Houston Astros - New for You in '72!

This is the first time I attempt an OOTP Dynasty Report, so any feedback (bad, good or indifferent) is greatly appreciated!

It is January 1972 and Roy “The Judge” Hofheinz, the owner of the Houston Astros, who has been confined to a wheelchair and partly paralyzed from a stroke in May 1970, is still left wondering how his Astros could finish 79-83 for a second consecutive year.

As most of you know, Hofheinz was heavily criticized for his plan to build a gigantic sports stadium under a roof back in the 1950’s, but the Houston Sports Association received a major-league franchise on the promise of building a new stadium, and in 1965 the world's first domed stadium was completed. Hofheinz claimed the Astrodome was "the Eighth Wonder of the World." Though several Harris County bond issues had funded most of the $31.6 million for the stadium, the Houston Sports Association had a long-term lease on the building.

The Astrodome soon became the home of the Houston Colt .45s (renamed the Houston Astros) and the Houston Oilers. Building on the success of the Astrodome, Hofheinz developed the South Loop by adding Astroworld USA, Astrohall, and four "Astrodomain" hotels/motels (Holiday Inn, Sheraton, Howard Johnson's, and the nine-story Astroworld Hotel).

Hofheinz is now contemplating the future of the Houston Astros.

Hofheinz instructed his General Manager, Spec Richardson, to tradeoff all of his current high priced and old players and go into full Youth (or as the Houston Chronicle stated, “Cheap”) Mode.

Will Tommy Helms, Jimmy Stewart and Johnny Edwards be traded sooner than later?

I have to (be) honest,” said Hofheinz, “I am tired of people reminding me that we entered Major League Baseball the same time as the (New York) Mets and those same Mets won the World Series in 1969 while we (Houston Astros) only finished 81 and 81. Also, I am getting frustrated that since 1962 we (Houston Astros) have yet to finish above .500! So I am going to scrap my current plan and try something completely different. Let’s just say our motto this year isNew for You in ‘72!’”

Hofheinz also stated, “If fan turnout decreases with this new approach I will not worry, after all I can still make money with Astroworld (which will open the Country Fair in 1972 as the park's ninth themed area and the Dexter Frebish Electric Roller Ride, the first mine train coaster to utilize tall steel support columns.), my hotels, Astrodome concerts (with the inaugural Astrodome Jazz Festival), possibly bringing back Evel Knievel and have him jump 14 cars this time, and of course, increasing Bud Adams’ (owner of the Houston Oilers) rent.

February 28, 1972 – Roy “The Judge” Hofheinz, owner of the Houston Astros, has released a statement to the press.

It is obvious to me that Spec Richardson does not understand my vision and what New for You in ’72! is all about, let alone what consist of a Youth Movement.

Attachment 444090
The Judge is not happy!

While I applaud Spec moving Marty Martinez (age 29), Jack Billingham (age 28), Denis Menke (age 30), and Joe Morgan (age 27), why on God’s Green Earth would Spec trade away Ed Armbrister (age 23), Cesar Geronimo (age 23), John Mayberry (age 22), Bill Greif (age 22), Derrel Thomas (age 20), and Scipio Spinks (age 23) only to get in return Lee May (age 29), Tommy Helms (age 31), Jimmy Stewart (age 33), and Dave A. Roberts (age 27)?

Attachment 444086
Will Dave A. Roberts be an Astro on Opening Day?

I tell you, it just does not make sense to me! So with that in mind, I am announcing the hiring of Augustus–John “AJ” Allen (note this name is a combination of the two brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen who founded the city of Houston in 1836) as the new General Manager and demoting Spec to Assistant GM.

Attachment 444084
Founders of Houston, Texas - Brothers John K. Allen and Augustus C. Allen

After talking with AJ Allen, I am 100% confident he has the vision as to what not only consist of a Youth Movement, but what also needs to be accomplished.

Where will Lee May go?

