The Northern American BaseBall League

I decided to restart again in 1871 with the start of Baseball here in North America. I started my original dynasty way back in March of 2011 with the North American BaseBall League, the NABL. Well it seems another forumite has the same idea as a premise. This time around I will be playing as a regular GM, so I will get fired and such. I will be tracking some stats like GRAND SLAMS, Batting Titles, ERA Crowns and such. If you want to see something tracked please chime in. So I will be starting in 1871 and I will take to helm of one of the first teams. After a few tests I will be toning down the very infrequent injuries. One I found lead to an early problem with a player being credited with 42 games in the 30 game season. . I am still deciding on how to handle various real life stoppages live war and strike, but those will not happen until much later. I will start my career with the Boston Red Stockings.

Boston has the first pick in the inaugural draft. I am deciding on who to pick first. Will Ross Barnes, Cal McVey, Cap Anson, Al Spalding, or Levi Meyerle be picked first. So many choices so little time.

The first picks goes to Cap Anson.

Opening day in Boston as we host the Chicago White Stockings at South End Grounds. Chicago will play Bobby Mathews from Baltimore.

White Stockings Win Slugfest, 14-11
Fans brought energy and enthusiasm to the Boston Red Stockings home opener. Al Pratt started for the home team against Bobby Mathews for the Chicago White Stockings. The Red Stockings were unable to reward the home crowd with a win. The final score was 14-11, Chicago. Ralph Ham was named player of the game. Bobby Mathews was the winning pitcher. Over 9 innings, he allowed 11 runs on 10 hits, with no walks and no strikeouts.

John Radcliff didn't waste any time giving his team the lead. His first time up in the top of the first, he cranked a 2-run home run to put Chicago on top, 2-0.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Ham. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."

Game 2 did not get any better.

White Stockings Throttle Red Stockings, 4-1 The umbrellas came out during the Chicago-Boston contest at South End Grounds I.

The Chicago White Stockings picked up a win at South End Grounds I, knocking off the Boston Red Stockings, 4-1. Starting pitcher Bobby Mathews played a key role in the triumph. Chicago, at 2-0, has sizzled in the early going.

Ezra Sutton was a key contributor to the win for the White Stockings. In the top of the eighth with no one out, the light-hitting third baseman stroked a double to left. He went 3-5 with 2 doubles.

"We take it day by day here," said Sutton, "and today was a good one for us."

We get swept at home.

White Stockings Roll to 11-4 Win Over Red Stockings.
Benefiting from the performance of Charlie Mills, the Chicago White Stockings defeated the Boston Red Stockings, 11-4. Mills went 3 for 5 with a triple and a double. He scored 4 times and drove in 2 for the White Stockings. Bobby Mathews got the win, improving to 3-0. He held the Red Stockings to 4 runs on 6 hits over 9 innings, while striking out 0 and walking 1. The White Stockings, now 3-0, have been playing some good baseball.

Mills had an important at-bat with the bases loaded in the top of the first, when he hit a 2-run single. The White Stockings went on to win.

"We came out aggressive," said Chicago White Stockings manager Jimmy Wood. "We came out swinging the bats."

We host two games with the Brooklyn Atlantics to close out April. Hoping to avoid a month long sweep, I hold a team meeting. Well the meeting did work as we beat Brooklyn on the 23rd by a score of 10-2 and also won 7-1 on the 30th

April 23rd 1871
Pratt Throws 2-Hitter En Route to 10-2 Red Stockings Win
Boston Red Stockings starter Al Pratt kept the Brooklyn Atlantics hitters in check, leading his team to a comfortable 10-2 win. The Red Stockings have stumbled out of the gate, getting only their 1st win in 4 games.
Pratt was effective for Boston, seldom allowing the Atlantics to square up a pitch. The right-hander tossed 120 pitches over 9 innings. He limited Brooklyn to just 2 runs on 2 hits.

Brooklyn manager Jacob Cole called the blowout loss "ugly.

