owner Apolo Creed. "He is in the prime of his physical and mental abilities and will give the people of Philadelphia the fighter they are looking for."

The remainder of the talent was then distributed throughout the league as more then 150 players made up the remainder of the rosters with known stars of the game joining young talent to build the core of this first season.

In addition the league agreed to a 30 game schedule and a winning "World Series" at the end of the season to determine an overall champion. News sources all across the nation are writing up news on the rosters of the new teams and which team is more likely to be the best once the games begin. Never has there been an assortment of talent like what we have seen put together with this league.

1871 Season Preview

BALTIMORE CANARIES

Projected record: 15-15
Owner: Bill Craver
Manager: Jesse Tucker (0-0)
Ball Park: Newington Park (40,000)

The Canaries are expected to be in the middle of the pack with their two main stars being third baseman Pete Reiser and pitcher Big Jack Katoll. Katoll is a big German arm who will anchor the pitching group but don’t sleep on a few other arms the Canaries have on their roster, especially Art Mehaffy who is only 22 years old. The Canaries have the biggest field in the league at Newington Park and huge crowds are expected to follow this team. Still there is no true star power to speak up but rather a younger team that is hungry to compete for owner BillCraver.

“Were gonna win” says Craver, as rumors circulate that this team eventually will leave Baltimore once New York is ready for them. "We have no intention of talking about or moving to another city, Baltimore is our home and we plan to play and win here." It has been an obvious omission for the early league that there is no outstanding franchise in New York City, home of much of the birth of the game and the legendary New York Knickerbocker club.

BOSTON RED STOCKINGS

Projected record: 11-19
Owner:
Manager: Harry Wright
Ball Park: South End Grounds (10,000)
Top prospect: Ed Seward P

The Red Stockings will follow the lead of their manager Harry Wright who knows the game likely better than anyone and is keen on proving his type of baseball will win. Ed Seward is only an 18 year old pitcher who will get the call for this team, his skill set is rare but polished. Joe Tinker and the offense may lack in power but should follow Wright's strategy to manufacture runs.

Too many feel that this team is too high on inexperience and any real run at consistent winning is still a way off; Mr. Wright has his work cut out for him and may need more then one season to build a winner.Still if anyone knows Harry Wright, he loves to build a winner and is at his best working from the bottom up.

BROOKLYN ATLANTICS

Projected record: 20-10
Manager: David Cookson
Home Field: Capitoline Grounds
Top prospect: Rick Rueschel

Here come the favorites as many expect this club to win the championship. The number one prospect in the game is big pitching star Rich Rueschel who throws not hard but crafty and many expect him to help lift this team into contention. Joe Cronin and Garry Maddox are great defensive talents and no one can go get the baseball like the Atlantics. Stan Lopata is a leader at catcher. while Freddy Sanchez is a slick performer.

This team will surely be hard to score on and will be fun to watch come together. The Atlantics recruit well and have the makings of maybe the most advanced baseball club in the nation that many would love to be a part of.

CHICAGO WHITE STOCKINGS

Projected record: 16-14
Manager: Jimmy Wood
Home Field: Union baseball grounds (10,000)
Top prospect: Dave S Anderson

Jimmy Wood and the Whites may have some of the biggest following in the league and expect to play like a winner. Dallas Braden will get the chance to throw the most innings but Stubby Overmire and Dontrelle Willis are ready to do their part. Jake Stahl and Al Bridwell round off a good offense while 34 year old Wee Willie Keeler may be the most famous reserve in the league do to his innovation to the game itself.

No stars and team baseball is part of what this team believes in, but there do remain a great deal of unproven talent that can be a boom or bust for this team with the multitude of fans in the Midwest.

CINCINNATI REDS

Projected record: 14-16
Manager: Gil Lopez
Home Field: Avenue Grounds
Top prospect: Yasiel Puig

If there ever was a team made to win on paper and a team that should capture the imagination of the new league, it would be none other then the Red Stockings. Lou Gehrig and Yasiel Puig are two colossal stars with Gehrig being the known hero and Puig the raw talent with much to learn. Even beyond these two however there is Moises Alou and an order that should score a lot of runs. Oscar Judd could the wild card on the mound but at 35 years of age wont be intimidated by the youth.

There is a legacy here and the Reds have gone out of their way to preserve it and create the deepest roster that they could. Watching Gehrig take some of the final swings of his career finally as a professional is well deserved and something the nation will long to see. But , can they win?

CLEVELAND FOREST CITYS

Projected record: 17-13
Manager: Charlie Pabor
Home Field: National Association Grounds
Top prospect: Pat Tabler

Many feel this Cleveland team has what it takes to make the city proud of their local ball club. Catcher Mike Scioscia is said to be as smart and as influencial on this team as is manager Charlie Pabor. Scioscia will have the talents of Mike Flanagan and Cole Hamels. Flanagan is said to be the more steady choice on the mound while Hamels is interesting as the more talented option. Much of the attention is focused on Matt Williams who is said to have the power of an Ox and can hit the ball well into Lake Erie.