Will be using Historical Minors – Let’s just say I am letting Spec be in charge of the Drafts and Minor League Teams, for at least 1972 anyway

Trade Difficulty – Very Hard

Trade Preference – Neutral

March 01, 1972 As Spring Training starts everyone in Houston is wondering who will stay and who will be traded away.

Attachment 444100
Will Bob Watson and Cesar Cedeno be traded?

Attachment 444101
The Toy Cannon has something on his mind

Attachment 444102
The Red Rooster has publicly said that,
“This whole Youth Movement is a joke!”

Harry Walker of the Houston Astros, whose job was in jeopardy the last half of the season was rehired for the 1972 season but one has to wonder if Walker will make it through the whole 1972 season.

Attachment 444103
Harry Walker, Roy Hofheinz and Assistant General Manager Speck Richardson.

Everyone on the team seems preoccupied with the talk of the Youth Movement. One wonders if Doug Rader will be the first to go with his recent comments to the press. AJ Allen has made it known to all teams that anyone and everyone is available, and has said publicly, "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You." Stay tuned to find out.

March 02, 1972 - Well, in a move that surprised absolutely no one, The Red Rooster has flown the coop. It was announced today that Doug Rader has been traded to the Detroit Tigers. When looking at the deal it is obvious that General Manager AJ Allen was just dumping Doug for as many young (all are 17-years old) players as he could get for the Third Baseman just to prove a point about his Youth Movement. Who is next to be traded? Stay tuned.

March 11, 1972 – In what is being called the “Anderson Trade,” Dave A. Roberts, who was just acquired in a Speck Richardson trade on December 3rd, has once again been traded to the New York Yankees for three players named Anderson and a pitcher. Yankees new owner George Steinbrenner, who in 1971 tried and failed to buy the Cleveland Indians, said that, “(AJ) Allen’s Youth Movement seems a bit far fetched and I wish him luck, but truth be told, I got the better of the deal.

In other news, it became final as No-Neck Williams arrived at Oakland Athletics’ Spring Training facility today.

Houston Astros GM AJ Allen had his own version of March Madness this week as AJ has shifted his Youth Movement into overdrive in a slew of trades this week. Houston fans and writers’ heads are still spinning from the list of trades.

March 25, 1972 – Cleveland Indians looking for Starting pitching have made a trade with the Houston Astros. Some experts believe that the Astros gave up way too much to move Ken Forsch.

March 26, 1972 – With Atlanta’s Reliever Cecil Upshaw out for Three (3) Months, Atlanta was willing to work out a deal and with Houston in the midst of a Youth Movement and cost cutting program both sides were willing to make a deal.

March 27, 1972 – Houston Astros have traded experience for St. Louis Cardinals’ inexperience is the only way that could explain today’s trade.

March 28, 1972 – In what could be only called a player dump between the Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins.

Owner Roy “The Judge” Hofheinz and General Manager AJ Allen would like for you to meet the New for You in '72! Houston Astros.

General Manager AJ Allen would like for everyone to note that Jimmy Wynn decided not to show up for picture day due to his injury.

Houston Astros' Bob "Bull" Watson is named National League's Player of the Week for April 10, 1972.

Rumor has it that when GM AJ Allen heard the news his immediate comment was, "Outstanding! That should drive Bull's trade value up."

Well the news just keeps getting better for our Houston Astros.

On April 10, 1972 our own Don Wilson pitches a No-Hitter!

After the game GM AJ Allen commented, "Wow! The Bull gets (NL) Player of the Week earlier today and Don pitches a No-Hitter tonight. I guess there is something to that 'New for You in '72!' slogan after all."

April 1972

The 1972 season started off wildly for the Houston Astros.

Bob Watson won Player of the Week and Don Wilson pitched a No-Hitter all on the same day. But after that, reality sent in.

Don Wilson will be out for 4 months due to Shoulder Inflammation.

Our record for April was 9 – 14.

Maybe it is time to start getting serious about the rebuild.