April 30th 1871
Red Stockings Stymie Brooklyn, Take 7-1 Win Boston and Brooklyn put this game in the books despite some rain.

Boston Red Stockings starter Al Pratt was in fine form against the Brooklyn Atlantics at South End Grounds I, leading his team to a 7-1 win. Pratt went the distance for Boston. He gave up 1 run on 11 hits.
John W Glenn had a big run-scoring single for the Red Stockings in the bottom of the third inning. With Boston leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a fastball from Asa Brainard and stroked the single to right. It was his 2nd hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Red Stockings ahead, 2-0.

"I just tried to attack the bottom of the zone," said Pratt.

Boston is still hoping to get on a roll. The win is just their 2nd in 5 games.

We close out our 3 game series hosting Brooklyn with a loss 5-3.

May 8th 1871
Red Stockings Lose to Atlantics, 5-3
Brooklyn Atlantics starter Asa Brainard was definitely locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Boston Red Stockings, 5-3. With the win, Brooklyn is 3-3.

Brooklyn took the lead in the top of the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded, Charlie Hodes stroked a 2-run single to make it 4-2, Atlantics.

"I never try to think too much," said Hodes.

We then travel to Cincinnati for a 3 game series. They are 3-3. It will be the battle of the Two Als. Pratt and Spalding. We took the first two games before falling in the third game to some late 9th inning heroics.

May 12th 1871

Red Stockings Solve Reds, 5-3
The Boston Red Stockings picked up a win at Avenue Grounds, knocking off the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3. On the mound for Boston was right-hander Al Pratt, who played a pivotal role in the win. With the win, the Red Stockings improved to 3-4.

Charlie Gould didn't waste any time giving his team the lead. His first time up in the top of the first, he cranked a 2-run single to put Boston on top, 2-0.

"Throwing strikes was the main thing," Pratt said.

May 21st 1871

Red Stockings Stick Reds with 6-4 Loss
The Boston Red Stockings topped the Cincinnati Reds, 6-4, in National League action at Avenue Grounds. The player of the game was Boston pitcher and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native Al Pratt. The winning pitcher was Pratt, now 4-4. He tossed 9 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 2. The Red Stockings move to 4-4 with the win, while the Reds drop to 3-5.

Early in the game, center fielder Pete Donnelly had a run-scoring triple for Boston. It was his 1st triple of the season and put the Red Stockings on top, 1-0.

"You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Donnelly told the Boston Observer.

May 27th 1871

Reds Topple Red Stockings with Late Rally
The Boston Red Stockings were defeated, 12-11, by the Cincinnati Reds. Leading the charge for Cincinnati was first baseman Bub McAtee. He went 3 for 6 with 3 singles. He scored 4 runs. Cincinnati reliever Bill Stearns picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Al Pratt shouldered the loss. Cincinnati is last in the National League with a record of 4-5.

The clutch at-bat in the bottom of the ninth belonged to McAtee. Facing Al Pratt with runners on 1st and 3rd, the Cincinnati first baseman had a run-scoring single. Game over, walk-off style!

"We had the game right there for the taking," said Boston manager Scott Smith. "But we decided not to take it."

Our next stop will be in Chicago for a rematch With the White Stockings. The first game did not get any better than the last time we first met. Losing 19-14.

May 30th 1871

Barnes Helps Chicago Outscore Boston
The Chicago White Stockings topped the Boston Red Stockings, 19-14, with second baseman Ross Barnes playing a big role. Barnes was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 4 runs and drove in 2 for the White Stockings in the win. Chicago has an impressive 7-3 record.

In the first inning, Barnes had a run-scoring double for Chicago. It was his 5th double of the season and put the White Stockings on top, 2-1.

"It was offense that won us the game," said winning manager Jimmy Wood.

May comes to a close with George Zettlein sitting up top with a 8-1 record for Cleveland.
Chicago White Stocking Ross Barnes leads the NL batters with his .490 BA, while Levi Meyerle leads the AL with his sizzling .510 BA

As we enter into June, we finish our series with Chicago and hope not to be swept again. And the result was some bad weather and a rescheduling for June 13th 1871 as a doubleheader. Should be fun.