Whatever the case this team has depth and talent and is one of the favorite choices to take home the first pennant. The team even has an import from Japan in Masato Yoshi.

PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS

Projected record: 18-12
Manager: Dick McBride
Home Field: Jefferson Street Grounds
Top prospect: Carl Morton

The Athletics appeared to be the favorites by most that know the game going into the season. Philly had the top pick in the draft and took Jack Fournier the powerful and talented first baseman while Adonis Terry and his assortment of pitches take the mound. On top of all this, the Athletics have the motivation of manager Dick McBride who is identified as an elder of the game already. Jeff Conine and Kevin Seitzer add to a good offense in a lineup and an organization that has really been put together quite well.

“Being the favorite isn’t always a curse or a bad thing” says McBride “It actually means that a good group of people see something good in what your doing”

ST. LOUIS BROWNS

Projected record: 13-17
Manager: Chris Tenney
Home Field: Grand Avenue Park (40,000)
Top prospect: Ray Lankford

A duo of youth and ability will be the centerpiece of this St. Louis team as Jeffrey Leonard and Ray Lankford both can swing the bat with power and run the outfield with grace. Lankford is especially expected to be a star as he is only 22 and plays with a confidence. Trying to get scouts to believe that Harry Jordan can be a top arm in the league is a bit more mixed but Chris Bosio and George Mullin are ready to step up; Mullin especially at 23 years of age is an interesting player.

St. Louis is the gateway to the west and they feel that building a winner in this league will enhance them nationally with a reputation they desire. The entire city is behind the club, who are using baseball as their springboard.

TOP PROSPECTS of 1871

The scouting experts as well as the national media have also come out with their two top players in the new leage. The top position player in the game was the top draft choice, Jack Fournier of the Philadelphia Athletics is the player to watch.

The top pitcher in the game is the same as the top prospect when talking about Rick Rueschel of the Brooklyn Atlantics. The young hurler already has earned the nickname of "Big Daddy".

Snyder has big day, Forest Citys Win League Opener
Saturday, April 1, 1871

Over 1500 spectators came out to the National association grounds to witness the opening game of the new league and new season of profesional ball. A cool day will be remembered for the fine play on the field but n the end it is a historic day for all who love the sport.

The Cleveland Forest Citys put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the Baltimore Canaries 12-5 in the season opener at National Association Grounds. Center Fielder Russ Snyder won player of the game plaudits for Cleveland. He went 4-4 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 2.

Jack E Wilson was a key contributor to the win for the Forest Citys. In the bottom of the third with two out, the light-hitting shortstop stroked a single to right-center. He was 2-5 with 2 singles.

"Getting a lot of baserunners and getting some timely hits, it's a good combination," said Snyder.

Jordan and St. Louis Grab Early Press
May 1, 1871

We were all wondering how St. Louis would do in the new season going up against the bigger and more known teams in the land. To open the new league and season, it is the Browns who won 4 out of their first five games and did so behind the masterful pitching of their ace Harry Jordan.

Jordan has thrown two complete game shutouts, one against Philadelphia and the other against Cleveland. Jordan, at 21 years of age, wasnt suppose to be one of the dominant arms in the game but has indeed pitched like a master.

Jordan

Young Ray Lankford is hitting .435 for the team while Billy Werber is at .429 including a five hit game in Philadelphia.

Another star of the early season has been Yasiel Puig of the Cincinnati Reds who is hittiing .500 in the four games he has played including a long home run. The Reds have not ben as lucky with their pitching as Oscar Judd has struggled to two losses and a 6.20 ERA.

Puig

All Star Game Good Idea?
July 1, 1871

At the midseason point of the season most all doubters of the new league will have to be ignored as thousands of spectators have found joy and solace in the new league. Not that things have not been perfect, as the issue of alcohol and carousing among the players is still an issue, especially among some of the young ages of the players.

Things have gone so well in fact that owners are now deciding if a midseason showcase of "all stars", where all the best players of the league gather for a fun performance and game would be a good idea. There have been some nay voices on the idea as teams do not want to risk some of their best talent in such a game since professional players are now an investment and being paid. There has been no official anouncement on a decision, but obviously such a game would make a good profit for the league.

It seems in the pennant race that there are two teams that are making a run at the championship. It is the Brooklyn Atlantics who won 10 games in a row and are lead by 12 game winner Rick Rueschel. On the other side the Philadelhia Athletics have also won 12 games and have scored the most runs in the league.

Ellis Clary leads the league in hitting at the half way point with a .456 average with 36 hits.

Philly Runs Off 14 Straight
August 1, 1871

These have been very fun days in Philadelphia as the Athletics have brought great excitement and joy to their followers and defining winning baseball. Dick McBride has put aside his time as a player and has this team motivated and confident as they have run off an amazing 14 straight wins.

Top pick Jack Fournier is hitting .371 while Jeff Conine leads the team with 20 RBI. Pitcher Adonis Terry can now brag about more then just his good looks as he has won 15 games and has struck out 14 men. The A's have scored 158 runs which is tops in the league and the team doesnt seem to be slowing down. Philly has not lost since April 16th.