May 13, 1972 – The proverb "desperate times call for desperate measures," comes to mind in the latest trade by New York Mets GM Bob Scheffing. The Mets currently hold a two game lead on the St. Louis Cardinials and in frantic need for a Centerfielder might have given up a bit too much for Jim Wynn of the Houston Astros.

In other news today, Dan Blocker, 43, who played "Hoss" in Bonanza died today.

Blocker was born Bobby Dan Davis Blocker in De Kalb in Bowie County in northeastern Texas, son of Ora Shack Blocker (1895–1960) and his wife Mary Davis Blocker (1901–1998). The family moved to O'Donnell, south of Lubbock in West Texas, where they operated a store.

Blocker's big break also came in 1959, when he was cast as Eric "Hoss" Cartwright on the long-running NBC television series Bonanza, and played the role until his death. Blocker said he portrayed the Hoss character with a Stephen Grellet excerpt in mind: "We shall pass this way on Earth but once, if there is any kindness we can show, or good act we can do, let us do it now, for we will never pass this way again."
In 1968, Blocker starred with Frank Sinatra in the "Tony Rome" film sequel Lady In Cement.

Stanley Kubrick attempted to cast Blocker in his film Dr. Strangelove, after Peter Sellers elected not to add the role of Major T.J. "King" Kong to his multiple other roles, but according to the film's co-writer, Terry Southern, Blocker's agent rejected the script. The role subsequently went to Slim Pickens, who played the iconic scene of riding an atomic bomb down while waving his cowboy hat. In 1970, Blocker portrayed a love-shy galoot in Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico County, with Nanette Fabray as a love prospect and a supporting cast featuring Jim Backus, Jack Elam, Noah Beery, Jr., and Mickey Rooney. Blocker also appeared on NBC's The Flip Wilson Show comedy hour.

Director Robert Altman befriended Blocker while directing episodes of Bonanza. Years later, he cast Blocker as Roger Wade in The Long Goodbye, but Blocker died before filming began. The role went to Sterling Hayden, and the film was dedicated to Blocker.

Blocker started and received partial ownership in a successful chain of Ponderosa/Bonanza Steakhouse restaurants in exchange for serving (in character as Hoss) as their commercial spokesman and making personal appearances at franchises.

Well if it is not obvious to Astro Fans what consist of a Youth Movement, they found out a little bit more today with the trading away of Lee May and fan favorite Bob “Bull” Watson. As Astros fan Billy-Joe said at the Astrodome after hearing the trade was announced, “Yes-sir, makes sense to me, trade away (Lee) May who is hitting .347 and the Bull hitting .342 for potential and cash. Obviously this AJ guy has no idea what he is doing! I think we both know what ‘AJ’ stand for now.”

We also found out in Houston that there are fans calling the Astros’ office asking if they can get refunds on their season tickets. Season ticket holder, Jim-Bob got creative and ask if he could trade his Astros Season tickets for a Season Pass to Astroworld saying, “That way ‘The Judge’ can still get his money.”

In national news today, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), announced its plans as an American government agency to form advisory commissions for the purpose of regulating 13 different occupational hazards, including toxic chemicals, excessive noise, and radiation. Word is that the Major League Baseball Players Association have already asked OSHA to visit Jarry Park Stadium (Stade Parc Jarry), Candlestick Park, Arlington Stadium and Cleveland Municipal Stadium as soon as possible.

New York Mets fans are angry at GM Bob Scheffing when it was announced that Jimmy “The Toy Cannon” Wynn will be out for five weeks. Some fans are stating that Scheffing knew that Wynn could have been hurt before the trade. Since being traded to the Mets, Wynn was hitting at a .318 average with 2 Home Runs before he got hurt. Wynn’s bat will surely be missed over the next five weeks.

In national news today, Dr. Walter Jackson Freeman II, an American neurosurgeon who popularized the lobotomy has died at 76. Many New York Mets fans wonder if his last surgery was on GM Bob Scheffing.