June 13 1871
Game 1

Red Stockings Hammer White Stockings, 16-3
The Boston Red Stockings topped the Chicago White Stockings, 16-3, with youngster Charlie Gould playing a key role. Gould was 2-6 with a triple and a double, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4 for the Red Stockings in the win. Al Pratt picked up the win with 9 innings of work. He allowed 3 earned runs on 8 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 0. On the season, he is now 5-6. The Red Stockings own a robust 5-6 mark.

Gould in the top of the ninth had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and the Red Stockings leading 12-1, he hit a bases-clearing double.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Gould.

Game 2

Mathews Throws 5-Hitter En Route to 3-1 White Stockings Win
Getting an impressive start from Bobby Mathews, Chicago beat Boston by the score of 3-1. The first-place White Stockings have a one-game lead in their division.

Mathews, now 8-4, scattered 5 hits over 9 innings for the White Stockings.

"I really like what we did out there today," Mathews said after the game.

After we avoided a sweep from Chicago, The Red Stockings look to stay out of last place when we travel to Brooklyn.

June 15th 1871

Red Stockings Come Back Late to Top Atlantics
John W Glenn made an impact in the 8-6 Boston win over Brooklyn. Glenn, who is rated as the 49th best prospect by BNN, went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. The Atlantics, at 4-9, have lost 4 in a row.

The United States-born Deacon White came through in the clutch. In the top of the eighth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Red Stockings trailing 5-4, he hit a 2-run triple to center to put Boston on top.

"It's nice to come out on top today," said White.

June 25th 1871

Red Stockings Stumble, Lose to Atlantics
The Brooklyn Atlantics bested the Boston Red Stockings, 11-5, at Capitoline Grounds. Lip Pike was named player of the game. He was 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs. Asa Brainard was the winner. Over 9 innings, he allowed 5 runs on 10 hits, with no walks and 1 strikeout. The last-place Atlantics are now 5-9, the Red Stockings 6-8.

The two teams provided some entertaining baseball for the Capitoline Grounds crowd. Regardless of the outcome, a good time was had by all.

"I like winning," Pike told the Brooklyn Herald. "I may joke around, but when it comes down to it, winning is the most important thing."

June 30th 1871

Atlantics Prevail, 8-7, Over Boston
Brooklyn shortstop George Wright was instrumental in his team's 8-7 win over the Boston Red Stockings. Wright, who leads the NL in home runs with 1, went 3-4 with 1 run scored to lead the offensive attack for the Atlantics. Asa Brainard, who went 9 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 7 runs on 12 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 1. His record now stands at 6-9. Brooklyn is now 6-9.

Brooklyn took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and a runner on 3rd, Asa Brainard stroked a run-scoring single to make it 8-7, Atlantics.

"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Brooklyn Atlantics manager Jacob Cole. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."

The first All Star game will be played on July 4th 1871. See who is the best.

McBride Dominates in 10-0 Win over National League All-Stars
Dick McBride said the annual all-star game is mostly for the fans to enjoy, but the players have a lot of fun, too.

"As a competitor, you love being out there trying to get those guys out," he said. "There's no soft spots in the lineup. It's a big challenge, but a lot of fun."

McBride was definitely up for the challenge, as he was named the game MVP. His American League All-Stars won 10-0 over the National League All-Stars.

McBride pitched 6 innings, striking out 1, and allowed no earned runs.

Boston comes home to play Cincinnati. When we first met in May we took 2 out of 3. Cap Anson will see his 16 game hitting streak halted as we again took 2 out of three.

July 11th 1871

Beals Delivers Clutch At-Bat for Boston in Walk-Off Win
The Boston Red Stockings defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 8-7, in National League action at South End Grounds, with Boston pitcher Al Pratt named player of the game. Pratt, now 7-9, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 10 hits, while striking out 0, walking 0, and allowing 1 earned run. The Red Stockings sit in third place in the National League with a record of 7-9.