"We are just having fun and expecting to win" says McBride, "people said this new league would be full of pressure, but not the case for this group."

Matching the Athletics almost game for game is Brooklyn, the Atlantics are also 16-3 with 11 games to play but have only won 5 games in a row.

Wright Feels Pressure In Beantown
September 1, 1871

Everyone knows Harry Wright, but when the Boston manager walks the streets of town this season or is approached by a reporter, his pace quickens a bit. Wright is surely growing tired of questions and criticism of why the most celebrated name is baseball has seen his team struggle. The Red Stockings are 6-18 and have played the type of baseball that a city like Boston wouldnt represent.

The Reds are 3-12 in front of their own fans and have not pitched the baseball well allowing 277 runs. Ed Seward has been the target of much of the struggles and the 19 year old reportedly hasnt delat with it well. His 4.67 ERA and 16 losses are hard to overlook. Boston has scored runs and Joe Tinker remains a fan favorite at the top of the order with 20 RBI, but there is little to really get excited about.

Rumors are circulating that Wright wont be back to manage for the next season and some say that his reputation as a baseball mind may have passed him by or be overflated. The Boston faithful want results better then these.

In other news, the Atlantics and the Athletics continue their collision course to face one another in the first World Series.

Regular Season Finale
October 8, 1871

With a sigh of relief the first professional season of the league of clubs ended just as the autumn breeze was rolling in. In the end much was learned about the game and its best players as well as expectations. What was learned is that this game can not be forecasted with any real certainty.

In the end teams faltered, battled, spit and bled but two clubs overwhelmingly came to the top and now will face off for the championship. In the National League the pennant went to the Brooklyn Atlantics who, powered by 23 wins by Rick Rueschel, lost only 5 times The Atlantics well outplayed the better known names of Cincinnati and Boston to run away with the race.

In the American League we saw much of the same dominance as the Philadelphia Athletics won 22 games and held off the St. Louis Browns. Jack Fournier and Jeff Conine were quite the duo and both should get MVP consideration as the season ends.

Now comes the first of its kind, a World Series. In the cool fall air both these teams will play a best of seven series and the excitement has built as there is no doubt that these two clubs are the best in the nation.

Twenty two year old star Gene Paulette will come to be known as the first batting champion. Paulette had 47 hits and ended up hitting .392. Paulette beat out his teamate Freddy Sanchez for the honors as the Atlantics hit .353 as a team. The league will recognize Paulette for his acheivement and he will also recieve a nice custom made hand watch for his success.

"He better never be late" joked manager Dick McBride.

Paulette - .392

1st World Series

Brooklyn Atlantics vs Philadelphia Athletics

Game 1
In Brooklyn

5-for-5 Day for Sanchez
Brooklyn Atlantics second baseman Freddy Sanchez went ballistic today with the bat. He hammered the Philadelphia Athletics for 5 hits and drove Brooklyn to a 14-13 win over Philadelphia at Capitoline Grounds.

Freddy Sanchez hit a two-run single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

Sanchez is presently hitting at a .389 pace with 1 home run and 34 RBIs. He has played in 30 games and scored 47 times.

Game 2
In Brooklyn

The Atlantics score nine runs in the 6th inning and hammer 20 hits as they take a commanding lead in the series after a 17-4 win. Stan Lopata hit the first ever World Series home run in this game and the catcher drove in three runs while quickly making a name for himself.

Adonis Terry allowed 12 runs and the Philadelphia A's are being overwhelmed but have also done themselves in committing 14 errors in the two games played.

Game 3
In Philadelphia

The home Athletics had a two run lead heading into the late innings and seemed on their way to getting back into this series. The Atlantics however put together quite a rally with Stan Lopata again driving in three runs as Brooklyn scored five runs in the final two innings. It was a collapse the home team will remember for a while and shows just how a championship game is never over until the final out.

The Athletics look to win at least a single game and salvage some much needed pride after the first three. Partys and parades are already being scheduled in Brooklyn as Rick Rueschel takes the mound for game four.

Game 4
In Philadelphia

Philadelphia shows its pride and was fired up to avoid the sweep and beat the Atlanticd 11-7. Philly scored five runs in the bottom of the second to open up the game with Jack Fournier driving in two.

Brooklyn committed 12 errors and didnt seem like they wanted to wrap up the series. Now another game at Jefferson Street Grounds and the A's try to keep a pulse.

Game 5
In Philadelphia

Brooklyn Wins it All
For the Brooklyn Atlantics, it was all about winning, and win they did.

There was nothing fancy in how they went about it either, the team just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball the right way.

"We did the little things right, we did the big things right," said catcher Stan Lopata. "Now we're the league champions."

Brooklyn defeated the Philadelphia Athletics by a score of 15-0 at Jefferson Street Grounds to take the series 4-1.

"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said the Brooklyn manager. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."

Series MVP

Stan Lopata
.476, 2 HR, 14 RBI