When he came to bat in the bottom of the ninth, Tommy Beals had a chance to end it. Cincinnati pitcher Al Spalding had other ideas. But with two outs, Beals reached on an error by the 3B, driving in 1 run. The Red Stockings had the walk-off win.

"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Cincinnati manager Carlos Mendoza. "The effort was great."

July 13th 1871

Red Stockings Nip Reds, 5-4
The Boston Red Stockings picked up a win at South End Grounds, knocking off the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4. Starting pitcher Al Pratt played a key role in the triumph. The Red Stockings, at 8-9, sit in second place in the National League.

In the bottom of the first, Tommy Beals hit a bases-clearing triple for Boston. The 3rd triple of the season for the Boston shortstop put the Red Stockings on top, 3-0.

"Both teams played hard," said Boston manager Scott Smith.

July 25th 1871

Reds Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Red Stockings
Cincinnati rode a decent outing from starter Al Spalding to victory over the Boston Red Stockings at South End Grounds I. The final score was 6-4. Cincinnati bumps their record to 9-9 with the win.

Dave Birdsall drove in one run for Cincinnati. In the top of the eighth, with the teams deadlocked, 2-2, Birdsall delivered for the Reds. His run-scoring sacrifice fly put Cincinnati on top, 3-2.

"We did enough to win," said Spalding.

Back home we are to meet first place team Chicago, they 5-1 against us. A split to close out July as Al Pratt is named Pitcher of the Month

July 25th 1871

More bad weather and will be rescheduled for July 30th as a twin bill

July 30th 1871

Game 1
White Stockings Win at Boston, 10-6
Chicago overcame a superlative game from Deacon White to beat Boston, 10-6. The Boston catcher took player of the game honors in a losing cause. He was 3-5 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. At 12-7, the White Stockings have a slim two-game lead in the National League.

Making an impact for Chicago was left fielder Ralph Ham. He drilled a triple in the top of the first. For the game, Ham went 2 for 6 with 2 triples, while scoring 2 times.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Ham said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

Game 2

Red Stockings Need Extra Frames to Get Past White Stockings
Behind a solid performance from left fielder Tom York, the Boston Red Stockings defeated the Chicago White Stockings, 8-7. York was 3 for 5 with a triple, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2 for the Red Stockings. The Red Stockings now have a record of 9-11 with the win over Chicago.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 11th. That's when Boston first baseman Charlie Gould, facing Bobby Mathews, had a run-scoring single. It gave the Red Stockings the 8-7 win.

"I was able to barrel up some pitches," said York.

As we get into the middle of August, we finish up our three games series with the Chicago White Stockings. A 14-3 drubbing of them.

Boston rode a decent outing from starter Al Pratt to victory over the Chicago White Stockings at South End Grounds. The final score was 14-3. In 9 innings, Pratt surrendered 8 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 0. He allowed 3 runs. The third-place Red Stockings now have a win-loss record of 10-11.

The Red Stockings picked up the win with a combination of good hitting and good pitching.

"We came out aggressive," said Boston Red Stockings manager Scott Smith. "We came out swinging the bats."

Brooklyn is our next opponent as we try to once again stay out of the cellar. We are 3-3 against them.

The Boston Red Stockings downed the Brooklyn Atlantics, 18-9, at South End Grounds. The Red Stockings were led by Marshall King, who captured player of the game honors. He was 4-5 with a triple and 2 doubles. He scored 4 runs and drove in 4. Boston has now won 3 in a row.

Early in the game, King had a bases-clearing triple for Boston. It was his 2nd triple of the season and put the Red Stockings on top, 5-2.

Brooklyn starter Asa Brainard pitched effectively against the Boston Red Stockings at South End Grounds. The right-hander led his team to a 10-3 win. At 10-13, the Atlantics find themselves in last place in the National League.

George Wright was a key contributor to the win for the Atlantics. In the top of the first with no one out, the light-hitting shortstop stroked a triple to center. He was 1 for 5 with a triple.

"If I go out there and help the team win, that's all you can do," said Brainard.

Hodes Helps Brooklyn Outscore Boston
The Brooklyn Atlantics relied on the hitting of catcher Charlie Hodes to stop the Boston Red Stockings, 19-10. For the game, Hodes was 4 for 6 with a home run and 3 singles, while scoring 4 times and driving in 3. Brooklyn occupies last place in the National League at 11-13.

George Wright had a big 2-run single for the Atlantics in the top of the second inning. With Brooklyn leading 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a slider from Al Pratt and stroked the single to center. It was his 33rd hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Atlantics ahead, 3-0.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Wright told the Brooklyn Herald. "It's as simple as that."

September will see our travels back to Cincinnati for a three game series that will make it do or die as we are 3 games back the Reds.

September 3rd 1871

Red Stockings Edge Past Cincinnati, 7-6
Cincinnati got a terrific performance from pitcher Al Spalding, but it wasn't enough to beat the Boston Red Stockings. Boston won the Avenue Grounds contest, 7-6. Spalding was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 9 innings allowing 7 runs. Boston, at 12-13, occupies third place in the National League.

The most important at-bat for Boston came in the top of the ninth inning. With two out, Charlie Gould reached on an error by the center fielder, driving in 1 run, putting Boston up, 7-6.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Gould, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."

September 8th 1871

Red Stockings Pull Back to .500 With Win Over Reds
Boston Red Stockings starter Al Pratt was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Cincinnati Reds, 7-3. The Red Stockings' win now puts them at 13-13.

One consequential at-bat came in the top of the second. With runners on 1st and 2nd, the batter, Marshall King, hit a run-scoring single. It made the score 1-0, Boston, and helped them go on to win.

"It all depends on which version of our team shows up," said Pratt. "When we put it all together, I think we're a great team."

September 14th 1871

Victory Pushes Red Stockings Record to 14-13
The Boston Red Stockings bested the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 11-6, with left fielder Tom York getting the main credit. On the day, York went 3-5 with 2 triples. He scored 2 times and drove in 4 for the Red Stockings. Boston has a 3-game win streak, while Cincinnati has lost 3 in a row.

In the top of the fourth inning, first baseman Charlie Gould came through big-time for the Red Stockings. With Boston leading 3-2, he belted a solo home run.

"Baseball is about momentum," said York, "and we feel we've got it in our favor after that win."

Fresh off our sweep of Cincinnati we take on Chicago again. Ross Barnes sits as the only player with a batting average over .400 at .411 BA. The White Stockings are 6-3 against Boston.

September 21st 1871

Red Stockings Bang Out 10-7 Win Versus Chicago
Benefiting from Charlie Gould's productive game, the Boston Red Stockings downed the Chicago White Stockings, 10-7. Gould was 3-5 with 2 doubles. He scored 2 times and drove in 4 for the Red Stockings. Al Pratt was the winning pitcher. Over 9 innings, he allowed 7 runs on 12 hits, with 2 walks and no strikeouts. Boston has run its win streak to 4 in a row.

Gould had an important at-bat with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, when he hit a 2-run double. The Red Stockings went on to win.

Gould called the triumph "a good team win."

September 27th 1871

5 Straight Wins for Red Stockings
Charlie Gould made an impact in the 13-8 Boston win over Chicago. Gould, who is tied for 4th in the NL in RBI with 26, was 3 for 4 with 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. The current losing streak for Chicago has reached 4 games.

One important at-bat came with a runner on 1st in the top of the first. That's when John W Glenn, who is tied for 5th in the NL in home runs with 1, hit a single. The Red Stockings went on to win.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling pretty confident after that win," said Gould.

October 5th 1871

Win Streak Now at 6 for Red Stockings
The Chicago White Stockings got a superb performance from third baseman Ezra Sutton, but the Boston Red Stockings still won the game, 11-8. Sutton was named the player of the game despite the loss. He was 3 for 4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Chicago has now lost 5 straight.

A defensive miscue in the top of the seventh cost the White Stockings. With Boston leading 6-5, Deacon White reached on an error by the left fielder. Boston ended up winning the ballgame.

"I like the roll we're on right now," said White after the game.

Home opener against Brooklyn in a four game series. Our number one prospect is starting in Center Field, Jack Remsen. In real life he lasted just 10 season with a .244 career BA. We will see what he can do for Boston.

April 3rd
Red Stockings Lose to Atlantics, 10-3
South End Grounds was the site of the home opener for the Boston Red Stockings. The contest featured a prime matchup between Asa Brainard of the visiting Brooklyn Atlantics and Al Pratt of the Red Stockings. The final score was 10-3, the Atlantics getting the win. Earning player of the game honors was Asa Brainard. Brainard went the distance for Brooklyn. He gave up 3 runs on 8 hits.

Brainard contributed a productive at-bat in the top of the second. With a runner on 2nd, he hit a run-scoring double. It was one at-bat among others that helped Brooklyn get the win.

"I'll be honest," said Brainard. "I didn't have much left in the tank."

George Hall upped his hitting streak to 20 games.

April 7th
Big Day with Bat: White 5-for-6
Some moments become linked with a particular player's career forever. Deacon White of the Boston Red Stockings had one of those moments when he went 5-for-6 at the plate today in the 10-9 win over the Brooklyn Atlantics at South End Grounds I.

"I won't forget this anytime soon, and I don't expect it to happen too often," the 24-year-old catcher told reporters in the postgame interview. "I'll be happy to just get a hit or two every day. Enough to hang around the league a while longer. Like 10, maybe 15 more years."

Deacon White singled in the 2nd, grounded out in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

April 11th
Late Rally by Atlantics Secures Win
Brooklyn third baseman Bill Boyd was instrumental in his team's 12-9 win over the Boston Red Stockings. Boyd, who is rated as the 8th best prospect by BNN, went 3-5 with 3 runs scored to lead the offensive attack for the Atlantics. Brooklyn, now 2-1, has played well in the early going.

Boyd had a game-changing single in the top of the ninth. On a 1-2 slider from Al Pratt, he banged a run-scoring single to center, giving the Atlantics a 9-8 lead. It was the 6th hit of the year for Boyd.

"I was able to barrel up some pitches," said Boyd.

April 15th
Red Stockings Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Atlantics
The Boston Red Stockings picked up a win at South End Grounds, knocking off the Brooklyn Atlantics, 8-4. Starting pitcher Al Pratt played a key role in the triumph. The loss lowers the Brooklyn record to 2-2.

Boston took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. With no one out, pinch hitter Oscar Bielaski hit a 3-run home run that set the crowd abuzz.

"It's nice to come out on top today," said Bielaski.

Cincinnati comes to town for a three game series. Maybe get revenge from late last year?

April 17th
Red Stockings Jolt Reds with Late Rally
Boston Red Stockings starter Al Pratt was in fine form against the Cincinnati Reds at South End Grounds I, leading his team to a 5-3 win. Boston, now 3-2, has gotten their season off to a good start.

Had Oscar Bielaski not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 3rd, Bielaski hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Red Stockings.

"If I go out there and help the team win, that's all you can do," said Pratt.

April 21st
5-Hit Blitz by Cincinnati's Force
The Reds tripped up the Red Stockings 11-10 today, led by Davy Force, their 22-year-old third baseman. He tagged Boston pitching for 5 hits, making life miserable for them the entire game. Davy Force singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, singled in the 7th and walked in the 9th.

So far this season Force is batting .500 with no home runs.

April 24th
York Helps Boston Outscore Cincinnati
The Boston Red Stockings relied on the hitting of left fielder Tom York to stop the Cincinnati Reds, 16-14. For the game, York went 4 for 5 with 4 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. Boston starter Al Pratt was credited with the win after throwing 187 pitches over 9 innings. His record now stands at 4-3. The Red Stockings raised their record to 4-3.

The Red Stockings benefited from a costly error in the bottom of the third. With Jack Remsen at bat and Boston trailing 6-3, the Cincinnati miscue allowed Boston to plate 2 and take the lead, 6-5.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," York told the Boston Chronicle.

We are off to the Windy City for a 4 game series over the next two weeks.

April 30th
Red Stockings Come Back Late to Top White Stockings
Boston starter Al Pratt pitched effectively against the Chicago White Stockings at 23rd Street Grounds. The right-hander led his team to a 7-5 win. Pratt got the win, improving to 5-3. He allowed 12 hits and walked 2 over 9 innings. Pratt allowed 3 earned runs. The loss drops Chicago to 3-5.

Charlie Gould's hit in the top of the ninth was a game-changer. With two out, he rapped a curveball from Bobby Mathews for a 2-run single. It put Boston in front, 7-5.

"If we play well, we'll win our share of games," said Pratt. "The only team that can beat us is us."

May 2nd
White Stockings Score Late, Top Red Stockings, 6-5
Charlie Gould had a good game, but he could not keep the Boston Red Stockings from falling, 6-5, to the Chicago White Stockings at 23rd Street Grounds. The Boston first baseman went 2-3 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once in the loss. Bobby Mathews got credit for the win, improving to 4-4. He allowed 5 runs on 14 hits in 9 innings. The win takes Chicago to 4-5.

Everett Mills was the walk-off hero for Chicago. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, the Chicago first baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"We fed off the energy of the crowd at the end," Mills said.

May 8th
Red Stockings Trip White Stockings in Extras
Boston starter Al Pratt pitched effectively against the Chicago White Stockings at 23rd Street Grounds. The right-hander led his team to a 7-5 win. Pratt went 10 innings to notch the win. He scattered 12 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. His record improves to 6-4. The White Stockings fall to 4-6 and continue their wobbly start to the 1872 season.

Tom York had the most critical at-bat for Boston. With two in the top of the tenth inning, York hit a 1-0 fastball from Bobby Mathews for a run-scoring single. It put Boston in front, 6-5.

"I felt good even in the late innings," said Pratt after the game.

May 12th
White Stockings Stun Red Stockings, 5-2
The Chicago White Stockings got a stellar effort from pitcher Bobby Mathews, helping Chicago score a 5-2 win over the visiting Boston Red Stockings. Mathews went the distance for Chicago. He gave up 2 runs on 5 hits. Chicago, at 5-6, sits in third place in the National League.

Ross Barnes was a key contributor to the win for the White Stockings. In the bottom of the eighth with no one out, the light-hitting second baseman stroked a single to right. He went 3 for 4 with 3 singles.

"I really like what we did out there today," Mathews said after the game.

We go back to Brooklyn for a 3 game series. The Atlantics are tied with us at series 2-2, dating back to the beginnings of this season.

May 14th
Great Stroke: White Gets 6 Hits
Boston Red Stockings catcher Deacon White really lit up the Brooklyn Atlantics with a 6-hit barrage today at Capitoline Grounds -- a performance that sparked the Red Stockings to a 16-14 triumph.

He shrugged off the performance after the game, saying "sometimes the ball finds outfielders, today the ball found some holes."

Deacon White hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a two-run triple in the 7th, flied out in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off Asa Brainard in the 10th.

This season White is swinging the bat at a .386 rate with 22 hits in 57 at-bats. To date he has hit 1 home run, scored 16 runs and driven in 14.

May 19th
Victory Over Atlantics Takes Boston to 8-5 The Boston Red Stockings had to overcome a big game from Brooklyn shortstop George Wright to leave Capitoline Grounds with a 20-18 victory. Wright was 4-5 with 4 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Al Pratt was the winning pitcher. Over 9 innings, he allowed 18 runs on 17 hits, with 1 walk and no strikeouts. The Red Stockings, at 8-5, lead by one game in their division.

Deacon White's at-bat in the top of the second was significant for the Red Stockings. Coming to the plate with the bases loaded and Boston leading 3-2, the catcher hit a 2-run single.

"Enjoyed this one," White told the Boston Chronicle. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

May 23rd
